Abbie didn't think she had any enemies... until it became clear that someone wanted her dead. First, someone tried to run her down with a truck. Next, she got phone calls and letters threatening her life. Then, she found a strange room full of life-size photos - of herself! Someone is out to get Abbie, and Abbie is determined to find out who it is. But she can't trust anyone, not even her best friend. Who could hate her so much?
With revisiting so many of the Point Horrors this October, the similar storylines have become even more apparent. I felt that this was an inferior version of The Stalker
The main problem with this take on that story was the girl being targeted was harder to root for. Bates try’s to make her interesting by having Abbie being a contentiously healthy eater, but it felt like a heavy handed message to teen readers to stop eating chips!
I always rate this books compared to others in the series and this was a much weaker entry.
Abbie has a fan. Someone who is just crazy for her. Crazy enough to kill?
This was a fun and suspenseful read! I enjoyed the characters and how the story played out. There were a few suspects that kept me guessing until the end.
I read this with my book club that I run on Instagram where we revisit Point Horror and other books from our childhood - @talespointhorrorbookclub
Tagline - She used to be dead popular ….. .
Memorable For – Abbie’s food talk and that eating healthy can actually save lives #iykyk 😂
Trigger Warning - Eating Disorders whilst not mentioned by name are highly implied in the book with the main character
Some Thoughts -
Abbie has a premonition that there’s something going to happen like a dark cloud hanging over her!
Poor Abbie Grant has only gone and got herself a stalker! Someone is trying to kill her. She’s really scared, but she can’t trust anyone, not even her best friend. Abbie has to find out who wants to kill her before she ends up dead.
First, someone tries to run her down in a truck. Next the life-threatening phone calls and letters start. Then, she walks in on a room plastered with life-size photos of herself...
Other highlights include parents who have gone to Hawaii for 3 weeks, characters that think they are safer outside the house than locked in, a showdown ending that puts into use all those vitamins we should be taking and a questionable motive!
And not forgetting the rubbish police with the classic line -
“It sounds like someone isn’t happy with you” 😂
It’s bard not to talk about this one without spoiling it so just go along for the ride 😜
I was expecting to hate this one, as the author has struck out with me in the past. I wasn't a fan of "Party Line" or "Final Exam", but I read this one because of the awesomely bonkers cover. And you know what, I didn't hate it 😅😅
Abbie is our annoying protag who goes around exclaiming "WHY MEEE?? WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?" First she almost gets run over by a car in the blinding snow. Then someone breaks her bedroom window with a ladder, breaks in and ransacks her room. And finally she starts getting creepy notes with cut-out letters, ransom style, that say shit like "ITS NOT OVER U C IM KRAZY 4 U" 🤣🤣🤣
The obvious culprit would be this dude Joey (who I pictured as Joey Lawrence LOL because this IS 1996 after all). Joey is obsessed with Abbie and we find out his locker and his bedroom are literal SHRINES to Abbie with photos and posters of her everywhere (SO KREEPY AND KRAZY). But Abbie soon realizes everyone is a suspect, even her bff Taylor.
Random observations and notes (MILD SPOILERY THINGS WILL COMMENCE)
- Abbie and her bff want to go see a horror movie, described as the one that critics hate...you know, the one "with worms crawling out of eyeballs and stuff". UMMM missed opportunity to name drop a rad movie from 1996?? The Frighteners or Scream or Hellraiser Bloodline?? COME ON, A. BATES!! 💀💀
- Abbie is a devout health food nut which I see a lot of people who reviewed this book had issues with? I say, bring on the wheat germ and big bottles of nutritional supplements!! 🤣🤣 I don't think I've ever come across a health food nut in a YA thriller/horror before and as a fellow vegetarian, I am all for this 😜
- Speaking of big bottles of nutritional supplements...maybe you should start carrying one around with you. You never know if it might get you out of a pickle 😜
- Don't worry, no reveals as to Who Dunnit here. But MAN, THE MOTIVE FOR THE CULPRIT WAS SO. DUMB. Read the damn book so I can gripe about it with you.
3 out of 5 old school ransom-style letters left in your locker. SO KRAZY AND SKARY! KEEP KALM AND B KAREFUL, OK? 💀💀💀
One-Line Review: They missed out by not calling Abbie’s health food store Oats and Dreams.
Full Review:
Darn it, I really don't know how I feel about this book.
