This sequel to A Sound of Crying has the same good characterization and interesting interpersonal dynamics as the first book (which was originally published in the UK as The House in the Woods), but lacks the supernatural element. Logical fastidious Frederick makes a return visit to his highly imaginative cousin Polly, and her large untidy family. The cousins get drawn in to a turf war with the tough next-door neighbor over possession of the key to a local abandoned house. Although Polly's (and her siblings') fear of ghosts is touched upon often, everybody has conveniently forgotten that in the previous book she actually experienced the presence of a real one.
