They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But sometimes, under extreme circumstances, it's exactly that which kills you that makes you stronger. And faster. And a member to a new, elite race of zombies.
Armed with a current address for his biological grandfather and a slightly unusual, yet loyal best friend, Doyle Hawthorne sets out to discover the truth about his past. But answers don't come easily, and the closer Doyle arrives to his destination, the more confusing things become. Disturbing alterations to his physical appearance as well as to his personality flicker on and off as Doyle searches for a logical explanation.
Despite the increasing severity of these uncontrolled flare-ups, Doyle is determined to keep his first date with Addy - a beautiful, young woman he has met upon his arrival into town. After narrowly subduing his raging impulses, Doyle quickly decides not even death itself can keep him from her. Unfortunately, he is about to test that theory.
Once initiated, nothing can alter the process of shading - the term given to the three distinct phases of becoming a higher classification of zombie, commonly referred to as "royals". Doyle must learn to control his tendency toward violence as well as his newfound royal powers if there is any chance of protecting those he loves from a mad scientist, the government, the colony of royals, and most importantly... himself.

So I won this on booklikes and this was definitely an entertaining book plus it was my first zombie novel which I proved to really like. The opening gets right into the action and immediately avoids cliches as we discover Doyle is adopted and he finds a picture which turns out to be his grandparents, Eva and William Clark. There's no mystery behind who his parents really are which is great as usually that's dragged out and Doyle tries to find his grandfather, William. Another cliche is swiftly dodged here as well as they locate where he is straight away.Doyle and Chuck then decide to find him and the story starts off there.
The switch between reality and Doyle's nightmares is gripping and tense at points as I could never guess it wasn't real. Everyone seemed to fancy Doyle which was kinda annoying but I liked the fact girls were actually interested in Chuck as well. There's an unreal twist during their stay in the hotel which completely draws you in and constantly forces you to ask questions until you uncover what's going on. It's near the hotel that Doyle meets Addy who I liked at the start and Kai, Chuck's date who is hilarious.
The romance is incredibly awkward, I mean Doyle and Addy just met and they act as if they've been going out for months. There was no build up to their relationship which in turn made the romance awkward to digest as it was just too quick and I didn't really care what happened to it. Addy also slightly began to get on my nerves, she just came off as annoying and needy and always seemed to be crying although she worked as a nurse and should have been use to tense situations.Although, that's probably me being harsh. However, it was great to discover there was no love triangle but the end suggested one and perhaps irritable scenes to occur in the next book? Hopefully not.
There was a lovely twist with Addy along with a lot of the minor characters like Jenny which made me exceptionally curious about her and eager to pick up the next book.A lot of the minor characters turned into something significant and I enjoyed their presence like Stephen. Chuck was by far my favourite character as he was a fantastic friend with funny comments throughout the story.
Overall, this is a beautifully woven story with an engrossing element of zombies and other species. It's a fun book at times but also tense, avoiding cliches and striking you with many unexpected reveals. The only minor fault was the romance but it doesn't impact the story that much.I would still definitely recommend this novel especially to anyone interested in zombies. I was incredibly glad to have won this and the cover was beautiful too, I will be seeking out the next novel!
I don't usually read zombie books but this one definitely filled all zombie needs.
Doyle is a normal college student that one day discovers that is biological granpa is alive and that something awful could have happened to him. So he sets off with his BFF Chuck in a long roadtrip, but in the way he starts to change, he feels different... he is becoming something very unhuman.
Of course, the are zombies that all that want is BRRRAAAAIIINS but Doyle is becoming something superior, a royal zombie. A zombie that has more or less control of himself and uses his brain instead of wanting to eat brains.
Best part of the book is the relationship between Doyle and Chuck. We are not only told the are great friends but also shown. Their bromance is great and felt real. They also have male voices, they notice things but never in great details and don't exactly talk about their feelings all the time.
My only complain is the love part. Addy was a great love interest; a nurse, older and not a virgin. And everything was great for a while, Doyle tried to keep is changes a secret while dating and getting to know Addy but eventually everything ended up being a case of instalove. Pretty sure they had only seen each other three separate times and already they were claiming to love each other.
Thankfully, the adventure and the mystery of what's happening are more important than love so this book stands as an awesome zombie book.
