Ahh!! I loved this one even more than the first one!! It was so, so hard to put down.
I am so attached to this family! Piper is my favorite of the family with Cole being next. Cole is just amazing. I realized how much so in this book. The way he cares for his family…❤️ He’s just the best! Anyways, I love Piper! She’s so much fun! I love her kindhearted, adventurous personality. Landon… I liked him in the first book but I loved him in this one! How protective he is of Piper is the sweetest. I was totally swooning (I don’t usually use that word but it’s the best I can explain how I was feeling about Landon) I already love Gage and Darcy!! Darcy was awesome!! (Especially at the end! You go girl!!!) I really love Gage and I’m heartbroken for him. I’m hoping for his healing in book 3.❤️ I love that we start getting glimpses of their story in this book so by the time I get to go to book 3, I’m already soo excited for their story!
I LOVE Piper and Landon together! They’re literally the sweetest. They’re perfect! I love it went from Landon seeing her as his best friend’s little sister he needed to protect to the woman he fell in love with. AHH! They’re precious.
I love how there is humor and lightness along with the darker, more serious stuff. It makes it fun while also emotional. (Random thought but I love the fact that the McKenna’s mom gave them their middle names from fictional characters. I want to do that😂)
I love the setting so much! It was so atmospheric and made me want to go to Alaska even more. Reading it in winter was perfect!😍
The faith was beautiful and inspiring. Like in the first book, it was the highlight. It brought a beautiful light to a book that could have been dark giving the topic.
I would say 18+ due to some of the mature content.
Overall, I was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t put it down! I really liked it, especially loved the faith, love story, and adventure! Now starting book 3 immediately and I’m very excited about it!
I gobbled this one up in one day a couple months ago. Instantly I remembered why I enjoyed the first book so much! Piper knows her brother couldn't kill someone, but he was caught beside the body with the murder weapon in his hand. To say it looked bad would be an understatement. It's hard to guess what's coming next as clue after clue seems only to lead back to Reef as the culprit. Can she clear his name in time? You'll be on the edge of your seat, too...
Shattered by Dani Pettrey (Book 2 in the Alaskan Courage Series) - 5 Stars
I loved this second book in the series. Landon and Piper's romance story was great and the suspense had me on edge, as usual.
The Storyline: Deputy Landon Grainger is very close with the McKennas, just like they are family. When Piper's prodigal brother Reef is back in town and is accused of a murder he didn't commit, we see Landon involved in finding the truth.
This book is set in Alaska, which is one of my favorite book settings. I love this family, the friends, setting, romances and how Dani sets you up for the next couple for the next book. We saw so much of Gage, Piper's other brother, and learn a lot of his past as well. Book 3 features his romance with Darcy, a reporter he works with in this book. I am highly anticipating Gage's story! The faith content was great too as we saw several moments of prayer.
This is the second book in the Alaskan Courage series and it is Piper and Landon's story. It had good suspense and adventure, and I really liked the family.
I did think Piper was impulsive and reckless and Landon is going to have his hands full.
All in all, it was a really good addition to the series, and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Another reread for me and I seem to really like book 2 more than book 1. I have forgotten how wonderful these books are. It will have you trying to solve a who done it and follow a wonderful love story. I think the best part is you will really want to move to Alaska after reading this series!!
I predict I have finished another bestselling novel. Only time will truly tell, but I think there is much truth in what I just stated. You can thank me later. (wink)
I have been eagerly waiting for Piper and Landon’s story since the moment I finished “Submerged” last May and I was not disappointed in the least. It’s a high paced, high concept kind of story I believe will appeal across a wide spectrum of readers.
Ah, talk about romance. Landon just about melted my heart with how much he loved Piper. There is something so humbling about a character who knows he’s messed up and wants nothing else than to be able to share his love and be accepted in that love. Talk about some heart-stuttering moments.
It’s high-energy suspense coupled with a healthy dose of romance and rich and wide backstory. What I’ve loved and appreciated about these series books is we get a peek into the romance of the coming book. There is nothing better that sells a book for me, then to crave getting to know the next round of characters. We’ve been given just enough in Gage and Darcy that I’m counting the days until September.
The dialogue is outstanding! The setting as clear and cold as the snow covering the ground. Good writing takes you places. I’ve traveled the world through the pages of this story and I’m eager for the next adventure.
This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author and publisher for my copy to review.
This book was just okay for me. I really liked the complex plot, once it got out of a redundancy rut at about the halfway mark (the same portions of the case were summed up three times in the first thirty-six pages, without any/much new details). There were breathtaking stunts, surprising twists, and plenty of action. I especially loved the brother/sister bond between Piper and Reef. Her fierce belief in him, swiftly followed by intense protectiveness of him, was a sweet and special aspect of the story.
