11 [Birii Batto 11]

Rate this book
Semplicemente imperdibile!

"We can't rewrite the past, but we can correct the future."

We carry on, exploring Zōfū's past. We come to learn more about the association between dour Cpt. Finney and pseudo-Chuck.

As for the odd zombie-like villagers: H.C. Duvivier forced the villagers to dig up the whole village, looking for the original bat scroll...

The plot thickens, as we are now made to visit Spanish Basque Country, following the early events in the life of Francis Xavier! Until now, I didn't realize he was from the city of Javier or Xavier... And its castle is the one displayed in the RTS game Stronghold 2, with acute realism at that! You can imagine my shock seeing one of my favourite castles to defend in the game... as if it had been teleported into this manga!

Naoki Urasawa!

It's remarkable: eleven volumes in I feel my bearings in this story are as unsteady as they were when I'd only just finished the first volume, and yet the incomprehension doesn't seem to interfere with the appeal. It's a lot of fun to be this lost.

Things get built up and established only for the rug to be pulled right away. But the volumes and volumes of build-up that the scroll (or any of the other plot elements) received was not wasted. The chapter in which the scroll is unraveled is both unassuming and thrilling. Neither the contents nor the consequences were what I, for one, was expecting. And it all prompts a chapter about a young cave-venturer I had better not name which is one of my favorite chapters of the whole series so far.

Come to think of it, the opening chapter of the volume is a stunner, too.

Killing the main protagonist when you are halfway through the plot is the sign of either the worst writer or a really talented writer. I know Urasawa falls in the latter, so I'm going to let this slide and see where the story heads.
