Boyd Chailland #2

The Devil On Chardonnay

Rate this book
A sailing adventure! Capt. Boyd Chailland goes undercover to sail, fly, fight and solve a mystery that mixes jihad, the diamond business, crooked bankers and new discoveries in vaccine technology. Someone has spent millions to make a vaccine for Ebola, the world's deadliest virus; and has kept it a secret. Why? Strategic Command's Counter Proliferation Task Force assumes the worst and re-calls Chailland, their "go to" guy for "black ops, off the books," to find out. Leading a team of quirky misfits, Boyd struggles to get ahead of the trail of deceit and death that leads to Chardonnay, a century old sailing yacht owned by notorious European merchant banker Michelle Meilland, and a trans-Atlantic crossing in hurricane season. The kick ass climax in the Azores will leave the reader breathless, but it's not over until it's over. Villains and heroes abound in this story; all are well intentioned, all are flawed. But there is only one Devil on Chardonnay.

Ed has lived in every southern state except Mississippi; but he spent the night in jail there once. That was the basis for "Bookman," historical southern fiction.

A former Air Force flight surgeon, Ed writes adventure novels featuring exotic locations, international intrigue and fast paced action featuring Captain Boyd Chailland, an Air Force fighter pilot turned undercover operative. "The Other Pilot," "The Devil on Chardonnay," The Mingrelian," and "The Fourth Domain" have all hit the Amazon best seller lists in political, financial, and travel categories.

Returning to his southern roots, Ed has completed "Sliding Delta," a story about Delta blues music. It will be released June 1. He is researching "Empire of the Sunken Lands," a multi-generational saga about the draining of America's largest swamp west of the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

Ed lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Boyd Chailland evolved after his adventure in The Other Pilot. He took a beating in that tale, and he's wary. Yet, he needs action; more action than just flying high performance fighters and training to be in the first wave in the next war. When General Ferguson shows up at Boyd's wing commander's office with a Top Secret assignment, he takes it without asking what it is. It's an international thrill ride of bad actors and close calls.

Some people died on an isolated island in the Indian Ocean after developing a secret vaccine for the world's most deadly virus; Ebola. Boyd is the team leader to find out who and why. What a team it is; Colonel Joe Smith, shy army pathologist and world expert on Ebola, Raybon Clive and Davann Goodman, disabled vets flying smuggled booze into Muslim Mombasa in an old seaplane, Pamela Prescott, lawyer and FBI agent with a drinking problem, and MacDonnald Wilde, paroled felon and con man.

The trail of death, betrayal, and bad intentions leads from jihadists in Africa to diamond brokers in Europe, to bankers in South Carolina, and finally to the century old sailing yacht Chardonnay and her owner, the notorious European merchant banker Michelle Meilland. Supported by Strategic Command's Proliferation Security Initiative command center at Ft. Belvoir in suburban Washington, DC, Boyd is backed up by the authority and resources of the entire U.S. government, yet that's not enough and when the chips are down, it's just Boyd Chailland. The plot accelerates across the Atlantic in hurricane season as the forces of evil stay one jump ahead of America's slow moving response to an action packed climax in the Azores.

This story has many heroes and villains; all well meaning, all flawed. But, there's only one devil on Chardonnay.

Air Force captain Boyd Chailland gets pulled back into a mission. His previous success, THE OTHER PILOT, marked him as a man who got things done. Tough things.

An outbreak of Ebola in an isolated African village brings WHO officials. It's obvious that someone has beat them there. Someone in a hazmat suit that took samples of the virus.

Next a transmission is picked up from an island in the Seychelles, a frantic cry for help, that they'd screwed up.

Boyd is in charge of the team that goes in to check it out. Labs were burning, a dead body sitting on the beach, one shot twice, and a number of dead monkeys. A notebook with the body on the beach spelled it out. The two men had been hired to grab a sample, develop it into something more, along with a vaccine. Now it was out there in someone's hands for what purpose no one knew.

The trail leads Boyd to a banker in Charleston, South Carolina, an old world French banker(whose family had been in the business for hundreds of years), and a sailing boat called The Chardonnay owned by the French family's granddaughter.

Sailing boats are a bit outside Boyd's wheel house, being a fighter pilot by trade, but he takes to it as he goes undercover.

Author Ed Baldwin has delivered another fine thriller full of action and colorful characters from all over the world. I learned a few things, details about stuff I only had a cursory knowledge of, and he kept me rolling over the pages in this second Boyd Chailland thriller.

I'm ready for the next one.

This book was sent to me as a First Read and I was excited when I received it. It's been about a year since "The Other Pilot" came out, so I was ready to see what new adventures Captain Chailland would be faced with.

In "The Devil on Chardonnay", Chailland sets out on a mission to locate the terrorists who have stolen and released a deadly virus across various parts of the globe. The characters are well developed and believable, and the plot is suspenseful and interesting with a twist at the end. If you love a good medical thriller mixed with travel and international mystery, this book is definitely for you. I couldn't put it down!

The Devil on Chardonnay (Boyd Chailland book #2)

Baldwin is one writer who puts you, the reader, right in the middle of the action. Air Force Captain Boyd Chailland, lead character, leads the charge. The enemy, Ebola virus that is weaponized, mutated, and carried by mosquitoes infecting everything they sting. The mission, stop the spread in its tracks. Your task, read and see how, and if Boyd succeeds. Great read.

When I received this book I wasn't sure that I would like it. The author is a retired Air Force flight surgeon and I thought I would get lost by medical and military terms. This was not so. There were just enough terms to keep the book authentic without getting me bogged down. The characters are well developed and believable as is the plot. Scary. There are twists and turns to keep you wanting more as you head to the final twist at the end. A good read. I enjoyed it.

The unspoken

Reminds me of some legends related to evil when it turned to the red eyed black figure. I found this tale to be quite riveting, enough to want to read the next book.
