Theo and Laurie have been best friends for six years but despite doing everything together, they’ve never been anything more than best friends and roommates.
Then someone calls them boyfriends and upends their neat little world.
As the pair struggle to put a lid on their feelings, a random email from Theo’s brother throws him even further off balance and all Laurie can do is offer a niche form of stress relief. But Laurie’s support doesn’t stop at rope garters. Once the two of them fall into bed, it’s clear things will never be the same between them.
Now, Theo and Laurie must finally address the feelings they’ve tried to hide from and figure out if they really are just friends, or if there’s always been something more between them. Can they give each other everything they ever wanted?
Like I Wanted is a steamy best friends to lovers contemporary MM romance featuring a femme boy who loves zombie horror and weird taxidermy, a goth with a secret love of shibari, interfering adult entertainers, a vicar who takes no shit, and a quest for guinea pigs.
It is the fifth and final novel in the Heather Bay series and is best enjoyed as part of the series.
Please note that one of the MCs is involved in adult entertainment and chooses to remain working in the industry, with the full consent of his partner, once they’re in a relationship. For more information, please see the internal Author’s Note.
Charlie lives in England with her husband and a dachshund named Biscuit. She spends most of her days wrangling other people’s words in her day job and then trying to force her own onto the page in the evening.
She loves cute stories with a healthy dollop of fluff, plenty of delicious sex, and happily ever afters – because the world needs more of them. Charlie also believes that love comes in all shapes and sizes.
Charlie has very little spare time, but what she does have she fills with cooking, pole-dancing, reading and ice-hockey. She also thinks that everyone should have at least one favourite dinosaur…
Well I made it to 70% so I feel that’s enough to count it and rate it.
Before this book, I would have said im this authors biggest fan. I’ve loved everything she has written. I think 3 or 4 of her books are already on my best of 2024 review.
But I’m sorry I actively disliked this book. I skimmed a lot. I really hated the Theo character. He was written so immature and child like. All his friends and coworkers infantilized him so much. He was treated like a child and acted like one too. I felt like I was reading about a middle schooler. I couldn’t do it.
I’m sending an offering up to the five star gods for my next book. Please and thank you.
Charlie rounds out her wonderful Yorkshire small town series with this perfect blend of spicy and sweet roommates romance.
I've been intrigued by how she was going to tell Laurie and Theo's story given that throughout the rest of the books, they've behaved like they already were a pair.
Well, what we get is a super story about two people who are absolutely made for each other in every way.
As with the rest of this series, there's an element of dealing with the past in ways that might surprise and when Theo's much younger brother gets in touch out of the blue, it rocks both their worlds.
But, as Theo makes tentative friendship steps with his brother, he turns to Laurie more. A fes home truths from both sets of their friends, has them having an honest conversation about their feelings.
The way they connect is gorgeous, especially once the kink element kicks in and Laurie's love of the Japanese art of shibari is discovered by Theo, something he finds helpful in grounding him.
I love how Laurie is totally committed to supporting Theo's career in adult entertainment, how he knows it's a job and not him looking elsewhere.
I also love how Theo's there for Laurie too, he's the constant in his life who never lets him down or disappoints him
This is a really fitting end to the series and I'm pleased that it'll get it's own spin-off with Theo's brother West taking the opening spot later this year.
Loved all the Shibari, the pastel rope sounds so pretty 😍
Laurie is such a romantic and I would definitely want to be friends with him, although the fact he isn't rushing to replace the carpet in his bathroom kinda grossed me out - my mum has it and I always think it's so weird 😂
I've enjoyed this series so much, excited to read the spin-off with West.
3.5 stars Nice ending of a lovely series. Theo and Laurie's story is sweet and steamy, maybe too much sweet: when they got together, it was all romantic words and long sex exploration (the shibari kink is well written, but it took too much space in the story). I loved very much West's character, I'm glad the author gave Theo a family. Theo's work friends are amusing, I wouldn't mind if they'd pop up in the author's next works.
I advise others to read the previous books in the series. I was gifted this book by the author and had no clue. It didn't diminish my pleasure in reading it though. Theo and Laurie were adorable besties that were in love with each other. It was sweet how their friends gently pushed them together. The ending was perfect!! Overall, it was a very sweet, steamy, and lovely story.
4.25 stars. Love this end to the series! One thing I appreciated so much is that Theo's traumatic past is alluded to but we never get all the gory details. I get that that might frustrate or irritate others, but I hate being secondhand traumatized in a romance.
