Rowena decided to leave her own world and enter Prince Caedmon's world and time and she brought along the key with her. Rowena loses her memories within minutes of her arrival and Prince Caedmon can't do anything about it. He is also immediately sent off to the neighboring kingdom, Seviere, where it is revealed that he is captured along with the key.

Now it's been two years since Rowena came to this time and place and still can't remember anything. She is trying to fill in the blanks and also to pass her time and with a secret purpose in her mind, she trains with the royal guard after getting special permission from the king. She is days away from passing the final test and earning her freedom away from the castle when she gets news of Prince Caedmon's escape and arrival. Of course, Prince Caedmon can't wait to see Rowena but Rowena doesn't remember him and what's even worse is that she doesn't trust him at all. Prince Caedmon believes that his capture was no coincidence and he is trying to figure out that mystery along with a way to win Rowena's heart and her trust. On the other side, Rowena is trying to win her freedom and a way to re-gain her memories. They have both been through so much and their struggles were captured quite nicely.

I loved the first book in the series. Although this wasn't as good as the first book, it wasn't bad either. My main issue with this book was Another thing that was missing from this book was Ollie. Other than that I quite liked this, even though this ends too soon and without giving any answers. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Trying to find her place in a world where she knows she doesn’t quite fit, Rowena struggles to earn respect and freedom. Two years apart and a man desperate for the arms of the woman he loves returns, seeing only her, needing her, rushing to her. Caedmon has come home, but Rowena has changed and this is the first of many scenes that start piercing your heart with hot pokers, one after another. How does Caedmon break through to Rowena’s heart, unlocking what has been stolen from both of them? An inner ache is trying to tell Rowena something about this man, but, like a fleeting thought, it is just out of her grasp.

Proving once again that less can be more, A. J. Nuest’s Candra’s Freedom is an intensely romantic, intensely emotional trip into the fantasy of love and romance. The magic of her writing fills each page with vivid scenes, the deepest inner thoughts of her main characters, their pains and their joys as well as their confusions and frustrations. Rowena and Caedmon will burrow into your heart, while their plight has you reaching for your box of tissues, had Candra’s Freedom been any longer and I may have needed a roll of paper towels. Only a tale that becomes personal through the efforts of a wonderful storyteller can do this to me. A. J. Nuest is a wonderful storyteller.

I received this copy from the author in exchange for my honest review, and honestly, this short read packs as much punch as one three times its size.

Fighting for her freedom and to reclaim her memories, Rowena cannot deny she is drawn to Prince Caedmon but he is nothing more than a stranger after his two year absence. Caedmon pursues his love with great conviction. Caught between the pride he has for her as he recognizes the woman that she truly is and his desire to keep her safe in his arms, he refuses to give up on the love they once shared. I liked Rowena in 'Rowena's Key'. Candra's Freedom just made me fall in love with her! Fierce and headstrong, she is everything a heroine should be. A.J. Nuest is killing me in the best way possible and Jan. 9th cannot come fast enough.

I received this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

Many thanks to the author for giving me a copy of this book to read and review. I absolutely loved it! The second book in the series is much darker than the first. I finished it in one reading. It was that good.

Favorite quote from the book: Prince Caedmon says this to Rowena when she tells him to speak plainly to her. It shows the depth of his love for her. "In the nearly two years since our last kiss, I have thought about you every moment of every hour of every day, and betimes found the strength to endeavor only with the knowledge that I would one day soon look upon your lovely face."

Story: At the end of book 1, Rowena had crossed through the veil and the consequences of that act was the loss of her memory. Caedmon leaves immediately to deliver the key so that peace can continue. So, she is left in a strange land with no one to look out for her.

In the prologue of this book, Rowena has become so distraught over her situation that she attempts suicide. She feels controlled by everyone and in the back of her mind knows she does not belong here. Rowena also has had to contend with unwanted sexual advances from Prince Braedric.

Now, we fast forward two years later and everyone is awaiting the return of Prince Caedmon. He has just escaped from being held captive. He knows that someone betrayed him and is determined to find out whom. Everyone from the King on down is gathered awaiting his ship. Price Caedmon is so excited to be home he jumps into the water and swims to shore. Rowena is not thrilled that he is home. She has made great strives to earn her freedom. She has but one hurdle to pass to achieve that. Tomorrow at the Apex, she will face five warriors on the Gantlet. If she succeeds, she will be awarded the title of Militissae. She can then go anywhere and reinvent herself. Rowena wanted to be gone before he ever returned. Prince Caedmon reaches everyone gathered to greet him, but he ignores everyone and heads straight to Rowena. Rowena tries to back up, but there is no retreat. This is my favorite scene in the book. When Prince Caedmon gets to her he drops to his knees and buries his head in her skirts. I felt so much anguish for him. Rowena feels sorry for him, but she will not be fooled by his kindnesses. Price Caedmon definitely senses that something is not right. He knew she lost her memory, but had hoped she had gained her memory of him.