There were some content issues that dragged the story down several levels for me. * The case the leads were trying to solve revolved around a woman with very loose morals (including sleeping around, which was heavily focused on throughout the book). * Slidell seemed overly stupid to have risen to the elevated rank of sheriff. * alcohol usage * pre-marital sex * sexual innuendo throughout * tobacco usage * horoscope "sign" mentioned * at least two mentions of a man needing a cold shower * a few mentions of heat and passion between leads * attempted date rape
The second half of this book was much better than the first. The action and adventure really ramped up a lot, which kept the pages turning quickly. But the content issues overshadowed the entire story for me, particularly since the "sleeping around" thing was mentioned so often throughout.
Congratulations to my friend, Dani Pettrey! I thoroughly enjoyed Shattered.
Right at the outset of the novel, a murder occurs. The heroine's brother is arrested for the murder and so the heroine (Piper) and the hero (Landon) set off to track down the real killer and thus free Piper's brother. I was intrigued by the mysterious past of the murder victim and I had a ball following along with Piper and Landon as they uncovered a trail of clues and -- along the way -- faced their feelings for one another.
Dani paced the novel beautifully by using lots of dialogue, the threat of danger, and short scenes when called for. The familiar cast of family members we first met in Submerged added spice and warmth. And I was completely charmed by the wintry Canadian setting. It's almost like a character in the novel!
I have read several books by Dani Pettrey before and enjoyed them, so I was looking forward to reading this one. I did enjoy this book, too. I immediately liked Landon and Darcy, but it took me a little bit to warm up to Piper. I also enjoyed getting to know the whole McKenna family. I can see why I have heard that they are some reader favorites. That made me want to read the rest of the series to see what comes next for them. The suspense/mystery part of the story moved along at a good pace. I enjoyed trying to solve the murder case with them.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Such a great read. The faith elements blew me away with things I needed reminders of, the suspense literally had me up all night reading, and the romance was sooo sweet but also kept guessing with its unpredictable moments! Highly recommend.
I believe I've found another favorite series to follow! I love Dani Pettrey's writing! Piper and Landon are a wonderful couple and I'm slowly falling in love with the whole McKenna Family. It's neat how they treat Landon like he's part of the clan and I couldn't help but like Piper's sensitivity and patience with Landon's inner pain. The mystery and suspense in this story was very good, providing the perfect opportunity for the couple to simultaneously work on the case and grow closer in their relationship.
I highly recommend this series! I'll be moving on to book three!
I listened to this via the library and thoroughly enjoyed it as much as I did when I first read it years ago. Piper is my favorite of all the siblings. I love her and Landon. It was a fun and suspenseful read.
After the agonizing wait I endured for this book to come, Shattered by Dani Pettrey, did not dissapoint. Dani Pettrey is an excellent writer. She makes the characters come alive. I feel like they are real (or maybe that's just my wild imagination). I get so involved with the characters and the story she tells that I don't want the book to end. This book leads us back to the side story from book one, Submerged. Piper McKenna and Deputy Landon Grainger are the main characters in this exciting story of murder, mystery, and of course, God's love.
Deputy Landon Grainger has sworn to uphold the law, see justice done, and protect those he loves. He was "adopted" into the McKenna family and has known them for years. He is strong, protective, and honest. He is also in love, and fighting it every step of the way. I don't really know how else to describe Landon, except that I would want him fighting for me and protecting me :) (haha).
Piper McKenna is the baby of the family. She is sweet, loving, and tenderhearted woman who loves adventure, and can be independent and stubborn to a fault. Her and Landon have a unique relationship, him always trying to keep her out of trouble and from harm, and her pushing him to the limits whenever possible. I love how everyone in these two books tries to shelter Piper as much as possible. Whenever something happens, the characters first reaction is "this will kill Piper" or something to that effect. It really brings to light her character and how much everyone in the community, and especially her family, loves her.
The plot starts moving from the first page! The McKenna's long lost brother, Reef, shows up covered in blood, shortly after a woman has been murdered. He is arrested as the most logical suspect, and the evidence is unreal. It's up to Piper to prove his innocence. The twists and turns of this story will keep you on the edge of your seat, while the romance and the blossoming love will make you yearn to get to the ending (because of course, it's a happy one!). The message in this book is the same as in the first. God's love is all encompassing, and when a person REALLY, TRULY submits their lives, their hearts, their whole beings to God, they can change, no matter what they've done in the past.