Rating: 4.5 Steam: 4 PoV: dual, 1st person Genre: contemporary romance, MM Tropes / tags: friends to lovers, found family, small town
I had such a great time reading Theo and Laurie’s story - I’d been curiously waiting to find out what was going on with them, and I couldn’t help but love their story!
Roommates. Best friends. Lots of cuddling. Lots of nights spent in the same bed… Theo and Laurie were so adorable! A bit oblivious to their own feelings perhaps, but who doesn’t love a great story about best friends accidentally falling in love with each other?
Theo was a complete brat, as expected, and I laughed a lot at him and his antics. Laurie handled him so well though, and it was easy to see how perfect they were for each other. Their friendship made a strong foundation for a relationship, and their relationship development was heartwarming and sweet.
The steam was set to high, Laurie could definitely talk dirty and I was a big fan of the kink as well. I loved how Theo found comfort and safety in Laurie’s ropes and knots. Shibari as a grounding technique worked really well for both of them, and it was lovely to see them explore together.
Like I Wanted was a wonderful ending to the Heather Bay series, and I’m really going to miss this small town with its fantastic characters and their friendships. This is definitely a series I recommend - especially if you’re looking for heartwarming and cozy small town stories with great found family vibes!
- Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read and review this book. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
Laurence Winchester inherited a Funeral business from his grandparents situated in Heather Bay. He looks the part as he dresses Goth like, all in black including his eye liner, and long black hair. His apartment is above the Funeral premises.
Laurie shares the 2 bed apartment with his Co-worker and best friend Theo for the past 4 years. Theo also works as a PC Gamer and has a sideline as a sex worker in the film making side of that business. Both of them are gay and Theo presents as femme boy, while Laurie has his own independent interests in Shibari, Poetry and reading.
All of their friends in ‘The Sleeping Goose’ pub, believe there are a couple but are reluctant to ask outright. Until one night, a work colleague and friend of Theo, asks the question outright. Silence falls within the group.
Theo and Laurie start to question their best friend relationship. Looking and observing each other in a different way, changes start happening.
Then a person from Theo’s past makes contact and Laurie is very suspicious. Both of them individually seek help from their various friends. Laurie introduces a special element to their friendship that speed up more changes.
*************
This is another 5 Star read for me in this Heather Bay Series from Charlie Novak. This one is the raunchiest one given one element in Theo’s line of work. There was a lot of Gaming talk and descriptions of games that I could have done without, but that’s just me.
I had been looking forward to this one (I had lined up the series ready to read in sequence) first of all because of the cover (Laurie) and then because I like the combo of Goth and Femme Boy relationship.
Sadly this is the last in the series (at the end of each book Charlie offers a little novella to catch up on each couple’s relationship).
My favourite couple were Book 1, Oliver and Lane, next was Book 3, Will and Jamie, and Book 5, Laurie and Theo.
Highly recommend the whole series as a cosy, fuzzy warm, make you feel good, read. I’ll so miss reading of the gatherings of them all at ‘ The Sleeping Goose’.
So I first became interested in Theo and Laurie’s story after reading Drama Queen. A femme boy (my favorite) and a goth guy (a rarity in M/M romance)? Sign me up! Unfortunately, this book was just okay. While I’m not a fan of elaborate plots, the lack of one made it drag in this instance, especially the group gatherings that were long and frequent. I also wasn’t crazy about Theo’s “bratting”; it’s not something I’m personally into so I’ll admit I’m not an expert, but I don’t feel like he was being particularly bratty, which made it seem like Laurie was overreacting. Things I did like were the shibari, Laurie’s continued acceptance of Theo’s job as a sex worker after getting together, and the explicit verbal consent and checking in.
I have to dnf this. Almost every chapter is about Laurie not caring about Theo being in the entertainment business. We get it. It is his work. Don't need to be reminded of it again and again. By his friends, his brother, etc....
Like I Wanted is the fifth book in the Heather Bay series by Charlie Novak. This is the story of Laurie and Theo. I really liked their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written.
This was a very sweet romance with a strong focus on emotions over anything physical (there’s still a couple sex scenes and some kink but it’s all extremely tied to the emotions, no pun intended). Maybe too sweet for me. Even the sex scenes were sugary-sweet. I think it was to contrast with Theo’s work as a video sex-worker, but it got a bit sappy for my tastes. This is entirely a personal thing for me and not at all a fault with the book. Despite this I really enjoyed reading about these two.
