Kazune Kawahara (河原和音) made her manga debut at age 18 with Kare no Ichiban Sukina Hito (His Most Favorite Person). Also, while thinking of her manga, she often spaces out and brings grocery baskets home. Adores her nieces.
The best and most adorable shoujo manga (for girls, a romance), featuring Takeo, a huge guy (6'7", 265 pounds) in love with Yamato. Improbable love interest, with his size, but he's just so nice. This is how Takeo got Yamato to begin baking him sweets, his protecting her from some jerk on a train.
So, are now there cracks in the edifice of love, built over three volumes made of desserts and flowers? Well, if Takeo is nice to Yamato, isn't he nice to everyone, creating the same effect for other girls? Yep. Suna’s sister Ai struggles with her affections of Takeo, and a cute girl on the track team he coaches. This is the jealousy volume, though Takeo doesn't really see anyone but Yamato, he is interested only in her. But she is still nervous. She knows what can happen.
Maybe not quite 5 stars, for the first time, but it is still fun. Reading it with the 11 year old girl in this house. Also, reading for summer comics class with focus on girls.
I'm so happy to be re-reading this series nearly a decade after my first go-through. It is holding up so well and still gets me all emotional.
I'm a staunch member of team Ai, and she is featured this time during a group excursion to an amusement park that is definitely not Tokyo Disneyland.
Regardless of who he loves, though, Takeo Goda is king!
ORIGINAL REVIEW - October 3, 2016
This is the best shojo manga being published right now. Maybe ever. I squee like a girl and laugh out loud as I read it. Takeo rules! He's the Casper the Friendly Ghost of great big guys. When you see a giant bear racing toward you, you don't stop to ask if he's a friendly bear, you just run. And Takeo cleverly twists that reaction to his advantage this volume.
I love this story so much. It's everything I've ever wanted from a shoujo manga.
You don't have to wait for the end for the MC's to actually get together, or wait like 10 vol's just to see some progress. It's all there, right out of the gate.
This manga also takes all those normal shoujo manga cliché and pretty much destroys them in the funniest way possible. The stupid misunderstands that smother shoujo manga are quickly resolved thanks to the Suna. Speaking of Suna, he is probably one of the best characters in this story. He has Takeo's back, always. He even steps in to carry a girl for Takeo, knowing that said girl has a crush. No BS here.
I highly recommend this manga, this story. It's that near perfect love story that we've all been waiting for. Funny, sweet, and the nice guy finally doesn't finish last.
Takeo, the dude whose love story is the subject of this manga is such well-developed and sympathetic character that the reader just can't help but cheer for him. This engaging experience makes it an enjoyable read.
This volume really shaped up to be something I wasn't expecting!
It's interesting reading this series and it being from the perspective of a guy because sometimes I think girls can worry too much (including myself because I *definitely* know I do LOL). I would say this statement is more about the second half than the first because seeing Yamato's worries/concerns when this wannabe love rival comes on page, Yamato is worried but she really doesn't NEED to be. The happiness that shines on Takeo's face every time he sees or hears from Yamato is like nothing else when to compared to how he interacts with other people, and this new girl truly doesn't stand a chance. Time and time again, we see from Takeo's internal dialogue that he DEEPLY loves Yamato and only has eyes for her. I think Yamato may know this to some degree, but I think her fears are blinding out that "truth" so it's harder for her to really know/remember that. I 100% get it though! When your fears start making you worry, it's hard to see what's in front of you, but if she could just see through those worries, then she would really know that she has nothing to worry about and those fears would evaporate.
Maybe I didn't word that well, but as a result of what I shared above, I found Yamato really relatable in this volume. I also admired Takeo all the more because he is such a great guy who has a HUGE heart for helping others and being there for them, but his heart is even bigger for Yamato and his love for her. We see that really shine throughout these chapters and hope everything will be cleared up for Yamato in the next one. <3
I won't sound like a broken record, but I continue to love love love Suna, especially with his expressions! He really just gets thrown into these situations and just goes along with it without complaint. He's amazing!
One thing that was interesting in this volume is seeing how popular Takeo REALLY is. I guess because Takeo has always been so adamant that he is NOT popular, I just sort of felt he wasn't. (That sounds rude, but I don't mean it that way!) Sunakawa is the one who is popular because Takeo reminds the reader of that often, but it's nice seeing that change of perspective with this volume in that Takeo is popular too (just maybe a little different than Suna is).
Now if that one girl could kindly leave, then things would be even better...
I went to my local anime con last month and I got into a discussion after a josei panel with the panelist about why I still read shojo manga, and I said “Because I just need something fluffy that just makes me happy.” Not that josei can’t be fluffy or happy either, but there’s just something about shojo that makes me want to roll around squeeing.
And My Love Story!! is just the pure epitome of this. Yes, it’s about these two pure teenagers who absolutely adore one another and there’s really nothing that’s standing in their way as a couple, but it’s just so adorable and shut up give me more. (I’ve only watched the first episode of the anime so far, but OMG PERFECTION.)