I read this book in three days. THREE! That's how much I loved it. I wish the next book in the series (because there HAS to be another one) was out already! I need to know what happens between Darcy and Gage, Kayden and Jake, and then Reef! READ THIS BOOK! You won't regret it, I promise! ;)
**I was provided a free copy of this book by Bethany House Publishers for an honest review**
I read Submerged (book one in the Alaskan Courage series) last year and loved it, so I knew going in that Shattered was sure to be a treat... and it was fantastic! The mystery was very good and I seriously had no idea who the killer was or the reason for what was going on. I was surprised when everything was revealed, as it was such a great plot and I did not see it coming! Love when that happens. :)
After being introduced to Landon and Piper in book one, I could hardly wait to read their story and it was well worth the wait. All of the main characters were great, but Landon would have to be my favorite - probably because his feelings were just so real and I couldn't help cheering for him.
I found it particularly interesting to learn more about Gage and Reef - Piper's brothers. Kayden also intrigues me and I wonder what her story is... can't wait to read their books and find out! I loved the way the characters interacted with each other (especially the McKennas and Landon) - there were quite a few scenes I found very funny... I couldn't help but chuckle. :)
The romance in Shattered was soooooo sweet - it was great to see the characters grow closer and closer to each other. I also really liked the subplot romance story and that Cole and Bailey (the main characters from Submerged) were in Shattered a lot.
All in all, I loved Shattered! If you enjoy romantic suspense novels with some inspirational elements, then I think you will really like this book. I recommend reading Submerged first so you'll know the backstory.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
When it comes to mystery and suspense, this is a fantastic read!
When it comes to spiritual content, salvation moments are so clear (which is a biggie for me), spiritual discussion is steady and strong, and it is very good.
When it comes to sexual content... that's where my rating goes down (well, that and toward the end, it felt like she suddenly switched to info-dump and it didn't read as smoothly). The first book was sketchy with the romance/sexual content. This one had two almost-scenes with the whole "seduction" beforehand and then it continues with the whole intense physical attraction. I'm not sure I'm going to finish the series because of this content, even though the stories themselves are really great.
Landon and Piper are absolutely adorable together! Piper is sorta like me, which I find funny. Some sensitive matters were handled appropriately and delicately. The Christian message is wonderful in this book. I couldn't guess a lot of the twists which made it really intriguing. This is so like me: "This is so exciting," Piper whispered behind Landon as they crouched outside Tess's cabin door. He (Landon) shook his head as she disappeared down the dark hallway. No wonder he worried about her. What other woman got excited about breaking and entering?
ME! LOL! Not to say that I break into places, but to investigate, I'd totally do it!
Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for violence and romance Best for Ages: 15 and up
After reading the first book in this series, I dove right into the second. I now adore the entire McKenna family and how each of these books build on one another. The stories are connected, like they would be in real life.
Piper is probably one of my favorite McKennas, because she reminds me so much of my youngest sister as well. I was excited to be able to read her story and Landon’s. The two of them together, solving a mystery was perfection. Their romance was well balanced between physical attraction and getting to know each other.
The thing I love the best about Pettrey’s writing is the characters. While the mystery is sometimes a bit weak, the characters more than made for the shortcomings. They just leap off the page and compel me to keep reading.
I am really enjoying the series and cannot wait to get my hands on the next book
This was actually a 3.5 rounded up to 4 ⭐. I rather enjoy this series, despite the religious undertones as it works well for the series. My one gripe is that "god has a plan", but let's not get into that huge debate shall we? ;)
Landon and Piper continue to be a really interesting couple and there's plenty of tropes in this book I enjoyed.
This book has the trope "wrongly accused person (brother of main character) is accused of a murder her didn't commit" but I think it was a good way this was handled up on by throwing in assassin's,a kidnapping, and surviving the harsh elements of the Canadian wilderness. I liked the progression on Piper and Landon's relationship and the side characters all got a good spot to enjoy some of the spotlight. I'm going to re-read the first two books to write proper reviews, but so far really enjoying the series!
This book was even better than the first. Shattered is the right of amount of suspense with friends to more romance. When her prodigal brother returns and is arrested for murder it is up to Piper McKenna and Deputy Landon Grainger to prove his innocence.
SUMMARY: When her prodigal brother Reef's return to Yancey, Alaska, is shattered by his arrest for murder, Piper McKenna is determined to protect him.
Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he's also sworn to find the truth. And he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth puts Landon's career in jeopardy.
When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes he must protect her from herself--and whatever complications await as the two follow clues deep into Canada's rugged backcountry. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.
REVIEW: This second book in the Alaskan Courage series focusing on the McKenna family features Piper McKenna along with her sibling and their significant others. Strong in her beliefs, loyal to her family, and courageous almost to a fault, Piper is a determined, faith-filled character. Her siblings also are well-rounded, enjoyable characters. The characters remind me of Dee Henderson's O'Malley family. Pettrey even includes some characters you love to hate like Meredith who also appeared in book one.