After their first meeting, Caedmon realizes he came on too strong and needs to take a more measured approach toward Rowena. Prince Caedmon goes to escort her to dinner and this is where their battle begins. Prince Caedmon insists their engagement still stands, but Rowena just wants her freedom.

The rest of the book deals with Prince Caedmon and Rowena's relationship and the ultimate question: Will Prince Caedmon regain her love?

I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This book ends on a major cliffhanger like book 1.

Overall, an excellent fantasy romance with great characters.

Fantastic second installment of The Golden Key Chronicles. I love both the story and the writing. I don't ever discuss plot in my reviews because that may spoil someone else's enjoyment but rest assured I wasn't disappointed with where the author took the characters. As someone relatively new to reading this genre I must admit I've been missing out all these years but this series is helping to catch me up! I'm definitely looking forward to the next release in the series in January.

*Warning: Contains spoilers. This is book 2 and is to be read after Rowena's Key*

I love Rowena. I love her with every fiber of my being. I love her so much I want to reach inside the book and hug her until she's like "OK, who's this bitch and why is she hugging me?" She's SO my kind of woman!

She's the "sorceress" from Rowena's Key-Book 1. After she comes through the veil and gives Prince Caedmon the key he needs to save his land he has to ride off to another to try and negotiate peace. Only as he's forced to ride off, Rowena's memories are now gone and she has no idea where she's from, who anyone is, etc. Oh, and she's she's stuck in the medieval ages. Literally. You like the idea of knights and fencing and all that "romantic" stuff, ladies? Let me put some things in perspective: Imagine you're a woman and you get paid less than your male counterpart, that you're expected to have kids, AND stay at home and raise them. Imagine you're expected to work or called otherwise a gold digger if you don't, but you're yelled at if you don't make more money than your husband. Imagine guys look at you, but don't listen, or that you're judged by your age...all this would be hell, right ladies? Sounds like the medieval ages doesn't it? Ha! Not even. Welcome to the year 2014. That's right.

NOW imagine you're a woman who's not allowed to even speak without permission, you're owned by whomever you're married to (which by default eliminates your choice to say 'no' to sex), you can't have an opinion, you have NO choice in having kids or not, you can't have a job, earn your own money, or train in any kind of physical activity. That chivalry crap was just that: crap. What good is having a guy open a door for you if you're berated and pushed around behind that door? What does this have to do with the book? Everything. This is Rowena's personal hell. Even her prince doesn't know whether to kiss her all over or spank her (Note: spanking is cool in the bedroom between a consenting couple, it is NOT cool as a form of "keeping someone in line" or "putting a woman in her place". Learn the difference, guys).

After Caedmon escapes a prison and his captors keep the key he comes home only to find his love, Rowena, has forgotten him along with everything else since she's come through the veil - 2 years ago!

But Rowena wasn't your typical female living in 2014 and she isn't your typical female living in medieval times, either. She is a strong, independent woman who doesn't let her gender stop her from having freedom, making decisions, training in physical combat and she refuses to submit or to being owned. She just mildly escapes and attack from the retched Prince Braedric and immediately petitions the king to let her train with the guard. Finally she does.

Rowena learns quickly and is a good fighter...so good that when Caedmon returns home and follows her relentlessly to try and regain her affections he notices the guards all have marks on their faces. However, they don't fear her or pine after her: they respect her. Let me say that again. The guards - the men- Respect her. You see ladies, standing up for yourself (as opposed to submitting like every other woman in history) gains you respect. If nothing else, Rowena respects herself for not living in the boxes everyone else has cut out for her.

Her last test consists of fighting 5 of the best guards. What she doesn't know is that Caedmon has made himself one of the 5. He thinks he's doing her good, but it's really a means to show her she belongs in his bed. Now I'm not blaming him entirely, b/c he really thinks he knows what's best for her and that his love for her will heal all her wounds. I kind of feel sorry for him in a way. He truly does love her and suffered every moment being a prisoner. Not b/c of what he went through (and while not graphic it was hinted that it was pretty awful), but b/c he was away from the love of his life.

What he doesn't get is that love doesn't conquer all. Sometimes it causes more pain than it heals. It's autonomy that means more than can ever be put into words. There is no greater force in any universe than that of choice - not even love. Rowena knows this, and she just can't seem to make her point. She almost wins the Gantlet and her freedom as a citizen in her own right until both are seen as at fault and the King declares Caedmon's and Rowena's battle a draw. Caedmon can't understand her frustration and pain, when in fact he's the cause of it. I swear, every time women get more rights and freedoms there's always some guy that comes along and pushes her back. No, this isn't about man hate: it's about equality and unless you're a woman you don't see the double standards we live through on a day to day basis (then again, there are some women that believe there's no such thing as a pay gap, either...)

