3.5/5 ⭐️ — Is There a Moose in My Pocket? by Kim Green This book kind of caught me off guard—I think it low-key put me in a bit of a reading slump at first because it was so different from what I usually read. But once I got into it, I ended up really enjoying it. The characters were quirky, and there was a fun mix of drama, mystery, and real-life messiness. The writing was witty and had a light, humorous tone that kept me entertained.
I thought the main character, Jen Brenner, was interesting and brave in ways she didn’t even realize. Watching her navigate her relationships—with her family, friends, and lovers—added emotional depth to the story. Her dynamics with each of them felt authentic and often hilarious. Overall, it was a solid, cute romance-comedy with surprising layers, and even though it started slow for me, I’m glad I stuck with it.
This book is so silly, but I ended up really liking it (probably 3.5 stars), despite the many stereotypes about Montana and journalism. I am a journalist from Montana so I worried at first this would drive me crazy. But I was able to suspend belief and just go along with it. And some of the stereotypes she hit perfectly and are totally true. On an impulse Jen Brenner takes a temporary job working at a small town newspaper in Montana where there are tons of single men- most of whom are also her sources on the high-drama story she stumbles into that leads to a bombing of the newsroom and a kidnapping of her new lover's child. Yes, it is as ridiculous as it sounds. But the author is able to create such a fun read and likeable character you can go along with it- even if does seem weird that she sees a man across the room and actually falls in love with him for real in about one week, not just being dramatic in her head. And he of course feels it too, inviting her immediately to dinner with his daughter for their first and only date in their cursed love affair.

I didn't think this book was that great. . . I gave it 2 stars only because I didn't think it was so awful to warrant one of no stars. There were too many characters at times to keep up with and it was somewhat predictable. I probably wouldn't read anything else by this author.
I'm a little biased, since this book is loosely based on my own life, and written by my sister, but I think it's a damn good read. Quick plot: a San Francisco journalist goes to Montana to get away from a relationship-gone-wrong and meets the usual cast of characters.
Loved this book. Read a long time ago.Green can make you laugh with her descriptions. This novel has some graphic sex scenes. I had just been to San Fran when I read this. It was a lot of fun.
