Environmental issues are never far from the headlines, with real life stories like the Greenpeace protest in the Russian polar region. James North now brings us an excellent thriller, which has our environment central to the storyline, is combined with corruption, greed and of course Deep Deception. Caroline Dupre's husband, the head of a worldwide organisation he founded, is killed during a climate change protest in Kuala Lumpur. Is it just over zealous police efforts in crowd control or is it something more sinister? This is the start of a challenge for Caroline to find out who and why her husband Francoise was killed. Pulled into a clandestine world surrounding climate change and it supporters and detractors. Can she find out what exactly happened without endangering herself and son Nicolas?

This is a very fast moving entertaining thriller, highlighting some of today's real issues but with some fantasy attached. I would recommend this to anyone who likes thrillers.

Getting lost in the crowds!
This was a very enjoyable read which lured me in. The pace throughout is excellent, and the topic is one which is very believable in this contemporary world. The lives of the most senior members of organisations who attempt to combat global warming and ecological issues may well be under many different sorts of threats on a daily basis but the public will only hear about them if serious enough to hit the main headlines, or if a situation is exposed as a political disaster. The plot was intriguing with plenty of political machinations to entertain along the way. The character of Caroline Dupre is well rounded- she’s a lady of many talents who can keep her head in difficult circumstances. Other characters are less likeable, the villains of the piece. However, I really liked the way James North has imbued some shreds of conscience into the hit-men dedicated to duty and into the pursuit of financial gain regardless of the task involved.

Having first read and been impressed by the sequel, The Last Chameleon, I was suspicious but also interested in reading the first book in the series. Firstly I wanted to fill in any blanks in a characters back story but also to see if the author's style was different and perhaps not as good as the follow up novel. A fault that often happens as an author develops their own style.
With Deep Deception I found a great story and it explained the genesis of the central character. She could go on to be the female Bourne as she is such a complex and interesting creation.
I will not give away too much of the plot but I will say that the author, James North, has a natural talent for developing a tight and gripping plot whilst all the time cranking up the tension and suspense. It dragged me into the story and didn't want to let me go.
So roll on volume 3 of the Vanguard novels, this is one series of stories I want to keep on following.

The magnetic quality of James North's writing is aptly demonstrated by the first two installments of his Vanguard series, Deep Deception and The Last Chameleon. In these gripping, page-turning novels the author manages to keep his audience on the edge of their seats as he weaves his intricate tales, making them reads that are difficult to put down. The unpredictable quality of the stories makes them fun to read as well, and the female lead character is nothing short of Bond-esque in her approach to her work. All these elements combined with the smart, well-crafted visuals and descriptions make these novels film-worthy. I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys a good thrill ride. Can't wait for the slippery shenanigans in the author's upcoming third book in the series, Black Ice!

James North hits all the right notes with his new series that introduces us to Caroline Dupré, a new heroine for global warming who takes the reader on a journey of suspense when her husband is assassinated by a shadowy organization with ties to big oil. Who has been suppressing the truth about climate change? Who is behind the conspiracy that targeted Caroline's husband, a noted Global Warming Activist? Can the earth finally be saved? These answers and more will keep you at the edge of your seat in this classy, stylish thriller.

I enjoyed this novel very much. It begins with excitement that rises throughout the story up to the final climax. I'm not sure Caroline Dupré would have been able to hold her own against professional killers in real life, but that's what makes this fictional story so powerful. The background of climate change is very real and I have no trouble believing that many politicians and officials were corrupt enough to accept the bribes they were offered.

This is a well-constructed, page-turning thriller.
