About the author

Mannu Bhandari was born on April 3, 1931, in Bhanpura, Madhya Pradesh, India. She attended school in Ajmer and later she graduated from Calcutta University in 1949, followed by an M.A. degree in Hindi from the Banaras Hindu University in 1953.
She is wife of famous Hindi writer Rajendra Yadav, with whom she co-wrote the book, Ek Inch Muskaan (A Little Smile).

In post independent Hindi literature many new women writers emerged
and attracted the attention of readers and critics but after initial shining some
of them did not make writing of their successful career. Many women writers
have entered the arena of literary writing. Several highly talented writers have
enriched Hindi literature with their creative writings. To name a few Usha
Priyamvada, Malti Joshi, Dipti Khandelwal, Mridila Garg, Mannu Bhandari,
Shubha Verma are some of the most accomplished contemporary Hindi
women writers. Their writing reflect how modernism, contemporary social
situations and currents and cross currents at life have molded their writing and
subject matter as well as impact on them. Moreover these women writers
have written about Indian women, their pains, conflicts, predicaments against
the background of contemporary India. They have focused their attention not
only on the outer situation and conflict but also on inner turmoil of modern
women. In this reference writer like Mannu Bhandari deserves special
attention. Her contribution to the world of fiction dates to the 6os. She has
written in and experimented with varieties of genres of literature like the short
story novel, political novel, literature for children, drama, screen play, and
dialogues for film etc. Mannu Bhandari has also chaired the directorship of
Premchand Srujanpith in Vikram University, Ujjian. In 2008 Mannu Bhandari
was given for her autobiography Ek Kahani Yah Bhi the prestigious Vyas
Sanmaan for year 2008, which is instituted by the K.K. Birala Foundation and
given every year for outstanding literary work in Hindi authored by Indian citizens.

ये कहानियां हैं। काफी अच्छा संग्रह था ये और कहानियाँ रोचक और दिल को छू लेने वाली थीं ।

10 कहनियों के इस संग्रह में एक कहानी का शीर्षक है "त्रिशंकु" लेकिन सभी 10 कहानियों में पात्रों की स्थिति त्रिशंकु सी है अतः इस संग्रह का शीर्षक बहुत ही सार्थक बन पड़ा है। त्रिशंकु वाली स्थिति में स्त्री पात्र भी हैं, पुरुष पात्र भी और कहीं पूरा परिवार ही।

कहीं युवा-अवस्था में प्रेम/वासना में पड़ कर अब ऐसी किसी संभावना से खुद को सजगतापूर्वक बचाये रखने की कोशिश करती प्राध्यापिका हैं तो कहीं अधर पर लटकीं एक नामी चित्रकार हैं जो दरक चुके दाम्पत्य को सँभालने का बोझ ढो रही हैं। कहीं ऐसी नौकरीपेशा स्त्री से सामना होता है जो घर की आर्थिक जिम्मेदारी सँभालने में ऐसी झुलसी हैं कि प्रेम का फुहार पाने के चक्कर में खुद पर बिजली गिरा बैठती हैं।

पुरुष पात्रों की बात करें तो ― घर-परिवार के लिए 3-3 वर्ष तक घर से दूर समुद्री जहाज में मज़दूरी कर घर लौटने वाला पुरुष न तो घर में फिट बैठ रहा और न जहाज में मन रम रहा। पेट काटकर इंजीनियरिंग पढ़ने को भेजे गए युवक अपने ऊपर लदी घर की आशाओं और आसन्न बेरोजगारी के बीच लटका है। पसंद के पेशा में असफल हुआ व्यक्ति का स्वाभिमान परे रखकर दो पैसे के लिए नौकरी करने और दुबारा अपना काम शुरू करने के स्वप्न के मध्य लटका हुआ है।

शीर्षक कहानी में घर और बच्चों को मॉडर्न खुला माहौल देने की कोशिश करती माँ खुलेपना और पुराने संस्कारों के मध्य जबतब लटक जा रही हैं।

