Raised by Father Fujimoto, a famous exorcist, Rin Okumura never knew his real father. One day a fateful argument with Father Fujimoto forces Rin to face a terrible truth—the blood of the demon lord Satan runs in Rin’s veins! Rin swears to defeat Satan, but doing that means entering the mysterious True Cross Academy and becoming an exorcist himself. Can Rin fight demons and keep his infernal bloodline a secret? It won't be easy, especially when drawing his father's sword releases the demonic power within him!
One year later: I revisited this recently, and found a number of volumes had been added. It appears I'd read up to Vol. 9 before, and thought it all merely OK; starting in Vol. 10 an arresting new character was added, Lewin Light aka Lightning, who boosted the story up a whole level (and stole every scene he was in), and a new plot arc, ditto. (It actually takes till Vol. 16 for Light to get full traction.) For Vols. 10 - 19, which is what I've read of the new material so far, I'd call it a four-plus stars rating -- four stars for the plot developments, five stars for Lightning, and his gonzo mentor relationship with Bon. Now I'm waiting eagerly for Vol. 20.
The anime parts paths from the manga before Vol. 10, I believe; I'm not at all sure I care to watch it past that point, though perhaps the wiki will fill in for me, satisfying my curiosity without burning my time.
Last year:
I tried this one in part to sample my public library's lending system for e-manga, which turns out to be brilliant. The art looks excellent on my Android tablet, very clear and readable. And being able to swap out volumes near-instantly at one in the morning without leaving my chair is dangerous addictive.
Storyline on this one was something of the same-old-same-old -- why are all these male protagonists always 15? I suspect an industry-wide editorial focus-group -- and always struggling with some magically disguised version of their new adolescent testosterone-driven aggressive impulses? (But not the sexual ones, except with even more disguised artistic tongs or as barely mentioned side issues.) But I suppose that question answers itself, when looking at the original target audience and market, which is not me.
Young man raised by weird magical mentor-figure who of course dies discovers he is the son of Satan (and I must say, some very strange things happen to European religious mythologies when they are run through Japanese filters informed by more Asian models) and in a proper fit of adolescent rebellion sets out to become an exorcist and destroy demons. Goes to magic school, finds his own Scooby Gang, hijinks ensue. I have persevered up through Vol. 9 so far.
Of course Mom is dead, when is she not? -- to answer my own question Kyo Kara Maoh, where she is delightfully alive and embarrassing to our hero. So is another mother of some major side characters. No wonder I liked that one, in retrospect.
Series was recced to me by someone who thought Mephisto might interest me as similar to other characters that have intrigued me in the past, but so far, sadly, he's just an empty suit. I'm not sure how much farther to slog in hopes for some deeper character development there -- I don't think this series is doing "deep".
Some nice bits of relieving humor along the way. I did kinda like the idea of kraken-sushi.
Another good start for a shounen manga! I had seen the first episode of the anime already so I knew what to expect; although I was kind of surprised the beginning in the manga wasn't as developed as it was in the anime, you get a much better understanding of why Rin fights with the boys and starts the whole mess in the anime than in here.
Definitely a lot crammed into this first volume, but thanks to reading Bakuman I'm wondering if that's because this was originally a one-shot that got turned into a series and they just used a bunch of the same material for this volume. That's complete speculation on my part though.
There's an interesting dynamic between the two brothers, but I felt that Yukio was a lot colder towards Rin than was warranted, especially since Rin always protected his younger brother. Well, there are always reasons for these things, and a few of them popped up in the end, but still, keeping Yukio in the dark for so long about so much wasn't right. I'm also really interested to hear more about their mother. THAT should be an interesting story.
Fun fact: I have the same birthday as the two twin main characters ^_^
I've got the next few books on hold and I can't wait to continue. Finally got some good manga, and a lot of volumes too, to spend some time marathoning. Now I just need the laundry and dishes to magically do themselves ...
When i first watched the anime a few years back i was like "Rin is my baby". Now that i am reading the manga a few years later than that i am like "Rin is my baby". Honestly, he is one of the most likeable characters. Everybody loves Rin <3 The manga is amazing, it is fun and emotional and if you like manga in general definitely give it a try. *Ao no Exorcist will have its second anime season this winter and i am so fucking excited*
This is the first time reading a manga from right to left, and it felt really strange. Blue Exorcist follows Rin who has been raised by Father Fujimoto (famous exorcist) but Rin himself has never known about his true heritage. After a nasty encounter gone wrong, Rin learns that he is connected to Satan and plans to destroy him. The only way to do this is enter an academy and train to become a exorcist. He has to keep secrets close or risk death. Even though I did enjoy most of the illustrations, I struggled to connect fully with the characters. At this moment in time, I will try different manga series to see which one I enjoy more. It is also a little brutal.
I had heard of Blue exorcist for a while before picking it up for myself from my local W.H.Smith. I only picked it up because I thought it would give me something to read that afternoon, but boy, am I glad I bought it. I am hooked! I've never been up to date with a Manga series; I purchased the other 3 that week, and have asked for the 5th for Christmas, which was released last week.
I think the art style of Blue exorcist is lovely. I love how the characters look their age. I think there's nothing worse than a character looking older or younger than their supposed to. It doesn't quite make them as believable. It is very detailed, but sketchy. I think a sketch can hold a lot of character that a polished and finished image doesn't always hold. It's a lovely unique art style.