Doyle Hawthorne sets out to discover family secrets and ends up uncovering more than he bargained for. Of Royal Descent caught me from the first page, and refused to let go. Action, humor, romance, and zombies. What more could a girl ask for? Shane’s take on the mythology is original, her characters are engaging, and writing superb. There’s also an interesting darkness to Of Royal Descent—a fright factor rarely found in the paranormal genre. Doyle makes for an excellent MC. He’s intelligent, level-headed, and manages to deal with the craziness thrown his way, while Chuck, his best friend and sidekick, had me laughing out loud. I can’t wait to dive into the next installment, Of Royal Treason. Highly recommended for NA Paranormal lovers or anyone craving a new, unique zombie world.
After the discovery of a family secret Doyle Hawthorne, and his best friend Chuck Johnson set out on a road trip to locate Doyle's birth grandfather. But what starts out as a harmless excursion ends up as something much more unsettling. Doyle and Chuck are heading toward a colony of zombies! And it's all part of a larger plan.
Before all hell breaks loose, Doyle meets Addy at a roadside diner, and is immediately drawn to her. The attraction is mutual. So, despite his not-so-grand entrance, she agrees to go out with him. Doyle questions why his senses are getting sharper, but doesn't dare reveal his dreams to Addy... at least, not yet.
Across town at a government facility Edgar Bradbury's sinister plans are coming to fruition. And while Doyle's dreams are slowly slipping into the waking world, lines are being crossed, and other secrets are revealed... secrets that are more deeply rooted in Doyle's history than he could have ever imagined. He will need to brace himself, if he is to make it out alive... or dead.
This book started off with plenty of suspense, which I thoroughly enjoyed! But the pace was a bit inconsistent. And after it slowed to explain some technical aspects of the story, it never quite recovered its full excitement. Further, I had a tough time believing in the fast and hard way Doyle and Addy fell for each other. Still, it was a fun read, with interesting characters, and some genuinely frightening moments!

“I received this book for free from the authors (Booklikes Gieaways) in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.”
I really liked the meaning behind the cover;how it reflecte the story; truly do.
This is my first zombie novel; I have never been interested in reading about the living dead ;they kind of creep me out *shudder*.
But let me get one thing straight, this is defenetly not your tipycal zombie apocalypse book, it has a whole other meaning to it.
The author has done an amazing work, there was Humour, action, mystery and most of all a lot of sexiness in it *o* !, one thing I extremly loved about this one is "Chuck & Kai" they are by far one of y favorite couple... So excited about the next book in the serie I want to read more about those two.
& of course it has it ups and downs, sometimes slow and other times unnecessary discription (like the morning routine), but in general I enjoyed reading the book very much.
Of Royal Descent is the first book in The Doyle Hawthorne Series. It's a zombie book with a quite original take on the subject, though it can be classified as paranormal romance. We all know that I don't read too much of that genre and that when I do, beware, because bad reviews are coming. This is not the case, I enjoyed this book and I'm going to tell you why I think it stands out against the others.
Doyle Hawthorne is college student with adoptive parents. One day, while helping his father with some boxes full of old stuff, he discovers cryptic letters written by his biological grandfather. All of them were addressed to his grandmother and they seem to conceal vital information about a traumatic event in the past. With a little help from his best friend, Chuck, Doyle discovers his grandfather is alive and take on a journey to visit him. As soon as they approach their destination, weird things start happening to Doyle and his body.
This book is all about that transformation. I really enjoyed the technical details Ember Shane developed as an explanation for this "disease" Doyle is experiencing. The process is quite unique and interesting, though one part of it reminded me a bit of the book Partials by Dan Wells. , though I think Of Royal Descent used that aspect in a better way.
Now, I'm going to list a few things that I didn't like. The first thing is that the love interest is a nurse at the same facility Doyle can be found. It seemed to convenient for the development of the story. The romance was a little rushed but there are certain technicalities related to the "disease" aforementioned for it to be that way.
At the end there are a few twist plots that I liked. For example, and . I really think these twists set a good course for the next book and I'm very excited to continue reading about this story.
Another thing that bothered me were a few typos, but nothing major. It's evident that sometimes the auto-correction function of the word processor made a little bit of mayhem.
A detail I loved was that many of the names of the characters are formed by joining a name or surname from two famous author. For example, Edgar Bradbury and Wells Stevenson.
So, it's a fast-paced and light read with lots of blood and a little bit of romance. A great take on the zombie world.