Abbie is a pretty normal girl. Sure, she's a fanatic for health food and paranoid about getting cancer (slightly odd traits in teenage girls!) but aside from that she's pretty normal. So she's not sure how she's acquired a stalker. Well, kind of a stalker. There's no actual stalking going on per se - although someone (or something) breaks her window one night, and someone's leaving her notes that say things like "IM KRAZY 4 U" - but she's definitely feeling stalked. She's not sure who it is, though - the weird guy from computer class who seems to be obsessed with her? The cute guy she has a crush on? Her best friend? Abbie suspects everyone of being out to get her.
Does that make any sense? Meh, probably not.
Most of this book seems to be about not stalking, but Abbie's paranoia. As it turns out, someone actually was after her, so perhaps paranoia is the wrong word. But she certainly has what seem to me to be overly strong reactions to what could have been simple coincidences.
I guess maybe that's what I liked about the book. Everything could so easily have all been nothing. It kept me wondering.
First occurrence: Abbie nearly gets run over by a car. This could easily have been an accident - it's snowing, and she was dancing in the road, silly girl.
Second occurrence: A note in her locker that says "B MOR KRFL U C IM KRAZY 4 U". Appalling txtspk aside, I don't see anything scary about this note - if I got it I'd assume secret admirer, not threat.
Third occurrence: Joey from computer class stares at Abbie a lot, according to Ab's BFF Taylor. Abbie has never really noticed this, so I can't imagine he can be staring TOO much, but OK. Then he rushes to Ab's defence when she and Taylor are arguing at lunch. The combination of these two things convinces Abbie that she needs to break into Joey's locker, and when she finds pictures of her in there, she breaks into his house and finds a veritable shrine. It annoys me that she was proved right here, because it seems like such a reach to me. You know how many guys have stared at me in class over the years? Too many. You know how many have shrines to me in their bedroom and stalk me in their spare time? I don't know. I'm guessing none, unless they keep it to themselves.
Fourth occurrence: Abbie's window gets broken in while she's asleep. Okay, this is a legit thing to be frightened of, but do you know how she deals with that fear? The next night - AFTER her brother Brett has boarded up the window - she insists that she and Brett sleep in the bathroom. Other rooms with windows aren't safe in case whoever it was tries to break in again. And other rooms without windows (like the basement) aren't safe because the door hinges are on the outside of the door and someone could come in through a window and take the door off its hinges. Ergo, they have to sleep in the bathroom. Seems to me that a better choice would be a) sleep on the floor in Brett's room with a baseball bat; or b) go buy a shotgun. Hey, they do it in Christopher Pike.
I don't want to call Ab this paranoid, overreacting, wimpy eejit, because as I said, someone actually WAS after her. But...actually, I do want to call her those things. So much of the book seemed to be Abbie making wild leaps of logic - and having them proved right.
Yet I did enjoy the book. I half expected there to not be a bad guy at the end, and to find out it was all imagination and coincidence. I do like a book that can keep me guessing.
Verdict: Annoying heroine who somehow made annoying work for her.
Abbie and her stepbrother, Brett, have the house to themselves whilst their parents are on holiday but instead of 3 weeks of freedom Abbie is being targeted. A vehicle tried to run her down, her bedroom gets trashed, threatening notes and phone messages. Someone wants to hurt Abbie, who is it? And who can she trust?
A fun mystery with lots of suspects, who is hunting he? Is it Joey, who is obsessed, with photos of Abbie all over his bedroom walls and in his locker, Clif, her crush who suddenly takes an interest in her, her best friend Taylor who finds her addiction to healthy foods stupid and thinks she has the perfect life or someone she doesn’t know!
As Abbie starts to feel more trapped and scared she realises she has to find who it is before they kill her.
The total Point Horror tropes of absent parents, weird friends and unlikely scenarios are here of course but Abbie’s fear of cancer and fanaticism about bad foods is new and weird! Not my favourite Point Horror as I’m sure the stalker theme has been done better but it was fun!
All point horror reviews, are reviewed against other point horror books only…3.5/4…..although it was completely ridiculous I still really enjoyed it, I got through this very quickly, it flowed well and kept me wanting to return. Poor Abbie is being stalked, and followed, and awful things keeping happening, but who’s driving her crazy? This book is definitely a crazy ride!
I had to purchase a Kindle edition of this one because I have yet to find a reasonable price physical copy of Krazy 4 U by A. Bates. All of those later Scholastic Point Horror books run a pretty penny and I only get so many gifts cards a year to buy books if I don't find them out in the wild of Half Price Books or a thrift shop.
Two...I get two gift cards. Three if I'm lucky...
