What would you be willing to sacrifice for a perfect life? We had lost everything. We were desperate and all looked to our officials to help us, to save us from ourselves. The Supremacy stepped in, seemingly coming out of nowhere. They were a government constructed task force set up to rebuild life and prosperity. They gave us homes, they gave us food, but they wanted something priceless in return. We were the beginning, the first batch. We were the testers.
Raised as a 'Military-Brat' I've had the pleasure of living in many different locals--some amazing and eye-opening, others boring and dull. Being raised in the military lifestyle gifted me the opportunity to meet people and see things I never would have otherwise.I refuse to grow up and become a boring adult. It will never happen. When not writing my stories you can probably find me advocating for Human Rights in many different venues. Some of those topics include the right to your own body, the right to love whomever you choose and the right to speak openly and freely without fear of persecution (whether that be personal or from the government). But most of all, I'm just me and it's always hard to write a bio on myself. If there's anything you'd like to know feel free to ask!
"Sometimes our best defense in survival is our ability to forget what we cannot bear to remember." "It is easy to hate the oppressor when you are the one with no liberties, but to hate who you were, what others of your kind did, took a special kind of entity." "We were polar opposite on the outside, yet mirror images within." I got sucked into this book quickly. It's dark and cruel in the beginning. Much like the main character the reader is put through such abuse. I cringed from the abuse. But it bonded me to the main character and the supporting characters as well. White does an excellent job of lacing clues into the story which kept me thinking there was something I wasn't seeing quite clearly yet, just as the main character wasn't. And just when I felt too abused and disparaged I was renewed. This story has everything and the MC, Erin, is so relatable and also she's stronger and more perfect than I could hope to be, which gave me someone to look up to, which is what I want from my heroines. Anyway, this is one of the most addictive novels I've read. Soooooo good!
Almost rated it a 1. Decided on 2 for effort and potential. Truthfully I regret the $5 spent. It's barely a short story. It's more like an early unedited rough draft. Tons of typos.
Extremely underdeveloped storyline and characters (...one day a brutalized prisoner, and literally the very next day, madly in love with her keeper and 100% trusting of him).
I only got it because of the rave reviews, but seriously, all of the 4-5 star ratings have to be the author's personal family and friends.
The human race has really screwed things up. The economy is non-existent, crime is rampant, everyone is starving, the world is on the brink... ...this is when the Supremacy steps in. They are a group with enormous power. They have fed the masses, eliminated crime, housed, clothed and provided jobs to everyone. They saved humanity – it’s just too bad the human race didn't know at the time that it meant they would become slaves with no hope of a future or freedom from their "Keepers".
It started off fantastic. The first five or so chapters were a whirlwind of info. It was very exciting, but then: - The spelling errors started to become a little more apparent. The most predominant error was with a character named Brian. The name Brian cannot be spelled b-r-a-i-n. Being not just an error but an independent word, it is noticed immediately. Since it was spelled incorrectly about half the time the name was mentioned, it totally removed me from the story (I wish the 20-something generation would either learn how to spell or at least learn that spell-check doesn’t always put in the correct word). - The conversations with the characters became a little less fluid and didn’t always make sense. - Then (and this is the worst part), it became a soap opera. Yup, this book should only be read mid-afternoon. In classic soap opera fashion, we find out the main characters are related and yet falling in love. The step-mother was really the aunt, was married to one of their fathers and now married to the other father…. Frankly, it is a family to which you cannot draw the tree. It is more of a family tumbleweed.
I would still recommend this book – it does have an interesting story. I was torn between a three and a four star rating but being a newbie author, I have to give a little additional credit. The first is the worst. It’s just too bad that the author didn’t bother to find someone to edit this book properly. Without a good editor, a potentially incredible story is only mediocre.
