Bastian Wycliffe, the Earl of Wendelhem, has finally moved on…or so he thought. En-route to a hunting trip after over-indulging the night before, he endures a frightful and terribly embarrassing swoon. He’s seen a ghost and her name is Cordelia Waite, the Duchess of Downsbury.
Mrs. Weylen, formerly a duchess, has a secret. All it took was the chance meeting in the inn that fateful night for her memories to come back and haunt her. She makes haste returning to London incognito with the intent to clear up misconceptions and to deliver an ultimatum to her former lover.
Yet, when a new found obsession refuses to accept the truth, and her imprisoned husband discovers she’s still alive, their lives and relationship may be in danger. Second chances have never been more precarious.
Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Layna discovered her love of reading at an early age. When she isn’t devouring salacious romance novels or writing, she enjoys losing herself in researching ancient history and mythology, weaponry, and hiking. She lives in Northern Ontario, with her husband and two daughters.
Bastian Wycliffe, the Earl of Wendelhem, never imagined he would swoon, thinking that he saw a ghost. But that woman couldn't be his Cordelia, posing as the widowed Mrs. Weylen, could she? The unique relationship Bastian had with Cordelia, that of domination and submission, was what made him fall in love with her, only to have her abandon him for fates unknown. But now that he knows Cordelia is back, he is not going to let go of her again.
Everyone thought Cordelia Waite, the former Duchess of Downsbury, was dead. All but her husband, who shipped her off for her secret. A series of unfortunate events prevented Cordelia from asking Bastian to elope with her to America the first time, and now she intends to discuss some matters with Bastian before disappearing back into country life.
Suffice it to say, the heat level was intense, as Bastian keeps thinking back to how perfect Cordelia was for him, and how his current paramours could not satisfy his unique needs. The unsaid regrets Cordelia had with her past created a poignancy -- as well as urgency -- with her secret and the need to protect it. The previous villain comes back and seeks destruction upon Cordelia a second time, except now she has Bastian as her champion.
This novella was an interesting break in the more calmer romances I typically read. I enjoyed the historical aspect of this story as well as the personalities of these characters and their self-honesty. Moreover, it made the story that much unpredictable that nothing was as it seems, for the reader and for the characters. One can describe this novella as a carriage ride, in which the characters get on at various points of its journey and the ride is, of course, fill of rocky bumps, culminating to the Happily-Ever-After...and one can but guess what goes on within the carriage. ;)
I received this book from the touring host for an honest review.
Her Deviant Lord is the third book in the Pleasure Garden Follies. With a good plot and great characters the story itself needed more work. Again there are a few gaps within the story and I feel the author rushed the story for some reason. If she had spend more time on the story creating more scenes itself this would have been a great book. I like the fact that Isabel and Nathaniel played a mayor role in the book as they helped the couple Bastian and Cordelia to be together after a long separation. In the first book we have learned about Cordelia and her villain of a husband; Richard, The Dutch of Downsbury, who caused much mayhem in both the previous books. With Cordelia declared dead after an accident, he weaseled his way to marry Emily, all to sell her and get his hands on her dowry. Cordelia's strong willed and very protective character makes her a wonderful and believable person. Very protective about her son she knew exactly what she wanted. Determined, she's willing to risk all to have Bastian back in her life. Bastian who was her lover in book 1; ended up mourning her death more than her husband in Book 2. Devastated he almost lost it but with his friends he regained his composure and be the man Cordelia loved. In this book, he finally got his act together, moving on when he saw her at a tavern and swooned, thinking he saw a ghost. Willing to go after her and fighting for his family. When the two finally meet, all kinds of mayhem followed once again; with a new villain in the form of a courtesan, we learn about Richard's fate as well, which was well deserved. The love scenes were choppy; since this is a erotic romance, it needed more action between the sheets, it was cut short to quickly and in the process it missed the desire and passion it hinted on between them. This is not a stand alone book and must be read in series, since the plot continues throughout it. Overall a entertaining series but I would definitely recommend the author put more meat on the bones, so to speak, so that this could become a great series.
We finally get to meet the Duchess of Downsbury, the ever elusive, presumed to be dead wife of the vile Duke. This was the sub-plot that tied into all the other stories in the series. But as the title suggests, this story’s hero is definitely deviant. We were introduced to him from the beginning, but it seemed he was drinking himself to death. He had an affair with the Duchess and fell in love with her. When he found out she died, he died inside. He debauchery and penchant for going into brothels, meant that he was doomed.
I found his back story a little alarming. I won’t go into details about it here, but it really made my mouth gape open. Deviant might be a little too tame of a word for how he got introduced to his kinks. But, it did make sense to how his character evolved and how his relationship to the Duchess, Cordelia came to fruition.
Besides that scene from the past, I did enjoy this story. It came to a conclusion that was satisfying, especially in terms of the former Duke.
