Beth's intense crush on Professor Sinclair is threatening to derail her first year at university. Her concentration is shot to pieces and her coursework is suffering accordingly. Luckily, Professor Sinclair has an antidote to that. An extremely interesting antidote...
Mentor and acolyte soon become lovers in an affair that takes them both to places they never thought they'd be. But is it too far, too fast?
I am Justine Elyot. I love to write erotica and erotic romance. Elements you are likely to find in my work include: moustachioed melodrama villains, whips, wisecracks, knights in tarnished armour, damsels under duress, lovers, leather, aquiline features, references to popular songs. I massively overuse qualifiers like ‘really’, ‘quite’, ‘actually’ etc. and can’t resist the temptation to substitute long words for ‘said’. Reviewers either rave or cringe, with very little middle reactive ground (insert Marmite cliche here). Which will you do?
It is well know within my book buddy circle that my favourite genre of reading is teacher/professor/pupil relationships. I have read them all, some good some not so. Well this one is good, wickedly good and takes that relationship to a very different level.
Do you remember being 19? I do - it was a time of freedom. rebellion, drinking, partying and doing whatever took my fancy. When I was told “don’t” I did. I couldn't resist that challenge.
Beth’s attitude to life is similar - she loves her freedom, she party’s hard, smoking, drinking and living her teenage life to the fullest. Self discipline does not exist in her life. Her priorities were:
1. Don’t get thrown out of university; 2. Don’t get thrown out of accommodation; 3. Don’t get taken to court by the bank; 4. Party, drink and freedom; 4. Opera practice
Her first year is almost derailed due to her intense crush on Professor Sinclair . She and the other students view of him is that he is a God who can’t be known. His voice alone does naughty things to her and her imagination runs wild thinking about all the bad things she would like Professor Sinclair do to her. So much so her concentration goes and her coursework suffers.
During his lecture on the Cultural Legacy of the French Revolution she is too busy doodling “Sinclair is the Sex” on her notebook and as far as Beth is concerned he could be delivering his stylish verbiage and polished aphorisms in fluent Klingon for all the notice she takes during his lecture.
Beth is on Sinclair’s radar and makes an error of judgement and hands in her doodling notes instead of her essay. Professor Sinclair has an interesting antidote for Beth‘s juvenile actions - corporal punishment delivered in a very different way. Sinclair is an “unapologetic sadist” who loves to inflict fear and pain. He is arrogant and egotistical, an alpha male straight through to his core and is not a man Beth can negotiate with.
Under Sinclair’s tutelage her priorities soon become:
1. Do want Sinclair says; 2. Do what Sinclair says; 3. Do what Sinclair says and 4. Opera practice.
Lecture Notes is very erotic and kinky and once the action between Sinclair and Beth begins it doesn’t finish until the very last page. Beth’s journey is painful at times due to her habitual disobedience (sometimes self inflicted) but I enjoyed Justine Elyot’s evocative writing and the laugh out loud moments at the wisecracks between Sinclair and Beth.
If you like BDSM erotic romance, fun and laughter then I am sure you will love this - the Demon Headmaster had nothing on Eliot Sinclair.
What a treat! A Pygmalion themed student/Prof relationship about a typical university student: a lazy, shopping and pub loving, cash-poor 19 yo Beth Newland, who catches the eye of 39 Prof. Eliot Sinclair when she turns in her lust-for-him laden lecture notes instead of her student essay. He decides to take her in hand, literally with a whack, and later invites her to room with him when she faces eviction, so determined to mold her into the best Beth she can be, but also into submission.
This story is written with such wit, I found myself highlighting great quotes like crazy and constantly looking up the UK colloquialisms, both of which, more often than not, cracked me up. And rather than being horrified at Prof Sinclair's behavior, he is a bit spank* happy, okay a LOT spank happy, after all, I found that on the S & M spectrum he turns out not to be that bad, though there's certainly some growth in store for him. Really for them both.
I absolutely love Beth and Sinclair. Both are smart, strong, capable of witty banter, and just really solid, flesh and blood characters that I'll miss.
*spank, as in punishment; i.e., hand to bottom, NOT hand to um...er...not bottom.
I like this authors writing style. The theme is Erotica but she always writes witty dialogue that I like.
Beth is 19 and enjoying University life. She's overdrawn with the bank, overdue on her rent and overspending on designer shoes! Beth is in lust with one of the Lecturers, Professor Sinclair. During one of his lectures she is doodling on her paper about him. He has already reprimanded her for handing in her essays late so after leaving her latest essay in his in tray, she goes out drinking with her friends but later realises she has handed in her 'doodling' paper rather than the essay!
Finding out Professor Sinclair's address she goes to see him to try to swap the essays but he sees what she is upto. From that first meeting at Sinclair's home things move quickly for this pair. Finding herself about to be thrown out of her accommodation Sinclair allows Beth to stay in his spare room. They then begin a Dom/Sub relationship. Be warned, there is an awful lot of spanking in this story! At times I felt there was too much spanking and not enough of a BDSM theme but Sinclair is breaking Beth in gently!
Beth falls in love with her Dom and she wants him to feel the same but he gives very little away about himself, she's not even aware of his age (he's 39) but as their relationship progresses and when Sinclair pushes Beth a little too far, secrets from his past are revealed.
This is a good read. As with all of the books I have read by this author, it has a story. It's not just all about the sex!
The problem I have with student/ teacher books is that I can't resist them.
