The book is a comprehensive survey of 25 military encounters, battles, wars and sieges that determined the course of Croatian history and shaped the character, and geographic shape, of the modern state of Croatia. In their long and turbulent history, the Croats fought every major and aspiring power that set its foot on Croatian soil. The Croats also fought among themselves in internecine struggles for ideological supremacy. Numerically inferior to every invader bent on subduing them, they had to rely on bravery and sheer fanaticism to maintain their place on the political map of Europe. Every generation of Croats was called upon to display feats of valour or perish. Croatian independence, finally won in 1995, serves as a monument to them all.