4 1/2 Stars: I was really excited to read this book as I love the YA Dystopian genre and the buzz I was hearing about Megan White was really promising. The Supremacy has all of the ingredients that make this genre great-a twisted dystopian society run by Supremes who are much more than they seem; a rebellious, tender hearted heroine who has much to learn about herself and her origins; a complicated romance and a carefully orchestrated ending full of surprises. I'm finding it difficult to adequately write a review because the premise is dark and original and it's impossible to put into words without major spoilers. With that said, I recommend this book to all of those readers who have loved YA dystopia, but think it's a dying genre. This book will change your mind and renew the fervour once found in books by Suzanne Collins or Veronica Roth. I love it when an indie writer shines and Megan White has a winner with The Supremacy. I can't wait for the next book.
Holy crap!! What the crap just happened to me!?! Seriously, that was awesome wrapped in more awesome. I loved it! Megan White can write! And where in the world did she come up with this dystopian, sic-fi laced gem of a story?!?! Holy crap! I loved it!!
I'm not sure how to write this review without giving away stuff, so I am going to try to be as vague as I can, while still conveying how much I loved it.
The human race has fallen apart, with crime out of control, no jobs, no money, life is at an all time low. That's when The Supremacy, a mysterious governmental group comes out of nowhere and takes control. At first things seem wonderful, they provide everything that anyone could possibly need, but slowly they begin to take more and more control, until they have absolute control. Then they start taking the teenagers, they claim that they are taking them for testing to see which career to place them in, the reality and the truth is far more horrifying though.
Which is where we meet our main character, Erin or Rin for short, a teenager, who has just been picked to go away for testing. Rin goes to load up with the others, which is when she first encounters her Keeper, Declan, a member of The Supremacy. Boarding the bus, she has an interesting and curious encounter with Declan and that's when things get all kinds of jacked up.
This is soooo hard, I do not want to ruin this book for anyone. I went in blind, with only the synopsis, and I am really glad I did. There are obvious dystopian like elements, it's horrific and scary, but there is also love, friendship, and an entire Sci-fi element that I loved. It was new, and unique - I have never seen it done like this before.
Rin is without a doubt a very cool main character. This girl. Holy crap. She's kind of amazeballs, seriously. I really liked her. Even surrounded by such complete and utter awfulness, she doesn't bend, she strives to do the right thing, even when it would be easier to look away. Then there's Declan, wow, Declan. What the frick can I say about him - I hated him, I loved him, I'm conflicted about him, but really he is quite the bad boy yummy.
This was an amazingly awesome story, my only complaint is that I felt that the ending was a little too rushed, but altogether it was an entirely new and unique story. I loved it. Need the next book! If you like the Young Adult/New Adult, Dystopian/Sci-fi genres than definitely check this one out.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Why this number of stars- The concept was well thought out, but the pacing was not the best. Few scenes were too slow, but many were too fast. Just as the reader was starting to comprehend and take in the sights, sounds, and smells they were thrust into a new surrounding to grasp. This was the only problem I had with the book. The relationships were well developed, interesting, and kept you on your toes. Most of the surroundings (after I re-read them) were detailed, descriptive, and vivid. Also, Megan White does a phenomenal job of creating her desired mood and conveying it.
Would I read the second book?- If there was one, yes, I would read the second book.
Great read! The Supremacy gives you all of the emotions: love, hate, fear, disgust, and portrays them in a unique and elaborate way. At first, I felt there was too MUCH description. Example: At one point the main character notices another cell mate's hair color and explains in detail about the color, curl, and motion of said hair(I'll have to update once I find the section). It isn't relevant later on, so it wasn't needed by me. But as the story progressed, the description weren't as wordy, so I was able to connect a little better with her. I can't wait to read the next one.
This is a dystopian future like none other. Led by a different species that no one knows exists. Tons of twists and turns. I read this book in one day. COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! This is a must read! Great characters and a different type of story. You get a really good picture of what Erin, the main character, is seeing and dealing with. Very well written.
