What events shaped Orion and turned him into the man he was at the start of Across the Universe? This story explores just that.
Orion started off as just another Elder, due to inherit the leadership of the spaceship Godspeed. When he starts to question the world around him, though, things quickly change. He meets a young woman that he may have feelings for. But if she gets in the way of his revenge, he can ignore his feelings for her...right? Or is love a choice after all?
Beth Revis writes books. She also eats too much chocolate, wishes she could travel more, and prefers puppies to people. Beth lives in rural NC with her boys: one husband, one son, two very large puppies.
Forgot that I read this as part of Shards and Ashes in 2013! I did just re-read it because I didn't remember it. ;) But I really liked it! Makes me want to re-read the trilogy! I loved this trilogy!!
This is story had so much potential that I feel it should've been much longer. The name choosing of Orion and how he becomes the Recorder and how he kept doubting himself over his thoughts about revolution and We learn the circumstances under which Orion meets Mags and then they become involved in a romantic relationship, but it would have been nice if their relationship had been more fleshed out and how he CHOOSE not to love her. It really broke my heart. I liked Mag a lot, she was just so rebellious and full of life but I can see why Orion did what he did.
"Remember what you said about the baby, Mag? I ask gently "No" she whsipers "You said you didn't have to love it" "I realized something then, Mag" I say, still using the gentlest voice I can muster. "I realized then that LOVE CAN BE A CHOICE."
It explains some, but I feel it went over a lot of things so fast that you can't feel connected with the two characters. I feel that there should have been more for us to understand more.
This is a small novella that is included as part of the collection: Shards and Ashes. My review was given on the collection as a whole so it can be found there instead.
I enjoyed learning more about Orion's personality and reasoning. He's a protagonist that never felt like a villain but who certainly wasn't meant to be a hero either. He never cared about that. He did questionable things but for understandable reasons, that's what I find interesting with this character.
I wish we had more scenes with Amy and Elder from his POV.
I thought it was a very good novella. I was however not convinced this was the reason for Orion's plan. It never really explained Orion's feelings after big things happened and went straight into what he does without explaining. Exp: I wish we got more of Mag before she got political and I think she was smarter than her later actions showed. It was definitely not as good as As They Slip Away, her other novella, which impacted me more than most books I read and the best novella i've ever read. Overall, good novella, confusing judgement on the characters part.
"But I realized soon enough that asking questions was the worst possible thing I could ever do. I did it anyways."
I'm so in love with across the universe's characters but I will always have a hate-love relationship with Orion. I guess I understand why he did everything, and that's frustrating.
While this novella tells the the story of Orion, the way he hid from Eldest and how he became the Recoder, I don't think that it's a must-read. The original series is great as it is and gives all the answers, but the true fans would certainly find this short addition interesting.
This was okay. I didn't really feel like it was necessary to the overall story but I did enjoy reading a bit more about Orion's background and how he became what he became. This offered a bit of insight, still don't like his character though.
Loved this, makes me miss the world of Godspeed. I just wish I would have read it closer to when I read the series because I have forgoten a lot. Great to read a story about a side character that has a very interesting past only slightly touched on in the core books.
Despite it being years since I finished the main novels in the series, I still wanted to return to this world and read the novellas that give more background and history to the story. This one provides some back story to Given the background provided in this super short, but effective novella my feelings from the original series towards Orion are just as strong, if not stronger.
Just a few pages allows you to look deeper on what Orion had to do to survive and plans for the future on the ship along with Mag. It's been a while since I read the series so I'm not sure where Mag fits in along with her grandfather and the Doc but it was still great to read a little more about the space journey.
The origin story could have been longer than Luthor's story. I wanted to know the years in the Recorder room that he was in and his perspective of Elder growing up. That would have been stellar.
