I've read many Erica Ridley stories before, but Kissed by Magic is my first time reading her non-historical stuff. My take on it is... mixed.
I was surprised at the fact that we actually got some steam in the story, as Erica Ridley's historical romances are usually really tame. The world-building was very abbreviated, and I really needed more, but the story was so cute that I didn't mind.
Kissed by Magic was an easy cute read to start off the Magic & Mayhem series.

I absolutely loved this!
This was so cute, and funny, and "AWWWW" inducing that i just want to re-read it all over again!!
The characters were completely likable! And the plot was GOOD!!

When you are in the mood for a light and lovely fantasy romance this should be the one you choose.
Lance from modern times is an adventurer and when he goes to Castle purportedly housing the great treasure, he finds an unexpected situation that might be the end for him.
Lovely special moments are shared that make Lance come to heroic life for me as well as Princess Marigold.
Love reading this book. It was a joy.

I'd forgotten I don't read Erica Ridley's fantasy stories for a reason. There's world building and there's undisciplined story-telling that I associate with desperately making up a bedtime story for my children. Even they called me out on some of my more preposterous inventions - I could have lent them to Erica Ridley, if only I'd known.
I like her Regency stories better.

Funny historical romantic comedy!
Lance needs money. Fast. His idea, break into the castle on top of the mountain and steal its treasure.
Marigold has been trapped inside the castle for 600 years. In a cruel version of Groundhog Day her 19th birthday repeats over and over.
As soon as Lance enters the castle he's doomed. He can't get out, unless he can lift the curse that keeps him and Marigold trapped inside the walls of ice.

I didn’t know what to expect from this book as I only know Mrs Erica Ridley for her regency romances.
But when I learned some of her earlier books will be back for sale, I jumped on the opportunity.
I would label this read as a time travel fantasy romance as a princess from a fairy tale meets her knight disguised a treasure hunter adventurer, when Rapunzel meets Indiana Jones.
Impossible to tell more than the blurb without spoiling the read.
This huit-clos was charming, full of smiles and cheerful moments but also with some sadness.
Marigold is a nice woman, she grew up the hard way and left her spoiled days far behind when she had to recreated herself and learn from her errors. Lance is the perfect hero, he is thoughtful and caring, ready to do anything to free her, even let her go.
Their encounter is the meeting of past and present with the awkwardness it can create, but it was handled with a lot of fun and candy crush levels.
A fast paced novella with a bit of magic, the perfect balance between humor and sorrow and filled by love.

Lance Desmond is a wanted man. Ivan Radko, his arch-enemy as placed a 10,000 silver drachma on his head after Lance got his hands on some diamonds Radko had been hired to find, and promptly spent them on a pirate ship which isn't even his yet.
Out of options, he remember Castle Cavanaugh, which harbours inside it the mythical Golden Bloom of Eternal Youth. Problem is, Castle Cavanaugh is so cursed as to be unbreachable, surrounded by impenetrable cold.
Princess Marigold has been trapped within Castle Cavanaugh since medieval times, so she's a bit startled when Lance is not distraught by the news that he is now trapped with her:
“No treasure,” he repeated as if it were all a grand jest. “No magic mushrooms, not even a gold coin. But hey. I found the princess in the very first castle.”
But Lance needs to hurry, for if he does not manage to escape the castle before midnight he will join the many figurines adorning the great evergreen in the parlour...
Lance was extremely funny. For instance, he had on an enchanted necklace, supposed to bind him to that which he loved the most... and he believed it had bound him to just that:
"“I tried to fight it, but . . .” He heaved a great sigh, as if about to impart a shocking confession. “Here’s the thing. I’m addicted to Candy Crush.”"
And not only is Lance funny, his heart is in the right place:
“My best friend gave it to me,” he said simply, his eyes sad but firm. “Just because it’s not magical, doesn’t mean it’s worthless.”
Marigold was also a compelling character: a spoiled princess - the only daughter of a King and Queen who had lost hope of ever having a child - she suddenly found herself alone and trapped within her castle for many, many centuries. So she read, and she learned how to fight, and how to paint, and to become her own person.
I loved how their relationship was developed and how they fought to break the curse.
All in all, this was a very cute story!

