I tend to have mixed feelings about this series (v1 and v2). Sometimes I read it and I really enjoy the main character's confusion and the happiness he eventually finds. And then there's other times where it seem kinda trite and un-amusing. So, in the end, I would say this is a series that will appeal to some people depending on what they're looking for and how they're feeling at the time. Its versatile in that respect.

The overall story itself isn't anything particularly new but the mangaka handles it in a slightly different way. The main character, Nagai, seems to have great trouble finding someone he likes and who'll like him at the same time. He loved his ex-girlfriend (he's bisexual) but, at the time they were together, she didn't fall for him, he's had a crush on his best friend and co-worker (male) for years but feels its hopeless when said friend gets married. And then he meets Honda, who likes him, but Nagai doesn't like him back.

Seems crazy and hopeless at first until Nagai's feelings start to change for Honda. For the first time, Nagai is in a mutual feeling relationship but now he's having trouble dealing with the fact that he's in a gay relationship (denial, major denial considering he's crushed on his friend for years). And now his ex-girlfriend and his recently divorced friend/co-worker realize that they like him and want him too...

Like I mentioned, its a fun read but your reactions to the events might change over time or based on how you're feeling. Plus Yamada-sensei's artwork isn't what I would consider to be great or lovely.. its more rough and can be a bit crazy with disportionate limbs and hair that has a mind of its own...

In the end, if you like a little crazy in your story and your artwork, you'll definitely want to read this. If you only like standard "good" artwork and can't stand when any characters can change their feelings at the drop of a hat, then you'll want to pass this by.

At first mention, this short series seems like a familiar set up. A man, in love with his best friend, drowns his sorrows at the bar after his friend gets married. There he meets someone who is mourning the loss of their love, the other person getting married. They hook up, and...

I thought it might just be a one-shot on the way to acknowledging love that's unexpected, but it's an unexpected detour into a long term relationship. It always surprises me when a yaoi manga goes deeper into exploring what desire means and how interpersonal relationships are affected by homosexuality.

Then this two volume set just got way too silly and started pitting the object of desire against the boyfriend of the main character and totally upended any sort of closure the main character got, without actually giving us a satisfying ending. There were subplots of intrigue, questions of “does my lover really care about me?” and actual gaddamn character growth. And yet! There was something too open ended for me.

But that's also a thing I've noticed about Japanese books, and it might have to do with philosophy, and literary culture. I've read several novels and many manga, so I have noticed that it's okay if the end is ambiguous, ranging from slightly to completely up in the air. More so than I've seen in western media, especially Hollywood. But I've also seen tragedy played as normal or inevitable.

Sure, it could be that there is still enough condemnation of the LGBT community that any clear happy ending is “unrealistic" or “lacking poetry" or to be blunt “encouraging a deviant lifestyle" and I certainly don't want to brush over the fact that most of the media I've consumed in the last 10 years has been queer, or I sought it out because I heard it was queer, and time and time again discovered there was no happily ever after for those who identified as (or were hinted to be) MOGAI.

This isn't exactly the case here, as the main couples biggest roadblock isn't society or their Damn Selves™ but the meddling third party. They aren't “out” by any stretch of the imagination, but quietly are arranging their lives and it's nice. Everything could be pretty good but for that third-wheel…

Review for Close The Last Door Vols 1&2 and Open The Door To Your Heart.

I enjoyed this more than I expected I would, however I would have preferred if Naiga had properly gotten over Saitou. I love stories where someone who's hung up on an unrequited love ends up falling happily in love with someone else.

As for Open The Door To Your Heart, I'm not usually one for "forbidden love" stories, but the way it was done here I actually liked it and felt for the two. I also absolutely loved how Naiga found out about them. Actually I think it was worth reading the series for that scene alone.

Seems a bit older than it is. Not supercute guys. A lot of whitespace. Saitou isn't very adorable to me. But, I like the plot (simple but realistically complicated at the same time) and the evolution of Nagai's self-awareness as well as his relationships with Saitou and Honda.

**Grammar**

This manga was perfect. There is comedy, romance, jealousy, a rival, the chars are awesome and the plot interesting.(Honda is 25 and Nagai 26)

All starts with Nagai, getting drunk at the bar after his friend Saitou's wedding. There he meets the friend of the bride, Honda. The two man start to talk and drink together and the other tells Nagai he will confort him. They are not gay, they have never been with a man, never thought about a man like that, Nagai only today found out he liked his friend, but they go to Honda's room and start kissing. There is passion, a strong attraction they never felt for anyone else, but they are not gay, this cant be much more than a conforting moment. They dont go all the way, they just kiss. From that day on, both their life will change forever, bcs they're starting to fall in love, and the readers can understand it, from the first time they kiss and how that happens.
The next day, we find out that Saitou's wife left him, and the younger man gets drunk and kisses Nagai. Nagai never thinks of doing something more and isnt sad when, the other guy tells him he thought he was his wife. The only thing he thinks about is going to see Honda, awwwwww.