This book is about a guy named Doyle who after he discovers something interesting about his biological grandfather, he goes on a road trip with his best friend Chuck in an effort to discover more. During their journey they meet two girls, Addy and Kai, and a whirlwind romance is formed. After being led into a trap by a mad scientist and discovering he is to die and become a royal Doyle is ready to say goodbye to everything he holds dear. Doyle eventually escapes the clutches of the mad scientist but it turns into a true fight for his freedom.
First of all, endless drama. I LOVED all the drama in this book, it kept you second guessing everything and kept you on your toes the entire journey. Another aspect of this book I enjoyed were the characters. I think they were all created and written into the story extremely well. They were each unique and interesting in there own ways. The strong bonds and amazing romance's had me sitting on the edge of my seat until the very end because they were so intriguing.
Now the whole concept of this book first had me stuck, because I didn't understand the concept, but all the way through the book you get to learn more about the stories and the characters that makes everything create sense. Its written so well and the world Ember has created is one I would love to read more about in the future for I adored this book utterly and completely.
I recommend this book to you if your a lover of romance, zombies, fantasy or science-fiction. Now being a lover of all those things and being how incredible this book was I highly suggest you read it! Well done Ember on such an amazing job well done on a terrific book.
Royal Zombies??? I was unsure what this book would have in store for me, but I was hooked from the very first page. First of all, I love when the protagonist is adopted. I am not sure why, I just love when it's not perfect family, perfect life kind of situations. Also, the dynamic between Doyle and best friend Chuck is fantastic. They've got each other's back no matter what. Doyle has to go through a lot in this first book, and a lot of it is hard to digest, but it's so very intriguing that the science of it doesn't become off putting at all. And the writing was just so great, that I found myself double checking that this was indeed Miss Shane's first novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into paranormal, paranormal-romance, sci-fi, or just really likes zombies. I'm very anxious for book 2 as well, so consider this my plea to the author to give me a release date! :)
A friend gave me this to read. I asked her what it was about. She said, "Sex-crazed zombies". My immediate reaction?
Without including spoilers, I'll just say that I wish there had been more of those scenes! Aside from that, I loved the amount of humor in this book. Some of Chuck and Doyle's conversations are hilarious. Their double date with Addy and Kai is definitely one of my favorite scenes.
I will forewarn you that it does end on a cliffhanger, but if that doesn't bother you, this book is recommended as an entertaining and quick read.
Awesome read! The author definitely has captured my attention in her deliciously intriguing first book. I really did have a hard time putting it down. Between the banter of humor between Chuck and Doyle and the love for something Doyle can no longer have. It's all just too much! With a story line that's just slightly out of the norm..you quickly become encapsulated in this scifi romance with a childhood friendship that can't be broken? Well i guess we'll all just have to wait for the next installment of this masterminded series!
This is an ARC book that I received from goodreads. Occasionally the book could be a little bit slow with a lot of details that were unnecessary, such as what specific order the characters took care of their hygiene needs in the morning. But the story? The story was awesome. A new twist on zombies that I have never read before or seen before. I found myself wondering exactly what was going to happen throughout most of the story, And I was quite put out when it ended. A kind of cliffhanger that definitely has you wanting to read the next book.
yes.. This is a bad review and I hate giving bad reviews. But I believe in honest reviews also. This book has promise. In some areas, this book would be given a four star review, but in light of other aspects, even a two star review is generous. This book still needs some serious polishing and improvement.
The book is fast paced and almost immediately a conflict is introduced. And this is a good thing. It wastes no time in getting the reader's attention.
There is a lot of confusion between the tenses and even homonyms. That makes a HUGE impact on the quality of the book. This book is told in the past tense, so past perfect is recommended. Here are SOME examples of these errors of homonyms and tense errors underlined. Page 70... Where the flashing when I first came in? I hadn't noticed. Page 105... He hadn't drug me that far. Page 243... He shone the red dot as far down the hallway as it could go before it was extinguished by the darkness. Page 331... So I had instructed him he needed to cover me in case I became overran with guards.
As for the characters... I couldn't get a good read on them as characters. Being static or dynamic, I have no clue. Addy and Doyle were unpredictable, which makes me think it might have been the author's intention?
