Hilarious for Kids and Adults Alike (But Not as Good as the “First Grader” Ones)
A family member recently gifted our daughter with a boxed set of all the “Junie B. Jones, First Grader” books, and she loved them so much that we had to complete our collection and buy this Kindergarten set! Our daughter devoured the entire boxed set in just over a week, and now returns to one of the books almost every day. Here are some highlights:
*BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF THE KINDERGARTEN SET: The books in this boxed set chronicle the many mishaps of a spunky young girl named Junie B. Jones as she makes her way through Kindergarten. Junie B. (don’t ever “forget her B.”) becomes known for her short temper, her friendship with the school principal, hilarious wisecracks, “sneaky peaky spying”, and generally getting into mischief as she figures out how the world works.
*TARGET READER: Ages 4-10ish. All of the books center on Junie B.’s adventures at home and in the elementary school classroom, so kids everywhere can identify with her experiences.
*TIME TO READ ALOUD: Approximately 1 hour. Each book is about 70-80 pages long, with large type.
*GENUINELY FUNNY: The series is chock-full of that most precious of all children’s book gems: little jokes and turns of phrase that are HILARIOUS for adult readers! I have no hesitation in guaranteeing several literal “laugh out loud” moments for parents and children alike as they read these books.
*NOT AS GOOD AS THE “FIRST GRADER” SET: While we and our daughter do enjoy this Kindergarten set, I think the series really hits its stride in books 18-28, when Junie B. graduates from Kindergarten and goes to First Grade. As a concerned (and perhaps slightly neurotic) parent, I often skipped the parts where Junie B. mildly threatened her classmates (nothing major—just clenched fists & such), used hurtful language (e.g. “dumb”, “stupid”, “hate”), and made grammatical mistakes that can confuse young readers in real life (e.g., “runned”, “fusstrated”). Skipping over these brief episodes don’t make the books any less enjoyable, but I do like that the author phased much of it out as Junie B. aged—it was a change for the better. So the “First Grade” set gets 5 stars, and this one gets 4.
Overall, I’m so glad we bought these truly enjoyable books to read with our daughter. And whenever we tell friends of our generation (siblings, for example) that our daughter is reading Junie B. jones books, they almost never fail to get excited and tell us how much they loved the books growing up. The series seems to have aged well, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Okay! So, to begin with, I do think Junie B. Jones is funny and fun. I remember liking them as a kid and I can definitely see how kids could relate to her as a character. Her logic is usually backwards, she can be defensive and she can be selfish, and she's always learning. Her behavior isn't usually admirable, but sometimes she comes to the conclusion to do the "right thing" on her own, and I think that's good for kids to see. Her motives can be pretty bad sometimes and her grammar is usually atrocious.
I've heard some parents' concerns with Junie B.'s use of language (calling people names and often saying things are "stupid" and etc.) and I can definitely see where they are coming from. Junie B. isn't a character you would necessarily want your kids looking up to. But, she is a character who learns and grows. So, I can definitely see value in sitting down with a kid, reading these books, and talking about the decisions she makes and what decisions might be better.
My name is Junie B. Jones. The B stands for Brilliant.
These books are hilarious. I read them when I was little and now I still enjoy them. The series is for younger children, but they can still be really funny.
Yes, Junie B. Jones sometimes might be rude to her parents or use grammar like "I standed up", but it's not a problem as long as your kid knows to be polite.
I laugh every time I read the books. One of my favorite parts is The Meatball Incident. It goes something like this: 'My school has a valentine handout and every student is supposed to get twenty cards, but I only get nineteen. But then Mrs. comes over with the valentine box and says "Junie B.! Guess what I found in the valentine box!" I think. "A meatball." I say. Mrs. looks at the ceiling. I look up there too, but I don't see anything. "No, not a meatball. Now think again. Guess what I found in the box!" says Mrs. I think harder. "A meatball." I say. Mrs. frowns. "I told you it's not a meatball. Now, one more time. You are missing one card. I found something in the card box. So, what did I find?" I think my hardest. Suddenly it dawns on me. "A meatball!" I say.'
This series is great for girls to start reading. The books where Junie B. is in kindergarten are a bit better then when she's in first grade.
Loved these books as a child and remember my own Mom reading them to me. Read the Kindergarten series (1-14) with my 5 year old who started Kindergarten this year. We laugh through each book and find that it has become the best part of both our days.
Junie B. Is always making mistakes and learning though sometimes her thinking and problem solving is a bit backwards it makes for some great talking points with your child.
*I did not like some of the name calling and bullying behaviors portrayed. I found as I read out loud to my daughter I just omit all the words ie stupid, meanie, fat, dumb, hate, ugly, shut up, and it does not alter the story and found it all the much more enjoyable without teaching my daughter some of those behaviors.
By far our favorite was book #4 where she is dying to know where her teacher lives and spies on her at the grocery store.
These are about Junie B. Jones in Kindergarten. She is a little bit rude sometimes, and sometimes very funny and nice. She made new friends called Grace and Lucille. She likes school and gets in a lot of trouble. I liked all of the books very much.
June Bug said Junie B was kind of mean and said bad words like dumb and stupid. We still enjoyed reading about her kindergarten experiences. "We can't read the first grade books until next year."
