Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I really liked the toys when they first showed up. I thought it made for a unique bit of fantastic cultural flavour. It's a bit sad to hear that it all was just a part of the villain's machinations, powered by torture and misery, and that by the end of things they'll all be gone.
But at least we've got a bunch of little fairies to compensate.
As the battles continues we have one of the best fights between Luffy and Don Chinjao, learning his backstory with Garp an d the battle with Luffy is so awesome and then the KO'd with one single punch was epic, meanwhile in some other place Zoro and Franky meet up and then we elarn of Rebecca's plight and how she was connected to the old king and all, and now the final fight for the D Block begins! Also a great call between Blackbeard and Luffy, this arc is becoming epic with so many new and complex narratives being built on top of the existing layers and the battle scenes are really well done!
As always with post-time skip volumes, Oda Sensei crams a lot of character and lore into each volume and its honestly very hard to keep track of it all. Personally I would have picked one storyline (Luffy in the colosseum, Law vs the Navy and Doflamingo, the Straw Hats various fights, etc.). At the very least though it seems like the Colosseum battle royale, the dwarf rebellion and the living toys are all starting to converge so hopefully that will fix things.
Regardless, this was still a fun One Piece volume. The action set pieces with Luffy was a lot of fun after him sitting out the previous round. In terms of the other Straw Hats it's a shame most didn’t have too much to do this volume minus Usopp but I liked his plot of his boasts once again getting him into “trouble”. As for lore/mythology content Dressrosa is definitely adding a lot of tragedy (Oda’s really good at giving most characters them) between the revelation the toys were once people and Rebecca’s hated for her grandfather/family lineage (I suspect more will be revealed soon to show it was misplaced). Lastly I did like the revelation that Bartolomeo is a massive Luffy fanboy and I can relate to his feelings of nervousness with meeting a Straw Hat (got really nervous meeting Emily Rudd from the live action but that panned out beautifully, hope the same happens for Bartolomeo)

DRESSROSA ARC - PART 2 1. sanji falling for the classic "beautiful woman, have to help, can't be dangerous" trope - typical

3. international military draft? is that what akainu did after he became fleet leader?
4. btw, what is that black fist of luffy's? i've never really quite understood. is it his gear 2 + armament haki?
5. the tontattas is like me watching the bee's movie
6. i find it so funny that bartolomeo is a fan of luffy's (i mean, i am too!! so i get it)
7. rebecca :( the toy soldier :( aw, now i'm conflicted. i don't want her to die or to lose, but i want luffy to get ace's fruit. WHY GIVE ME THIS INTERNAL CONFLICT, ODA!!!! YOUUUU.....FRICKER
2025 reread : this arc is just packed with so many things. There's a ton of characters, history, subplots... Never a dull moment. But maybe a bit messy? Keeping track of everything quickly becomes complicated. I'm enjoying it though. But it might be because I've reread this several times already so I know what's important.
I don't like when arcs start being mostly fighting and I feel like that's the beginning of it. There's still a lot to learn about this island and what exactly motivates Law so I still love it.
I forgot I had this. Figured was a good time to start reading them again.
So, the art was outstanding. Really, from the war onward Oda impresses the heck out of me. So many details all over. Battle Royale section was on point. Everything big battle wise, he’s really on another level compared to other manga artists.
Only part I didn’t like is Sanji. Really can’t stand him as a character. The less of him the better. Early Sanji is great. But past volume 30 I find him super obnoxious.
Shout out to the art-art fruit. What a cool, weird power.
Volume 72 – “Dressrosa’s Forgotten” Secrets unravel. We learn about Dressrosa's past, the Tontatta dwarves, and how Doflamingo replaced King Riku using lies and control. Law’s tragic past with Corazon begins to take shape. The land of toys hides the most horrifying truth: the toys are people, transformed and forgotten by the world.
The fights in this one and in Dressrosa so far are so good: with new concepts, characters, and plot lines to the overall story. It was a good time. I loved Don Chinjao and Cavendish's characters.
