Like the rest, this was a good police procedural with many of the same recurring characters following Detective Jackson, a decent detective who is trying to keep Eugene, Oregon safe by solving murder mysteries. He has some issues to deal with: health, an alcoholic ex-wife, a young teenaged daughter, & the normal work problems. They're well narrated & the rampant overall liberal tone is only mildly irritating.

What set this book apart was the fantastic way the effects of a downturn of the economy are brought to light. We all know how tough financial problems can be & have seen how good people can go wrong when money is involved, but the way it, along with mounting minor irritations, can snowball is a wonderfully drawn train wreck. Toss in the incomplete the police have to deal with & it's a great mystery with a very strong ending. There's certainly a lead in to another book, but this one wraps up the central mystery completely.

Verdächtige gibt es also einige.

Setting: Eugene, Oregon, USA; modern day.
In this fourth book in the crime series featuring Detective Wade Jackson, having recently returned to duty after a serious knife injury acquired in the line of duty, Jackson immediately finds himself tasked with solving the brutal slaughter of a couple and their teenage son in their own home, with their teenage daughter barely surviving serious knife wounds.
With the daughter firstly in a coma and then suffering from traumatic amnesia, Jackson and his team must dig into the family's lives to try to identify the culprit. Several possible motives are revealed in the course of their enquiries, suggesting a number of different potential murderers. At the same time, Jackson is suffering pain from his injury, worrying about potential redundancy as the city are having to cut back on detectives and distracted by his new relationship and pressures from his alcoholic ex-wife.....
This was a totally gripping read, very hard to put down as the investigation exposed many alternative motives for the murders.
I worked out who I thought the culprit was but was quite surprised, given my previous track record, to find that I was actually correct(!) but in no way did this detract from my enjoyment and the anticipation of reading more from this series - 9/10.

Great Series..

This is another great book by this seller. A family is murdered. Detective Jackson is assigned to the case. There are several suspects for the Detective to investigate. There is a great twist at the end.

I hope L.J. Sellers continues this series. I am hooked on her books.

A decent police procedural dealing with a multiple family murder - there are twists and turns of plot as different suspects are considered - but a pretty basic mistake flaws the narrative for me, only being discovered right at the end.

Book 4 opens with a gruesome scene & the author puts us right in the middle of it with Detective Jackson investigating. We get an insight into the small town’s troubles with layoffs, struggling families & short staffing of the police department. This book has flashbacks so we also get the insight into what was happening in the lives of our new characters. Just when you think you have it figured out, you realize you don’t. Again, an amazing read!

If you were a fan of the television show Law and Order, I think you will like the Detective Jackson series by L.J. Sellers. There is absolutely nothing cute or warm here - no heroics or trumped-up drama - just a normal cop with problems trying to make his life work while investigating homicides in Eugene, Oregon. Everything that happens to these people - both the cops and other characters - feels very real. There are no super-villains or terrorists or zombies. Instead, small problems or flaws in character snowball into tragic or terrible incidents. I find that sometimes after reading the fantasy world I dwell in for most of my reading experiences, it's sometimes good to come back to the mixed-up problems of our everyday existence in the 21st century.
Not for too long, though - no one is happy in these stories, and it can be a little depressing to listen to their f'd up lives.

I really enjoyed this book. It didn't hurt that it is set in my hometown either. However, it is not for the faint of heart, as it is pretty graphic. I guess that is too be expected from a crime novel. The characters were well-developed and I felt sympathy/empathy for their problems. L.J. Sellers's books are a quick read and I already picked up the next Detective Jackson book. It is the last in the series for now, so I hope she keeps them coming! Thanks Mom for the suggestion to read these.

This is the 4th book in the Detective Jackson series, all set in Eugene, OR. I found out about this series a few years ago and got started on it due to it taking place in Eugene. And it has a certain charm as the book navigates through well-known streets and settings. But by the third book I valued it as a very good police procedural. It's not necessarily a whodunit, nor is it primarily a thriller. But it has elements of both, an apparently solid understanding of police techniques, and good insights into the political and cultural currents of Eugene. It also has great long-arc character development.

Book 4 takes place in 2009, and we see the effect of the recession on Eugene city government, and the wider population with increased crime resulting from meth and opiates, alcohol, and joblessness.

From reading this series I have a much better appreciation for small-town policing. It's not unsophisticated, but it's different from most of the detective novels I read that are set in NY City, London, Moscow (or Laos). Who knew that Eugene had a SWAT team? But they make an appearance in book 4 due to a home invasion in southwest Eugene (off City View). And where else would you find a line like "Officer down on the Peter DeFazio bridge!"...

The author seems like a genuine Eugene personality: she's an award-winning journalist, a cyclist, and does stand-up comedy.

I recommend the entire series, but I felt it really emerged as a strong detective series in its own right by book 3 (Thrilled to Death). As of now there are 12 books in the series so it's something you can sink your teeth into.

Highly recommended! (Note to English majors: This is not literature... but it's a good read!)

An intriguing series

This was a complex, intense, and heartbreaking story with many unexpected twists that will keep you guessing until the end. A great read.
There are many things that I enjoy about reading the longer series like getting to know the characters more, how the relationships between them develop, and so much more. However, one of the few things that I don't like is when a series starts off with a present tense, but then one or more of the following books will revert back to the past. The first book in this series was great, I expected this book to continue from that, but instead it was a story that happened prior to the time frame of the first book. There were several things that happened in the first book that I had no idea would end up being spoilers in this story. I'm really hoping that this isn't an indication of what to expect throughout this series.
Also, unlike the first book, this one had many editing errors. The most major one was a little confusing as it seemed to refer to the Captain as a male and a female, sometimes from one paragraph to the next. In the first book this character was a female. There were some other minor issues, but nothing that caused any reading problems. Overall, it was a great story, but I hope that the time frames will stay consistent throughout the rest of the series.
I would recommend this book, series, and author.