During this volume you are introduced to Rin Okumura, Father Shiro Fujimoto, Yukio Okumura, Satan, Mephisto Pheles, Shiemi Moriyama. What I did enjoy is that there are character profiles of the characters at the back of the book, a long with a log of each Demon you encountered in the volume, and their levels.
This was a fantastic start to a series, the story very intriguing and gripping. Everything about this was so good, the writing, art, plot, and characters. The writing and art for so well together and really matched the characters and how they were presented as. The plot was so good, there was so much action with a bit of world building with it. And the characters they were all great, my favorite is Rin, I love him. His energy and characterization was fantastic, and I loved seeing his relationships with his brother and his father figure. Overall, I was hooked from the start and I am looking forward to continuing this series.
This is a very nice graphic novel. Never have I expected I would be interested in reading graphic novel. Oh well, gonna search for the second book once I'm finish with the third graphic novel I bought together with this one.
This was great! I watched the anime a few years back and I'm pleased to say that the humor and characters that made the anime one of my favorites was translated directly from the manga. Since I'm not sure if they'll be making any more seasons of the anime (cries), I'll have to start reading this regularly.
Rin and Yukio are a bizarre pair of brothers, one an exorcist and one a demon trying to learn the art of exorcism. I didn’t know anything about this manga going in, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the characters and their easy banter with one another! This was a solid start, though nothing outstanding. I’m interested to see where the story will go once more characters get introduced and new conflicts arise!
A teenager finds out he's the son of the devil and the devil wants to now use him but he refuses. Instead he joins people who can exorcise demons to get revenge for his father like figure who was killed because of the devil. Between him and his brother they work together on a way to rid the world of demons.
The dynamic between the brothers actually works. Obviously they love each other but they also have issues with each other. The best part is them working out their differences and the fight scenes being pretty easy to follow. But the rest of the story is typical, no real weight behind the story yet. No characters that spark interest right off the bat. I usually give shonen's about 3 volumes to really impress me before dropping so I'll give volume 2 a whirl but this was decent.
first review of 2022 and the first (again...) in a reeeeally long time - hehe.
─•~❉᯽❉~•─
i've wanted to read this series for a reaaaally long time- i remember attempting to start it 4 years ago in middle school after hearing about it before that, lol. (needless to say... i never got around to it.) so, naturally, i was really excited when i saw this at the local library after experiencing a book desert at home. overall, the book was very engaging and i found myself struggling to put it down. the great pacing added to the steady and investing plot development, and for a first installation, characterization (for most characters, which i'll get to in a bit) was accomplished very well. it was very impressive to see the first in a series have so many well-executed plot twists without causing a constant climax or being overly complicated, and the backstories it provided regarding character motivations well laid the ground for the installments to come.
what wasn't so enjoyable, however, was the distinct lack of characterization or investing backstories in the female characters. about halfway through the novel, a love interest is introduced- however, while her story seems touching at first, she is proven to lack the drive which all the male characters are written with. it's basically like, rin is pent up on training hard to avenge his dead father and fight his conflicting feelings about his newfound identity, but cheimi just wants to make friends!1!! and is naive enough to have another girl freeload off her favors.
i dealt with enough of the shallow-blond-female-character trope in death note - don't get me wrong, it's my favorite series, and i love misa - but really? it gets quite frustrating for a character to seem genuinely investing only for her to never be expanded on behaviorally and be treated like a doormat. however, i also don't want to say too much, so note that this review is limited to this installation. with that being said, as of now i see a major difference in how the male and female characters of this series are written, and it hinders my enjoyment of the series a little.
overall? this was an impressive first book, with the only significant factor keeping it from being a 5-star rating being the overused feminization trope. i hope to finish this series soon, it's really investing. anyways, that marks the end of this essay. see y'all soon with another review, hopefully! ♡
What should I saw about Blue Exorcist Vol 1? First of all,the word 'addicting' is a small one for such a Manga. This is nit actually gonna be a proper review, mostly 10 reasons to try this manga: •It has awesome characters.Only the fact that Rin is my anime crush is enough:D •It has awesome pictures and an awesome plot •It's BETTER than the anime of course! •It's action packed •It is full of plot twists •It's funny •It's got amazing fantasy elements and an amazing world building •It's got mystery •The series of volumes is not TOO extended (like One Piece for example) •It can be amazing as first manga to read
Basically,I give it a 5 out of 5 stars and I recommend it for fans of the Mortal Instruments who want to join the amazing world of anime and manga and become otakus Arigato for watching ~Mary Okamura(no really, just wish soXD)
I watched the first season of the anime a while ago and absolutely loved the action and drama, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the the manga is just as dynamic.
The art style is very similar in both mediums and the characters are just as vivid and spirited. I think the anime does a better job of explaining the world, the demons, and Rin's powers, but for a first volume this really grabs your attention, and keeps you captivated. I've already started volume two and can definitely see myself carrying on with this series.
This was really fun! I really liked Rin and Yukio’s relationship. Rin is hotheaded and Yukio is calm but they both want to protect each other. But also Yukio is doing some shady shit with exorcist school. So we’ll see how that plays out. We also meet cute girl named Shiemi. I’m excited to see where this series goes!