INITIAL THOUGHTS I really liked the sound of the blurb. The question right at the beginning "What would you be willing to sacrifice for a perfect life? certainly caught my attention. I do enjoy reading about all the different dystopic societies that authors create.
MY THOUGHTS I purchased this one from Amazon UK, as I was hunting online for more dystopian books to get lined up to read. The cover features a possibly sinister looking figure in a long black cloak. The building on the cover reminds me of an old factory or of pictures I have seen of old workhouse buildings. So the cover definitely gives you a spooky kind of feeling, makes the hairs on the back of your neck. The sky on the cover also looks overcast and oppressive, which adds to setting the atmosphere of the book well. So would the cover make me pick it up from a bookstore shelf? I would if it was on a dystopian shelf. Though I'd be worried that this great book may get overlooked, which is a shame. The book is set in dystopian/post apocalyptic world. Society has literally fallen apart, food is scarce, criminals run riot, citizens are struggling to stay alive. The Supremacy arrive and send in their Keepers to uphold new rules and regulations that the Supremacy have come up with to rescue everyone from their current state. Initially life seems great, the Keepers make sure everyone has food, a job and healthcare but life is about to take a sinister turn for Erin. Erin is the main female character in the book. Erin lost her mother at a young age, and her father remarries a woman called Corina, who seems to hate Erin and this feeling only increases when Erin's dad dies whilst protesting against the Supremacy, the Keepers and their laws. Corina believes in everything the Supremacy and Keepers say and do. Corina believes her husband a fool for speaking out against them and being executed for doing so. Naturally her feelings toward Erin just deteriorate even more as she believes she is stuck taking care of her. Erin has tried to stay out of the step mother and classes her only family to be Trent her little brother, the product of her father and Corina's relationship. Erin and her father have always talked about her mother and that is probably why Corina resents Erin so much. The only other true friend whom Erin treats more like family is John. They have grown up together and survived together during the hardships of the new government. Food etc is scarce, the Keeper's give just enough to stave off starvation but not enough to be strong and healthy. As if the citizens were stronger and healthier they may rebel. Anyone that commits a crime or speaks out against the Keepers is either killed on the spot or is subjected to a slow long painful death of starvation. Erin witnessed her fist public execution at the age of 7 so life under the Keepers is a harsh and at times cruel world. The Keepers are wanting to bring in some new rules which say once a child reaches the age of 5 years old that they are taken away to be tested to determine what their career path will be. Before this new initiative can be implemented it is decided that all the tests will first be tested out on older children. They decide to target teenagers. Orders are given from the government/ head of the Keepers that all teenagers are to report to the main square and they are to be taken away, tested and "trained". Obviously as her father was a defector against the government, or Keepers as they are called, Erin is highly suspicious. It turns out she has every right to feel this way, as there is no choice about going to be tested. Once all the teens are in the square they are told to board the transport bus to take them to their new home. Erin notices the icy blue stare that one of the Keepers has, he seems to have singled her out for "special treatment" and she wonders if that is a good of bad thing. Upon arrival at the new testing establishment all the teenagers are fitted with a tracking device. So even if they could escape over the high walls and fences, they wouldn't get far due to the tracking device. The teenagers are then split into smaller groups and held in cold, dark, damp cells. I don't want to go into much more detail as I think it would spoil the way the plot unfurls as you read it. The conditions the teens are kept in are even harsher, with restricted access to water and food than before. The Keepers are basically "testing" different things on them. It seems the teenagers have something quite valuable that the Keepers want. The numbers in Erin's cell get rapidly dwindle. The initial "we are all in this together attitude soon changes to everyone just looking out for themselves. The only person to be taken out of the cell and then returned is Erin. I liked that even in the depths of despair Erin thought about the other teens around her and tried to help despite the punishment she would have to endure when the Keepers found out. Erin makes friends with a younger child that has somehow ended up in the same cell as her. Erin cannot resist comforting the child even though those around her insist doing so will get them all into to trouble. Erin becomes so weak and is almost beginning to think she is going to die when a very unlikely rescuer removes her from the cell. She is told she holds the very key within her that can bring down the Keepers and the government. Erin is eager to bring down the government and put an end to their harsh rules and regulations, but can she trust the Keeper with the icy blue eyes? Just when Erin feels like she has a role to play and is beginning to think everything that has happened to her has been for a reason and a greater good her world is once again turned upside down. Is this the final straw for her fragile mind and body? So did I enjoy the book? Yes, I was certainly drawn in and hooked on the plot. There's plenty of twists, turns things you don't expect. Would I recommend the book? Yes, its an interesting read. Would I want to read another book in this series? There is so much more to learn about the Keepers, and we need to know if Erin is successful or even survives. So yes please! Would I want to read other books written by this author? The descriptions within the book are detailed, and the plot is engrossing. It's really "different". It's not a "normal dystopian/post apocalyptic" read. Some parts of the book reminded me a little of Emily McKays's The Farm.