I liked the contrast of a goth guy and a bubblegum-cute guy better than I expected. And if Theo had been written a bit differently or been younger I probably wouldn’t have like him much. As it is I really enjoyed both MCs. I thought they were sweet friends and had a sweet romance. I didn’t feel much of a romantic vibe between them, but that didn’t bother me much.
Theo is a 32 year old cis white gay GNC man. He says he feels male but that if dark blue is “man” he feels like a baby blue, but still blue. He’s short and slim and a bit soft. He has blue eyes and blonde hair. Most people think he’s about 10+ years younger than he is. He is cute and sweet and loves feminine clothing (actually I don’t think he ever wears masculine clothing, or if so then very rarely), taxidermy (well he likes to buy taxidermy animals in fun poses but he doesn’t make the figurines himself), anime, video gaming, and doing porn. He’s a twitch streamer and an amateur porn actor on his My Fans account. He also works with Theo at the funeral home. His parents were awful about him being gay and femme and so he left at 18, leaving behind a 10 year old brother Wes (who he learns is actually bisexual and gets a boyfriend and is sweet and also “failed” his parents).
Laurie is a 25 year old cis white gay man. He’s got a tall, slim build with long dark hair. He’s goth and likes makeup. He’s calm and practical and is more introverted than Theo is, but also more sure of himself and the world in general. He inherited his family’s funeral home business. He took care of his grandparents until they died and misses them terribly. He’s the opposite of Theo’s bubbly brattiness and likes it that way. He’s also the only person Theo listens to (because Theo can’t stand disappointing Laurie or making him sad). He likes some forms of BDSM, especially ornamental rope work. He’s extremely protective of Theo and very supportive. He has no issues with Theo sleeping with up to a dozen men on a filming weekend because he knows how much work it was for Theo to become comfortable with his body and sexuality. He has zero issues with jealousy in any way.
I like that they communicated well about Theo’s job and Laurie’s comfort with the fact that Theo needs to be railed by 10 huge men on camera to be happy. I don’t understand why they never discussed limits of sex outside of Theo’s work. They make a big deal about not conflating sex for work and sex in a relationship, but then they only discuss tamed die work and have no discussion of what is expected for recreational sex with others. I’m going to assume Laurie is completely fine with it (as long as it makes Theo happy he’d let him sleep with or even marry someone else probably). I don’t know about Theo. He didn’t have a problem with Laurie hooking up before they got together, but that tells me nothing about how he feels when they’re dating. I guess the most likely answer is neither of them have any need for sexual exclusivity and possibly not even romantic exclusivity (other than they aren’t interested in anyone else romantically and haven’t been in years).
Contains: —characters in non-monogamous relationship (at least sexually), no polyamory on page but it’s not explicitly ruled out —height difference —gay MCs —various queer side characters (I didn’t read the whole series all the way through so I’m not sure of details) —small town —friends to lovers —vibes of ethical non-monogamy —goth boy and cute/pink/femme boy —older bottom/sub, younger top/dom —reference to homophobic family —reference to death of grandparents
Other: —third person dual POV —cheating: no. —romantic rival: no. Theo sleeps with a dozen or more other men regularly for his porn career, and he adores all of them but isn’t romantically into them. —break up: —kids: no. —sex: a couple open door sex scenes. Strict roles with Laurie topping and being in a dom-like role, and Theo bottoming and being in a sub-like role. Even in his porn work, Theo exclusively prefers to bottom and take a submissive role —HEA: yes.
“Yeah, but, I don’t know, that feels different.” “Why?” “I don’t know, it just does. You’re just meeting my friends from work.” “Yes, friends who an hour or two beforehand will have all been deep inside you and fucking you senseless,” Laurie said with a dry chuckle. “I think if I had a problem with any of this, I wouldn’t be coming to have dinner with you, would I?”
“Sex with them is super fun, but it’s still work,” [Theo] said. “And while I love getting railed by them, you give me something they can’t.” “Love?” I laughed. “Actually I was going to say you tie me, and it makes me feel wanted and safe, but I guess love too.”
