The Fire Opal
The townsfolk of Port Chatre, Louisiana are all stunned when Liz Deveraux arrives for the funeral of her mother Ellie because everyone thought the young lady was dead. Her mother's epitaph is fitting, even though Liz loathes it. The stone states: "Guardian of the Fire Opal: At Last She Rests". These are the same words that are written on the stone of Liz's grandmother.
Liz's father Frank, the Protector, insists that "La Maladie Malefique" killed his beloved because he failed to protect her from the evil demon Ankouer. Frank knows that he has no choice but to enter the Bayou in order to fight the darkness in the demon's lair to regain the lost fire opal. Liz is stunned when her father goes swamp hunting. She turns to Zach Fortier, who always loved her, to help her rescue her father. Liz is the last surviving Guardian, but she does not believe in the family legend. She thinks that she and Zach are only saving a distraught, grieving person from himself. Little does she know that Ankouer plans on her elimination next. If she survives, perhaps her love for her protector Zach will flourish like that of her parents.

Sometimes people ask where I get my ideas and I can't comment too much on "ideas" either, since they come one at a time from different sources. SHADOW ON THE MOON came from a submission call for paranormal romance and since vampires were fairly well owned already, I decided to do werewolves. After that it became--and this is true for all books--a matter of putting the story together, scene by scene, then going back and making sure to leave in the good parts and take out the boring parts (which is my writing motto).
That seems to work for me. I've made a half dozen or so national bestseller lists, won a PRISM award for my sci-fi time-travel and been a finalist in a number of other well known writing contest. Now, I'm jumping into the pool of previously traditionally published authors who are choosing to publish independently. I'm truly enjoying the freedom and control this gives an author.

The Fire Opal (A dark fantasy novel) by Connie Flynn

What do I know about the Louisiana bayous, voodoo, magic, and swamps? THE FIRE OPAL (A dark fantasy novel) by Connie Flynn is devoted to mind-boggling research. The story is so eerie that readers will believe some of this story is a fantasy based on factual experience. Boy! Is it ever dark! The storyteller takes you through so many twists and turns that her imagination keeps you hooked for 416 pages.
The legend is about the women of the family who have been the Guardian of the Opal for years and it’s a strange gem. Liz Deveraux is next in line to carry on with duties although she tries to refuse. Legend has it that the men in their lives are their support except for reasons of divorce, infidelity, and weakness of character that make them a poor risk. Good, huh!
The Devil, Ankouer, lives as a powerful ‘presence’ and cannot be apprehended due to obscure magical powers. Few city dwellers believe this Devil exists whereas the bayou folk never speak about the ominous presence. The mystery is that if Ankouer exists, why can’t this Devil be found? Murders happen and suspects are next of kin.
There is a beautiful romance to be experienced in this novel. The mysterious disappearance and return of Liz Deveraux has the town baffled and whispering. Until now, Liz was thought to be dead. Recently, Dad sent for her because her mother died. Her wake is being held at a prominent friend’s home and the whole town is gathered.
Our hero, Zach Fortier and Liz were an item set to marry in their youth until, one day, his beloved Liz mysteriously vanished. There are major issues and painful memories that need to be resolved between them. But get ready for other ‘encounters’ because their relationship, although complicated, involves them in eerie voices, people, and investigative mysteries and deaths .
There seems to be a huge gap of information about deaths in the swamps. Zach, our hero, is trying to uncover leads for his connection. Dad walks around saying that his wife was killed by the Devil, Ankouer. He doesn’t know how to explain himself so that others will understand but swears that it’s common knowledge, among older cajun families.

Mediocre paranormal romance set in Cajun country. Alcoholic chain smoking man reunites with frigid childhood lover in deep denial, reunited in battle with evil, when suddenly they are healed of their own demons. Predictable and formulaic. OK for light fluff read.

I really enjoyed the Fire Opal it was refreshing to read a paranormal without vampires or shifters, it had a great creepy storyline and i am interested to read connie flynns other novels.

It was a good story. Liked the creole based story with the mix of gris gris added in.