This is my first Erica Ridley book; and I must admit I wasn’t 100% sure whether I would like it when I initially read the synopsis, but it was such an unusual and charming read, it was impossible not to like it. I love a book that is well written and offers the reader a chance to escape from their everyday life, and Let it Snow did that for me. I was pulled in and positively submerged in this great fairytale for adults, being that it was permanently Christmas was an added bonus!
Lance starts out as a bit of a Cad, and on learning he has currently got a bounty on his head, decides to go off and retrieve the riches that he believes are inside the Castle Cavanaugh, rumor has it that those who enter the Castle are never seen or heard of again, and once inside can never leave…..
Princess Marigold has been trapped inside the castle, permanently decorated for Christmas for over half a century, mainly on her own because of a curse, which strikes anyone who enters if they are still inside at Midnight. Marigold makes Lance want to be a better person, and although she knows that their time together is limited due to the curse, cannot help the feelings that she has for him developing.
This was a really unusual and enjoyable read. Not too long, but well written. I loved the cross-over between past and present, and seeing that it isn’t too long (I read it in an evening) well worth a couple of hours of your time.

Whew. So, I'm a little behind in some of my ARCs...by a year...or two. But! In my defense I entered this really long slump and when I went back through my Kindle I found a decent amount of ARCs that never got read.
Having said that, I'm finally here to write my review for this book! Going in I really didn't know what to expect I barely read the blurb but it sounded cute.
And boy oh boy, was it! I loved the mix magic and modern technology. Just for the comment alone about no one buying spellbooks anymore because you could get them on your phone had me rolling! It was perfect. Still medieval but not. I mean, until you get to the cursed castle housing a 600 something old woman...young woman.
Lance, our brave knight in shining armor, went to the castle in the search of hidden treasure to pay the bounty on his head. Only to find Princess Marigold instead, who has been trapped in the castle reliving the same day over and over again for centuries. The kicker is, now he's trapped too.
All in all, this was a quick cute read. I'm never a fan of explicit love scenes and prefer books without them (reminding everyone that I didn't know it was this kind of book going in). The romance moves to quickly (them only knowing each other for two(?) days). But, this isn't the kind of book you nit pick, just enjoy.
The writing was well down, everything flowed smoothly. There was the constant mystery of how they were going to break the curse and the enjoyment of Marigold discovery modern technology. Cute, like I said, and fun to read.

Let it snow by Erica Ridley is a 2013 Intrepid publication. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Lance has a bounty over his head. To retrieve a fortune he attempts to break into a castle of ice. But, once inside he finds himself trapped with the beautiful Marigold. But, an ancient curse could cause Lance to become on more ornament on the Christmas tree at the stroke of midnight. Can Lance and Marigold break the curse and escape the castle?
This is a Christmas themed novella with a lot of vivid imagination and certainly outside the box. It was a quick enjoyable Christmas time fantasy.
Overall a C+

Lance is in over his head in debt, and his only hope is to raid a castle for treasure. The only problem is, once he goes in, he will never come out.

This is a light, fantasy romance, following Lance. He's an adventurer and a chancer, and has a price on his head. After buying the ship of his dreams, he's in a lot of debt, but he plans to clear it by heading to a castle that might harbour a magical item the imbues eternal youth.
Once there, he finds the castle is almost empty, except for a strange princess.
After a curse was placed on her, Princess Marigold has been trapped in the castle for hundreds of years. She has tried everything to escape, and knows that nothing will work. When Lance breaks into the castle, she knows that she will only have a few hours with this handsome adventurer, before he is also taken from her.
This was light and fun. The romance between Lance and Marigold was really quite sweet, and I was rooting for them both to escape the cursed castle.
This was a reasonably short read, and made for a pleasantly light and fluffy distraction.
The fantasy aspect was... unsatisfactory.
We start with Lance, who is obsessed with his new ship and is having trouble with wanted posters etc, and it all feels very typical pre-technology-standard-fantasy-realm. Then it's smushed into a version of the modern world, with phones, apps and Candy Crush.
This is cute, but there was never any solid foundation or world building. It felt like the author went with whatever suited the story at the time.
It was the same when Lance got into the castle, and there's a bit of a culture difference between him and the princess. The difference was ignored when it didn't suit, and there were sections that were so completely anachronistic that I had to ignore them to continue.