All I know is that Addy is a nurse who just so happens to work in the clinic that Doyle gets held in against his will. Wait.. no that's not right, but I'll get to that later. The only characters I really absolutely loved was Chuck, Doyle's friend, and Kai, Addy's friend. Both of those characters serve as a great comic relief. And their back and forth banter and arguing and crazy monkey lust for each other is humorous. Those characters really did make me LAUGH OUT LOUD. Great job, Ember :)
And Doyle's parents being totally badass government agents was quite the plot twist. I like plot twists, but this kind of plot twist was just, in my opinion, completely aimless. If a back story or a little character building on Doyle's past and his foster parents was added, giving some hints or implications that only the reader would know something is fishy, then that plot twist would have been better. Or a back story depicting his foster parents as the most normal parents ever, then the plot twist would have been a complete u-turn, and that would have been an entertaining twist.
Now the romance in the book... it was all too rushed. It was jarring even, as though I got hit by a giant semi truck on the Interstate cruising at full speed. The romance wasn't cheesy, but it was just so sudden that I could NOT understand how they could EVER possibly care for each other as much as they do for the life of me. It didn't even warm my heart like other books do.There was mention of a pheromone bond, but I would assume that would be between royal-royal relationships, not royal-human, because as far as I know, humans don't bond in a physical level. So if the author wants the romance rushed, then the insta-love needs to be heavily emphasized because of the combination of the pheromone bond and because it's a fated love.
So. What I meant by Doyle not being held against his will is exactly that. It WAS Doyle's will. Doyle didn't just sign his own death certificate, but he CRAFTED IT. At no point whatsoever did Bradbury specify or even IMPLY that Doyle could never leave the hospital nor that he was forced to undergo testing. When Chuck entered the clinic and refused to leave, Doyle didn't want Chuck to see him wither away as he dies, so DOYLE struck up a deal to make sure Chuck doesn't see him in exchange that Doyle will go along willingly with any tests they want to perform. Therefore Doyle's torment is his own fault.
There are a few other things that grind my gears, but I can deal with them.
SO overall the book to me was sloppy, and rushed as though the author wanted to get the book done and over with, and to me, the plot wasn't that strong either. But to be fair as well, this was definitely not one of the worst books I've read. Like I said before, it shows promise, it just needs to be polished.
Ember Shane's creative and descriptive writing is commendable. I love how she can paint a picture and describe the scene. She is a perfect example of "showing" me the story rather than "telling" me. And even though I couldn't get a great read on the characters, I know this book is mainly character oriented than plot oriented. The characters were what drove me to finish reading the novel when the plot seemed trite. Chuck and Kai were my favorite characters.
So, after a few days of pondering this book over (yes, I was conflicted), I decided I can't sugarcoat anything because this is some crucial feedback that I think should be considered in Ember Shane's next books. But I don't mean to come off as rude either. Ember Shane shows promise as an author.
So would I read the sequel? Yes. I have to know what will happen.
But would I buy it? No. The quality of the book was poor and it was not worth 1.99 due to the quality. But if the key aspects I mentioned in this review were to be focused on, fixed, and improved, then I would definitely say it would even be worth paying 3.99 for 390 pages. The concept of the book is interesting and a love between a Royal and human can work. It's not too taboo considering all these romances with vampires, werewolves, warlocks and witches, aliens, and God knows what else, I'm sure that a romance with a Royal (high class zombie) can work out as well.
Lamentably, I have to give this book One star. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but I always leave honest reviews. Some tough love on my part should help Ember on what to take a second glance on this book, and any future books she may write and publish.
One star.

Loving this! I had actually won books 1 & 2 through the New Adult scavenger hunt and wanted to wait until book 3 was out to start. Then I never got around to ordering it lol. However the other day I needed to spend another $5 for that free shipping and saw book 3 still waiting on my wish list. So I ordered it and started this. So the story is really really original. Like functioning zombies that can make babies that will one day also turn into functioning zombies. There's so many twists and turns that I really didn't know what would be happening next. Kinda annoyed with Doyle's adopted parents because they could have avoided a lot just by being honest with him. Like what did they think would happen when they didn't tell him?? Also really annoyed that no one has told him what happened to his birth mom. Also what about his grandmother? Maybe I missed that part. Can't wait to see what happens next.
When I was a kid, I always knew I was different. I could feel something burning down deep inside. I always knew I was different. I could feel some burning down deep inside. I always imagined I would grow up to be a special, maybe become the President, maybe a rocket scientist. What I did not expect to become was a leader of an uprising zombie army.
