Addio, fratelli della Costa!

Dopo i gran fasti dei primi due splendidi romanzi dedicati al Corsaro Nero e altri due tomi discreti ma non entusiasmanti con protagonista la prole corsara, il volume conclusivo del Ciclo dei corsari delle Antille termina l’avventura decisamente sottotono: è con tutta evidenza il minore dei cinque, quello dalla trama più debole e ripetitiva, e questa volta non sono bastati i divertentissimi guizzi istrionici del vulcanico guascone Don Barrejo per tenere vivo l'interesse generale della narrazione, quantunque il lussureggiante profluvio di descrizioni d'ambiente permetta sempre di vedere manifestarsi davanti ai propri occhi le meraviglie naturali dell’America centrale e dei mari del Sud in tutto il loro splendore.

Per fortuna che il buon Emilio si fermò qui, anche perché ormai aveva dato fondo a tutto il bestiario selvatico contro cui far scontrare i suoi prodi eroi, in quest'ultima avventura si surclassa, mancano all'appello solo i due liocorni.

C’è da dire che l'arida ripetitività di situazioni sempre uguali è lo stesso difetto che affligge anche gli ultimi volumi del lungo ciclo di Sandokan. D’altronde, le condizioni miserevoli e ai limiti dello strozzinaggio alle quali Salgari nei suoi ultimi anni di vita era ormai costretto a scrivere sono note a tutti; credo che neanche il più grande fra gli scrittori avrebbe potuto reggere quel ritmo e al tempo stesso mantenere alta la qualità delle sue opere.

Este libro cierra el ciclo de aventuras de los “Corsarios de Colores”, en la persona de hermana del Hijo del Corsario Rojo y también heredera del Cacique de Darién, aunque no es ella el personaje principal de la Novela, sino sus fieles filibusteros, a quienes conocimos en El hijo del Corsario Rojo , acompañados de personajes históricos como Raveneau de Lussan (a quien vemos aqui lucir uno de esos chambergos de los que tanto habla Salgari), cuyo libro sirve, muy libremente, como apoyo fidedigno a la exuberante imaginación del autor.
A las amistades indisolubles en medio de mil vicisitudes, los hechos de heroísmo inverosímil que se suceden en medio de las carcajadas de los tipos y estereotipos de gascones, vascos y flamencos, se unen los acostumbrados errores geográficos, imaginarios toros salvajes, encantadores de serpientes y cóndores en Nicaragua, y personajes importantes que de pronto se olvidan o cambian de lugar sin explicación.
El asalto de los filibusteros a Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, en una extraordinaria inferioridad numérica, y el increíble descenso de unas cataratas al interior de cierto tipo de canastas se relatan en libros como el del propio Raveneau y de otros cronistas de la historia de los piratas en la Centroamérica del siglo XVII. Aunque en realidad, los hechos sucedieron en Granada, otra ciudad en Nicaragua, la cual no se quemó totalmente, cosa que sí hizo L’Olonnais en Nueva Segovia, aunque varios años antes.
El motivo real de la travesía del Río Coco, -y no del Magdalena, que se halla en Colombia-, en medio de ciudades fortificadas por el enemigo, asediados por antropófagos, en medio de huracanes e inundaciones, no era la búsqueda del tesoro de cierto cacique, sino el deseo de terminar con la difícil vida que los corsarios llevaban en América, buscando la salida a Santo Domingo y de ahí a Europa a gozar de la riqueza ganada.
Salgari nunca queda a deber. La acción que no se detiene y las mil aventuras que se suceden, la lealtad caballerosa de los filibusteros exaltada al máximo, mezclada con un poco de historia verídica impiden que se abandone la lectura por más de un rato.

Joining the filibusters one last time was delightful. From small taverns to swift frigates and perilous jungles, our heroes face multiple foes and overcome many obstacles on their quest.
Emilio Salgari has once again created a fun adventure story, one of the best in the genre.

What a great ending for a great series!

After so many adventures with the Ventimiglia family, we finally reach an end. The young daughter of the late Red Corsair is back in the Americas in order to collect the inheritance from her deceased grand-father, the great Cacique of Darien. While this last book follows the quest to get her to the Darien, we see the story from the PoV of Don Barrejo, Mendonza and De Gussac, the first two having served under the orders of the son of the Red Corsair.

After being separated from the other pirates and the young countess, Barrejo and Mendonza meet De Gussac, who joins them after his tavern goes bankrupt. The three adventurers must now flee from the Spanish soldiers and rejoin their fellow pirates. Among the Spanish soldiers is the evil marquis of Montelimar, who is desperate to take the young countess' inheritance.

Our three friends go through endless breath taking adventures. From almost being caught and hanged by the soldiers, to having to fight a piton, they go through every kind of deadly adventure. Riding wold bulls, fight condors and escaping man-eating indians makes fighting a bunch of Spanish soldiers feel like kids play.

I can't get tired of Salgari's writing. It's so imaginative. His characters are so round and so easy to love or to hate. While the secondary characters aren't round and don't feel as real as the main characters, he never forgets them, they're always there.
I love how even in the darkest moment, his narrative has fun moments. He never dwells in long descriptions that go off-point. He does dedicated a few paragraphs to explain things, such as the trees they're hiding in, the animals they fight or eat. But those paragraphs don't feel boring, in fact, they feel educative.

While the final fight was a bit anti-climatic, I still loved re-reading this series.

Definitely a must-read for any fan of pirates ;)

Una serie di avventure incredibili conclude il ciclo dei corsari e dei filibustieri, quello che ha visto creare e nominare il Corsaro Rosso e il Corsaro Verde e, soprattutto l’immortale Corsaro Nero, ma anche personaggi storici del calibro di Morgan il filibustiere, che Emilio Salgari ha utilizzato addirittura come luogotenente del Corsaro Nero stesso. Che dire di questa storia? Alcune avventure sono così mirabolanti che sembrano persino incredibili, ma il bello sta proprio qui: la grandezza di Salgari sta nell’aver scritto di luoghi che non ha mai visitato come se lo avesse fatto, e di aver narrato avventure così straordinarie che, a distanza di più di un secolo, ancora appassionano prima i ragazzi che le leggono, e poi, come in questo caso, gli adulti che le rileggono per l’ennesima volta. Imperdibile, come il meglio dell’avventura che sia mai stata scritta.

La saga del corsario negro es buena, sin embargo, creo que se pudo haber desarrollado la historia en solo tres libros en vez de cinco.

A estos filibusteros les pasa de todo y es entretenido ver como le hacen para librarla y además con muy buen humor; es solo que el autor se demoraba demasiadas páginas para hacerlos salir de los aprietos.

En general la saga me gustó aunque casi no leo libros de aventuras, creo que este libro fue el que menos me gustó, pero si vale la pena conocer esta serie.

Avventura allo stato puro. La descrizione dei luoghi da parte di Salgari è cosi accurata che rende la lettura un viaggio quasi reale.Divertente e scorrevole come gli altri capitoli della saga dei Corsari.Degno finale.

The way Emilio Salgari describes the locations and battles makes you feel like you're right there. The characters are amazing too, each with their own personalities. Plus, you can learn a lot about pirates of the time period in which the book was written.