I’ve been waiting for Laurie and Theo book since the very beginning. They both have interest me since I first read them on page and wanted to know all the things since they felt so mysterious to me. I was hesitant going into this book being Theo works in adult entertainment. I have nothing against the work especially if it works and makes someone happy. When it comes to me I’m just not the biggest fan of seeing my characters in sexual acts with other people that are not their love interest or partner. I really appreciate the author putting it in the description for the blurb and in her author notes so no one is blind sided going in and can choose rather or not to continue reading it.
I did like and really appreciate that the author didn’t go into any explicit details with Theo with other men. Just told us that he was going to work on some stuff with some of his colleagues in the industry and that’s it. I rather read on page scenes with just him and Laurie.
I’m really happy that I pushed past my discomfort when it comes to the work that Theo does and took a chance on this book. I didn’t want to give up on Laurie and Theo without giving them a chance.
I would definitely say that if you wanted to enjoy this story to its fullest that you should read the books in this series in order. This book picks right off where we last saw Laurie and Theo in the previous book. Austin, one of Theos work colleagues made a comment about them being “boyfriends” and that pretty much set these two off on discovering their feelings for each other and having to actually think about it.
I really enjoyed getting to see into their lives together and their relationship. We see glimpses of them in the other books but it was nice to actually get to know them more and see how everything got started for them. How their dynamic works so well together. Early on you can see how sweet Laurie is on Theo, how much he takes care of him and just supports him in everything he does but while also being firm when need be. You can see how much trust and love was already there between them before they went any further with their feelings.
The development between the two of them happens early on and at a pace that seems fast but also doesn’t. At the very beginning we know that they are contemplating their feelings towards each other and working through that with the help of their friends. When they both decide to take a chance and say something things move pretty quickly. The thing is they both been friends for over six years and know each other inside and out so it’s understandable that they wouldn’t move at the same pace like other people.
Since I was hesitant going in due to Theo being in the adult entertainment business I was worried how everything would work out in this book and I think the author did a great job with it and I got more comfortable throughout the book with it. Laurie and Theo see it as a job and it’s something that helps Theo feel more control over his body and give him power but it’s not him looking else where. Laurie understands this and understands the difference between what he does for work and when it just the two of them. I really appreciate how everything was handled in this book and the talks they both had with discussing this moving forward in their relationship.
Even though I ended up enjoying this read they was a few things I wish I gotten out of the story. I wish we got a little more time or moments with Theo and Laurie being a couple and dating and doing stuff different from when they were just friends. Also more spicy scenes since I wasn’t expecting Laurie to be so kinky and I really enjoyed it and wanted to see more of it. I wanted to see more I guess you can say angst or a build up towards their first real kiss and the first time together in the bedroom.
This is a low angst read and the conflict we get in this is with Theo and having his younger brother that he haven’t seen or spoken to in over 14 years. I did like seeing his brother West and him coming back together and building a relationship again and that aspect of the story but I did want more of Theo background and his past. I don’t need super high angst or even going that deep I just wanted to understand more and give me all the feelings.
Overall even though I enjoyed my time reading about Theo and Laurie and I think they are the absolute sweetest things ever and the story was also sweet and fluffy. This is my less favorite in this series just due to some themes and wishing some things were done a little better. That doesn’t mean I don’t love this series and everyone in it cause I do. I did actually like all the guys Theo works with and it was fun seeing them interact together. Especially seeing all the guys from the previous books and seeing how much their little group has grown. I really the found family and small town. I can’t wait to dive into West story next.

Fabulous Finale, my favorite couple and a must read
Rating: 5🌈
From the moment I met this intriguing couple I wanted their story. Over the course of this wonderful series, we get just enough of each character as they’ve interacted with the core group of men that have formed the foundation of this series to get a great sense of what they look like and who they are.
There’s the tall, elegant goth owner of Winchester & Sons Funeral Directors, Laurence “Laurie” Winchester. He’s quiet but has a strong presence. Wears black but stylish clothing and with makeup to match. His best friend/closest companion of over 4 years is a someone who lives with him, works with him, doing the makeup on the clients, but also has interesting side businesses.
That’s Theo (he,they), small , beautifully femme, with painful abuse in his past, both from exes and from family rejection. His love of exotic taxidermy is as well known as his streaming gaming Twitch and MyFans porn channels. Both of which have helped him become more the person he is today. Brighter than the sun, loyal, a bit bratty and incredibly brave.
Of all the fascinating individuals Novak has created for the series, Theo and Laurie have to be both my favorites as well as the most compelling.