And yet , here I was…

My thoughts:
I didn’t know how well I would like a book where the main character was a zombie, but I liked this, a lot. It wasn’t a heavy, life altering read. It was just plain FUN! The writing is solid, there are no major errors in grammar or spelling. This is in the New Adult category, and it reads like it belongs there. This is written from in first person from Doyle’s perspective. I said recently that I am not a fan of stories written in first person format, but this worked for me. I didn’t get tired of read the word I over and over, or get so annoyed with Doyle that I couldn’t stand him by the end of the book. You get insight into the other characters of the story through dialogue and actions, and the characters by the end of the story are well developed and left me feeling like I had gotten to really know them. They are young college aged students, and act like it.
This is a trilogy. There was romance in this, but not as much as I thought there would be. I do expect that part of the story to evolve as the rest of the books. This book focused mostly on the transition Doyle went through as he became a Royal Zombie, and it was an interesting transformation I was expecting something similar to the Twilight series. While I do think readers of that series would enjoy this, it felt a little older. There were scenes that reminded me of The Vampire Diaries, the T.V, series, not the books.

Fans of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, The Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout, Dante Walker series by Victoria Scott, etc.
An Excerpt I Enjoyed:
(Jenny is Doyle’s adoptive sister)
I closed the door, shutting Jenny out, and stepped into the tub. Vaguely, I realized I hadn’t showered since my “bed baths” with Addy. I sniffed my armpit. My entire face puckered instantly. Zombie B.O. was definitely the worst. I set the shower to hot and lathered twice.
When I had finished and was fully dressed once again, I opened the door and Jenny shook her head at me. “You didn’t brush your teeth,” she scolded.
Brush my teeth? Was she Kidding? I was pretty sure zombies didn’t have dental plans. It wasn’t like I was going to get a cavity. But I wasn’t able to communicate my thoughts on the subject effectively yet, so I rolled my eyes and reached for the toothbrush on the sink. I squeezed a line of toothpaste on top and after two passes along the front of my teeth, I realized the bristles had all been sheared off. I glared at Jenny.
She covered a smile and said, “Well there’s no reason you can’t at least do a shot of mouthwash.”
Doyle Hawthorne is a 21-year-old college student who sets out with his best friend Chuck Johnson to search for his biological grandfather. Along the way they uncover more then they ever could have bargained for and realize a darker entity lives among them.
Of Royal Descent is full of action, deceit, love, bravery, humour, and the best of all: Zombies. What more could you ask for? This is the perfect combination of everything I love in a novel. The author knew what she was doing when writing this, no doubt.
The writing flows well and kept me immersed in the story as it was so easy to fall into. The way Zombies are described, their origin, and what they are to everyone else around them is so intriguing and not something I've read before. Especially how they act and the process of turning into one once the disease has been activated.
Now, characters. I love them all. Well, okay maybe not Bradbury. He's horrible to everyone and he takes darkness to a whole new level. But other then him they are all easy to love. I especially love Doyle and Chuck's friendship. They have such a great bond, and Chuck stays by Doyle's side the entire time even when Doyle was an ass and it's just great. I just really love how bonded they are, how much they care. They aren't afraid to tell each other they care. In fact, all of the characters are ones with large hearts (with the exception of Bradbury, MZs [mindless zombies], and soldiers under Bradbury's orders). They all help in some way and you can tell they only want what's best for the people around them.
Of Royal Descent is now one of my favourite books, and I hope to get my hands on the second book soon. So I recommend this to everyone. As long as you don't mind violence. Or slightly sexual scenes (it's never explicit or too bad). But yes, please read Of Royal Descent. I'm sure most of you will love it!
>This is the first book in the Doyle Hawthorne series and ends in a cliffhanger.
>Doyle and his friend, Chuck are normal college students. When they decide to go on a road trip to visit Doyle's grandfather all hell breaks loose. Doyle is adopted and finds evidence of a living grandfather, so off he goes with his best bud. This is where the story gets interesting. Doyle parents turn into government ninjas, Doyle has dreams that tell him what to do and Doyle himself is feeling "different" lately. He craves meat and has a hard time controlling his temper.
> When Doyle finds out he has a zombie gene, the story takes an interesting approach. A plausible scientific explanation is used to make the whole outrageous story seem believable. We witness Doyle go through the 3 shades of zombie-ism, while learning to control his wanting to eat everyone. It's both funny and sad. His girlfriend, Addy, is one of the main reasons he is able to control his urges.