Since it was an e-book, it didn't take me long to read this one. It was a very slow burn to get to the craziness that you would expect from these YA books and it left the reveal to the very end.
Part of that makes me feel that either it was rushed or that Bates didn't really know how she was going to end it. You get a few red herrings in the book proper but only a few with real plausible reasons even if it boils down to just the fact that all teenagers just seem to be psychopaths...
Main character Abbie Grant does seem like the type that would have any enemies. She doesn't think her red hair and green eyes are anything special, she isn't popular or a loser, she's smart in school but not like a genius and she doesn't do extracurricular activities.
Her stepbrother Brett is the swimmer and the popular one who runs in his own circle of over-achievers and is handsome enough that her BFF Taylor crushes on him. You would also think that Taylor would have more enemies as she is always eating junk food yet never gains weight, has long blonde hair and is always attracting guys without even trying.
Abbie gets a weird feeling one day at Taylor's that something bad is going to happen and it just happens to coincide with the fact that she and Brett are home alone while their folks are away in Hawaii for their proper honeymoon they never really had even though it has been eight years.
Three weeks alone with no parents being overprotective...it may seem a blessing to most teens but for Abbie it is like a bad omen. Perhaps she is just a little high-strung but losing your mother at the age of eight from cancer will have you being cautious.
Abbie doesn't like germs and she tries to eat as healthy as possible, even working at a health food store, so it might make her seem a little standoffish to tell you why you shouldn't be eating those fries or should try some sort of herb that no one has heard of...maybe it rubbed someone the wrong way.
Leaving Taylor's house for home, Abbie is almost ran over by a large vehicle but walks away with a cut on her hand and some bruises, one a goose egg on her forehead. The next day at school, Abbie finds a piece of paper falling out from one of her books and she and Taylor see the message made out of cut out letters:
B MOR KRFL U C IM KRAZY 4 U
Both girls think it is nothing more than a coincidence and head to computer lab where Abbie tries to have Taylor guess just who she has a crush on. Abbie's crush is a boy named Clif Howard but when class is over all Taylor notices is just how intensely Joey Mowry has been staring at Abbie. It isn't any secret to Abbie as Joey has been crushing on her for years but soon, Abbie is wondering if Joey is as obsessed with her as Taylor suggests...
The window to Abbie's room is broken at night while she is sleeping and the next day, Taylor pays a boy named George to break into Joey's locker for Abbie. Pictures of her are posted all over his locker and she finds he has keys to a truck...a dark blue that can come out from nowhere in the darkness and almost run someone down?
Too bad her crush Clif also happens to have a big, dark blue truck...a Toyota just like Joey's.
Abbie use to be so level-headed but now she is even beginning to have her doubts about Taylor as she finds herself and her BFF bickering lately about the dumbest things even though they have been friends for five years since middle-school when Taylor moved to town.
Whoever is "krazy" about Abbie is making her just as crazy and part of that is that everything that made her feel safe...is being violated. Soon, her car is stolen and her room is vandalized and the cops find there are no fingerprints on anything.
We get the reveal and then an ending of exposition to fill in the plot threads we have going on.
Abbie is a pretty good protagonist as she doesn't completely whine about her situation and is genuinely angry at being stalked. She doesn't do anything unnecessarily stupid and is very smart in trying to protect herself. Abbie has morals and stands up for herself even to her best friend and her stepbrother.
I'm not particularly crazy about Krazy 4 U by A. Bates but at least I'm glad there was a way for me to finally read it to end the suspense of seeing how good or bad it was and in the end...it's a MEH.
I enjoyed reading this book. Abbie is likeable enough and not a complete moron. She tries to work out who is behind the attacks and her actions make sense (most of the time).
The main let down was the flimsy motive of the antagonist and the obvious red herring.
Considering who the perpetrator was and the closeness they managed I'm surprised he didn't try and poison Abbbie through her health food stuff as she's the only one that eats it.
I read this book because Teen Creeps will be doing it on an upcoming podcast episode.
This book seems to have just aged poorly overall. I understand the point of Point Horror books, but this one is especially egregious for several reasons.
The endless fake-outs at the end of practically every chapter gets repetitive and monotonous.
Brett and Abbie obvious benefit from extreme privilege. Their parents leave for a multi-week vacation and leave them with a credit card to apparently spend as much money as possible while they're gone! Abbie especially thinks incredibly highly of herself because she's constantly being judgmental towards what seems to be her only friend, Taylor.