I'm finding myself liking Christmas more and more these days. Or maybe it's because I've read lots of Christmas stories lately. Hmmm...
Still, I can now openly admit that no other Christmas story can compare to those written by the one and only Erica Ridley. Either the woman was blessed by the spirit of Christmas itself, or she's Mrs. Claus in disguise out to bring some holiday cheer to readers. Whichever it is, I must say her books are sure to be re-read in the future.
Lance Desmond is many things. A free man. An adventurer. And a man who's... wanted - dead or alive. So, what's a fellow to do when he needs to save his own hide? Why, he goes after a mythical cursed treasure, of course! Only, this particular treasure isn't what he expected. And while being stuck in the same castle as beautiful Princess Marigold does have its perks, Lance doesn't intend to stay caged for the rest of his life inside four walls. Now it's up to this reckless man to wisen up and use all his wits to break Castle Cavanaugh's curse - and free the Golden Bloom of Eternal Youth forever.
Erica Ridley seems to be a master of fun, fairytale-like atmosphere. And couples that compliment each other. Personally, when it came to this book's couple, I was reminded of these two:
And let me tell you, they're my favorite Disney couple! (I wonder how Lance would feel about that?)
Anyway, they were fantastic! Funny, quirky, and couldn't make me bored even if they tried. Plus, they show character development - how cool is that, huh?! Marigold was a spoilt little girl, who grew up to be an amazing, strong-willed, intelligent woman. And Lance decided to become a little more serious and adult-like - in other words, the guy of this unusual relationship - once he realized their freedom was at stake.
See what a nice, good ol' curse and some pressure can do to people?
What made this story weird was Lance's lines in some dialogues. As a geek, I had no problem keeping up with him, but to anyone else who isn't on the same level, Lance can seem like a walking encyclopedia of all that is geeky and weird. However, I can't ignore the fact that he has a certain way with words - not exactly smooth, but, heck, I give the guy some serious credit on originality!
Having already read Midwinter Magic , I found Mrs. Ridley's humor to be very close to my personal taste. Still, she managed to shock me. This book, though written by her as well, seemed different. It's like she changed her way of "showing", yet maintained her own voice and hilariousness - which was a major bonus, if you ask me. Show me a writer that can change tactics and keep their style, and tell me that actually bored you - I dare you!
As you can guess, you can't - no one can. And this is why this bookworm here is officially a fan girl - yes, Erica, you have a fan in me! Because keeping your readers interested and on their toes is what distinguishes a good writer from what I like to call, a "Keeper".

When explorer Lance Desmond is able to break into the mysterious and enchanted Castle Cavanaugh he discovers that the ancient curse that entraps it might just be more than he bargained for. Instead of a wealth of treasure he finds Princess Marigold who has been stuck in the castle for over 600 years. Yikes. Together they must put their heads together and try and find a solution to the curse...and maybe even find love in the process.
This was a short, cute, story full of romance, magic, and mystery. I loved the scenario of the magical castle and how the princess was trapped for years upon years. The character growth was good too, even though it was such a short story. The only thing that threw me off was the historical aspect of it. The castle was set in medieval times, but I had a hard time figuring out what time period Lance was from. He had a friend who owned a potions store yet he played candy crush on a cell phone? I was a bit confused over things like this and it drew me out of the story a little.
But other than that it was a fun and sweet story, perfect to read during the holiday season

This was an "instafreebie" so I didn't really know if I'd like it. I must admit that when I first began reading I was sure that I wouldn't enjoy it at all. I'm glad I read this book as it actually was quite entertaining. I couldn't stop reading as I wanted to find out if he would save the Princess and how he did it when the castle was made of impenetrable ice. I loved the ending so I recommend it to other readers.