After the draw Rowena leaves with the falcon she's trained. Yes, the woman trained a bird of prey! She takes the bird and the horse that no one else was able to tame (Yet another reason why I love her. She's nothing less than kick ass.), and sneaks away into the night, heading for the land that had imprisoned Caedmon and still has her golden key. She's determined to get her memories back on her own, and not from Caedmon who wants to help her get them back just so she'll love him again.

Again, I pity Caedmon. He's just a love struck loon who doesn't get what the real issue here is. Yeah, I get that you love her, man, but true love listens to her heart, it doesn't dictate from yours (or any other body part).

She makes her own way in life; She WILL find a way to live her life her own way, rules be damned...

Every woman who complains that chivalry is dead and should make a comeback needs to read this book.

It'll even open your eyes to 'freedoms' you think you have today...

Thank you Ms. Nuest for writing a book that encourages women instead of hindering them. Thank you for showing that women ARE equal and can do the same things as men if they put their minds to it. Thank you for writing a strong female lead that doesn't go chasing after some stupid alpha just because he's hot.

Sure it's a fantasy/adventure book, but the point is you can do anything you put your mind to, ladies. Don't ever let anyone tell you any differently. Not men, and not other women, either. Do your own thing. Because it's your life, sister - Live it your way!

I received a copy of Candra's Freedom from the lovely A.J. Nuest in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much, A.J!

(Originally posted on Becca's Books ~ http://beccasbooooks.blogspot.co.uk/2...)

I absolutely freaking loved the return of Rowena! She's back, and she's now a bad-ass b***h with an attitude to go with it. Not forgetting her new-found skill with a pair of blades. Damn, I was sitting back, fist-pumping the air, yelling, "Go girl!"

After reading +AJ Nuest's first instalment in The Golden Key Chronicles series Rowena's Key, I genuinely could not wait to get my hands on Candra's Freedom. I stated in my review that fantasy wasn't my thing, but I am all over this series and I'm already dying to read #3!

In Candra's Freedom, we are re-introduced to Rowena, A.J.'s main female character in the series. After ending Rowena's Key with Prince Caedmon being dragged away and Rowena being left on her lonesome in a strange kingdom and with no idea how the hell she got there, I was dying with curiosity as to what was going to happen next. As Candra's Freedom begins, Rowena is presented to the reader as an independent woman with a hardcore skill for battle and a sharp tongue. I absolutely loved this side of Rowena. It was such a huge contrast to how I first perceived her and I really enjoyed watching her fight for her freedom.

As soon as Prince Caedmon re-entered the story, I was completely ready for the sparks to fly. He was just as swoon-worthy as he was in the first book, with his hard muscles and manly build. Unfortunately for him, Rowena didn't take too kindly to his return. Having been used to doing her own thing, and unable to remember anything before ending up in his kingdom (including their steamy love-making sessions) Rowena is rather confused as to what is expected of her. Prince Caedmon, on the other hand, is utterly enchanted by her, even if she is a little feisty, and I just adored how he looked at her, always lustful and in wonderment. It was truly romantic, and the fact that Rowena knocked away any of his advances made it all the more entertaining to read.

What transpires between them had me completely hooked. Rowena fighting for her freedom and Prince Caedmon fighting for her heart. It was a battle of wits, winner takes all, and I just couldn't admit defeat by taking my eyes away from the story for a single moment.

As was the case when I was reading Rowena's Key, I was completely enveloped within this magical, fantasy world containing wizards and romance and old-fashioned dialogue. It was a pleasure to be reunited with the endearing Rowena and her heart-throb of a Prince! The chemistry was amazing, the plot never letting my attention crawl away and I am left hanging onto reality by a single thread. What I would give to join them both in their gorgeous kingdom.

Becca's Books will be rating Candra's Freedom by A.J. Nuest with a fabulous five out of five shiny stars! This is the only fantasy novel that has held my imagination for this long. Bring on book #3! I cannot wait to see where A.J. takes my favourite fantasy couple next.

I absolutely Loved this series originally I was only going to read the first book but there was no way I could have stopped there!!!!

I Loved Rowena she is my kind of girl, Strong, Bright and Bubbly the shrewd Antique's Dealer is unsuspecting that she is in fact the Sorceress and magic Key holder linked to saving the Mystical Kingdom of Prince Caedmon Austiere, but just one look at each other and it's more then kingdom's that are at stake.