We do get more into the atypical shojo romance tropes that the first volume touched on, and I do like that it’s Takeo who gets the brunt of the girls falling all over him. I actually thought it was sweet that Sunakawa’s older sister has a crush on Takeo, but she makes the decision to accept that Takeo and Yamato are together. (Not that Ai is completely over Takeo, but she keeps her distance and decides to try to move on.) I was afraid that the storyline with Shuei was gonna to go down the more typically path of “Oh, but she actually really does like Takeo!” (and I don’t think that this is going to stay platonic and friendly in the future), but I did like that it didn’t end that way. I really like that Takeo is all for encouraging everyone around them and willing to help them do their best, even if it occasionally means pushing them too much. (Also I can’t decide which panel was funnier in that story: Takeo doing the Hawkeye Initiative pose during the relay race, or Yamato’s sheer look of joy when she tries to get the GIANT cell phone charm plushie. “Rinko, no.” Oh my god these two. I need this bit animated so much.)
I also thought that the bonus story was adorably sweet, especially with the reveal at the end. Yes, it could be seen as too coincidental or too sappy, but it’s just so sweet and scared but being brave baby Takeo is precious.
This is slowly overtaking Kimi ni Todoke as my sweetly saccharine “I’M GONNA VOMIT RAINBOWS AND SPARKLES” fluffy shojo manga, because it just makes me so happy whenever there’s a new volume out. It’s adorable and funny, and I just get the biggest smile on my face whenever I’m reading it.
It's fine, but somehow I'm not liking it as much as I did when I started this series. I laughed so much reading the first volume, but the humour seems to be getting less and less each time.
This is an adorable manga and such a simple pleasure to read. Takeo Goda is a 6'7" giant lovable teddy bear who is rather tongue-tied around girls, even his swooning girlfriend Yamato. This volume has two stories that show us other girls are interested in Takeo, even though he is unaware of it and thinks he is not very popular. The first half has his best friend's sister trying to deal with her feelings that she has always harboured for Takeo while a boy from college has followed her home to try and win her over. The second-half concerns Takeo taking up training a girl in his class to help her prepare for a race in a school sports event which has her falling head over heels for him. Takeo is clueless, but the girl's intentions don't get past Yamato. The story deals with real teen relationship issues, a little overdramatic as we know to expect from shoujo manga, but these characters are good-hearted and kind-natured dealing with their feelings in ways that are unselfish. A feel-good sweet romance.
In this volume, we get more of Ai- Suna's older sister- who is being pushed by a boy from her college who likes her to tell Takeo how she feels, in the hope she'll move on from him. There's also a new girl about who has a crush on Takeo, pushing Yamato to get a bit more.... possessive, shall we say? Meanwhile Suna's there the whole time seeing everything and saying nothing, because there's way too much OTT drama going on at this point.
I love this series! Genuinely! It makes me so happy every time I read a volume, and I'm so glad I started it. There's also an adorable story at the end of Takeo and Suna as kids, and how Takeo once.... saved a GHOST?! I loved the ending of that little story, fate really does work in mysterious ways!
Book four and still really cute! It's super interesting to start to see girls falling for Takeo and seeing Suna's quiet reaction to everything ridiculous that he does is beyond amusing. Like always, great art and amusing story. :)
Still not sure what bugged me so much about volume 3, but volume 4 returns the series to my full enjoyment. This time Kawahara is dealing with the dude with a crush on strong female character tries to tell her what to do trope. Aruko also manages to sexualize Takoe to great comedic effect.
Re-read 2021: This was just tons and tons of fun. Though I wasn't 100% of the whole pushing Suna's sister to say I love you or have that guy say it for her if she didn't do it. I mean, really, I get the idea, you are in love with her and want her to get over her first love, but this is just not the way. Thankfully things are solved My Love Story way and everything turned happy again. There are fun dates, some confusion (but I loved Rinko's reaction and also the reaction of her friends, she was really sizing up the competition there), cute charms, and so much more. They are adorable, though I hope they kiss soon! Bonusstory????? LOVE IT! That was adorable! I guess it was destiny for them to meet!
Not only did this volume keep up with the fluff and cuteness, but it also started to include a bit of drama! Unrequited crushes are a biiiiittttccccchhhhhh.
And imagine that your unrequited crush is TAKEO. LMAO.
also, we're introduced to two new characters and I LOOOOOVVVEEEED both of them! Oda is a funny scheming dude, I hope he gets to be with Ai in the end <3 And Saijo... *sigh*
I can't count how many times I've been in Saijo's position. I hope she gets a happy ending, regardless.
And from here on out, let's see how Yamato's jealousy will develop!
This volume has been the best in the series so far! It felt the most realistic to life and Takeo, I think has gotten less—I guess the word is—“overprotective” towards Yamato and afraid that everything he does is wrong.
The best part of this manga was the little story at the end when Takeo and Suna were kids and Takeo actually met Yamato then, but didn’t know it! That was so cute and it made me happy. I honestly had no idea that the said to be “ghost” was her. That was amazing. Takeo promised to save her again and he did in the bus! It was like they were meant to be together! Soulmates!!!
Still find this story to be kinda meh. I want to like it so much, but there's almost no conflict or interesting plot lines. Just the happy perfectness of our main couple. I'm hoping something happens soon💕
