Wereldspionnen deel 4, vanaf 10 jaar.
James Ponti is the New York Times Bestselling author of three Middle Grade book series: the DEAD CITY trilogy about a secret society that polices the undead who live beneath New York City; the Edgar Award-winning FRAMED! series about a pair of Sherlockian tweens who solve mysteries in Washington, D.C.; and the all-new CITY SPIES about an unlikely squad of five kids from around the world who form an elite MI6 spy team.
James grew up in Atlantic Beach, Florida and lives in Orlando. He's a die hard fan of the Boston Red Sox, the USC Trojans, and the Italian National Soccer Team. He loves travel, writing, and spending time with his amazing family.
Thank you Simon Kids and Simon Audio for the opportunity to read, listen, and review!
Great read and audiobook! A family of spies! They traveled all over and they took up fake identities. They went undercover and hid in safe houses. They were careful everywhere they go. There's a surprise 6th member in this story. Great set of characters. Good humor. Adventurous. Teamwork. Smart/Clever characters. Young kids outsmart even the security of the museum.
The story followed 5 adopted brothers and sisters range in age from 12 to 15 years old. They're young spy agents working for the British Secret Intelligence. Each agent has his or her strengths to contribute to the team. Rio can read people and determine which security guard they can fool to obtain security clearance. Kat is the team leader in this book and she can see patterns. Sydney can handle explosives. Paris is the oldest brother. Brooklyn can hack computer networks.
This is the book I listened to twice. Once last year and once this year after I restart the series from the beginning. Great story for kids! Excited for book 5 which was published last week!
How could James leave us like this?? With that ending??
Kat is my favorite character, so I’m thrilled she has her own story. I love how she finds order in the chaos of Cairo. Really, I just love everything about this series. Excited for Rio’s story—one, because Rio is amazing and there will be lots of food, and two, because WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS. THAT. ENDING.
The fascinating, unexplored storyline in City Spies, Golden Gate, and Forbidden City that has most intrigued me was Mother's abandonment in a burning building by his wife and fellow spy, Clementine. He was rescued by the first City Spy, Paris, but Clementine has been on the run with their two children, and the suspicion is that she is working for Umbra, which is evil. We've heard snippets of the story, but are usually too caught up in the current mission to learn more. This time, Mother's past seems bound up with the current problem. The children are sent to "retrieve" items from the British Museum, which seems a bit odd. After some underground adventures and some explosives, they find out that there is more to this mission than they first believed. Kat, in particular, starts to see some patterns emerge in seemingly random outages of the subway system and other London locations. A coded scavenger hunt of sorts sends our intrepid young spies on a number of different sorties to find information, and they eventually end up in Egypt, in the Valley of the Kings! I find that I don't want to say too much about why they do there, or what they do, because everything unfolds in such a fun way, and I don't want to ruin anything. Strengths: Even though there is a rather large cast, I am able to keep the characters separated in my mind, which speaks to the quality of the character development. We learn a lot more about Kat and her abilities in this volume. The biggest draw for me is always the travel, and I recommend these to students who want vicarious adventures when stuck in study hall! Including information about the King Tut exhibit is fantastic, sixth our sixth graders study ancient Egypt, and makes this a great companion to Fleming's The Curse of the Mummy! The issue of countries having appropriated cultural artifacts in the past and thinking now about returning them is addressed in a thoughtful way. Of course, I was enthralled to find out more about Clementine and see a surprisingly character emerge and be added to the City Spies! This really made me think about Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax novels, which I adored! Weaknesses: Like many traveling spy books, there are some coincidences and helpful people that seem a bit unlikely. But then, we are dealing with tween spies who are traveling around the world, so an undercover taxi driver shouldn't really bother me! What I really think: While I'm a big fan of hugely long mystery series, five books is really about perfect for a middle grade series. In my last deep weeding dive, I pulled some series where book ten had been checked out once in ten years. Just before winter break, a student checked out a third book in a series that hadn't been circulated in the three years I've had it. Certainly, this must be replicated in sales, which is what motivates publishers. I love Ponti's work, but it's easier to circulate (and sell, I suspect) books that are stand alones or in shorter series. If I'm wearing my Reader Hat, I say publish 20 more of these, but if I have on my Librarian Hat, I'd like to see the series wrapped up.
The children of the City Spies are testing the security at the British Museum when a series of random cyberattacks occur in London. But for Kat, who can see patterns in everything, the attacks aren't random. That makes her the perfect leader for the mission. The clues take the team to Egypt and it will be their biggest challenge yet.
My favorite spies are back and their new mission involves egyptian artifacts - I have nothing to complain about! The icing on the cake is that Mother finally gets to see his son Robert again, even though there's still some question as to where Robert's loyalty lies. And Clementine's... I guess we will get some answers in the next installment: "Mission Manhattan"!