I loved this series it is a fabulous mystical tale of corruption, survival, twists and turns that leave you wondering what else could happen!! I loved the smooth action packed story line and the character's were very lovable and as Rowena and Caedmon journey on their route to true love their super sexy hot steamy encounter's leave's you hot under the collar yet yearning for more!!!

With wizard's, Witches, Falcon's and many more mystical creatures as allies as well as enemies this series is a fantasy world full of betrayal, mystical spell's and treachery on such a massive level and all aimed at denying the true heir to the Throne his rightful place.

Rowena kicks ass her time training with the Royal Guards helps her protect herself and those she loves as she and Caedmon battle to save the kingdom and themselves and stop the foretold prophecy from coming true and breaking hearts.

With excellent characters and environmental back drops of amazing detail and mystical worlds this series takes you to a world of fairytale where the nightmare's are as real as the happily ever after's

Absolute must read and any fantasy lovers dream adventure.

Rowena has no memory of her past and she feels alone in the castle. Prince Caedmon can't be by her side. He's still as much in love with her as he was since the first moment he saw her, but he has no idea how she feels. Rowena isn't going to sit back and be sad. She doesn't like most of the people in the castle and she wants to be able to fight. That's why she's started training to become a fierce warrior. It's her ticket out of the castle, which is all she can think about. Will Caedmon be able to return on time to win her back or has she forgotten everything about him as well?
Rowena is suddenly a strong and kick-ass heroine with a terrific falcon on her shoulder. She wins every battle, but something is standing in her way. She has to fight to become free again. Candra's Freedom is very different from the first novella in The Golden Key Chronicles. It was a nice surprise. AJ Nuest can tell a story and this one is absolutely wonderful again. I loved the fighting scenes. They show how much Rowena has grown as a person. Even though she doesn't have any memories from before she stepped through the mirror, she still has the same determined character, which is what's making her so likable. I'm glad I've discovered AJ Nuest's books. When I read them it feels like it's my birthday. I'm opening a present every time I start one.

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

So, Rowena's Key ends in a cliff hanger where Rowena gives Caedmon the key he believes will save the kingdom and ends up trapped in his realm. It sounds great for them to finally be in the same realm, but once the mirror shatters and leaves her in his realm...it also takes her memories. She doesn't remember where she is and why she's there. But more importantly, she doesn't remember Caedmon. Book 2 of the series, opens with Rowena struggling to find her place in Caedmon's world and without Caedmon.

Rowena is feeling trapped and confused, and Caedmon has been taken as a prisoner in another kingdom as he completes the journey of the key. The joys of this book are truly Rowena and her development as a strong and endearing woman. She isn't weak in the first book but there's an edge to her now that makes her FIERCE! She doesn't take any crap and she's determined to carve out her own way and take her independence. AJ has given us what the genre is aching for...a strong woman!!! Even in her soft moments with Caedmon, she is still STRONG!

And Caedmon, oh Caedmon. The man will steal your heart. He is sweet, gentle, tender. He's everything a Prince should be plus sincere! Heads up though, there's no Ollie in this book. I know, I know. But I've been assured that he returns. So glad I started this series. Happy reading!

After the shocking cliffhanger in the last installment, I was more than eager grab up this second book in the Golden Key Chronicles series to find out what happened next.

This absolutely has to be read in order because it builds on the last book and assumes the reader has read it to know the situation, the characters and the ongoing plot. It doesn't pause to catch the reader up so fair warning there.

This one starts out two years after the events of Rowena's Key. Rowena still resides in the castle of Caedmon's father the king and her memories are still absent. She is hemmed in by people with their own agendas and has learned the hard way how to handle herself. All she can dream of is getting away from all this and be free. Before her plans can come to full fruition though, the prince who claims her has escaped his imprisonment and is free. She assumes he is like his brother, his father and all the other nobles so she wants nothing to do with him and her plans are unchanged. Caedmon is just one more reason to get away.

Caedmon returns with the knowledge that his imprisonment and torture were due to lies and a betrayal from within. He is now free and wants two things. He must deal with the plotting and betrayal against himself and his people, but he must somehow find a way to again win the heart of the woman he loves. Rowena is not making it easy.

This was another wink and a blink quick read. The last story was a blend of genres, but this one stayed well within the realm of fantasy romance. It is told from alternating third person perspectives. It was exciting especially with that long scene where Rowena proved her fighting prowess, but it was frustrating too when it came to the romantic relationship. Truthfully, this one was all prickles and the romance is all one sided. Rowena's amnesia and Caedmon's long imprisonment really mess things up for them. Mostly this is true because Rowena is left to fend for herself in a hostile environment that leaves her hard and distrustful. Can't blame her, but it was hard to see after how close they were at the end of the first book. Rowena comes across a tad rude and insensitive because she was so set on her plans and determined to push blindly forward without paying attention to the clues that were there that she was doing Caedmon a disservice. I know this is intentional and a part of me understands putting up walls after what she went through, but I adore Caedmon and felt so bad for what he found when he finally came home. At least, he now has even more respect for the lady he loves after seeing her in action. So the tension in their romance is stretched taunt again and I must wait and see.

