Demigods & Magicians #2

The Staff of Serapis

Rate this book
In this adventure, Annabeth encounters more oddities in the subway than usual, including a two-headed monster and a younger blond girl who reminds her a little of herself. This is the story fans have asked for, in which Annabeth Chase teams up with Sadie Kane. The demigod daughter of Athena and the young magician from Brooklyn House take on a larger-than-life foe from the ancient world. Perhaps even more disturbing than the power-hungry god they encounter is the revelation that he is being controlled by someone—someone all too familiar to Sadie.

As a special bonus, the first chapter of THE BLOOD OF OLYMPUS, the final book in the Heroes of Olympus series, is included.

Notes: Novella length, gains story-strength from higher-value foes, no monster mash, a godly clash, more serious toe-to-toe.

I enjoyed this even much more than I did the first book. I love that it’s about Sadie and Annabeth, two of my favorite heroines in Uncle Ricky’s epic adventure stories. I love how the story opened up with a bang and ended up with the same and as usual, Uncle Ricky’s imaginative and hilarious descriptions kept me entertained the entire reading time. I was almost clapping when my most awaited moment arrived- when the villainous god finally said “GAH!” and “RAR!”

P.S. Happy early birthday, Sandra!. Sorry I couldn't read a full length novel for you. Life is taking its toll on my reading. Lol. I hope this counts and I hope you have the best day on your birthday. <3

”Intelligence won wars, not brute force”.

After Reading

First of all. VERY FIRST OF ALL. I wanna just shout out to the world that MY ONLY TWO PREDICTIONS about this two short stories HAVE COME TRUE!! These two are-

1. I knew, I FREAKING KNEW that

2. My assumption was that

*sniffle* I feel so Proud to know Uncle Rick That well!

Also, please don't kill me when I say that the story wasn't intriguing to me at first. Like we're all pretty used to weird monsters right? But after meeting Sadie Kane, and ALL that funny-horrendous-awesome-terrifying Adventure, it deserves SO much more than mere 5 stars!! So just like all Uncle Rick fans, I wanna thank him SO SO much for this AMAZING story!

Oh what else? I also wanna smack him upside the head for

But apart from ALL that, I'm pretty sure Rick would be sitting there proudly ALL like
description

I applause you dude! Especially for his Brilliant Knowledge he has stored in some secret part of his brain. For example- Serapis. From which part of this entire cosmos did Rick plucked him out and pasted in his story? Gosh, seriously, where does Rick makes such a detailed research?? I SO wanna know!

All right, fangirl mode off. To the readers of both the PJO, HoO and Kane Chronicles series, it might be a Deja Vu a little to get reminded of ALL those adventures the demigods and magicians did back in their own series. It was definitely a plus point of this book. And of course Rick's way of describing things is flawless! . I could actually go on praising my favorite writer in the world again and again, but let's come back to the story :P.
Annabeth Chase and Sadie Kane, both blonde, both with certain attitudes (in a good way), and confident. What a great pair! Certainly better than Carter-Percy pair, when the boys just decided to throw rage over each other for no apparent reason (psshh...typical boys).
The best part of the story was that it was so Awe-inspiring.

So Excited to know more! A few more crossovers would certainly do, like-
Nico and Anubis/Walt
Khufu and Grover
Coach Hedge and Bes (DIIIEEE!!!)
Bast and...Frank?
Felix and Leo!
Leo and ZIA!
Jason and..Shu..i guess. Or that Russian dude..Leonid!

Okay I shouldn't try more, but these would be great. Or even greater- A whole new series!. I'm really Excited for a series of books that unfolds ALL the Greco-Egyptian period and its impact on the heroes of the generation.