Another fun adventure with the city spies! Especially fun with the new addition to the team, who may or may not have his own agenda. I enjoyed exploring Egypt with the spies and learning more about the City of the Dead and antiquities. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Gaaaaah--I forgot there was a reason I paused after the third one! And that was because the fifth one won't be out for more than two weeks (yes, I have it preordered), and how on earth am I going to leave it here for that long???
What on earth is going on??? Watching the team in action was epic as always, everyone contributing from their own area of expertise and jumping in with a backup plan when something goes wrong. Also, watching Kat find her own unique ways to lead and grow and balance her own strengths with the strengths of the team was incredible! And something I don't think I've mentioned before--even though the situations sometimes skirt political issues and questions, I appreciate the way that one viewpoint isn't shoved in your face, and at least the possibility for nuance is acknowledged (in this case, the main question involves ownership of cultural artifacts). I liked the way that, even though some of the characters had strong feelings on the subject, I never felt like I was being pushed to see their viewpoint as the only correct way. Oh, and before I get into the spoilery part (and the reason I'm internally screaming), that one talk between Sydney and Paris--MY HEART!!! Told you Paris was my favorite...
If you’ve followed my reviews for any length of time, you may know just how much I love this middle grade series. My son and I have both read them all (though he hasn’t yet gotten his hands on this latest one!), and we’ve also read, both separately and out loud together, Mr. Ponti’s Dead City series, which we also love. (He has also read the Framed! series, though I have not.) Naturally I was going to jump at the chance to read and review book four! (You can find my reviews of book one here and book two here.)
While I suppose you technically could read this as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading the first three books first -- you’ll get a much better feel for the characters, and they’re totally all worth reading! In each book, a different one of our “city spies” (their codenames are each the cities in which they were found) is the alpha, or leader, of the mission. In book four, it’s Kat’s turn, and she leads in several missions throughout the book, which take the spies from London to Berlin to, ultimately, Cairo and Luxor, Egypt. Kat has always been a favorite character of mine -- she has Asperger’s and is able to see patterns amid all the chaos of life. She’s truly brilliant and refreshingly honest and plain-spoken! The spies continue hot on the heels of Umbra in this installment, and there’s a surprise addition to the City Spies team that no one was expecting. I literally read the entire book in one sitting; I just couldn’t stop flipping the pages!
I highly, highly recommend this series for all middle grade readers (will be especially good for reluctant readers!), as well as anyone who just enjoys a good spy thriller (one appropriate for kids, of course). This installment continues the unbroken string of five-star reviews for each book in the series. And with *that ending*, I can’t wait to read book five!
Rating: 5 stars!
**Disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour. This review is voluntary on my part and reflects my honest rating and review of the book.
Thank you to the publisher for an ARC of CITY OF THE DEAD.
City Spies is one of those series I frequently recommend when readers are looking for action and adventure stories. I often lose interest in a series by the fourth book, but CITY OF THE DEAD is partly set in Egypt with a mystery surrounding artifacts linked to the British Museum. I was so engrossed in this story and its fast-paced action that I hardly noticed the length (which, if you know me and my dislike for longer middle-grade books, says a lot about the series’ engaging writing.) There are so many details about the setting and technology that I felt like I escaped into the story, followed the team around, and was almost a spy myself! I spent a lot of time wondering about a new team member and where that storyline is going, so I look forward to reading the next installment.
I look forward to getting this book into the hands of young readers who are hooked on the series.
4.5 stars. I adore this Middle Grade series! Both the characters and the plots are hugely entertaining. And each book in the series is as good as the first.
These will continue to be must-reads for this terribly immature 54-year-old woman.
Honestly this series just keeps blending together for me, I can’t tell the books apart, so same thing I said for the second and first and third book. But it’s a good series, it’s quick and keeps you hooked the whole way thru.
The city spies are chasing hackers and rogue Egyptologists thru London, Berlin, and Cairo in this episode. Love the supporting characters that help the crew, especially the nuns and Marwen. Lots of travel and lots of heart, but watch out for that ending!
I love this books! I've been a fan since the first book came out and I have them all except the second one. It's an easy read for me now cause it's middle grade but I really like the books. It reminds me a little bit of Carmen San Diego and I like that part. I like all the characters, especially Paris. I also liked how this book was about Kat too, which was cool. I'm looking forward to the fifth book, which I'm assuming is about Rio. I wish it went a little deeper into their like back stories and the kid's pasts but it's still good. I hope the author like writes a sequel series to these books with the same characters but like young adult instead, that would be so good and age the characters by a couple years.
The City Spies have been sent to steal a necklace from the British Museum on Guy Fawkes Day, only to find out that they were doing so to test for weaknesses in light of intel MI6 received that someone was planning a heist of the Egyptian part of the museum. When the City Spies see the intel MI6 received, though, they realize the intel had a double meaning and Clementine was telling Mother he needed to go to Germany for something important. In the midst of planning this operation and trying to anticipate any of Clemmie's surprises, the City Spies are also investigating a series of cyber attacks in London that started the night of their museum heist. Someone calling themselves Horus is threatening to shut down major sectors of London. Their motive and who could be behind the attacks, are things the young spies must figure out. Their investigations will take them from their headquarters in Scotland to London, Berlin, and Egypt.