First I want to thank the author for providing me with a a copy of her book.
I don't know how to rate this book, I'm confused. How do rate a book that is not badly written good even, because some passages show the writers talent, but the story had some many plot holes.
The world has been broken down, the economy collapsed, people have died and the people still living are suffering from hunger. The Supremacy steps in and starts helping out people, now they got home, food and school starts again. All is not roses with the Supremacy, because now they decide everything, there are camera's everywhere. There's a curfew and your weapons and opinion are not allowed anymore. Freedom is no more.
Erin lives with her stepmother Corina who hates her and she has a little brother. Her best friend John and her a chosen to be testers. ( at some point I started doubting myself is John chosen to be a tester or not or was he just saying goodbye? and did he get got up in this mess)
Now Erin is living like cattle, medical procedures are being done, kids disappear and die. There's a keeper Declan that seems to be protecting her, she gets a small friend named Faith whom she's trying to protect.
I was not a fan of the the love building. The story had to many plots in one and all of them together made the book less believable and at times you get that WTF feeling.
I don't know what to think off Declan he lied so many times.
Erin was very feisty in the beginning but at the end she was only focusing on her love life.
2.5 stars the story needs more character development and the plot needs to be worked out. The writing was good.
7-23-2014 I changed my rating for 3.5 stars. This review kept bugging me. I think the writer is talented some scenes were excellent, especially the ones about the way people treat cattle.

There is one thing that kept going through my mind as I read the first half of this If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. A group of aliens came to earth and helped the people the people, gave them jobs, homes, but how were they able to do that. I could say but that would be giving the plot away. I will say I have been enjoying this, somewhat, so far, though not the violent parts, which wasn't too gory. What most of these aliens eat to survive does make me queasy just thinking about it.
there is deceit upon deceit but not all for evil intent.
I have to say that I understand completely the feeling of betrayal the heroine felt. She had to go through the pain of loss not once but three times, abandoned by her dad and left with that evil bitch of a stepmother. Why was she allowed to suffer so much pain at the hands of the aliens, I'm sure her dad must have had a safe place setup long before her number was called. why couldn't she be taken to safety the same way John was. Her was living in safety with a new family, a new daughter.
The heroine not only suffered mental pain but physical pain as well. The hero claimed he loved her but lied to her from day one.
Some might say she is acting childish, but she has every right to, she was used and betrayed in more ways than one. I'm sure the author will make the heroine quickly forgive everyone and even put some blame on herself, but it's going to take alot for me to give a damn about what happens to the hero , her dad and john. As of right now if the hero or her dad truly dies I wouldn't care. I don't care if hero and heroine have a HEA ending.
Frankly I don't even like her sister right now. The pain the heroine could have prevented if her dad had acted sooner.
This book captured my interest from basically page one. And the twists and turns were kind of amazing. Like, totally not what I expected amazing. I feel like after reading a ton of YA Dystopia, truly unexpected plot twists are rare finds for me lately, but Megan White managed to twist the hell out of that plot, in a really good way. I can't say much without giving stuff away, but wow. I was seriously blown away by some of the twists she created, and I really loved the main character Erin (Rin).