कुल मिलाकर सारी कहानियाँ आस-पास दिखने वाले पात्रों के इर्द-गिर्द बुनी गई हैं। हो सकता है कि पढ़ते हुए कहीं अपना त्रिशंकु वाला चेहरा भी दिख जाए।

This book is a collection of short stories based set around commonplace life, the simplicity of the plots and the ability of Mannu Bhandari to pen down the emotions of the characters are what makes her writings remarkable. The themes revolve around many topics: lost love, inter-generational gap, corruption, poverty, hopes and dreams, the transition from being a child to an adult with responsibilities, and so on.

The title story "Trishanku" was most heartfelt for me: set around the late 1990s, this is about a 15-year old girl (the narrator) whose parents are way more liberal in their parenting than other contemporary parents (even by today's standards) who galvanize friendship between her and some neighborhood guys. But when this friendship turned into something more, the mother oscillates between two states: one where she wants her daughter to have the freedom to make her choices and one where she does not want her to go further with the relationship. There are moments when she would invite his boyfriend for dinner but others when she would not let them meet. The narrator struggles on how to fight this mother, who at one moment is "grandfather" (who opposed the marriage of her mother and father) and at the other is her mother. Trishanku is a mythological character that also oscillates between heaven and earth, but could not become part of either, similar to her mother and the new generation of parents oscillating between their old and newly-realized values. There are other Trishankus: friends and lovers who would not reciprocate but won't let you away go either. This is the beauty of Maanu's writings that makes the characters lie bare and exposed, and thus sometimes too relatable.

"घर की चाहारदीवारी आदमी को सुरक्षा देती है पर साथ ही उसे एक सीमा में बाँधती भी है।स्कूल-कॉलेज जहाँ व्यक्ति के मस्तिष्क का विकास करते हैं,वहीं नियम-क़ायदे और अनुशासन के नाम पर उसके व्यक्तित्व को कुंठित भी करते हैं..बात यह है बंधु कि हर बात का विरोध उसके भीतर ही रहता है।"
मन्नू भंडारी के कहानी संग्रह 'त्रिशंकु' में दस कहानियाँ है और दसों एक-दूसरे से बिलकुल अलग..पात्र,परिस्थिति,भाव,किरदारों की सोच,सामाजिक मूल्य सब अलग..कहीं किसी में कोई समानता नज़र नहीं आतीं(एक-दो किरदारों के नाम ज़रूर अलग-अलग कहानियों में अपनी जगह बना लेते हैं,पर कुछ नाम तो सभी को चहेते होते हैं)इस कहानी संग्रह से अंदाज़ा होता है कि मन्नू भंडारी के लेखन में कितनी विविधता है।एक बात मेरे लिए आश्चर्य का विषय रही,इसमें शामिल कहानी 'अ-लगाव' उनके उपन्यास 'महाभोज' की कहानी है,शायद इसी कहानी को लिखने के बाद इसे उपन्यास का रूप मिला होगा..पता नहीं ये बात सही भी होगी या नहीं पर एक कहानी के रूप में और एक उपन्यास के रूप में थोड़ा अंतर वहाँ भी दिया गया है।

कहते हैं कि किताबें समय और दूरियों को मिटा कर पाठक को दुनिया की यात्रा करती है; ये वाक्य मन्नू जी की इस पुस्तक के लिए बिल्कुल सटीक बैठता है। एक विशेष कालखंड के मध्यमवर्गीय परिवारों की ये कहानियां इस खूबसूरती से लिखी गईं हैं कि हमे उस कालखंड में ही ले जाती हैं और किरदारों की भावनाएं पाठक के हृदय तक उतर जाती हैं। मैं उस समय पैदा भी नही हुआ था जब कि कथाएं हैं लेकिन फिर भी इन्हें पढ़ कर ऐसा लगता है जैसे कभी बहुत पहले के मेरे जीवन की ही कहनोयाँ है।

बहुत ही सुंदर और जीवंत।