There are so many hints of big things to come particularly when it comes to the secret plotting in high places. The foreshadowing of this story has my anticipation on high alert for what is to come. It just keeps getting more exciting.
Fantasy romance lovers should definitely give this serial of stories a look-see.

My thanks to the author for providing this book in exchange for my honest review thoughts

Strong language: Yes
Drugs: No
Violence: Yes
Sexual content: Negligible

Candra's Freedom starts two years from where we left Rowena's key, with Rowena having just landed in this new world, and being separated from her Prince Caedmon. While we don't know what has happened in between it's clear that Rowena is a very different woman to the one we saw before. She still has her stubborn edge, but now she is very tough and clearly has had a hard time.

Soon a boat is arriving, returning Caedmon from his time away. Knowing the situation even less than us, he scares her with his reactions and determinations to pick up where he left off. We see a lot of the circumstances through his eyes as he has to figure the past, and learn some hard truths. This showed a very different, side to him, emotions heightened until they made a wall of steel as he had to be restrained to stop him committing murder, as well as castle life, to what had been alluded to in Rowena's Key. Backstabbing and political wordplay take precedence at every turn. He can't rescue the heart of his girl without committing treason.

On Rowena's part she has become very physical, a trait that fits her bringing some of the modern day sexual equality with her to the past. She's inventive and the fights are written believably. I did feel they were lacking somewhat in emotion, however I think this is partly in design as Rowena has had to suffer to survive. When she is alone with her hawk I think is the only time we truly see her let down her guard and see what is really going on inside. This is subtle but clean, a good piece of writing.

I would have liked more interaction between Caedmon and Rowena as this is the main draw to get somebody to pick up the second novella, but what was there was tense, tight and filled with emotion from both sides, even if they weren't on the same page. I particularly liked the reversal of language in their main discussion, with Rowena having picked up the nobility's way of speech, but imploring Caedmon to "speak plainly" as he adopted speech nearer to what we'd use in every day. He was fluent and heartfelt, it made me really root for them.

Looking at the overall plot of this novella I am surprised it ended how it did and hope this was setup for a future book in the series or it will feel like we're back to square one again.

The 411
A very different tone to the previous novella, I liked the action packed side being broken by matters of the heart. The writing was clean and precise, but spent a bit long on some aspects.

Overall it kept my attention and made me want to read on to find out how this can be resolved.

I give this novella a 4

Candra’s Freedom is a tad bit shorter than Rowena’s Key, the first book in the Golden Key Chronicles, but it still packs quite a punch! Even with its minor faults it’s still a quick, satisfying and addictive read.

I’d highly recommend reading the first book before starting this one to really appreciate Rowena as a character. After Prince Caedmon reluctantly leaves her side, Rowena is left on her own with no memories of her life, who she is, or what is happening. She is pretty much forced into a fierce and independent transition in order to survive. Although she is staying at the castle, royal intrigue has kept her at arm’s length from everyone around her. It’s difficult to know who to trust and who can be turned to for help so Rowena relies on herself. In the two years since Caedmon has been gone she has furiously trained with the royal guard to become an independent, respected, and strong-willed warrior. Her only desire is to escape her confinement and live away from the scrutiny and confusion of her current life at the castle.

Prince Caedmon was whisked away shortly after the events in book one. He was actually taken captive during an important mission that involved Rowena’s move into Caedmon’s realm. I’m trying to be ridiculously vague in order to prevent any spoilers of the previous book or this one, so bear with me. With the disappearance of Rowena’s memories of everything so went her recognition and love for Caedmon. So when he finally escapes and returns to his kingdom he soon realizes that Rowena is no longer the sweet and docile woman he left. He must tread carefully in order to regain Rowena’s trust and hopefully her love. Caedmon also knows that his capture had nothing to do with chance but rather someone’s betrayal.

There was a lot of action in this installment rather than romance. With Rowena’s shift in personality comes a lot of growth in her character development. I really enjoyed the fighting scenes that show just how much Rowena has had to change in order to survive. But oh how I miss the romance… I’m excited to continue on with the series and see more of Rowena and Caedmon. I’d really like to see some more development on the magical aspect of the key and the kingdom now that it is the current setting of the story. I would have liked a more fleshed out transition in the beginning of the story since there is a significant time jump. I was also a bit confused on the title, if the name Candra was explained somewhere in the first or second book I completely missed it. Either way the change in pacing and direction of the story was very much welcomed. I can’t wait to see what book three has in store.