Basically, there was only one thing keeping me from giving this a complete five stars: The Love Interest. I will try to be vague, but this is just one of those things that didn't make sense to me. I kind of saw it coming, but I assumed it would take much longer, for a lot of reasons that you need to read the book to understand. But for it all to happen so quickly, without a real, gripping reason for it to simply didn't jibe with me.
Overall, this was an awesome story, one that I cannot wait to get more of! I will be waiting rather impatiently for the sequel.
WTF did I just read? You know when you read one of those books and once it ends you need to take time to cope with what your mind just absorbed? Book-recovery should be an acceptable reason to call out of work. We need to work on that. This book was extremely graphic in the way it was written. It pulls you in from the first page and makes you feel like you are in this dark sinister world that the author has created. Very George Orwell(ie)
Then you get to the Farm scenes.
not to mention the dream scenes.
I've heard rumors that this will be a series but what I find refreshing is that even though there will be more The Supremacy had a beginning, middle and end. A lot of the times in a series we get left hanging and I-fucking-hate-that-shit. If I invest my time and money in a book it better have some closure. This book did. There's still more to be done but I wasn't left with book-balls.
NOTE: I received this book from a goodreads giveaway. All thoughts on the book are my own.
Actual Rating- 3.5 stars
This book is about a girl named Erin, an orphan who is being raised by her stepmother who resents having to raise her. The beginning of the book introduces us to The Supremacy, a group of a higher class citizens who have a tyrannical rule over the rest of the population. Erin is taken at the beginning of the book under the guise that she will be tested, trained, and sorted into a zone by the supremacy along with other children her age. A type of testing is taking place, but it is more horrific than anyone could have imagined....
I very much enjoyed the concept of this book. This book needed better editing because some of the dialogue is confusing and there are spelling mistakes throughout the book. The idea behind the story is great and could be made into several books that I most likely would want to read.
This book is not normally something I would read, but I was curious about it. Well, I am so glad I gave it a chance! This book really opens your eyes and puts so many things in life in perspective for you. There are so many things that happened, that I did not see coming!
This story paints us a picture on what it would be like if the roles were reversed and we were being sought after as food, or as science experiments. This story started out showing us just who Erin is and how much she will fight for what she believes in. No matter who is in her way, or trying to break her down. She stands her ground through the whole book and never once gives in like so many others have. She will not fall subject to The Supremacy, matter of fact, she will do everything she can to work her way in and take it down for her father's memory!!
Wow. I don't even know where to start with this book. Anything that could be said will be a spoiler. There was no work-up in this book. From the first page you are thrust into this totalitarian nightmare that only got worse. The author did an amazing job at painting the horrific picture of the life these people were forced to live, not to mention the heinous conditions the Testers lived in, for as long as they were allowed to live.
Without meaning to offend, I have read thousands of Indie books and they all feel 'indie', this one if I didn't know was written by an independent author, I'd have never guessed. This is something different and far from cookie-cutter. This author wasn't afraid to bring up topics that are often taboo to most. A political novel that portrays the topics at hand in a thought provoking and thrilling manner.
Deserves a 5 but I'm a stickler when it comes to certain things.
The Supremacy was very intelligently written with numerous political undertones. Was very surprised a newbie author was willing to delve into so many hot-button issues that we are faced with in this day and age.
One of which is an extremely graphic vaccine (for the PC folks I'll go ahead and add: "immunization")scene.
This is a novel/series that will grab the public by the throat and force them to pay attention.
This book is a bit of a change in genre for me. I have read all of the author's other books and enjoyed each of them but this book is different. Way different! The writing is stronger, and I feel that Ms. White has hit her niche with this book. I was immediately drawn into the book and shockingly creeped out (in a good way!) on occasion. I don't want to give away any plot details because there are a few surprises but I can say that I am looking forward to what happens next. Twists and turns that I was not expecting....excellent start to hopefully a new series.