>While zombies seem very unromantic, the romance and action make this story very interesting. This is a breath of fresh air in a paranormal genre filled with werewolves and vampires.
>I am a reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock.
First of, I won this book in a giveaway here on booklikes. And I'm so glad I did, if I hadn't seen it there, I probably would have never picked up the book, simply because I never felt THAT interested in zombies, cause you know, slow, creeping dudes who look like they are falling apart. Nope, not for me.
BUT THIS BOOK. There are some parts in there that reflect how I feel and thought about zombies but there is also so much more, there is so much action and greateness. I love it. It all gets explained really well, so that you can easily understand without having a science degree.
Apart from the plot and all, I really love the relationships in this books. Especially the platonic ones, Doyle and his parents, Doyle and Chuck. I hope we get more from Doyle and Jenny in the next book. I also really liked Chuck and Kai. I still have my issues and problems with how fast things went between Doyle and Addy. I mean, there is this whole bond thing, which I totally understand. But...oh well. I didn't hate it, though.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and think the writing was really great. I really wanna pick up the next one, cause I have that really huge question that I can't get out of my head and that I need to have answered really fast-
I was approached by the author to review this book a couple of months ago. I have never read a book about zombies but the story caught my eye. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was blown away by this story. I loved it!!
Without including any spoilers I thought this was a creative and unique story. The author created a new species of zombies and I thought she did a great job of developing her new world without feeling overwhelmed with too much detail. Since they are zombies there are some violent scenes but I think they weren’t graphic enough to discourage young readers from this book.
I loved the characters, especially Doyle and Chuck! These guys are best friends and there were some great scenes that made me laugh. This story has a mix of comedy, romance and action that kept me entertained. The action scenes were so well written I can visualize every detail and I absolutely would love to see this book made into a movie!!!
I was really impressed with the writing and I found it hard to believe this was the author’s first book. I can’t wait to read the next book!! I recommend this to all paranormal/fantasy fans!!
This is NOT your usual zombie story--and I loved that about this book. Instead of being infected, college student Doyal finds out being a zombie is in his genes. On a quest to meet his biological grandfather, Doyal and his best friend, Chuck take off on a road trip. What was meant as a quick and harmless getaway soon becomes full of strange symptoms for Doyal. Nightmares, new food cravings, two girls, a diner and more have his head spinning. I love the bond these two guys share as best friends. Chuck is the guy everyone wants to be friends with! Wealthy, funny, a bit cocky and oh so loyal--I loved him! I also loved the relationship (for better terms) he and Kai share, it's a story of when a playboy meets Emo girl and they find themselves questioning what they got themselves into. I would have loved to see more of a build up between Doyal and Addie. They fell helplessly in love, yet they had met only twice for a short amount of time. I'm super excited so see where the author takes their journey in the next book. I give this book 4 stars--It had a great and unique story line that I really enjoyed. The story gives you family, brotherhood, love, zombies and a crazy scientist!
Of Royal Descent, by Ember Shane, is my one hundred and thirty fifth book that I have received and read from Goodreads. This is my first zombie novel that I have read. I really enjoyed reading this book. The cover of this book was really great. Doyle Hawthorne discovers a family secret and he and his best friend Chuck set out for a road trip to locate Doyle's birth grandfather, and ends up uncovering more than what they bargain for. This book Of Royal Descent has you intrigued right from the beginning first few pages. I think the author did a great job of taking the plot and keep building, making it hard to put this book down. Doyle and his best friend Chuck have a great friendship, almost like twin brothers. Check character has you laughing with his sense of humor. I will not go into more details in this book. I do not want to spoil a really great read. This book is a great book from teenagers thru adults to read. I would like to thank the author for signing my book, and taking the time to jot down a note of thanks. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Of Royal Desent (The Doyle Hawthorne Series Book 1) by Amber Shane
Of Royal Desent was a fantastic read! I loved this story, it was about a young man named Doyle Hawthorne who learned he was more than a man when he was born into Royal Desent. The story was fast paced and drew me in with each chapter delving deeper and deeper into the plot. I felt excited as I read through the book waiting for the outcome of many things. My favorite characters are Doyle and his best friend Chuck. There journey to find Doyles real grandpa is a blast. The ending leaves you with much to ponder and I am looking forward to reading book 2 in The Doyle Hawthorne Series, Of High Treason by Ember Shane. I enjoyed the writing style of Author Ember Shane, never leaving you with a dull moment throughout the book.