Pettrey again keeps the plot moving at a good pace, keeping her reader riveted to follow the clues and determine what really happened. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, you will definitely want to read this series.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "Could God really fill the hole eating away inside of him? Could He give him the strength he needed.....Just like on the job, he needed evidence. Blind faith wasn't an option."
Piper McKenna loves her brother. So when he shows up on her doorstep covered in blood, she firmly believes he's innocent. Convincing Deputy Landon Grainger of that is something else entirely. Landon's trying to do his job, despite the fact that his boss is pushing for a quick conviction and that the evidence all points to Reef McKenna, brother of the woman Landon loves. When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes that he has to keep her safe from herself. Yet someone is determined to pin the murder on Reef and will stop at anything to see that justice isn't served. Will Landon and Piper be able to get to the truth before something else happens? And when will they admit their feelings?
I read the first book in this series, Submerged and loved it. The McKennas remind me of Dee Henderson's O'Malley family. Like those in the O'Malley series, this book stands alone. It is helpful to read the first in the series, but not necessary. Romance, suspense, and adventure all abound in this book. I loved that the characters are believable and they obviously love their family. There were very few things that I didn't enjoy about the book, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I'm hoping it will be about either Gage or Kayden.
I read this book for pure pleasure. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of romanitc suspense, Dee Henderson, Irene Hannon, O'Malley Series
After reading book one, Submerged, I couldn't wait to read the next book in the series and was excited when I got hold of a copy of Shattered.
Everything I loved about book 1 in the series continued in book 2. The suspense was great, lots of twists and turns that kept you fascinated and never knowing who the murderer is or why until the very end, and even then he didn't make it easy. The story was well thought out and well written.
I continued to love getting to know the McKenna family, especially to understand the history of Gage, I really felt compassion for him in this book and loved his interaction with Darcy. Also how the author threw in hints that there is more behind Jake.
I loved the relationship between Piper and Landon and loved to see how the relationship grew in book 2. I was however frustrated with these two not communicating their feelings and this is why I only give the book a 4 star rating instead of 5. The non-communicating factor in love stories is a huge personal frustration for me and a huge reason why I don't read pure romance.
Definitely a must read for all romantic suspense lovers!
*It has been a long time since I've read this one and I still love it! This time I listened to the audio version. Enjoyed it.
A wonderful combination of intrigue, danger and romance! Dani Pettrey's second novel in the Alaskan Courage series is not to be missed. Shattered continues the story of the McKenna family of Yancey, Alaska. Reef McKenna finds himself charged with murder and his sister, Piper, is determined to clear his name. Landon Grainger, family friend and deputy, is deeply in love with Piper and struggles to determine the right course of action. This story is full of action and a sweetly developed love that grows from friendship. I highly recommend Shattered and look forward to the upcoming release of the third book in the series, Stranded.
This was a well written and entertaining Christian suspense novel with a romantic subplot. I really liked the characters and the interesting plot twists along the way. I truly enjoyed it, and I look forward to reading more of the series. It has earned its place on my favorites' list. Note: I rather wish I'd reread the first book before reading this one though; I'd hoped I remembered enough of the first one to press on without doing so, but I should have known better. However, I wasn't too lost and would have been fine even if I'd never read the first book at all.
I read a later book in this series and now I'm going back to read all the books. Obviously not in chronological order, but I don't think it matters too much. I just really love this series and I'm so glad my library got them in ebook form! Yay! Suspense, fast moving plot, romantic tension. No swearing or sexual content. Some violence.
I did not actually like this book as much as I liked the first one. In fact, the first one is so much better and cleaner. Throughout this whole book, there were constant, CONSTANT mentions of adulterous acts and there were even a mention of something a little more. I eventually finished the book but was disappointed in what I read. Dani Pettrey was my favorite suspense author, but I'm just not feeling a connection to her books anymore. Though, she justified the acts at the end, the fact that they were in there made me upset. As a Christian, I strive to keep my thoughts and heart pure but when I read things like what I read in this book, it causes me to fall into the temptation of impure thoughts. Proverbs 4:23 clearly states "Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life." This verse, as well as the saying, “guard your heart”, ran through my head once I finished this book because most of the characters I read about, including the main character and the main victim needed to fix something within them in order to avoid the sin they kept falling into. I definitely want to avoid, in my life, becoming like our main victim. Overall, I would give this book 2 stars because while I enjoyed the suspense and romance the unecessary content wasnt really needed in a CHRISTIAN fiction novel.
