Sex and the Suburbs

Rate this book
Nikki recounts her days as a carefree single mother, drenched in booze and casual sex. This is one incredibly hilarious romp through gossipy girlfriends, cheap champagne and a parade of colorful lovers. Shocking in its candor, this memoir deals with the challenges of single motherhood on a low budget and a high libido.

From the Salvation Army welfare line to billionaire Kerry Packers private home, Nikki lives a wild life.

She acts like the Playgirl of the Eastern Suburbs, scoffing at the idea of love and marriage until her Prince Charming arrives in the most unexpected of places and kicks the ground out from under her.

Nikki is the comic, drunken, slapper to Carrie Bradshaw's more polished promiscuity.

Laugh-out-loud funny in places and poignantly moving in others. If you loved her first memoir 'One Way or Another', you'll gorge yourself on this one. Nikki just took naughty to a whole new level!!

I read One Way or Another and liked it. This is more of the same but Nikki seems to have found a more mature writing voice. This memoir is more sophisticated despite the pretty outrageous subject matter. After a failed marriage Nikki is left with two small sons and not a dollar to her name. She then proceeds to sleep with just about everybody and drinks champagne like it's water. But she tackles a lot of issues that women don't usually find in memoirs because nice girls don't talk about things like bleeding all over a one night stand, having gynaecological procedures or eating food out of a billionaire's rubbish bin!!! Like the first book we hear about her flings with celebrities. This time she tackles Cold Chisel, The Angels as well as an actor from Police Rescue. When I got to the chapter about the Wiggles.....well...read the book. Highly recommended for a good laugh. Girl's locker room sort of stuff but not for the faint-hearted.

While I didn't love it quite as much as the first book, this is a decent follow up. Nikki is extremely honest and doesn't mind making herself look bad.
This is her true story following "One way or Another". The wild young teen who chased rock stars, is now a divorced single mum to two boys, still wild, still doing things her own way.
Mostly this is pretty funny, Nikki doesn't hold back at all. The scene with the bleeding all over her date was mortifying.
Though it's not a lifestyle I personally relate to, Nikki has certainly lived, and I don't think she'll go to her grave with too many "what ifs".
The chapter in the end did explain a bit. I am glad Nikki got her happy ending and I certainly admire that she's used her struggles to write books and become a successful author. Her recent book "Sex crimes", which is the first of hers I read not based on herself, was excellent, and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
