Spinning straight out of the hit Nickelodeon cartoon comes an all-new, all-ages TMNT book perfect for fans both old and new! Four fantastic tales pin the Turtles against villains new and old like Snakeweed, the Shredder, and a horde of zombies?
I came across a clip in Youtube about Splinter and his parenting method with the turtles. The design, animation, story and characters amused me so much that I finished the whole show of 5 seasons with 120 episodes in just 5 days! I wanted more TMNT and thought there must me a comic too, and I was right.
But when I started reading, it didn't give me the same vibe as the show. I know they are different things but I was hoping to get the same thrill. Unfortunately, I'm disappointing. The art specially isn't fun to look at, the story isn't much. But since it's the 1st volume, maybe it will get interesting in the coming ones.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures Vol. 1 is a graphic novel intending for young readers. The artwork looks pretty much like cartoon television show that runs on Nickelodeon. The stories are not complex and can easily be followed by a younger audience.
This graphic novel consists of four separate stories involving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Their supporting cast consists of their sensei Splinter and their good friend April, a young girl. Each of the stories is a stand-alone and they usually involve a couple of battles with either the Foot Clan or some other evil entity. The stories move along rather quickly and the TMNTs seem to act a fair amount younger than the ones I remember from the live action movie made in 1990 entitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But since I don't watch the cartoon on television, maybe that is the way they act now. They were a little more serious in their live-action movies.
The artwork in all of the stories was pretty darned good, if I am comparing it to what I have seen on television. Although I haven't watched the show, I have caught glimpses of it over the years.
I have always had a fond place in my heart for these four mutated turtles since I saw the first movie in theaters back in 1990. I then saw the other two movies (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III), liking the second film a lot more than the third, but the TMNTs had already started to get a little more goofy. Where the first movie was more oriented for adults, the following two movies seemed to be aimed at the younger audience. Still, I found that I really enjoyed the characters and have watched the movies many times (I used to own all of these movies on VHS). So, reading this graphic novel was like sitting down with an old friend. I found that I enjoyed the stories, but I wished that the stories were a little more complex.
After each story, there are usually two or three full page of artwork of the TMNTs, which have been drawn by young fans of the turtles. Some of them were quite good and I found myself impressed by the quality of artwork.
Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures Vol. 1 is a good collection of stories that are perfect for young readers. So, if you are looking to find the first four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Animated Adventures comic books collected into a single graphic novel, then this is the book for you. Any lover of the Nickelodeon TV shows will fall head over heels for this book. Cowabunga!
Back in the late 80s and early 90s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were king. However, after the initial popularity faded, the franchise had a hard time staying around. There were a couple of false starts in the late 90s and early-to-mid 00s, but Turtlemania just wasn't catching. However, things seem to be turning around for the TMNT as in 2011 they got their own regular comic series through IDW (which is fantastic) and then in 2012 their own CGI-cartoon on Nickelodeon (which is also quite good). Turtlemania looks to be catching once again.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures, Volume 1, serves to sort of bridge the gap between the two (media wise, not story wise). It follows the continuity of the animated show, while sharing the medium with its more mature comic "brother." It serves to illustrate a lighter, more comic version of the turtles (much like the original cartoon and current cartoon) and would serve as an introduction to the turtles for a younger crowd. Now, that isn't to say that it isn't still a very good comic.
Each issue is a standalone story (so far) that feels just like an episode of the show. The look and the tone is captured perfectly. Because they are each standalone, sometimes its easy to assume the stories would feel rushed or half-baked, but each story is well paced and developed and overall just as satisfying as a TV episode.
Overall, TMNT: new Animated Adventures is a great continuation of the new TMNT cartooon on Nickelodeon. Fans of the show will enjoy further adventures and fans of the turtles in general will also be able to jump on. It isn't quite as good as the regular TMNT comic, but it's definitely a lot of fun. Also, be on the look out for a great April O'Neill easter egg. Note: I received a free digital copy through NetGalley
*I received this comic as an eARC from Diamond Book Distributers/IDW Publishing on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
So, I'm not going to lie, I'm not a huge fan of the animation in the new TMNT series on Nickelodeon. It just looks weird and I've always been used to the turtles from the '80s. I like the show well enough, bu the animation and their new look is just not my favorite.
That being said, I think it actually translates well to a 2-d format. I really enjoyed the art and the colors in this comic, and the characters seem more... traditional?... than they do in the TV show. I really loved the additional artwork between the chapters. It was sometimes a little darker than the rest of the comic, but I felt like it captured the turtles accurately without being too scary for little kids.
