The Preppy Cookbook: Classic Recipes for the Modern Prep

Rate this book
Are you planning the menu for your local junior league’s next luncheon? Wondering what cocktail to sip on while spectating at Wimbledon? Searching for the perfect casserole that tastes just the way Mummy used to make it?

With answers to all these questions and more, The Preppy Cookbook will guide you, step by step, in creating a kitchen, and a world, that exemplifies the preppy lifestyle. This beautifully illustrated cookbook from Christine E. Nunn, the owner of Picnic, offers more than 125 perfectly tested recipes.

Readers will not only delight their taste buds with mouthwatering photographs of summer Lobster Rolls and The Perfect Pot Roast, but they’ll also discover The Preppy Cookbook is a cheeky, cover-to-cover read that is as witty as it is delicious. With droll but wise inflection, Nunn shares time-honored traditions and cites proper blue-blood etiquette. For example, always pick up asparagus with your fingers; never use a fork unless it is smothered in Easy and Perfect Hollandaise sauce. Brunch begins at 12:15 pm sharp. And gentlemen, when cocktailing, remember to bring a church key.

Whether it’s planning a wedding shower, serving hors d’oeuvres at the annual tree-trimming party, firing up a lobster bake in Maine, or finding the cure for a Sunday morning hangover, The Preppy Cookbook will provide you with an arsenal of great recipes for all occasions.

I want to cook all of these recipes

With the exception of the one with eggplant. I grew up in a town mentioned in The Preppy Handbook. While my family did not engage in any of the sporty activities or summer anywhere but our own house, these recipes remind me of how my family cooked and celebrated holidays.

My People!

Love this cookbook! These are my people, I grew up with most of the recipes! I can't wait to make them again.

I was interested in this book because the author opened a much-lauded restaurant in my town recently. Also, because I was a fan of her previous place, Picnic. So I knew the food was good.

I found this book to be much more interesting and versatile than I expected. A lot of the recipes are classics, and she covers a lot of ground (holidays, small groups, parties, comfort food). The preppy 'frame' is kind of funny if you don't take it too seriously - she's nowhere near as obnoxious as the preppy handbook, which is a good thing. This would be a good gift for someone who's graduating from college or just getting their own place.

The recipes span a lot of levels and prep times. I wish she had included cooking time in the recipe header, but you can gauge it pretty easily. Most of these aren't weeknight-friendly, though a few are. And almost everything is family-friendly, and the ingredient lists are not too exotic.

This really is worth checking out as a great comfort-food reference. And I can't wait to try The Grange, her new place in town!

I received this copy for free through Goodreads First Reads and was not obligated or required to write a review.

I live very close to Christine Nunn's new restaurant, and I have read a lot about/from her in our local newspaper, so I was very interested in this cookbook. I was very excited to win it, and I haven't been disappointed. I unfortunately haven't gotten to try out her restaurant yet, but the recipes in this cookbook definitely make me want to get there. While I didn't enjoy some of the "fluff" parts of the cookbook, the important part (the recipes) is quite excellent. Some of the recipes seem like they would be very high in calories, but there are a lot that are healthy, look extremely tasty, and doable.

This book seems a lot more useful than I had anticipated it would be. I love the way it is arranged in themes such as brunch, holiday food, cocktail parties, etc. It also has suggested menus for certain events such as picnics, which I think is very considerate! Also, I like that if a recipe requires a certain sauce/dressing/whatnot, there would be like a "sidenote" recipe on the next page of said sauce/dressing/whatnot.

The recipes themselves all look delicious. I have not tried them out yet but I definitely will! This book is a good way to get inspiration for delicious meals to make.

tl;dr: Awesome cookbook- worth getting.

I received my copy of this book as a First Reads giveaway through Goodreads. I love cookbooks and was so excited when I found out that I won this book. I have to say that I enjoyed this cookbook quite a bit. There were some fabulous recipes that I can't wait to try. The pictures are wonderfully done and make everything look so appealing and appetizing. I enjoyed the layout of this cookbook. It was mostly a recipe book with journal/memoir entries about times she had tried recipes.

This cookbook had some good ideas, and some interesting recipes that I can't wait to try!
I do wish there were more recipes, and less "fluff", but overall I'm looking forward to the dishes, and to using some of the entertaining ideas.

Tongue-in-cheek cookbook that is separated into different holidays and occasions. The writing is fun, the photographs are beautiful. The recipes are hit or miss but that could be chalked up to my non-preppy upbringing.

I liked several of the recipes and serving ideals. Some of which I will be using at an event in a few weeks!