This was a great book! Once I started reading, I had a really hard time putting it down. And was kicking myself for not having read it sooner.
The plot was incredible and left my emotions all over the place. In a world gone bad and only one hope for survival...what would you choose?? This is the aftermath of those choices...
Megan has a wonderful writing style that keeps your interest, never a dull moment. Her characters were believable and pulled you right into their story. There were twists you didn't see coming, emotions you didn't see coming...it was just a great book to read and I recommend giving it a try!
I'm giving this a strong 4 star especially for a debut author. There's some harsh reviews on here. I loved this book. I look forward to picking up the next one to see his story.
This is my genre so I ate this story up. It's YA so it's easily suitable for young adult to any age.
I love the whole idea of the "Keepers" it was quite fast paced. Never once was I bored with it and read it in one sitting. It could use a good editor but other than that I saw no real problems. It kept you interested and while a tad predictable I still enjoyed it. Would for sure recommend to others. Would write more but it's a tad hard on a Fire, lol.
This is one of those books where if you write a synopsis you will ruin the book and seeing how I hate reading 'spoilers' when I check out a book's GR page I will just say that if you enjoy reading books about totalitarian societies/ dystopian novels, this is for you. Had a very 'holocaust' feel to it so this is why I will label it to having a similar feel/read to Animal Farm/ 1984/ The Giver and other works of the like.
I have been following this chick since Parish Secrets and what I think I like even more than her book(s) is how real she is. She's one of those rare authors that is actually attainable. I have been fans of other authors for years and the most I get back from them is a form letter saying "thanks". I have written Megan for help on my own projects and I have always gotten a response. -Fan For Life
I loved this book!!! A world where Keepers watch your every move. Told you what to wear, when to talk, how much to eat. Worst yet, they start taking the children away to go to "boarding school" and that's when the real fear kicks in. Why are they doing this and to what end? The reason makes your skin crawl and makes taking down the Supremacy the number one priority for the entire human race. I won this book (free) through Goodreads and there's no doubt I will be reading more from Megan White!
Megan white Supremacy book1:I absolutely loved this book. From page one it was non stop action. It had me sad, mad, upset, shocked and happy all through the book.Erin the main character is awesome she is tough and kind with a heart of a lion:-) love her.All the characters are great but you never know the true roll they play in this book. There was a whole lot of oh wow didn't see that coming. Can you say cliffhanger!I'm left with thought of come on I need to know what's goi to happen next!!!!:-)
ohmygosh! Sooooooo scary! The things of nightmares! I really didn't see where else this book could go but utter heartbreak and death. But alas, I was wrong. This book is simply amazing! The first half had my stomach in knots and I was so sad, but I knew, I just knew there had to be more. Oh and there was so much more! So many ohmygosh moments!! I was shouting out at the book lol, my family may think I'm crazy. I CAN'T WAIT for the next books!! Hurry Megan White!
I was blown away by this novel. From the very first page you are thrown into this dark world of pain and loss. The pictures this author painted in the story will have you on the edge of your seat as you root for not only Erin, but Declan as well. Two broken souls that are fighting for the same goal, only one of them just doesn't know it yet.
Plot twists abound in this story of oppression and redemption. Well written, with great characters, and an intriguing premise. Supremacy was a little heavy on the romance for me, but that didn't detract from the plot. I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to more from the author, and more in the series.
Holy WOW! This book was incredible! If you like dystopian novels this is the king. It's really hard to go into the plot. There are so many twists and turns. One word, exciting! If you have this on your to read list, move it up in the rankings. This is so GREAT!
I was really into this until the development of the love story. LAME. Some things, like the death of your best friend, you don't just get over. You don't fall madly in love with the guy who murdered your best friend and tortured you and your fellow inmates.
