The Dragon Who Couldn't Breathe Fire

Rate this book
For young children, growing up can seem to take forever. But, like butterflies must first be caterpillars, becoming a big boy or girl doesn’t happen overnight.
In this funny rhyming story for children aged 3 to 7 years old, children will laugh at the illustrations and the extremes that our little dragon friend goes to, as he tries to breathe fire for the first time. After trying so hard with no luck at all, he meets a wise owl who tells him that his Mom has all the answers.
This humorous story was created with the intention of helping young children to understand that life is magic. But, just like real magic, you never really know when it will happen!

The story centers around a little dragon ready to grow up and compete against his big brothers.

He wants to breathe fire like his big brothers, but he can’t on his own. He tries and tries. He uses everything he knows about fire to try to breathe it. He’s not having much luck with his fire breathing, a little owl redirects him to the one person who knows how to get the little dragon what he needs.

The little dragon trots back home. His dragon mom explains that the magic of fire breathing will come when he’s ready for it. You just can’t push the magic of growing up.

A great book with cute and funny illustrations to add to the story of the little dragon’s tale of growing up.

Children's Book: The Dragon Who Couldn't Breathe Fire (funny bedtime story collection)
Colorful illustrated children's book about a dragon. He is not able to breathe fire like his brothers and he knows it's important.
He tries to figure out how to make the fire and fails. An owl tells him some hints. His mother tells him magic can't happen right away, give it some time.

The Dragon Who Couldn't Breathe Fire is a picture book by Yonit Werber, and illustrated by Bhangga Santoso. The book is about a young dragon, who sees all the fun the other dragons are having, when they use fire. However, whenever this dragon tries to do the same, all it breathes out is smoke. So it tries to use other methods of fire, to help the process along. The story is told in rhymes.

My first critique is that I feel like there should be a warning in the book for kids and parents, informing them not to play with fire. Because, in theory, a kid might see the character in this book playing with fire, and want to try something like that for themselves. So, parents/ guardians (, etc), please have a talk with any kid(s) you read this to, and make sure they understand that fire can be dangerous.

I like the idea of the book, and I can understand the theme. The theme is that it takes a little time for bodies to grow into certain things, in this case breathing fire. The point of it being is that it can take time to grow up and do the same things that adults do. The story does make a reasonable amount of sense, and I think there are definitely some good characters. I do kind of wish there had been more to the story; in my opinion, it just felt a little short and I would have liked to see more to the story.

I love, love, love so many of the illustrations. There’s some really good stuff that any kid would be excited about. In the opening of the story, there’s a great scene with a two headed dragon, breathing fire. I love seeing these drawings, because each of the characters look so cool! The artist has done excellent work, and I’m really impressed!

Overall, the story was okay, but the best part of the book was definitely the illustrations!

The little dragon wasn’t sure how to breath fire/flames.
He tried to help the campers start their campfire.
He asked his mom what he was doing wrong.
Weeks flew by & the dragon flew to play with a friend.

What happened then?

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn black & white or colored pictures, charming illustrations & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children’s (preschool/elementary age) dragon storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children’s dragon movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

Being Little

Here is a wonderful story about coming of age. Little dinosaur sees what his brothers can do and he wants to do it himself. His brothers make fun of him and call him baby. Hurtful words, coming from family, can be the worst. The illustrations are bright, lively, and complement the story completely. I highly recommend this book. I am new to this author, Yonit Werber, and wonder why have I not found her before this. Her stories are excellent and I will be back for more, as I am sure you will also.
Little Dragon wants to breathe fire. He wants to breathe fire like his brother. He tries many ways. Get ready to laugh and smile.

“The Dragon Who Couldn’t Breathe Fire” is a children’s storybook written by Yonit Werber that teaches children the value of patience and asking for help.

The story is about a little dragon who is ready to grow up and breathe fire like his big brothers. He tries everything he can think of to breathe fire. Try as he might, he just can’t do it on his own. A wise owl is a witness to the little dragon’s trouble tells him to go to the one person who can help…his mom.

The little dragon’s mom explains to him that the magic of fire breathing will happen in its own time. He just needs to be patient. Will the little dragon ever be able to breathe fire like his brothers?

The story shares a beautiful message about growing up. The little dragon tries over and over again to breathe fire and never gives up trying. Your little one will learn that it’s okay to try to do something and have it fail. As parents it is important for us to remember to let our little ones try and succeed or possibly fail. It’s all part of growing up.

Your little one will also learn that it’s important to ask for help. Hungry for independence little ones will often struggle to complete a task and when it can’t be done breakdown in tears and frustration. Parents are often too quick to jump in and help when they see their children struggle. It’s important that we remember to allow our children to recognize when they need help and learn to ask for it. This is a skill that even adults struggle to learn.

The ultimate lesson that the story shares is that you can not rush “growing-up”. The little dragon learns that the magic of fire will happen with time, patience is the key.

The story is written in rhyme and can young readers can easily read. I found there are a few places where it doesn’t quite ‘roll off my tongue’ as smoothly as I would like, but it is still very enjoyable to read.

I did struggle with formatting issues, but I feel this is due to the app I am using on my tablet to read it.

The illustrator, Bhangga Santoso, has created brightly coloured illustrations that little ones will love to look at over and over. The author, Yonit Werber, also offers a free creative kit when you sign up for her newsletter. My kids enjoyed colouring images of the little dragon family and glued them to popsicle sticks to make puppets to tell their own stories.

“The Dragon Who Couldn’t Breathe Fire” is a fun story with a meaningful message about growing up that children will enjoy reading over and over.

I really liked this book

It was really good because it had emotions in the book.
In the book my favorite part is when the Dragon gets fire out of his mouth.
I did not like that it was really kiddy.