The next problem is that for every 6 I read 5 of those are sub par and 1 is excellent.
That's puts me off for awhile but then I'm always drawn back in again. The last 2 books I have read in this genre have left me in a slump and sadly this is one of them, granted it isn't as bad as the one before but still Lecture Notes and I did not get along.
You could put this down to the fact that I found the writing quite pretentious or maybe that I could not connect with either of the characters.
Sinclair was so shut off that I felt nothing from him or for him, Beth was extremely immature for her age and irritated me. I expected her to redeem herself at some point but she just never did.
Maybe it's me that needs spanking harshly and being sent to the naughty corner so I stay away from these books for a while.
Professor/student I love them all especially this one which at first you think Sinclair the professor is a little on the creepy side a predator after his prey.
Beth is one of his students who thinks he is sexy, tall, slender a heart throb with one hell of a sexy voice but certainly out of her league. Circumstances bring Beth to visit his home and things definitely heat up from there.
I thought Sinclair initially appeared to be a cruel dominatrix but Beth more than enjoyed being his submissive. His past raises it ugly head and unfortunately because of all the media attention this brings he feels his life is crumbling around him.
Their love and support for each certainly turns things around for them. Fantastic ending loved it.
Chapter 10 and I just can't go further. Reading even this long had been painful and not in a good way. I doubt it was good even for the heroine, despite of what she claims. There's bdsm and there's abuse. Where are safe words, where are boundaries? He justbtakes and orders and she has absolutely no say in anything, from the very beginning.
I love student/teacher romances, its my favourite kind of romance really, but this is just bad.
"Lecture Notes" was a freebie off of Amazon and while it took me a while to get into it, it turned out to be a pretty good book. ^.^
The main characters, 19-year-old university student Beth Newland and university professor Eliot Sinclair, who Beth says is nearly 20 years older than her, took longer than usual for me to grow any sort of attachment to. Usually, when I can't muster up any positive emotion for both main characters, I put the book on the back burner but I decided to simply take a break from reading and picked it up again the next day. As far as the supporting cast of characters were concerned, they really weren't all that memorable and a great number of them were unnecessary to the overall story.
Beth is, understandably so, what you would typically expect from someone her age. She's somewhat irresponsible, still trying to get her bearings in her first year at university, and makes certain decisions without really thinking them through (i.e. all things Sinclair). On the other hand, Sinclair comes off as pompous, domineering, and quite full of himself. The beginning stages of their relationship didn't have me oohing or aahing; rather, it came off as kind of awkward. Once Sinclair's secrets are revealed, I found myself actually beginning to like both Beth and Sinclair. Maybe it's because there was suddenly a new dynamic in their relationship. Sinclair wasn't as put-together as he seemed and Beth finally took charge for a change. ^.^
By the time I got to the end of the book, I was satisfied with how everything turned out. "Lecture Notes" gets 3.5 stars, rounded off to four stars for Goodreads' purposes.
I decided to be nice today and went for 4 stars instead of 3 but honestly it's more like 3.5.
I honestly loved the relationship between Sinclair and Beth for most of the story, however I felt like they needed to communicate more on what was expected of each. But that is a personal preference.
The story lost me a little with the twist, that felt forced and unnecessary outside of "explaining" his lack of trust. What it did for me, was break the trust of their relationship and I couldn't not get behind them forgiving eachother so easily. He broke her trust not only as a lover but has her Master/Dom. He lied to her and pushed her too far without listening to her, which I had a tough time getting over.
Overall, the BDSM aspect was delicious and I would read it again for those wonderful scenes, but I would probably skip the last few chapters as they really let me down.
I think this book went a little fast in the beginning, and a little unbelievable also. But it got a lot better as it went on, and even though I was a bit underwhelmed with Sinclair and Beth's personality/story, it was still very erotic, a scorching read indeed. If you'd like a book that is more into the sex in the story, than the character's background, this is an ideal read for you. I would've liked a bit more depth into the characters, but I did enjoy reading it anyways!
Hunky professor who lectures his student by applying kinky methods? Check
I didn't expect realstic fiction but at least a modicum of proper editing and formatting which my free Amazon copy didn't have, therefore I discontinued. DNF
This is an okay read for me. Beth & Sinclairs relationship had some benefits to it because it helped shape Beth into a better student but most of the book had too much dialogue going on in Beth's head.
This book will have you hot, bothered and wanting more. I was at first a bit put off by the role and rules that Sinclair held to Beth but I was very happy with the turn of events that changed everything.
This was a freebie from Amazon, and it turned out to be one of my current favorite books! Yes it's erotica, but there is so much more. The characters are relatable and charming. I also love the little mentions of history throughout the book. Will definitely read more by this author!
I've never really read an SM book such as this, so wasn't sure how I felt about it. Some parts of it took me a while to get through because I don't really understand the SM way. I did enjoy the story line though and would recommend it.
I only got 45% in and I just couldn't finish it...it wasn't for me. I wasn't appealed to the main character and his behavior. He treated her more like a father than anything. I put it down and figured I'd go back to it...I honestly have no desire to read it at all.
I was a bit meh with this book. The character's didn't connect with me and I really felt like we spent too much time in Beth's head or watching her get spanked... a LOT. It was well written with funny moments and the level of erotic was great.
Very compelling, sensual, forbidden(ish), highly erotic and I LOVED IT! Anyone that enjoys the erotic genre will enjoy their time spent with Lecture Notes ;)