With Theo, there is a clear picture of past disturbing events in his life but the author is subtle about the details. We know the origins and the effects that they have on Theo, and that’s enough. Laurie, too, has some parental issues, but nothing on the level that Theo has been subjected to. While on the surface, they may have little in common, together they match.
I love the way Novak unsettles their established relationship with one statement by a friend that sets off a real exploration of who and what they really are to each other. This is helped by heartfelt discussions with members of their found family of friends. Each from the prior stories in the series who help bring clarity to their feelings about their relationship.
Japanese bondage rope play or shibari is a big element here and a excellently integrated one. Novak introduces it into the storyline and their dynamic slowly and then builds it as an important part of their relationship, letting us see how impactful it is to both men in their roles. Such a sexy, well written aspect of this romance and novel, one I loved.
Healing and reconnecting has always been a deeply rooted theme of this series. Whether it’s reconnecting with your roots and the land of the vivid world of Heather Bay or the inner world conflicts that the characters are dealing, Novak’s has them rediscovering their own unique identities and finding their own way to a future with a partner. Each through wonderful journeys we’ve been a part of.
So it’s no small surprise that a big chunk of Theo’s discarded past arrives in this finale. Read the book, enjoy every moment of this aspect of the story as I did.
All the characters gather round as well as several others from Theo’s MyFan channel. I really hope Novak has a plan for them down the line as they are such an enjoyable sexy group of men.
Heather Bay is going down as one of my favorite contemporary romance series, one that ended with a 5 star couple. I truly felt as though I knew this remarkable seaside town and its inhabitants. I’ll miss having more stories so it’s going on my to be reread list, long as it is.
That gorgeous cover is delightful.
This series and this book are must reads! Check them out in the order they are written!
Heather Bay series : - [x] Like I Pictured #0.5 - [x] Like I Promised #1 - [x] Like I Wished #2 - [x] Like I Needed #3 - [x] Like I Pretended #4 - [x] Like I Wanted #5 - series finale
Though this book nominally stands alone, I’m glad I’ve been following along from the start so that I, too, could be utterly and delightfully confused by the relationship between Theo and Laurie like the rest of the characters in this series. I rode the roller coaster of not knowing whether they were simply best friends and roommates, they were *roommates,* they were friends with benefits, they were in a secret relationship, they were dating, they were married…the list of potential options really does go on and on. Luckily, Novak doesn’t make the ride stop anytime soon once we finally get a chance to peek into the lives of these two unique characters.
Novak hits almost all the above scenarios at any particular point in this lovely book as the full story between Laurie and Theo unfolds. These men are strong, distinctive characters in their own right, but since the author was so careful never to let them come off as either stereotypes or archetypes as secondary characters in previous installments of this series, I had faith that this would also be the case once they came to the forefront. They were already adorable together, and Laurie’s affection is immediately obvious even when he’s still in denial about their relationship status himself. Though Novak does add a dash of kink to this story, it’s much more about the characters’ personalities than any sort of formal power exchange, and I loved that it serves as a way for them to grow closer and show affection even before their physical intimacy moves to the next level.
Overall, this is a fairly low angst book, but that doesn’t mean everything is smooth sailing for the entire story. Growing pains can be awkward even when it involves change for the good, no matter whether the relationship is romantic, platonic, or familial (all of which are also touched on in this book). Death work and sex work, considering the main and secondary occupations of these characters, is a pretty charged combo, but Novak treats both with the respect they deserve and allows the men the freedom to be fully themselves, no matter what that looks like, as both individuals and a romantic pair. These characters were the perfect high note on which to leave Heather Bay, and I know Novak has already made sure it might not be the last we see of this wonderful group of friends.
Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the author.
Laurie and Theo have always been close but they're surprised to find their friends think they're dating. And one innocent suggestion sparks the realisation that maybe they are - or at least should be.
I was looking forward to Theo and Laurie's book but I'm afraid it didn't really meet my expectations. Something between them just felt off. The bratty behaviour, the age gap, the angst over the brother who didn't even do anything - all of it just didn't gel.
Theo irritated me in this book. He acted like a child. Like I get it, bratty behaviour is his thing or whatever but it felt too much like a daddy kink and I'm not a fan of that. He was just so clingy and infantile. It wasn't for me. I did like the shibari and how Laurie uses it to calm Theo and make him feel secure and loved. But the rest, just no.
