A second-grade girl has a father who has HIV and she is worried how her classmates will react. This book teaches about how adults live with HIV. I would use this book to teach my students healthy living habits such as washing their hands.
I had high hopes for this book. I was so looking forward to a book that dealt with the reality of having a parent with HIV, both the medical facts and the emotional ones. This one dealt factually and compassionately with the medical facts, explaining in simple terms how HIV is spread, how it hurts you, and basic ways to stay healthy. And that’s great. But it didn’t at all address how to deal with the emotional realities of having a parent with HIV. I get that the main character is 7 years old, but even 7 year olds have deep feelings and I think this book blew past those.