I give Of Royal Desent (The Doyle Hawthorne Series Book 1) by Ember Shane 5 stars for its entertaining, unique and original Zombie story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Paranormal Fiction and a great Zombie story.
Let me start this off my saying that I usually refuse to read any book with the word zombie in it. When I saw that this book had zombies in it, I started to set it aside. I am so glad that I did not. I am actually looking forward to reading the next installment. If you are looking for blood, gore, and mindless chaos, this is not the book for you. It is about finding out your family has secrets, finding your true love, and protecting those that you love, no matter the cost. If you read this book, I think you will fall in love with Doyle. Not because of his looks or actions, but because he is willing to risk it all to protect his family. He has the strength to endure the pain of shading, and the will to learn control so that he does not have to be separated from Abby. Sure he has his douche bag moments, but hey, he is turning into a zombie. Of Royal Descent by Ember Shane was a pleasant surprise that I am glad I did not pass on. I give it 4****.
Of Royal Descent is a good, fast read. The characters and situations are well developed and easily likeable. I really enjoyed the new take on zombies. It is so hard to come up with something original in that area, but Ms. Shane has done it. Doyle has no idea that he is a zombie royal by blood and only finds out when he and his friend Chuck go in search of his biological family. On his journey, he meets Addy, the only woman that he has been attracted to in longer than he cares to admit. He bonds with her almost immediately and together they must deal with the changes occurring to Doyle while under the thumb of a sadistic scientist. The only thing I wished had more elaboration was the relationship between Doyle and Addy. I felt that she was very quick to accept the situation and for whatever reason, that didn’t sit well with me. Overall, this was a great read and I would definitely recommend it to YA readers who love zombies. 4 stars
I gave this book 4 stars because in the first 5 chapters I really wasn't impressed. But after that the story took off and I will definitely plan to read of high treason age but comes out.
Doyle and Chuck are supposed to be two 21 year old males but the banter between them isn't always believable in accordance to "2 21-year old males". Between the dialogue and slow un-necessary details the first 5 chapters nearly had me put the book down but honestly I'm glad i didn't.
The story definitely picks up and the author finds her voice and becomes better aquatinted with her characters.
A good read for people who like different takes on zombies and zombie stories.
I can't wait to read the next book. The first chapter was already much better than the beginning of of royal descent.
Hungry, Angry, Horny, repeat...Doyle Hawthorne doesn't understand why his adoptive parents are making such a big deal out of him making a road trip with his best friend since childhood, Chuck, to possibly meet his biological grandfather. It's not like he's going to be treated like some zombie lab rat in a diabolical and sinister way by a corrupt Kris Kringle....right? The grammar usage in this book is fantastic, especially during the first half of the book when Doyle is Doyle. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments for me in this book. Doyle has that way about him at 21 that most mothers wish they could instill in their boys..superb book Ember Shane! I received this book for free in return for an honest review.
This was my introduction to Ember Shane. I am not crazy about Zombies. I am not crazy about YA. But I could not stop reading this book. I loved all the characters, the story line, and the possibilities. Doyle and Chuck made me laugh more times than I could count and the relationship between Doyle and Abby is very sweet. I will grant you that it is slow taking off and there are a few too many details for my tastes (hence the 4 1/2 star review), but it is awesome once it gets going. Congratulations Ember Shane, you hooked me, and I am certain that others will read it and become hooked too!! Can't wait for the next one!!
It's great story, I thought it will be a good subject for a movie, it's a different take on having a zombie as your lead character. It's good cause it is different, it's something new to add in a collection of zombie novels. It's like zombie up another notch ;) It's cool!
Who would have though having a zombie lurking around able to live and somehow think like a living human I love this book.. looking forward to the next one.
It's awesome. We'll written. It is exciting. A combination of adventure and love story. I love it so much. Can't wait for the second book. Ember Shane you are awesome. Reading this book makes me feel that I am actually seeing it, it was describe vividly that you can actually visualize the scenes. It's like watching a movie.
It took me a while to pick up this book but I am extremely glad that I did. From the moment I started reading this book it was hard to put down. I finished the first book with a heavy heart, knowing that I would have to wait for the sequel. I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