Laurie was slightly better but he was kind of a doormat. I didn't really feel like their relationship was balanced. It felt too weighted in Theo's favour. Plus the refusal to talk about their feelings annoyed me. They're supposedly best friends who talk about everything and share everything and do everything together and they can't have a conversation? It felt manufactured and insincere. Theo might not have that the talk, but I felt like Laurie would and it didn't happen and I hated it.
As for the brother, he got a rough go. He was ten when Theo left home. Him wanting to reach out was fine. The reactions he got from reaching out though were ridiculous. Why should he consider Theo's feelings about it? I mean all's he did was say hey, I'd like to get to know you, let me know if that's something you're interested in. He hardly beat down his door, stalked him and forced him to interact. And everyone was all oh my god, how dare he? It was just bizarre.
I felt like the drama surrounding it was just too over the top. I got Theo feeling conflicted but it wasn't like West ever did or said and for all Theo knows, thought, anything bad about him. Realistically, West should feel hurt for being abandoned without a second though. But they met, it was fine. West is getting his own spin off so it is what it is.
So my most anticipated release was a bit of a disappointment for me. It will suit those who love a good bratty romance and over the top drama. 2 stars.
FINALLY!!!!!!! If you know you know! It wasn't just the original group of friends and their significant others. And probably most of Heather Bay. They acted like they were together. They worked together. They lived together. Were they together? No one knew for sure. But now we do. No. Until now they were bffs. Who lived together, worked together and definitely acted like they were together. But weren't.
And apparently we ALL saw what they didn't. That they were perfect for each other and basically already in love with each other but for various reasons, never let the other know.
We are talking about Theo and Laurie of course. Laurie, the resident goth and owner of the local funeral home and Theo, the rainbow chaos goblin who works in the embalming room, is a streaming gamer AND has a porn channel. It's a wonder he sleeps.
Honestly, seeing them realize what their friends thought was pretty funny. Seeing them realize that they do actually love each other was endearing. Seeing a side of Laurie no one else sees was HOT.
I loved the direction that little tidbit took us. Unexpected, but also totally tracks. Having that dynamic unfold was beautiful actually.
There's also a bit of a side story involving Theo which really brings out the protective side of Laurie. Swoon. And no, it isn't Theo's amateur porn career. Laurie is totally fine with that as long as Theo stays open and honest about what he is doing with whom.
Having Theo and Laurie find their happily ever after- with each other- was SO worth the wait. They were great characters that we got to know so much better and cemented their place in Heather Bay happiness.
Like I wanted is the final book in the series. Each book can be read as a standalone because it follows a different couple but I highly recommend reading them in order. The found family theme in the books is simply the best. I'm going to really miss this group of wonderful people. I've loved their stories and they feel like old friends.
In this book we follow Theo and Laurie. I wanted to read their story since book one and it was worth the wait.
Laurie and Theo are best friends, they live together and work together at Laurie's funeral home. Everybody who meets them thinks they are a couple because they are so close but they insist they are just best friends. But maybe their feelings for each other are more romantic and they are too scared to explore them because they don't want to ruin their friendship. Until eventually they are unable to hold back.
It was a very emotional and empowering book. I loved how supportive Laurie was and Theo was pure sunshine and sass.
They had amazing chemistry and they were the sweetest together. And I thought that their dynamic was just delicious.
I also loved the storyline with Theo's brother and I really liked seeing all of my favorite characters from the series again.
I'm going to miss Heather Bay.
If you are in the mood for a friends to lovers contemporary romance I would very much recommend "Like I wanted ".
Theo and Laurie are best friends and roommates, but despite living in each other's pockets for six years, they've never considered being more.
Until a mutual friend tells them he assumed they were together and they can't stop thinking about that.
This was a wonderful conclusion to the Heather Bay series. Theo and Laurie have been in the background for much of the series and their story does not disappoint!
I loved how accepting Laurie is of Theo's porn work, and how clear it is that Laurie gives Theo something different, that's completely theirs.
The use of Shibari for anxiety management and connection outside of sex was also brilliant. Quiet funeral director Laurie having hidden depths with Shibari knowledge was just perfect for him.
"He looked up at me again and my breath caught in my throat. “You look perfect like this, Theo. Shibari suits you.” Then he leant forward and pressed a gentle kiss to the inside of my thigh, just below the garter, and it felt like my heart had gone supernova."