Kissed by Magic is the first book in the Passion & Promises series by Erica Ridley. It can easily be read as a standalone.
What a fabulous novella this was. An absolute fantasy with a wonderful mix of modern times, olden times, modern technology and centuries-old magic and curses. Not forgetting, of course, the brilliant romance!
Lance Desmond has got himself in a pickle, he's on the wrong side of a very powerful man and his life is very much in danger. He needs money and he needs it quickly. In his desperation, he decides to try to break into a supposedly cursed castle. Somewhere inside it is a flower of eternal youth that will be worth millions if only he can find it. The problem is, the castle is encased in ice and nobody has ever been able to make it through it. Lance decides that as it's his best option, he's going to attempt to be the one who manages it.
Surprisingly, when he does make it in, he can't make it out again. He is trapped inside, and he isn't alone. He is with a beautiful medieval princess who has been trapped in the castle for centuries. He is determined to get out of the castle and take the princess with him and doesn't listen to her when she tries to explain to him that he is wasting his time. He doesn't realise that his time is limited, but the princess does and she is determined to make the most of their time together. Emotions are high, and there is definitely an attraction between them, and when she asks him to kiss her so that she knows what it is like, Lance agrees. Then there are fireworks. Not literal ones, but just as good.
Will Lance manage to find a way for them to escape, can the curse be broken and if so, how. Will they have their happy ever after. Hey, this is a fantasy, of course, they will, but reading how it comes about was wonderful.
I can't say anything negative about this story because it was perfect in every way. I definitely recommend it!!

This is honestly one of the cutest stories that I have read in quite a while. Magic mixes with modern technology in the world Ridley gives us. Along with some science fiction. A mercenary with a large bounty on his head and a fabled treasure in a castle guarded by ice that no one has ever returned from. Well guess what, our protagonist is just the main to try it.
Lance goes to the castle because he needs money quick and is too stubborn to sell some of the priceless artwork he has in his home. So he braves the cold and foreboding temperatures until he reaches Castle Cavanaugh only to find he is trapped inside with Princess Marigold, who has been under the curse for over 600 years.
The comedy in this novel is golden, it isn't trite or awkward. In fact, the author tells the story in a laid-back and easy-going manner. We immediately like both the main characters and hope that they can break the curse before Lance is doomed at midnight.

Take your classic Princess in Distress, locked away in a castle by an older, pissed off female royal.
Let her stew for several hundred years (or six hundred plus.) Should I mention the castle is made of ice, so she can see out but should anyone figure out a way in, they can never leave? In fact, by the stroke of midnight, those adventurous souls are transformed from this life form to something entirely different.
Over the years technology has advanced, as has communication, but even though ways and means change, much remains the same. Greed still plays a major role in human motivation.
And nearly adult Princesses are still human and have urges and curiosity, too.
Overall a fun and a flirty clean read, but there is a scene that should melt more than ice!
Lance will steal your heart. He offers something no one has ever brought to the table.
Marigold proves worthy of his loyalty and interest.
If you think you have had your fill of Princesses and their rescuers, make room for one more. You will not be disappointed.

A delighful story set right before Christmas, that will bring a lot of laughs and smiles as you follow Lance Desmond, adverturer extraordinaire to a magical place to find his fortune! Or will he? When he saw the poster of himself displayed right in front of the Pawn & Potion and his home above, the heading was "Wanted Dead or Alive" and the smaller print gave a reward. Oh geez, he had already spent that money they were after him for, so what to do?
He had the brilliant idea to go to Castle Cavanaugh and find his riches! But wait, nobody ever came back who went in? Oh he could do it. Plus he never expected a Medieval Princess.
This was such a fun, lighthearted story, which is exactly what I needed. One can never smile too much! Waiting for the next in this series!!

Kissed by Magic is book one in the Magic & Mayhem paranormal romantic comedy series by Erica Ridley. This is quite a change for Ridley. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of her Regency romances. This story has a touch of fantasy and magic in it. It is a fun romp with humor sprinkled through. I loved the hero Lance Desmond. He has a quirky relatable sense of humor. Princess Marigold reminded me of the princess in the Mario Kart games. Overall, a fun, quick read. I was gifted a copy of this book.

This was a really good quick read. Great for anytime reading. I really enjoyed the characters, the plot, the creativity, and the HEA. There's a little suspense and action, emotions, strength, snark/sass, fun and serious and pretty much a great ole time. Fun and sweet and a little dark. Great for the holiday snuggle-in book or... whenever. Much fun and a quick and satisfying escape. Enjoy!

First book of 2020! This was a fun, easy read to start off the year. With under 200 pages, there wasn't much room for character development and insta-love definitely happened. It was entertaining and refreshing and perfect for a day at home on the couch.

Fun Adventure.

I'm not really into fantasy novels; as a result this one took me a (very) long time to get into the story. But it was nice enough, I suppose.