The stories were fun and entertaining, and one chapter even played with zombie culture. I love that the new show has modernized the turtles a little bit, but still stayed true to the characters. Well, the fun characters. Not the dark, gritty, original comic turtles. It was also educational too - Donatello knows what he's talking about! In the zombie chapter, he gives the actual origin of zombies... and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. It's fun for kids and adults!
I would totally recommend this to any fans of the TMNT show, comics, etc. I believe that anyone, young or old, could enjoy this comic. Maybe buy it for your kids or your nieces & nephews or your friends' kids and read it with them. I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment! 4/5.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: New Animated Adventures, Volume 1 is right out of the new animated series on Nickelodeon. I'm not familiar with the new series, but it's the same wise-cracking turtles looking for ways to fight evil. The difference in this series that was new to me is that April O'Neil is quite a bit younger. Again, it's not a big deal and they have fun making in jokes about her future career.
This graphic novel pulls together four issues from the series. The boys fight some new villains and some familiar ones. Mikey goes crazy after watching a zombie marathon and then spotting what he thinks is one in the streets. Splinter, Krang, Dogpound and Snakeweek show up. Master Splinter seems to be training April in the arts of the ninja as well.
These are 4 standalone issues. Each one tells a complete story with no lead in or continuation in other issues, much like an animated series would be. Obviously, you would need to be a fan since there is no explanation given as to why there are large turtles wielding weapons and eating pizza running around, but we should all be familiar by now, right?
Good writing and art keep it lively and moving along and perfect for young turtle fans.
I was given a review copy of this graphic novel by Diamond Book Distributors and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
I read this comic with my son, aloud, with different voices and he did the sound effects and the voice of his favorite turtle. He absolutely loved it (he's 8). In fact instead of watching a TV show he said, "Um, mom can we just keep reading?" Why yes, of course son! So he is a book-worm, so there is no surprise that he enjoys reading but TV time is important and rare. While reading he laughed aloud, thought the jokes were the best thing in the world and was sad that the book ended. Why am I saying all this about an 8 year olds reading likes? Well, that is who this comic is geared to, it's not super witty and doesn't have great plot points, but who cares, it's not for me. It's for children, more specifically it's geared toward children who watch the show on Nick. We don't, we watch old school Ninja Turtles, but we still loved the comic. I did find myself rolling my eyes, but there are also morals thrown in. Such as the importance of teamwork, the importance of not ignoring someone because they are younger or have differing interest, don't doubt the girl, and so on and so forth. I would recommend this for your TMNT loving child because they will get a kick out of it.
I'm an Eastman and Laird fan, but the new stories are fun. With a young April training alongside them, the turtles fight Shredder, Dogpound, the Foot clan, Snakeweed, and the Kraang. There are the usual puns and jokes - and lots of pizza. Whether they are fighting off what looks like a zombie horde or trying to prevent Snakeweed from making more killer plants, there is no bad language. It's not always easy to find comics/manga that are free of swearing, even if they are rated for all ages. This is a series that is safe for younger fans and older readers can still enjoy it. The extra pages of artwork are a nice bonus.
I would recommend this to TMNT fans of all ages.
I read an e-book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.
This was very enjoyable, and I'm sure it is more so for the fans of the current show. I've seen a few episodes, and it was enough for me to hear some of the actors' voices as I was reading. This volume contained four story arcs (they named them chapters - but each one had it's own plot and in no way were they connected) and each one had them fighting something new and exciting: government henchmen, zombies, carnivorous plants, ninjas, etc. Of course, the usual morals were set in there too: don't discount Mikey because he's youngest; April because she's a girl; or Raphael because he's more strong headed, etc. I loved the artwork, and even more so the added artwork by other authors stuck in between stories.
I am a HUGE tmnt fan, any and all of it! The new animated series is an adorable fluffy throwback to the mutant teenagers. This comic adaptation is just as adorable. I love how different each brother appears, their characteristics go far beyond the color of their mask. I would enjoy reading more of this silly series asap! My favorite part were the collective of drawings in the back of the publication, as always. I'd love to have some of the prints blown up as large as a poster. Just great.
This was the perfect tie-in to the TMNT animated series. It's funny and action packed with good stories. The four stories had the turtles along with April O'Neil going on quite a few adventures.
In four episodes, the Turtles and April take on a government junkyard, Snakeweed, foot Ninjas, zombies, and Shredder. I enjoyed the 1st and lest episodes best, but all were quick, fun reads that keep the spirit of the TV show. Enjoy!
funny, just like I remembered it being when I was a kid. I enjoyed April as a younger character and loved the series of adventures. Full of puns and slapstick humor that kids are sure to love.