In this you'll find: 🌈MM contemporary romance 🌈Best friends to lovers 🌈A femme camboy + gamer who loves weird taxidermy 🌈A quiet long-haired goth with hidden talents 🌈Roommates 🌈Funeral directors 🌈Shibari 🌈Meddling adult entertainers 🌈An accepting vicar 🌈Found family 🌈UK (Yorkshire) setting 🌈A HEA
“And they were roommates!” Except they actually were roommates, and everyone else just assumed they were already dating. Best friends/roommates/cuddle buddies/coworkers slowly figure out that they are actually in love with one another and have basically been dating for years without realizing it with the added bonus of having perfectly aligned kinks. Love it when that happens - serendipity indeed.
First, let me say that I love how damn sex positive this book is. Theo is unapologetically pro-sex. He is a sex worker who loves what he does, and does it because he loves it. Hard stop. He never has to explain himself. He never has to apologize for himself. None of the other characters ever question what he does or pass judgment at any point and it’s so effing refreshing. Even once the relationship is established, there is never any crisis or drama involving his work.
I’ve been waiting for this couple’s story since book one (seeing as even the reader didn’t know if these people were dating or not in the beginning) and I think they were absolutely given the story they deserved. This is a great conclusion to not only their story but the series in general. And in typical Charlie Novak fashion, she opened up the door to her next series with new character introductions in this book.
Fifth in series (Heather Bay), can be read as a standalone but might be more fun if read in order. Best friends/roommates to lovers. Light BDSM. Dual POV. Laurie and Theo have been best friends for years, living together, working together at Laurie’s funeral home, and caring for each other with a closeness their friends think borders on intimate. So it’s no surprise everyone already thinks they are boyfriends, but it takes a couple of pushes and Laurie and Theo come to a realization that they are really meant to be together. I was so relieved there was no angst or drama surrounding Laurie and Theo’s jobs (video streaming and an online sex channel) and both their past family issues. The discussions about Theo’s past were vague enough not to cause anxiety, and Laurie’s protectiveness was grounded and did not have to come to the forefront with any outside drama. This was an easy slide into love and commitment, Laurie and Theo already having all of the important things in a relationship - honest communication, acceptance, attraction and a really deep love for each other. Every interaction between them was so sweet and swoony, and the daily shibari mementos were chef’s kiss. 4.5 rounded up
I was eagerly anticipating Laurie and Theo’s story and I wasn’t disappointed with this entertaining and engaging friends to lovers romance. Little nuggets about them have been dropped throughout the entire series and it was an absolute delight to finally see these two wonderful characters get their own HEA. They just needed to stop being oblivious to what was right in front of them to see what everyone else has always thought was there.
Theo is the most delightful sassy and shiny femme brat who has mastered the art of pouting whilst Laurie is a “mild mannered gothic gentleman” who knows how to handle a bratty Theo. They work and share a flat together and once they embrace the changing dynamic of their relationship things get very steamy. There’s some minor angst from outside the relationship which is soon resolved, plenty of friends adding their thoughts into the mix, the taxidermy menagerie increases and a heartwarming HEA that left me smiling.
Charlie Novak has the ability to tell a story that fully immerses you into the world of Heather Bay and it’s fun and quirky inhabitants. It feels like they are giving you a much needed hug.
I have loved Laurie and Theo throughout this entire series and am so excited they got their HEA together. I've agreed with their friends that the two don't act like they are just friends, but I'm surprised no one ever actually asked about their relationship. Maybe I just have super nosy and invasive friends though lol.
These two were so sweet together and this was a very low angst book. There's plenty of heat and we even get a little kink. I would have loved to have a few more scenes were Theo got tied, or a couple with some of the other scenarios they discussed. And as always, we got to catch up with all the other guys from Heather Bay
The plot with West felt unfinished to me. There was such a build up at the beginning and then just nothing. I saw that West is one of the MC's in Novak's new series, so hopefully we'll get a bit more closure on his story and his relationship with Theo.
Overall, a great read with wonderful characters and a nice amount of spice. I'm sad to see the end of Heather Bay, but I'm looking forward to The Court series.
I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review
Ever since these two appeared in Like I Promised I just wanted to know their background. I had so many ideas about their relationship during the last 4 books, and oh, man, did Charlie Novak delivered.
I just love how Laurie is handling Theo, the bossy, sassy, mouthy, pouty fem who had too many men in his life disappointing him.