Abbie's room gets "broken" into. So instead of handling the situation like a responsible person, she then decides to pay to break into someone she suspects' locker and then when that wasn't enough, enters his house in a way that takes advantage of his mother's politeness.
That can almost be forgiven though because they write Joey to be the creepiest suspect with having unsolicited candid shots taken of her posted all over his room, locker, and car.
But instead of punishing him for being a total creep, Abbie ends up forgiving him in the end all because he was being creepy to "protect" her from her own brother who is supposedly the one who is "Krazy 4 U". This is a terrible message to send to the target audience of young adult girls. If the total creep is stalking you, forgive him if he tries to save your life and protect you!
There's so much more wrong with this short 200 page book, but it's honestly not worth the time getting into.
If you're planning on going through the Point Horror books, this is an absolute pass in my eyes; Abbie is truly an unlikable protagonist, this book sends terrible messages, and this book only served as a waste of $6.

As soon as I picked up this Point Horror it all came rushing back to me that this was the last Point Horror I read in my teenage years! At the ripe old age of 16 I picked this up and thought I would give the series one more go after being disappointed by a Point Crime... and I was completely on the money for guessing who Abbie's stalker was and because it was so predictable I hated it. And as I was entering my teenage pretentious faze I didn't see the funny side of the krazy story AT ALL! I mean, hanging around in the dark outside your house to catch your stalker in the act... Who does that?! Absolutely ridiculous. I distinctly remember throwing this book down and getting rid of all my Point Horrors (which I have since had to collect back again to reread them!) as I hated it so much. I was also disgusted by Abbie's healthy lunches, but looking back she was actually ahead of her time with the wholegrains and almonds.
However, on a reread this book was not that bad. I can see the funny side of it now and did enjoy myself revisiting the bananas-ness. And I can say for sure this one is memorable. The plot has stuck with me for 30 years!
Abbie's parents are away for 3 weeks. She and her step-brother are at home going about their daily routines. All of a sudden, she finds a strange paper in a book that was in her locker. The note says, in cut out letters, I'm really Krazy 4 U. Then other odd things begin to happen to her and her life is in danger. She is almost run down by a car during a snowstorm, then her bedroom window is smashed during the night, etc. She doesn't know who to trust. She is even suspicious of her best friend Taylor. Then she discovers a guy at school has pictures of her in his bedroom and in his car. This book was written for teens/young adults. My daughter and I read this aloud together for fun. Abbie and Taylor were the most obnoxious characters. This book is not a keeper on her shelf or mine.
A quick and easy read in the Point Horror collection. This one focuses on Abbie, a teenage health food fanatic, who is being stalked by an unknown person. But who could it be? Her best friend, her new love interest, her stepbrother, or an obsessed boy? As with all Point Horror stories, the answer is fairly expected from the outset after discarding all of the red herrings. I like to see the usual Point Horror tropes have been continued in this book, i.e., a female protagonist, absent parents, suspicious friends and family members, action set at night, and at school. It's not the best in the collection, but its OK.
On a scale from 1 to KrAzY, this is absolutely bonkers. Rounded up for that ending alone.
- all the boyz are pretty sus - Abbie, our protag, clearly has an unhealthy obsession/fixation with food, but it's kinda downplayed even though it comes up quite a lot - her stalker's obsession with her is also downplayed and eventually dismissed ??? "Weird, but nbd", basically. Thought it was strange that we were meant to sympathize with him at the end. What kind of message is that - can't get over the black pepper and vegetarian supplement as her choices of defense. Final scene will forever live rent-free in my head
This is my first read of this one and it is one of my favorites I think. I think its actually terrifying just how much the villain scares here and the lengths they go to! Like this is pretty serious. Also, the brothers reaction!?
And the police dont take it seriously!! Anyways, I was right who I thought it was but not the motive. Also, Abby is very strict on herself and mature - I like how she was strong mentally. (But also running after the suspected stalker!?)
Four stars.

I loved the build-up of the book. I loved the uncertainty and the slow realisation that no matter where she went Abbie wouldn’t be safe. However, I was disappointed with the ending. I liked Brett and thought he was a good brother. No real motive was established till we found out it was home and it seemed like a lousy explanation. I would have preferred if Joey or Taylor were to blame.

Abbie is one of the most irritating Point Horror heroines. Her personality is 'I like healthy food' and that's it. We have the usual absent PH parents. We have appalling 90's sexual politics. We have many red herrings. I liked it.
I read this when I was very young, maybe 10, and loved it. The storyline stuck with me for a long time (now mid 30s and still think about it!) A good amount of mystery for a teen read.
