The very fabric of the Transformers' universe begins to unravel, as huge and ancient cosmic forces take note of Cybertron's (and the Cybertronians') descent into chaos and anarchy. Collects issues #91-95, as well as the #0 issue.
Simon Christopher Francis Furman is a British comic book writer who is best known for his work on Hasbro/Tomy's Transformers franchise, starting with writing Marvel's initial comic book to promote the toyline worldwide, as well as foundations for both Dreamwave Production's and IDW Publishing's takes on the Generation 1 minifranchise.
This one is better than Volume II, in part because the plot is more interesting and the chief villains who survived the Marvel run (Galvatron, Bludgeon) are finally back on Cybertron to finish out their arcs. That was the issue with Scorponok in volume II. His tale was already told, his arc over. Yet, just as with volume II too much is packed into too few issues, combined with a need for everyone to have at least a cameo. Jhiaxus is introduced for all you Generation 2 fans out there. Why though? Do we need more villains???
Bringing back Grimlock was cheap too, but he is Furman's favorite. There is light fan service here, with lines repeated from the 1986 movie, grudge matches such as Soundwave vs. Blaster, but honestly it never treads into stupidity nor takes you out of it. Here the nod to the "car wash of doom" is somehow actually pretty potent stuff. So this is flawed but still decent and I will round up to four stars.
The continuation of Marvel's Transformers continues! I like seeing elements of the Generation 2 comic brought in, although I admit that G2 did it better. (Of course, G2 also had fewer threads, and more time to develop them.) Issue #0, with its vignettes from classic TF comic artists, was also neat. My only quibble was with the references to other and later Transformers continuities - while fun, they do weaken the conceit that this is how the original comic would have continued. (B+)
Some very groan-worthy dialogue to be found here ("Well... that's just Prime!") so consider yourself warned. There are, however, some great moments to be had-- Huffer fans, this book is for you-- especially a showdown between Galvatron and Ultra Magnus that will make you stand up and cheer.