Rowena traveled through the mirror to be with her Prince in a fairy tale land, but she’s yet to find her fairy tale ending. Two years ago she lost her memory and her prince was captured, since then she has despised her life as the revered, yet mocked, sorceress. She is a captive in the castle, without freedom or safety. Rowena has a plan to escape, but then her prince returns…

Candra's Freedom is the second novella in the Golden Key Chronicles. There is a much darker tone to the second installment of the Golden Key Chronicles than the last. Rowena is no longer the relatively carefree antiquarian of the first book, but has experienced significant trauma during her captivity. While I was surprised by the increased melancholy of this novella, I was impressed by the deeper level it added to the fairy tale. There is also less explicit romance in this title than the last. Though romance is still the point of the story, Candra’s Freedom takes the series in an increasingly adventure-romance direction.

Despite her traumatic experiences, Rowena is no victim, and the adventure aspect to this romance is not one of a simpering princess waiting to be rescued. Instead, Rowena takes her fate into her own hands and becomes a warrior in her own right. As Rowena fights (quite literally) to break free of her bonds, it is Caedmon who takes the lead in the romance of this tale. He is desperate to win back Rowena’s affections since her memory loss, and I found his tale of longing no less heart breaking than Rowena’s.

Fans of Rowena’s Key might be surprised by the new darkness of Candra’s Freedom, which contrasts quite a bit to the more humorous elements of the previous novella, but they won’t be disappointed. It is clear that, far from being your simple fairy tale, the Golden Key Chronicles will be as much of an emotional roller-coaster as a tale of enthralling enchantment.

AJ Nuest’s stories have the ability to sweep readers into a magical kingdom, even without the aid of an enchanted mirror. Thank goodness it won't be long until Book 3 is released!

This is the second in a series of romance-fantasy books by A J Nuest - as I loved the first one (Rowena's Key - check out my review here), I was lucky enough to be sent an e-copy of the sequel. Believe me, after the cliff-hanger at the end of Rowena's Key, I REALLY needed to get my hands on this. Candra's Freedom felt a bit more like a novella to me than a full-blown novel, but with my time restrictions at the moment (imagine me surrounded by mounds of books and reams of paper in a slightly dingy and untidy student room), this was just what I needed for a bit of light reading.

Rowena finds herself trapped in a castle with no memory or her life before the room she is in. After a number of unsavory advances from her captor, Prince Braedric, combined with the unwavering belief that the people of this mystical place have in her being a sorceress, she begins to strengthen herself for escape. However, this also starts to go downhill with Caedmon returns and states that they're ... betrothed?! And she's expected to love him?! - Fuck that!

This really spoke out to me about female empowerment. Rowena is a strong-headed female protagonist who recognises that she has sexual desires, yet does not allow them to alter her convictions or plans. If you want to read a really realistic (read believable, frustrating, tear-your-hair-out 'why are people like this' moments!) romance that happens to be set in a mystical world, this is your bag. This series is shaping up to be something really spectacular, and I cannot wait to see what comes next!

What a thrill. This one is lighter on the romance and heavier on the suspense than the first novella in the series, but delicious all the same. There is also much more subterfuge, but it’s just as gripping, if not more so. Nuest’s descriptions make you giggle while putting a vivid picture in your mind. This entire world is brought to life in an incomparable manner. She also writes exhilarating battle scenes filled with bravery and cunning that will have your nerves on edge. The entire read was a rush. If I wasn’t hooked on the series before I definitely am now.

Don’t even get me started on the characters. They are the same, yet different. The years between the instalments have changed them, yet you can still see the people they used to be. I’m definitely in love with the male lead. My heart breaks for him. I found myself rooting for his success. I also felt myself hurting for as well as being proud of the female lead. I couldn’t imagine two better suited individuals for the opposition that they play.

Overall? A phenomenal read. My favourite fantasy of the year to date. Nuest combines suspense with court intrigue in a manner that’s devilishly entertaining. As much as this novella wouldn’t make sense without reading the first in the series it’s still a must read for all!

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

I read the first story, Rowena’s Key, last year and enjoyed the characters and fairytale world introduced. I gladly accepted a review copy of Book 2 (Candra's Freedom) from the author...

There is a two-year time jump between Book 1 and 2, and Rowena has completely changed. After losing her memory when she traveled through the mirror, she has reinvented herself as a warrior, capable of beating the best men in the army. But she has also forgotten her love for Caedmon, and dreams only of escaping the castle. Caedmon returns after being imprisoned for 2 years, and his love for Candra was the one thing that kept him going. He’s crushed to find her still without her memories of their courtship, and vows to win her love again.