Aaaannnd AT LAST, a few OMG moments for me to freak out with the fangirls out there. I hope they sympathize well enough with me to read my further freak-out rantings :). These were my very first reactions, and they may be a bit too much, but if you've read both the series, you'll understand it well, because it was THE Annabeth Chase on one side and THE Sadie Kane on another!! :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Cover release
o.O Is that what I think it is?? IS THIS ANNABETH?!?! Wow, we've Never seen Annabeth in a book cover before!!! OH MY GOSH these Two girls look more like Long-lost-sisters here :DDD.
Wait, why is there hieroglyphs 'around' Annabeth?? Or is it aimed on the two-face-one-butt monster? And what is that animal Behind Sadie?? A dog with snake tail? And OMG is the Fight gonna happen IN the METRO?!?! Or would they just MEET and Greet in there?? Gosh, SO MUCH TO KNOW!!!!!!
When the announcement just came up
When i heard about it, i first screamed for like 5 minutes (a fangirl has her own ways to satisfy herself :D) !! I mean come on guys the meeting of Annabeth Chase and Sadie Kane would be 10 times as dangerous as Percy and Carter Meeting right?
Re-read 11/12/20
I'll just rephrase what I said in my update and the previous review for the first short story in this series, and add a few thoughts:
•it should have been Sadie and Percy instead of Sadie and Annabeth. Annabeth and Carter would have a better dynamic, and same with Sadie and Percy
• I have never not loved a Rick Riordan book. This was not an exception. I love being back in their world every time.
• my memory on the Egyptian mythology is spotty due to it being a few years since I've read The Kane Chronichals
• I don't like Sadie. She stuck up, arrogant, and would have probably bullied most of us in middle school. I've always preferred Carter, and her contsantly putting him down is annoying.
• Annabeth is a queen. Percabeth is goals.
• I'm going to read the last book soon, and I'm curious to see how it ends as it's been a while since I've read this too
Ho amato il crossover tra Annabeth e Sadie, l'incontro tra le due mitologie.
Questa novella consiglio di leggerla dopo la trilogia di The Kane Chronicles e la saga di Eroi dell'Olimpo.
Excellent!
This was even better than the first story! I’m really loving this crossover! The first one was Percy Jackson and Carter Kane… this one was Annabeth Chase and Sadie Kane! Fun! I can’t wait to start the next story… later today in fact! Five stars!
UPDATE 6/25/2014
Well, I read this quite a while ago so this review is VERY late. Sorry. I've been busy and honestly hadn't remembered to do this.
In part because this is late, and in part because the book was good but not amazing, I don't have much to say. I definitely suggest these short stories, as I suggest all of Rick Riordan's stuff (I believe he's secretly a writing god). This doesn't disappoint and will leave you wondering were this mini series is going. ENJOY!
UPDATE 4/15/2014
COVER!!!!!!! Yes...
And it's so pretty too <3.<3
I'm kind of surprised that these short story covers are better (personal opinion, of course) then many of the main book's covers. I wonder if they're all by the same artist?
If he's gotten a new artist... Well this makes me feel guilty, but I'd be so happy. The old guy just screwed up some of the character portraits so much...
OMG. OMG. OMG.
:O Why didn't I know about this sooner? D': STUPID INTERNET, NOT ALLOWING ME ON GOODREADS ENOUGH ANYMORE!
1. *Hugs Rick Riordan* Or, you know, the air.
2. *Goes off to cry for a little while*
3. *Comes back and wonders how I'm still so affected by these books and short stories years after I started reading the series* Answer: Everything about the Percy Jackson books are perfection <3
I'm just going to sit here and wallow in agony until the book comes out. Would anyone like to join me? *Holds out a blue cupcake*
SOMETHING UP THERE EXISTS!!!!
SADIE KANE IS BACK! AND WITH Annabeth. This is gonna be so awesome, if Annabeth doesn't murder Sadie before the book starts. And well, who's gonna blame her? Carter had years to learn how to tolerate Sadie, and poor Annabeth is being dropped into it at the whims and wishes of Riordan and fans respectively. But then she's not Annabeth just like that. And she suffers Seaweed Brain. So there.
"First, I find out my brother and I are descended from the pharaohs and have magic powers. All right. No problem. Then I find out my dead father has merged his soul with Osiris and Why not? Then my uncle takes over the House of Life and oversees hundreds of magicians around the world. Then my boyfriend turns out to be a hybrid magician boy/immortal god of funerals. And all the while I’m thinking, Of course! Keep calm and carry on! I’ve adjusted! And then you come along on a random Thursday, la-di-da, and say, Oh, by the way, Egyptian gods are just one small part of the cosmic absurdity. We’ve also got the Greeks to worry about! Hooray!"
Wow. I think I found my new favorite teen badass! Hellloooo there, Sadie Kane! I like you!
"No one is like me," Sadie agreed. "My amazingness is unique."
Oh yes, you are amazingly unique and uniquely amazing, Sadie! *cue cartoon heart eyes*
I enjoyed this short story of Sadie and Annabeth far more than Carter and Percy's adventure against that crocodile thingy. I mean, these girls kicckkkk asssss! Whooooo!
Meh. This was sort of disappointing. The story felt a little too long, though I loved how quickly Saide and Annabeth became friends. It was a fun read, but not really important to either plot line.
