I believe Author Emily Klepp has found her winning formula for her dark and most times both emotionally and physically brutal storytelling romances, thus why warnings and trigger listing's are heavily acknowledged to readers. The journey that this title, "Dark Prey" will take, is like all her other books I have read where you will be challenged by how society acknowledges victims/ survivors of brutal and sexually based crimes but most importantly demonstrate their inner demons and resiliency to overcome their horrific experience. But most importantly find their version of a HEA that is most deserving.
The characters created are truly heart rendering and certainly the lead female, Elizabeth and Carson, her boss for years were simply divine, but even the secondary ones of Stephanie (best friend) and Marcus (friend of Carson's) were equally tangible and pivotal to the overall plot.
I will admit this was a read that is not quite easy and quick to consume heavily due to the high emotional states that the reader is taken on, even in the last 10% of the story I had to walk off to 'reset' my own mindset. I believe at that point I had worked out a culprit but was curious as to what new dark avenue I was going to be lead onto.
I often question my own values at reading this genre but realise there is so much hidden in this type of plot that demonstrates the true inner strength of the human pysche and physical body but also demonstrates the power of support that others can provide to produce a successful outcome.
An interesting plot with real life scenarios and issues, well created characters, twists and turns, betrayals, mind games and manipulations, power plays and the good verses bad concept.
My one real piece of advice is to thread carefully as the story will create a sense of provocation and challenge and perhaps a better outcome where society can view survivors of abuse without the mental stigma that seems to come with it.