I loved the change in Rowena's character; it definitely made the series more intriguing. It may be a stretch that she has become a top warrior in such a short time, but hey, this is fantasy, and we believe :D

Caedmon doesn't disappoint: even after all he endured while imprisoned, he's still a gentleman at heart, and there's an epic scene when he returns home to Rowena. He's such a fun and emotional character.

There's not a lot of romance in this episode; it's more a bridge to take the adventure further and to lead Rowena and Caedmon on a mutual quest. I can't wait to see them team up in Book 3!

I was - obviously - very excited about reading the next chapter in The Golden Key Chronicles. The first one ended on an amazing cliffhanger and I just couldn't wait any longer to read what was next for Rowena and her prince. Candra's Freedom takes place 2 years after Rowena entered this new world. She was expecting a happily ever after with her prince, and so was he.

What neither of them expected is that Rowena lost her memory and doesn't remember anything.. including prince Caedmon. Before they can try and work it out though, Caedmon is sent away to save is father's kingdom. After two years in captivity, he's finally headed home to his love, Rowena. Both Caedmon and I were not expecting the welcome Rowena gave him(!).

Will Caedmon be able to convince Rowena of his love for her?

Rowena is a very strong character, even more so now than she was before. This new, unknown world has made her a though fighter. But has she become to headstrong to see what's right in front of her?

I was very surprised by how their story continued and even frustrated when it ended! I was completely absorbed into the story and had not seen the page count. Just like she did before, AJ Nuest leaves you desperate for more!

I'm cheering for Rowena and her prince; can't wait to see how/if they'll make it and overcome all these obstacles.

After leaving us with a cliffhanger in the first book, Rowena's Key with Rowena losing her memory and Prince Caedmon being whisked away, Candra's Freedom brings us to Prince Caedmon's world two years on.

Rowena has changed greatly from her relaxed character we met in the first book, she is strong and feisty and answers to no one. Prince Caedmon has been help captive for two years and is finally free to return, but if he thinks Rowena will fall straight back into his arms, he has another think coming!

I loved this more than Rowena's Key! I much preferred the world of Prince Caedmon and there was a more adventurous take in this book and I loved Rowena's new character. Although romance took a back seat in this, Caedmon's feelings for Rowena have not faltered in the slightest and I wanted Rowena to see sense and not be on the defensive with him. But her circumstances are completely understandable.

I was completely enchanted with the second part of The Golden Key Chronicles. So pleased the wait for the third in the series is not far off!

I absolutely wolfed this book down. It is another quick read, which had me on the edge of my seat. I think I liked this book more than the first; it had more of a fantasy feel to it.

Rowena has grown since the first book, but not in a way that you would expect. Her memories are still missing, but she is fighting to be an independent woman in a society where that is unheard of. I love her in this book and really hope she remains this feisty. Caedmon is still quite the heartthrob and I appreciate the duel perspectives which help to understand both characters.

I love how this book takes place only in Caedmon’s realm, the world building in this novella sucked me it. The action scenes were well-written and I felt like I could have easily been watching a movie.
The book ends with another cliff-hanger,and again I felt I wasn't ready for the end of the book, leaving me desperately waiting for the next installment.

I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Yesterday I reviewed the 1st book in this series and I absolutely loved it. When AJ sent me this book to review I couldn't wait to get started and finished it in one night.

I was not going to bed until I had read the next part of Rowena and Prince Caedmon story, this book was totally different from what I expected. I didn't exactly expect them to run off into the sunset of happy ever after as I knew there were 4 books, but really didn't expect what was in this book.

The books is set 2 years after book 1. Time hasn't been kind to either Rowena or Caedmon.

Again I loved Rowena, her strength of spirit is amazing, I envy her resilience and strength. With every chapter you can feel the chemistry between her and the Prince. If the Prince expected to return and Rowena to fall into his arms he was wrong and this makes this book different. There are other characters that are now coming to the fore especially the evil brother. The wizard Fandorn and the prince's mentor and friend Denman.

Not long to wait for book 3 and I for one can not wait.....

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Candra's Freedom is set 2 years after Rowena's Key.

I thought it was really amazing how much Rowena had changed and grown since the end of Rowena's Key.  She has become so much stronger and more independent.  In Caedmon's absence she has learned to look after herself.

I felt so sorry for Caedmon. He's been through so much and all he wanted was to look after the woman he loves. The only problem is that she doesn't remember him.

Denmar and Fandorn were very good to her.

Like the first this book has a cliffhanger ending. Neust knows exactly how to make you want to grab the next book. I honestly can't wait for the next one.