THE STAFF OF SERAPIS, the second short story in a three-volume collection, focuses on two females—Annabeth Chase from the PJ series and Sadie Kane from the Kane Chronicles—and merges both Greek and Egyptian mythology.
Using their wits and combing their knowledge (both mortal and mythical) Chase and Kane meet in a way similar to how Jackson met Carter: fighting a creature. But whereas the first short story revealed that the Son of Sobek was a “normal” crocodile wearing a magical necklace, Annabeth and Sadie have to contend with a two-headed (and later a three-headed) Cerberus-like mammal.
I enjoyed this short story and learning how both characters interacted with one another, successfully vanquishing their foe by using their combined strengths. This is a great story for PJ and Kane fans.
The Son of Sobek was better (and it is not because I am madly in love with Percy), but this short story definitely sets up the stage for the official Percy Jackson/Kane Chronicles crossover.
I feel bad for Percy though. I mean, the poor kid had to go through the Battle of the Titans, fight Gaea and right afterwards, he has to go stop an epic Greek and Egyptian throwdown without so much as a coffee break.
But on the bright side, more Percy!
The movies are digitized crap, but Logan Lerman is hot.
Holy Hera and Hades. Greek + Egyptian = Recipe for awesome kickassness!!
The crossover series is happening...oh yeah, you bet it is.
You can bet five quid and a plate of Sadie's gran's burnt scones, it is.
And Setne, that little evil filthy cockroach!! That scrawny old codger with the loincloth and Elvis hair!! Okay, I plagiarised... sheesh, sorry.
But earnestly, this looks sooo good.
And this isn't fair, Riordan(oh right, none of his books have ever been fair) We wait a year for this, and you give us a measly 50 page novella, set after ''a few weeks'' I can't believe this.
THIS CROSS OVER BETTER BE GOOD.OR ELSE.
Or else, I can't really do anything and of course, you will tear my heart by those stupid cliffhangers of yours. And if there is another literal cliffhanger, I'm telling you...
Gah! I can't do anything. Just try not to rip my heart out, all right? Please. I'm a bit weary with all the patched and sewn hearts and tachycardiac fits.
Seriously.
And don't bring in another bunch of newbies. Fangirling can't be distributed evenly amongst a dozen OTPs, you know.
Sigh. Readers might as well write a manual for you to ignore.
I demand the crossover series. And I demand it FAST. **slams fist** **ouch**
“That’s okay,” Annabeth said. “How are you at bluffing, lying, and trash-talking?”
Sadie raised an eyebrow. “I’ve been told those are my most attractive qualities.”
“Excellent,” Annabeth said. “Then it’s time I taught you some Greek.”
Ok so two strong, god-spitting badass blonde women fighting side to side... what a wonderful world we are living in.
It's Annabeth's POV. I could almost stop right there, because Annabeth. But since I'm here, I'll add that Sadie seems to have matured an incredible amount since the end of The Serpent's Shadow. But she really kind of had to for this story to work. She would have looked even more vapid than she sometimes did in her own series. But this version of Sadie is actually a match for Annabeth. Which makes the realization that this is probably going to turn into a series of short stories with a connected storyline exciting. I look forward to seeing who will meet next.
Why 5 stars you ask?
Simple. Annabeth's pov.
More, you ask?
Alright. Annabeth and Sadie made a surprisingly entertaining duo. Mother-daughter reconciliation. Annabeth panicking about her being currently unknowlegeable (that's a first, I must say). And well, all the action.
Rick Riordon HAS to write a series combining Greek and Egyptian mythology. Seriously, he already started a whole new era with this "Crown of Ptolemy" thing. I gotta have more. This is epic, okay. How old is Sadie again? I thought she was at least 14 or something...but it mentioned in here "no older than 13" what? my memory sucks.
“Oh, I believe you. It’s too ridiculous not to be true. It’s just that each time my world gets stranger, I think: Right. We’re at maximum oddness now. At least I know the full extent of it. First, I find out my brother and I are descended from the pharaohs and have magic powers. All right. No problem. Then I find out my dead father has merged his soul with Osiris and become the lord of the dead. Brilliant! Why not? Then my uncle takes over the House of Life and oversees hundreds of magicians around the world. Then my boyfriend turns out to be a hybrid magician boy/immortal god of funerals. And all the while I’m thinking, Of course! Keep calm and carry on! I’ve adjusted! And then you come along on a random Thursday, la-di-da, and say, Oh, by the way, Egyptian gods are just one small part of the cosmic absurdity. We’ve also got the Greeks to worry about! Hooray!”
“That’s okay,’ Annabeth said. ‘How are you at bluffing, lying and trash-talking?’
Sadie raised an eyebrow. ‘I’ve been told those are my most attractive qualities.”
“Forge ahead,’ Sadie said. ‘Think on my feet. When necessary, blast enemies into teeny-tiny bits.”
The second part of Demigods and Magicians: Three Stories from the World of Percy Jackson and the Kane Chronicles is done!! Still brings me a lot of nostalgie and wanta me to re read the The Red Pyramid series and The Lightning Thief all over again!!
The only thing I have to criticize about this second short story was Annabeth's attitude. I didn't feel like she was Athena's daughter at all. I know that encountering magicians and Egyptian magic is something new for her, but Percy handled it better.
