This is a true story about John - a Christian man who is at the brink of suicide. Struggles, discouragement, and John's improper expectations of what God was "supposed" to do for his life caused John to leave his faith and the Lord's body, the church. John went back into every form of sin imaginable: alcoholism, drug abuse, adultery, and pornography - just as a dog returns to its vomit. John's shame and guilt, his failure to provide for his family, and the loss of all hope that God could ever forgive him brings John to a terrifying moment... holding a shotgun to his chin. He starts to pull the trigger. Can God forgive this wretch of a man? Is it possible for John to be restored and to be able to return to Jesus Christ? This raw, gritty, true story grabs the reader from beginning to end. It is a story about the real life of a discouraged Christian, and it is a story of hope, love, and the redemption found through the grace of God!
The first book, Muscle and a Shovel, was the true story of Michael and Jonetta's conversion to Christianity as taught in the New Testament. This one follows to illustrate a true story of a Christian who fell back into the world of sin.
It is a heartbreaking story of a man so deep in sin that he believes himself to be unforgivable. And by the providence of God, he was once again saved from the brink of destruction. A very moving story that is also filled with large amounts of Scripture and godly wisdom.
I did, however, prefer Muscle and a Shovel to this second volume.
The follow-up book to Muscle and A Shovel, this takes us on through the life of the author and his journey to God, living a life for God, and the struggles that come in life. Tough times mean brought the author to deep difficulty and he loses his focus on God, on living to show God to others. When this happens, life seems to spiral out of control. But in the end, he sees that God used those hard times to bring him back. What we see is a man and his family who have an amazing testimony to the loyalty and commitment of God to His children. Lives around the world have been touched by the story of Michael Shank and this writing is a tangible one that will bring God to life for you.
This books gives you more into Michael's struggles without a poor me...rather he shares his struggles into more detail and gives light finding hope of forgivenss from God and himself.
Very good job by Michael Shank showing how just because you are babtized does not mean you are saved and how many Christians struggle even more and even fall away after this
All New Testament Christians need to read. Do not read unless you have read his first book " Muscle and a Shovel". This book helps the Christian to take an honest look at themselves and their relationship with other brothers and sisters in Christ. Scripture is given and explained throughout the book. The narrative reveals how the providence of God works in the Christian life.
Michael and Jonetta Shanks are people I want to read about, read stories written by, study with, worship with and learn from. Michael Shanks has given us another winning nonfiction piece -- intense with an almost fatal twist that takes you from deep shadow to divine light in a single moment of revelation. For every Christian who is sure he has outlived all the chances God's grace will allow. As long as there is life, there is hope.
Mike delivers another story chock full of scriptures and how they are instrumental in daily living. My recommendation is to get this book if you are a Christian born again in he watery grave. If you have not obeyed the gospel, this book may not be the starting point.
1 star demotion for editorial mistakes in this version.
This book wasn't as life changing as Muscle and a Shovel, however I still feel it's necessary to read after finishing MAAS. Throughout the book there are quotes that I'll cherish forever and it's well worth the read.
