I get the in media res technique, but this freebie read more like an excerpt or teaser. I kept backtracking to ensure I didn't miss a flashback that gave more info as to what the heck was going on (like, WHAT was the origin of this "Feasting"? Or WHY was Caethes running? - the answer to which came pretty late in the story).
There was quite a bit of potential with this premise...I did like the suspense added by each impending wave of Feasting (that's a helluva handicap for an escaped slave on the run: "stop, drop, and f---" Ha!). And while I realize that significant background/world-building is hard to do, given the overall length of this short - I started losing interest.
The encounters were steamy enough , but got stale without a plot (and some background) to go along with it. Meh...it was free.

An interesting, if questionable start to this romance trilogy. Set in a world based on historic Rome and fantasy, this start is rather superficial with not much accomplished when it leaves off to be started again in the second book. It has, however, definitely peaked my interest enough to see how it will progress as a story outside of its erotic sex scenes. My judgment as yet suspended.
