The world is no longer safe, no longer thriving. It has been inherited by the diseased.
The red mist spread, and humanity was infected. There was no stopping the curse once it started, and the world's population was reduced to mindless beasts. Creatures that hungered and raged for the death of the pure, the uninfected.
First things first, I got a free copy of this book from the author, in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was free to give this book any rating/review that I felt was appropriate. While I do not know this author personally, it should be noted that I am a fan of her work. The story picks up shortly after the conclusion of the first book in the series titled After (The Phoenix Curse, Part 1). In search of safety, Ali and Joss travel back to Sundown and the small group of survivors who had once helped them. However, they find that the safe haven has been overrun, leaving the handful of battle scarred survivors in need of Ali and Joss’s help. If you enjoyed Part one, you are sure to enjoy this sequel. With the same endearing characters and a couple more added, this book will hook you into the plight of the survivors as they battle both zombies and wicked humans alike. The settings are rich with details. The emotional struggles of the characters provides the reader with insights into how and why each of the characters ended up where they were. The plot unfolds at a steady and exciting pace. In a world where zombies are not the only danger, After Part 2 takes a deeper look at the darker side of man kind and the resilience of human virtue. Once again, my only complaint was that there was a cliffhanger ending! Ugh! I can hardly wait until spring for the conclusion! Also there were a couple errors (wrong words) in my copy, not enough for me to be distracted yet notable. While not heavy with gore or violence, this book does contain some mature content that may not be suitable for young readers. Other than that single caution, I highly recommend this book to readers of Zombie, Survival, and Post Apocalyptic sub-genres.
***Update*** Going to re-read before starting the 3rd book. May even read the 1st one. It's just THAT GOOD! (5.12.15)
Solid, solid, SOLID sequel! I loved this book! It kept my attention and I couldn't put it down. My boyfriend finally had to turn out my lamp and take my kindle away from me! I cannot wait til the 3rd installment comes out!
If you enjoyed the first one, you'll enjoy this one even more!
OK...I'm giving this 4 stars and I'm not even sure why. I guess, just because I liked it! It is not original, although in this zombiesque genre I am not sure there is anything left original. The writing is fine but not outstanding, the characters are well enough developed but, again, not outstanding. But I must say, it was a very fun read and I will definitely be reading the last one. One thing that did stand out was the way the author brings in the character of Seth, through small bits and pieces in the form of flashbacks only. As we get to know this character, who is supposedly dead, but must not really be(because she keeps giving us more and more about him),throughout the first two books, we can't help but feel he must be going to show up alive and I am anxiously expecting it! All in all, I found it an enjoyable read.