PASSIONS OF THE DEAD by L J Sellers. "Detective Jackson Mystery" #4
Where does one begin to describe Sellers book, they are great plots, good description of the characters, and what is going on. Think Law and Order type, without gory details. Love the personal side with .Wade, and his daughter Katie, and a new love with Kera. His job, worry rather he will be laid off, his ex is wanting him to sell, or monthly payments, since she is out of work. Readers will enjoy her books, and this good series.

This sees Detective Jackson overseeing a triple homicide with another casualty critically wounded in hospital. Whilst the plot twists and turns, wade Jackson is fearful of whether he'll have a job at the end of the month. None of the team are any the wiser with who's done it and pc Evans suddenly realises she fancies the boss!! Another fairly fast paced police drama - no nasty or dark text to worry about.

Wow Just wow

What an amazing author. I loved the book. I didn't see it coming about who killed the family but I don't want to spoil it. The stuff drugs will make you do and what a person addicted has to go through is sad.

Enjoyable

I just like the writing of this novel and the twist was great.
You could feel for all the characters and the police were not made out as violent thugs
Loved it thank you

Just finished this excellent book.

LJ really knows how to tell a great story populated with characters that are well rounded, realistic, and multi-dimensional.

I've now read the first four in this series and would love to say that this is the best, but the truth is that they're all excellent. Every one of them.

In this installment LJ kicks-off with a gripping multiple murder. It's a superbly crafted start to a novel that sucks the reader in. The pace hardly lets up from that point, right through to one of the most riveting endings I've ever read.

I was about 90% of the way through the book when the clock struck midnight, and as much as I wanted to get to sleep as I had an early start the next morning, I couldn't put the darned thing down. I managed to pull myself away during that last 10% and turned out the light, but five minutes later I just had to turn it back on again and get to the end. If you've read it yourself I'm sure you'll know just what I mean.

For anyone who hasn't read any of this series I'd definitely recommend it wholeheartedly, but I'd start off with the first in the series if you want to gain maximum enjoyment, as the characters develop beautifully from book to book.

And the great news is that there is now a fifth installment to the series, so guess what I'll be reading next.

Not brain surgery, not a walk in the park. A nice little fast paced whodunit.

The characters are okay and you enjoy riding along with them. The story line, another social issue but not too preachy, made sense and was easy to follow. And, no, I didn't figure out whodunit.

On the other side, I guess I'd call the series young adult whodunits, since I have no idea what the various definitions of book genres are, I can call it anything I want, so if you need more grit, grisly details and torrid sex, you're gonna have to read something else.

It seems many of the authors these days need a flawed cop, with a kid he/she's over protective of, a shaky love life, a glint in another's eye, a detective who has seen too much, kids who haven't grown up.....

The characters are too often one sided, almost stereotypical. An example is one of the characters who naively thinks if you just run away to Maui, where it's warm and you don't need a car, everything will be alright and you can start over and no one will find you.

But they will.

It's a nice break from something far more meatier

Passions of the Dead, by L. J. Sellers, b-plus, Narrated by Patrick Lawlor, Produced by Brilliance Audio, downloaded from audible.com.

This book comes before “Dying for Justice”, the one I just reviewed. In this one, Jackson is faced with Eugene’s worst massacre-an entire family, mother and father and brother and sister, are stabbed. The parents are hit first with a baseball bat, and the mother’s hand is severed. Only the daughter, Laurie, survives. But she is in a coma and when she recovers from that, she has no memory of the events. There are a plethora of suspects, and Jackson is under pressure to solve the case as soon as possible. Also, it has been announced that there will be the cut of one position in the investigative crimes unit, and Jackson is afraid it will be him. Very good as usual.

L.J. Sellers has totally roped me into this series about Wade Jackson. This is the fifth book in the series and as each book moves on, I have become more entranced with Wade Jackson and his detectives as they solve one horrible crime after another. I even have to admit that in each case I had to follow the story to the conclusion...just to find out who committed the heinous acts. The books also include the personal life of Jackson, with all of his angst and worries about his daughter, health, and monies. I like his girlfriend Kera, but I am worried that Jackson is going to draw away from her.

By the way - I can not wait for the next book in the series....which comes out on the 15th of January.

I don't write many reviews because I'm really bad at it. However, I must write a few words about the Detective Jackson series. Passions of the Dead is #4 in the series and each progressive book has gotten better and better, something I thought wasn't possible. The twists, the turns, all part of an amazing plot.

I had pretty much stopped rating books 5-star, except for a couple of my favorite authors, John Hart and Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb. Congratulations, Ms. Sellers!! You've entered my 5-star rated authors. As another reviewer said, it's difficult to understand why you haven't hit the big time.

This being my fourth L.J. Sellers crime novel, I have become a huge fan. She writes in a way that keeps me spellbound. The resolution of this whodunit left me a bit skeptical, but that's probably because I never saw it coming... Sellers' story-telling gift resides in the lead-up, not so much in the cleverness of the endings. Still, I rated this one 5* because I was thoroughly entertained and, after all, that is my preeminent goal in reading this genre of literature.

I also appreciate that Sellers' works are available to me as an Amazon Prime member. I will definitely be ordering the next installment in the Wade Jackson series.
