あ、もうー

I am seriously unsure what to do about my ratings. I need a system here! The thing is, I liked this book - parts of it I liked a lot - but overall it felt like something was missing, so I'm settling for three stars even though it had some five star moments.

Nanami Heki is a stenograph at the Japanese parliament. He's a very ordinary young men and lives his life feeling almost invisible. Every time he eats his bentou in the cafeteria, he hears the voice of Nishiguchi, a popular journalist and finds himself more and more captivated by the older man. And as it so often happens, one day they meet face to face and slowly become acquainted with each other. Soon Heki realizes he's fallen in love with Nishiguchi, but not only does Nishiguchi still seem to be hung up on his ex-wife, he also things Heki is happily married, due to an misunderstanding Heki failed to clear up in time. But after various more or less dramatic things happen, all differences are overcome and the two live happily ever after.

It took me a while to get into the story, and because of lots of political talk I sometimes missed some of the details. But the cover and the color illustration at the beginning drew me in because of their gentleness, and that word definitely describes Heki and Nishiguchi's relationship quite well. In a way what bothered me most was that there sometimes was too much going on in each their lives and there wasn't enough interaction between the two of them, even though all in all I liked the plot. There just wasn't really enough angsting and loving (and too much vocab I was too lazy to look up...).

But on the plus side, the author takes her time to develop the relationship, and even though there's no doubt who tops in bed, Nishiguchi is no typical seme. There are two short stories set after the main novel told from his perspective and they're quite cute.

(Something that also stopped me from giving this more stars was that stupid emphasis on "feminine" and "masculine" behaviour. It comes up quite often in BL, of course, but some cases are worse than others, and this was more of the latter. Too bad, because I really liked Heki and the atmosphere around him.)

Updated to four stars after rereading in context :)
