His hostage...

In 1758 the Pennsylvania frontier is wild, primitive and dangerous, where safety often lies at the end of a gun. Mara Dupre's life crumbles when a French and Indian war party attacks her cabin, kills her husband, and takes her captive. Marching through the wilderness strengthens her resolve to flee, but she doesn't count on her captor teaching her the meaning of courage and the tempting call of desire.

Her destiny...

French lieutenant Jacques Corbeau's desire for his captive threatens what little honor he has left. But when Mara desperately offers herself to him in exchange for her freedom, he finds the strength to refuse and reclaims his lost self-respect. As the shadows of his past catch up to him, Jacques realizes that Mara, despite the odds, is the one true key to reclaiming his soul and banishing his past misdeeds forever.

Linda McLaughlin

Linda McLaughlin spent most of her childhood with her head in the proverbial clouds while dreaming of worlds long past or never created. An only child, she played in the attic with her imaginary friend Ricardo and his horse. (She's still not quite sure how Ricardo got the horse into the attic.) She still does not know why her second grade teacher didn't like her, unless it was for asking too many precocious questions.

Her fifth grade teacher said, "Linda has a mind of her own." That pronouncement caused momentary panic in the maternal bosom, but all turned out well. Despite her inattention in class during middle school--often because she was focused on the novel hidden in her lap instead of her textbook--Linda got motivated and graduated from high school, college and earned a Master's Degree in Library Science. She enjoyed library work as it fits her compulsively helpful nature. Now retired, she lives in Orange County, California.

A book junkie and history buff from an early age, she enjoyed listening to her grandmother's stories of life in the past, including how her ancestors lived in a log cabin and fought in the Civil War. So it's only natural she prefers writing historical romance. She loves transporting her readers into the past where her characters learn that, in the journey of life, love is the sweetest reward.

She also writes erotic romance under the name Lyndi Lamont, and is one half of the writing team of Lyn O'Farrell.

This was one of 10 books in a Romance Super Bundle. I don't typically choose books set in the past, so this one was a change for me. It was pretty interesting and professionally and skillfully written.

I was pleasantly surprised to have liked this book as much as I did. I've never read anything by Linda McLaughlin before so I didn't have any expectations but I do believe I've found another author I will be reading more frequently.

The story was well thought out, well crafted, the characters were believable and developed with research. I could tell the author tried to stay true to the time and place without killing the reader with the horrific details of war. I'm sure that was not an easy goal to accomplish.

I'm sure some people will find Mara, the heroine of this story, unbelievable. However, I can attest to the conflict that goes on in a minister's daughter's mind when trying to reconcile the set of beliefs that were taught and the expectations that were demanded with what the world throws at woman once she has moved from the naive shelter of the minister's home. I could identify with Mara's inner struggle. Although every person alive deals with their "inner demons" Mara's we're much like my own. That is the reason this sweet love story will remain as one that is near and dear to my heart.

The setting is ok, French-Indian War in America but the story lacks bones to hang a plot on; sex and desire is not enough. I read 30-35% then gave up and skipped to the last chapter. Too bad. It could have been so much better.

Good job with the 18th century French-British wars culminating with the Plains of Abraham. A hostage drama with the nitensity of a love story. Well done.
