World Builder by Lucas Kitchen is about a being that came to earth and has all his memories taken from him by his travelling companion Ruth. She was to safe guard them until it was time to give them back. However, Ruth observes James , a human, at a low point in his life, ready to commit suicide, so she gives James Truss’s memories. James now thinks he is of great cosmic importance and now Ruth is unable to give Truss his memories back which he really needs like pronto because the Molgathra’s Archetype asked him to transport” her” out of the cave she is in so she can die in peace but Truss doesn’t know if he can trust her and the other Molgathras. He also doesn’t know if he should trust Ruth either. Truss tries to figure out who he can and cannot trust and tries to get his memory back. After he finds out what Ruth has done, Truss is so pissed off and doesn’t want to listen to Ruth. He takes James and James’s friend Riley with him to the Molgathra’s Archetype, so he can get his memories back. Events unfold as they are supposed to and Truss is ready for what is to happen next.
World Builder starts off a little slow but is a well written novel. The story has several separate components that all end up tying back together to form one exciting cohesive story, The characters are different but in a good way. There not your typical cookie cutter characters. They make the story so much fun and much more interesting. Riley is the perfect example. Some of the things he said just had me cracking up.(Riley is throwing milk cartons at police and is saying “Bombs away pigs! I hope you like milk wit’ dat bacon!” “It does a body good, bitch!”)
This book is definitely worth your time to read and is a great start to the series.
*I won this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaway. In no way has this influenced my rating or opinion of this book.*
I purchased the audio book over Audible, but thought I'd sing the book's praises on the platforms I use most frequently - that being Audible, Goodreads, and here on Amazon.
In a word... enjoyable. The author's voice (and I don't mean the audio) is refreshing. The book was quirky, in a good way. Healthy descriptions, interesting characters with numerous idiosyncrasies that make them fun to follow, and action and plot devices that weigh in on a truly epic scale. Several times throughout the story I found myself in awe of the author's level of research, the level of detail and how effortlessly it appeared. I also listened to the book almost straight through... at least I wanted to. It became my evenings treat before bed and one I couldn't wait to get back to.
World Builder might be mislabeled. Although it has sci-fi elements, I feel like it might be better branded fantasy, or adventure; it might even deserve the label of thriller. Overall, it crosses many genre's... all the good stories do, right?
If you're looking for a fresh new voice in sci-fi (fantasy) and want to be engaged by an original concept with quirky, interesting characters, this is the book for you. It's totally worth the read.
