“A Rose by Any Other Name – Life Lessons from an Unremarkable Dog” follows the exploits of a typical family and the dogs that tolerated them. This touching memoir tells the story of the dogs that influenced the author’s formative years, his dog-less years and the eventual arrival of ‘Duchess Desert Rose’ – a half Lab, half Shepherd mix. ‘Rose’ is a story with a wide range – from the shores of the St. Lawrence River to the Mountains of Northern Mexico. Part autobiography, part training manual and part social commentary, “A Rose by Any Other Name” is pure entertainment.
David Gordon Burke writes books about Man's Best Friend. 'A Rose by Any Other Name - Life Lessons from an Unremarkable Dog' his debut non-fiction memoir is available for Kindle from Amazon.
David recently published his first novel - 'Lobo' about dogs lost in the streets of Monterrey, Mexico in the aftermath of Hurricane Alex.
David also writes tutorials, cookbooks and anything else that occurs to him. He resides in northern Mexioco with his wife and the famous mutt from his first book 'Duchess Desert Rose.'
I like this book. The author really knows how to tell a good story. A Rose by Any Other Name is often laugh out loud funny, sometimes sad, and always interesting.
But it is also a little strange in the way it builds up. Rose doesn't really enter the story until almost at the half way mark. Until then we get the story of all the other dogs that have been in the authors life up till that moment. The author does a good job with those stories, but one would expect that the dog which the book is named after would get center stage.
The other unusual thing about this book is that it is about, as the title suggests, an "unremarkable dog." I think it is more common that dog books either center on Lassie or Cujo kind of dogs. Okay, that is maybe going a little too far, but basically what I mean is they are about great or bad dogs. Rose is a good dog, but not great. She is just a family dog, and the stories of her and the other dogs are like those that many dog owners could tell.
What makes this book good is that it is written with clear affection for the subject. The author is a dog person, and one that really wants the best for dogs. And most importantly he has managed to write an entertaining dog book, not a flawless one, but one that is fun to read.
I got this book when it was free on Amazon, and after having read it I'm kind of ashamed for having gotten it without paying for it. The author wants to use the proceeds for dog welfare, and I wish him all the best with that.
A Rose by Any Other Name has a bit of everything about dogs. Clearly, dog lovers will enjoy the book and at 99 cents it's a good value. This is the story of a young boy and his family and the dogs that shared their home over the years. It also has quite a bit of useful information from a layman's point of view about dog training, health, nutrition and other dog issues. After the initial boyhood part of the story, the author moves to Mexico and I found myself enjoying the bits about life in Mexico almost as much as hearing the story of his current pup 'Rose.' It's a short book and I read it in just a few hours - I laughed out loud a many times and easily related to the author's views on the current state of affairs in the dog world. Likewise, as a dog owner I saw my family and childhood between the lines of this book. I gave my boyfriend the book and even though he has never had animals, he said he still enjoyed it. A good, fun read.
This strange little book made me laugh a lot and managed to jerk a few tears along the way as well. David Gordon Burke's love for dogs comes through on every page. A Rose by Any Other Name has something for everyone including layman's dog training and nutrition tips, some opinions and a lot of family history - it's a study of how our pet dogs give us so much. At only $0.99 it's a great value.
I borrowed this eBook from Kindle Unlimited. I love this book. It is about a man's life and the lives of his dogs. I love that someone can love their pets enough to write a book about them. I also loved all the stories I read about each one of them. A dog's love is unconditional and our love in return should be the same! Well done.