Candra’s Freedom is the second part in the Golden Key Chronicles. I will not go too deep into what happens in this book, in case you haven’t read the first part just yet.

In Candra’s Freedom, the reader gets a thorough insight into Rowena’s “new” life. She is (and has to be) so much more fierce in this part than she has been in the first one. She must also battle with humongous trust issues. Is Prince Ceadmon just like any of the other people in the castle or does he only have her best interest at heart?

Rowena engages in a few combat scenes, some of them are rather violent in parts, but it fits so incredibly well with the fantastic storyline.

I have hardly ever come across a book that encompasses so many intense feelings and emotions. If you haven’t read any parts of the Golden Key Chronicles yet, I would strongly recommend you do so. You will not regret being transported into this fantasy world full of passion and romance, head-strong characters and plenty of intrigues.

Last night I had really bad backache & couldn't sleep so I turned my kindle on & finished Rowena's Key & to my amazement I finished this one as well I just couldn't put it down.
How do I review this book without adding any spoilers to the review oh difficult, but after all that Rowena & Prince Caedmon went through in the first book life should be their oyster but life rarely gives what we really deserve & the young lovers face betrayal, seperation, utter turmoil, hatred. Rowena is thrown into this strange world where she has to totally relearn how to live in his time which even though he's a prince is nothing like she had read about in books the harsh reality of his life is so much more than he had told her during the veiling, it's a time of every man for himself. Rowena realises exactly what she gave up in the name of love can she ever learn to live in her Prince's time or will she end up forever feeling lost in time?

What an addictive series!

The first instalment, Rowena's Key, ended on a massive cliffhanger. Candra's Freedom begins two years later - and in that intervening time the sassy Rowena who I loved from the first book has become even more badass! I absolutely LOVED the 'combat scenes' - notoriously difficult to write well, and in a way that translates and makes sense to the reader - but it was like I was watching a film - excellent!

Poor Caedmon - after winning Rowena's heart against the odds in book 1, now she's had her memories taken away he's got to do it all over again - but this time it will be harder, as Rowena has had an awful time of it whilst he's been away; obtaining her freedom is her one and only priority.

These short novellas REALLY pack a punch - a quick but immensely satisfying read; but be warned, there's ANOTHER epic cliffhanger! Luckily I have been able to go straight on to book 3 :)

For the past two years Rowena has had to navigate a world that is completely unfamiliar to her. Ever since Prince Caedmon was taken away so long ago all she has done is survive. In doing so she has learned how to be powerful with weapons and fighting. When Prince Caedmon has finally come how she must fight off an entirely different battle. Fighting an attraction she doesn’t understand and plotting her escape is only part of Rowena’s plan for leaving a world she has no memory of.

I adored this follow up to the first book. It takes off two years after the first book ends. It is truly a great adaptation of putting modern woman in a world that is far from that. With no memory but all of her instincts screaming for a freedom she doesn’t understand made this book all the more interesting. It was also pretty fun seeing Rowena and Caedmon’s reunion. A reunion only one of them was looking forward to. This was an awesome follow-up to Rowena’s Key.

Candra's Freedom (The Golden Key Chronicles #2) by A.J. Nuest #2 Candra's Freedom.

This second part of The Golden Key Chronicles is set two years later when Rowena and Caedmon are living in the fantasy kingdom apart. Rowena is determined to gain her freedom and she shows her resourceful nature and admirable independence to achieve her aim against immeasurable odds. Tortured and imprisoned Caedmon fights his way back to his love. He finds a very different Rowena and little chance of reclaiming their lost love. There is lots of action, particularly good fighting scenes featuring Rowena but little romance except in Caedmon's memory. A great story to illustrate Rowena growing into her powers and destiny.

The 2nd in the series of 4, Candra's Freedom is just as good if not better than Rowena's Key. After coming through the veil and giving the key to Caedmon so he could save his kingdom, Rowena loses her memory. Caedmon is captured and held captive for two years and away from his lady love, Rowena. When he returns after escaping, he finds she does not remember him or their promise of love. Caedmon needs to figure out how to get her to remember. My heart breaks for Rowena for being in a foreign land with no past memories of anything, and for Caedmon, who was kidnapped and away from his love for two years until he escaped. Can't wait for more in Caedmon's curse coming in Jan 2014

I just finished CANDRA'S FREEDOM, the second installment of AJ Nuest's The Golden Key Chronicles, and I just want to say - WOW! This story is so well-written, the dialogue is excellent, it's loaded with sexual tension, and it's action-packed to the end. If that's not enough, not only is the hero, Prince Caedmon, to die for, but this heroine, Rowena, kicks ass and takes names! You're going to want to read this series!