One Piece, Vol. 72 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (712–721) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon continues the Dressrosa Arc. Sanji fall victim to Viola, one of the officers within the Donquixote Pirates, along with her subordinates. Meanwhile in Green Bit, Doflamingo and Fujitora arrived and confront Trafalgar Law into a standoff.
Fujitora attacks by bringing a meteor down to the ground. As the Straw Hats prepare to destroy the SMILE Factory, Usopp lies to the dwarves about being Montblanc Noland's descendant, and they respond by making him their leader in their battle against the Donquixote Pirates, dubbing him Usoland.
Meanwhile, back in Dressrosa, the Battle Royale for Block C has began, with Luffy excited to win the prize, the Flame-Flame Fruit. Luffy tames the Fighting Bull, which Hajrudin crushes and Luffy gets revenge by knocking Hajrudin out. The battle continues as more fighters are eliminated, and Luffy loses his helmet. Chinjao rushes toward Luffy, eager to end him, and the two clashes with Haki, knocking everyone out of the ring except them.
Luffy meets with the other gladiators after his victory and goes to eat with Rebecca. Rebecca shows him several prisoner gladiators who are forced to fight 1000 matches or until they die. Rebecca reveals that Thunder Soldier is her guardian and remembers how he took care of her and taught her to fight after her mother was killed. Rebecca then heads toward the ring as Block D is about to begin.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. It continues the Dressrosa Arc, which is divided into two stories – the Battle Royale that Monkey D. Luffy enters and eventually wins his block. The second story deals with the Straw Hats and their continuing mission to destroy the SMILE Factory, which just happens to be under the coliseum that Luffy is fighting in.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 72 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
sanji was captured by violet, who’s part of doflamingo’s crew. LOL SANJI IS WINNING HER OVER BY BEING PURELY A WOMEN’S MAN. so violet told him about doflamingo’s plans.
law, fujitora, and doflamingo are facing off.
franky and Mr.soldier are going to the factory as well.
the gnomes were saved by montblanc norland before and he became their hero. usopp tricked them into thinking that he’s related to norland.
sunny is being attacked
bellamy received instructions from doflamingo to kill luffy.
it’s finally luffy’s turn to fight. when the bull he was riding was knocked out, he got pissed at the giant AND THE GIANT FELL.
the toys in dressrosa were humans turned by a devil fruit user brought in by doflamingo.
franky met up with zoro who was with the other dwarfs.
years ago, while chinjao was drilling the land to dig out the treasure underneath, he had a fight with garp which caused his drill on his head to dent inwards and couldn't be used from then on. he hated garp for that and vowed that he would take his revenge even on garp's grandchildren.
luffy won after a punch!
bartolomeo is a fan of luffy's ever since marineford. don chinjao wants to thank luffy for giving his drill head back. rebecca lured luffy to the convict gladiators who are destined to die in the arena thanks to doflamingo's rule of a 1000 wins. when rebecca's mother died while trying to get food for her, mr. soldier was the one who brought her mother back to her. since then, mr. soldier vowed to take care of rebecca. rebecca's grandfather was the previous king and people hated him.
Luffy is battling in C-Block and it goes fiercely and intense. Don Chinjao have a grudge against Garp as he lost a battle 30 years ago. From Garp's punch, he lost his drill-like head. Luffy used his final move and repair Don Chinjao's head back to normal.
At the same time, Law is having a battle with Admiral Fujitora and Doflamingo. Nami, Brook, Chopper and Momonosuke are being attacked by Giolla who can turn everything into abstract arts. Law asked them to bring the ship to Green Bit and escape with Caesar.
Franky is being revealed by a toy soldier about Dressrosa's truth. The toy soldier bring him into another Tontatta tribe hideout. They planned to take down Doflamingo.
The battle for D-Block is about to start. Rebecca is the granddaughter of the previous Dressrosa's king, King Riku. She was hated by everyone. She wants the Mera Mera ni Mo, also to take down Doflamingo.
