One of the major problems photographers face is not knowing what it takes to compose a great photo. Often, a photographer will spend long days capturing photos only to return with a set of images that he or she is not completely satisfied with. Sure, the lighting and exposure may have turned out great, but the overall composition of the photos leaves something to be desired. In short, they lack that “wow” factor that they see in other photographers’ shots.
Composition is the foundation in which great photography is built upon. A photo may be properly lit and contain good subject matter, but if it is doesn’t have good composition it will never be considered more than an amateur shot. How can you overcome this? We’ll teach you in this book.

Examples do not work as they are not taken by author
I have two problems with thus book, both of which stem from the same place. The author did not take these photos. To his credit Mr Jones is clear about this on the opening page.
The problem crops up with examples, if the author took the photos himself, then to show the benefit of composing a photo differently. Instead you see a completely different photo and are asked to believe what makes it compelling is just the change. For example, here is a guy swinging a golf club, as you can see the perspective is not interesting. This is a photo of an ice cream truck, with more processing, high saturation and an interesting angle taken on a different camera thousands of miles away. We are then told to imagine how good the golfer would look from a different angle.
The other piece I am struggling with is licensing, the book claims everything is under an attribution, non-commercial, share alike license. How can a book that I paid in the Amazon store to purchase be non-commercial? And while most photos are just requesting attribution, the ice cream truck in the example is listed as all rights reserved (on 2015-12-28) I do not know if it was more open in the past. Hopefully the author reached out to all and received their permission, and any needed releases.
This is a quick and well written explanation. The book can be slightly repetitive especially if you already know some composition basics. Even so it's a good little pocket guide for someone new and looking to vary things up.
This was a very helpful book, I could not put it down. This book got me thinking about my photography and has given me some ideas. This book has been very well written and does not bombard you with technical term that you spend ages looking up.
This book is clearly written and demonstrates the various rules with photo examples. A must read for every budding enthusiast who is mystified by composition.
I liked the book for two reasons. One, it knows its audience (beginner and intermediate photographers) and the explanations are brief without being technical or too theoretical. Second, the book isn't long and can be read in one sitting and is well suited as an introduction to the topic of composition and seems to touch on all the major subject points. You aren't going to become a master of the subject with this book alone but it still steer you in the right direction.
As an amateur photographer looking to improve I found this book useful. It is short and concise. Each of the chapters covers a separate technique they are short and not too technical.