Laurie is just accepting Theo as he is, with all his dresses, MyFans page, taxidermy animal obsession. And in return Theo is giving Laurie the power to be the slight dominant and caring partner, let's face it, there is noone else who can keep Theo in line.
I love the doubts Laurie has, the insecurities about that they will work but also his dreams about a future.
The book is one I really didn't want to put down as it felt I just needed to know how these two would finally manage to put a label on their relationship.
it is sad to see Heather Bay being over, it's a place you want to visit and these guys just feel real and I just hope they will come up again in future series.
I think I figured out what irks me: the tension is in all the wrong places. There's manufactured tension between Laurie and Theo's brother that is completely unfair, because Theo's past is all telling in the story. There's manufactured tension when West emails and everyone's lack of grace in understanding that a 10 year old does not have agency and grudging acceptance when he proves to not have ulterior motives. There's manufactured tension about the couple moving into the next phase of their relationship when about 16 people already, rightly, assume they've already been in there. Without deeper story telling it all remains two-dimensional.
Don't get me started on brats 😠 I have well documented impatience in the community for their self centered, manipulating rudeness by doing their form of kink in public. The public did not consent. Dudgeons are places to brat in a public space; Cons, Munches, etc, but NOT in the general public and brats push that line in the real world all the time. Theo's cute, but not that cute.
I am so sad! Not just because this is the last Heather Bay story and my namesake village is so amazing, but because it's the last hurrah for this amazing friend group... but I'm so happy that Laurie and Theo are finally figuring things out!
I love the oblivious best friends trope that's been running through the entire series and culminating in Like I Wanted... the pining, the second-guessing and of course the pulling away from each other as they examine their past actions through a new lens...
I love that they were ready to move their relationship into something new, and that they communicated about it! I also love how protective and pragmatic Laurie is and just how sweet and innocent Theo is despite their backgrounds and past traumas... I also love the way that they created something just for them with the daily shibari!
I can't wait for the next spin-off and finding out more about West!
For the final Heather Bay book we have Theo and Laurie. Theo and Laurie have been a pair from the very first book, living, working, and socialising together. The only people shocked by the assumption that they are dating are Theo and Laurie. Our hot Goth funeral home director and femme boy undertaker/streamer/porn star are a bit uncertain with each other after realising their frienda assumed they were dating. I adored the history of the deep friendship they share. I adore Theo and his strength in being absolutely and joyfully himself, particularly after his past. Laurie is a steady, sexy delight. I was so glad when these two finally found their way to each other. I adored the understanding of Theo's s3x work, both by Laurie and the story itself. Anyone else want "it's too early to talk about monster f*cking" merch? This book was a delight.
This is a modern queer romance, the fifth in the “Heather Bay” series that should be read after the free Novella, “Like I pictured”and after the previous four books, but you will also see hints of other previous characters from this author’s other series too. The world-building is great, the character development well written with smoldering heat between the characters. I love the friendships and secondary characters are not skimped upon which really adds that extra aspect that connects me!
Laurie and Theo have a unique relationship but when someone calls them “boyfriends” things get awkward between them. Laurie offers such unconditional love and support but is afraid to take things from friends to lovers. There is such a sweet vulnerability in these two quirky people!
I love friends to lovers that it’s so obvious they should be together and add on friends actually being surprised when they say they are not together…
I was literally melting while reading all the attentive things he was doing for him. lol
The way Laurie treated and took care of Theo made me swoon so many times…
This one was the fastest I ever read when it said Epilogue I was like what already? no… this is how I know a book was good when I can't even compute that it was over so fast I check the times this and how unbalanced by it I was… I love it so much…
I highly recommend it if you love oblivious, swoony, cute, friends to lovers ever.
Dam Charlie Novak does Friends To Lovers justice. It's my favourite trope and I eat it up.
The narrator was so good it was my first by him and will definitely go for seconds.
4/5 It was so nice to see Theo and Laurie get their act together, lol. This felt like it was a very long time coming! I thought there was a good balance of denial, a smidgen of angst, and then actual conversations (admittedly with others before with one another) to figure this all out. I loved how open and caring their relationship was both when it was still only friendship and once it become more.
I enjoyed the exploration of shibari and the two of them figuring out what they liked together. The open and clear communication about Theo’s work and Laurie’s comfort level was really nice. I liked the high level of openness and acceptance.
I still love the big friend group and everyone interfering but meaning well. I was really happy how things turned out with West, and I’m looking forward to switching over to the Court series.