This was exactly as good as I've come to expect from James Ponti. Lots of fun spy action, tantalizing mysteries to solve, and lots of interpersonal and personal character development. Kat is alpha for several of the missions and the quiet math genius gets to shine in new ways in this book. Part of the plot involves adding a new person to the mix . The mystery also involves cyber security and Egyptian artifacts and the ongoing debate about repatriating Egyptian artifacts in the British Museum. It was an interesting mix of problems, but worked very well and brings up some very real modern issues for readers to chew on. The mystery keeps you guessing till the end, but I had some inclinations as to who was or wasn't guilty. It was a good balance of giving readers just enough they can figure it out with or slightly before the City Spies, but intricate enough it isn't glaringly obvious. I have several readers who will be super excited to get their hands on this.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. There are serious situations but no one is injured.
2024: Re-listen and I’m reminded how great the plots twists are in this installment! So glad I refreshed my memory for the upcoming book.
2023: This series is an all-time favorite! Four books in and I just love the characters so much. The team/mystery/spy plots are too notch, we always get a few questions answered and new ones come to the surface. I’ve listened to all of these and love the audiobooks too. So, so fun.
- unglaublich viel Spannung, Überraschungen, Geheimnisse, unerwartete Wendungen
I was also 100% convinced by the fourth part. I'm really looking forward to the next instalment, which will be published in the spring. The English audiobook was also a joy to listen to again.
In addition to children's spies, this series has everything a good children's series needs.
- social themes
- Conflicts and worries within the family and among friends, how to talk about them, how to resolve them and the reassurance of always being there for each other and liking each other.
- an incredible amount of suspense, surprises, secrets, unexpected twists and turns
I loved getting to learn more about Kat in City of the Dead! The various puzzles and intricacies of this mission gave her a real chance to shine. The plot was exciting and full of action and plot twists that I couldn't see coming. Even though there is a large cast of characters, they each are so unique and exciting to read about. The writing style adapts and changes to match the personality of each of the City Spies and keeps you glued to the page. I really enjoyed learning more about Mother and his family, along with how Kat came into the City Spies. As this series continues, I definitely think that readers of all ages could enjoy it. With that exciting cliffhanger, I'm excited to read book 5 soon!
If I had not been so busy these past few weeks, I would have read this book all in one sitting. It was so fast-paced, action-packed, and exciting and I never wanted to put it down! These books don't really have one main character, but each book focuses a tiny bit more on one character. This one focused more on Kat, and I loved that because she is my favorite character! I think I even mentioned that in my review of the book before this one. Kat reminds me a lot of myself, and I like when I can relate to the main character. Also, I have been watching the new National Treasure series on Disney Plus, and if you like that show I guarantee you'll like this book, and all the other City Spies books for that matter! Spy stories are just so much fun and I think James Ponti has created my favorite spy series yet. I really enjoyed this book, and I hope there will be a City Spies 5!!
These books are so much fun to read and make me want to travel the world. The kids are smart, witty, and entertaining and the found family plot makes me happy. We added a new character to this one and it was interesting seeing how the kids reacted differently to adding another person.
The setting of Egypt was great and it's always been on my list to go there one day. The writing helped me visualize the location, while keeping the story moving and full of action. After that ending, I hope there's another book so we can finally find out if Mother's wife and kids can be trusted and take down Umbra!
My Review: City of the Dead by James Ponti is installment 4 in the City Spies series.
About the Book: International espionage is being served up like never before! In this exciting installment, a young group of spies go on yet another adventure, seeking to solve a mystery that’s set before them. Clue after clue reveals more than they could ever know.
Narration: Spot on!
My Final Say: This series is insanely good!!! I’m a fan. All I have to say is KEEP ‘EM COMING, please.
4th book in the City Spies series-this one set in Egypt. Series aimed at middle school reader. Well done. The city spies are group of kids aged between 13-15 each with special skills which use in their assignments. Computer, math, physical abilities for example. They all live and work together and complete special assignments for the British government.
This book focuses on cyber attacks against businesses and government institutions though real targets unknown. All this includes a backdrop of Egyptian history. Fun read especially suitable for middle school reader.
I Wil a dot, I felt like the stories were getting a little formulaic; but Ponti introduced an element to this one that will keep readers guessing. And the end has me eagerly looking for the next installment to see how things develop. It feels like the series might be approaching a close, but maybe not.
This was probably the first book where I know absolutely nothing. Don’t get me wrong, James ponti is a good author and this series is cool, but this book did not at all stick with me. I can’t tell you a THING that happened
This book had an interesting start of how the young spies are on a mission in a city called "shadow city". Even though I haven't read the first series of the book the book is still awesome, especially for people who like fiction books.