In the middle of the night, after the kiss of the man he said he loved at start, he can only think about going to Honda, this says all for me XD

Honda understands that something happened btw Saitou and Nagai, but the older man doesnt wanna say what. Honda tells Nagai to confess to Saitou his feelings, and that if the things go bad he will confort him again, than he kisses him and Nagai leaves.
Honda really tries to not be jealous, but fails. The next morning Saitou and Honda go drinking, and while talking, the shorter man tells him, he kissed Nagai. Honda from the shock falls from the chair LOL
That same night, he goes to Nagai to ask him which kiss was better, and Nagai that is a devil and i adore him, tells him the kiss with Saitou was so good he was melting, Honda smirks and kisses him, and Nagai returns the kiss with the same passion, while Honda continues asking him, btw kisses, if something more happened btw him and Saitou.

Saitou, doesnt give up, he has started to like Nagai, but is too late for him. Days later, Saitou goes back to Nagai apartment, Nagai opens the door and the younger man hugs him, telling him if he can stay with him for some days. While they are hugging, or more like Saitou is, arrives Honda, that sees the scene and leaves telling them he is sorry for interrupting LOL
Nagai runs after him and tells him nothing is happening and asks him why he was there, and Honda asks him, if he still needs a motive to go see him. Praticlly he says that he thinks about them as a couple. They kiss.

Sometimes they fight too, bcs Honda is really jealous and possessive and thinks that Nagai still likes Saitou and all the time he sees them together, he gets angry. Nagai is the same, everytime he sees Honda speaking with a woman he gets jealous. The two man cant run anymore from their feelings. After one of their discussion, Nagai stops Honda from leaving and kisses him and they have oral sex, something they had never done before.

H:"Please say 'I'm coming' or something before you do", (he is coughing LOL)
N:"I thought i was gonna die...." ..."You're pretty good...."
H:"Did you and Saitou-kun never do that?"
N:"AH!OF COURSE NOT.."
Honda kisses Nagai
N:"You taste gross.."
H:"It's just YOU you're tasting."

They go all the way in the chapter 5.5, and i loved that scene, how Nagai takes the lead and does what he wants and tries to be cool, but he finds out soon that it hurts and they need change position and now is Honda taking the lead. I like how they are equals and not the usual couple, where the uke is useless and fragile, and the seme the possessive and commanding man. Here the uke is a queen ahahha and the seme is awesome too.

rolf i laughed was really funny.

Saitou still tries to kiss Nagai sometimes, but he fakes all the time that is a joke.

Other funny moments are: when Honda is w8 for Nagai, and the older man arrives with a taxi, he gets out and runs to Honda, the other man is happy till Nagai tells him he needs the money to pay the taxi LOL
or when they bet on who will get more chocolate on S.valentine's day ahhaha

Nagai and Honda are now a couple and all the time they fight is for Saitou's fault. For example in chapter 8, they fight bcs Nagai starts to talk about Saitou and how he thinks the other boy found a girlfriend, Honda that sometimes is insecure, thinks Nagai is jealous. Nagai tells him he is sorry, Honda tells him he is not really at fault, but the next day there is silence btw them.

The day after, at Honda's baseball match, Saitou and Nagai talk, and Nagai tells him that there is someone he loves.
After that Nagai says to Honda, that he is going to tell Saitou about them, they make up and have sex.

While having sex Nagai bites Honda and tells him "Mine"

When the next day, surprisingly, Saitou asks Nagai who is the person he loves, Nagai answers "you?", and Honda that is near them, doesnt speak with him for a week LOL
When Saitou leaves, Nagai tells Honda he is sorry but Honda ignores him and is really funny ahahha, they're so damn cute and an idiot couple XD
When Nagai tells Honda he is going on a business trip with Saitou, the younger man gets jealous and makes love to him till morning.

H:"You're the one that said not to pull out"
N:"I didnt say that!"
H:"you said it."
N:"I said i didnt say it, so i didnt say it!"
H:"You said it,so you did."
N:"Higher!"
H:"Okay,okay."

Honda is massaging him, bcs Nagai cant move and he needs to go on the trip LOL
During the business trip Nagai will confess to Saitou, that he is with Honda, and the other man will tell him he knows, so we are sure now that all the time with his visits and kisses he had tried to separate them. When Saitou pushes Nagai on the bed and tries to have sex with him, Nagai is furious and stops him, kicking him in the stomach and demanding him to be untied.
Nagai tells him he will always be there for him, if he will need help, but he cant be his, bcs he is already of Honda's. Saitou admits he knew he didnt have any chance at all.
When they come back and Honda is w8 at the airport to pick up Nagai, Saitou walks near him and tells him he wouldnt mind a threesome. Honda will barely let Nagai sleep for the next 2 days ahahhahahahha

We see 3 years pass and during this time, Nagai meets Honda's brothers, and they go live together.

H:"..I wonder why it was you..."..."Why dont I feel right without you..?"
N:"It'd be boring,if you knew."..."The more you wonder about 'why me',the more you're thinking ABOUT ME."
H:"...you're an awful man."
N:"But I'm YOUR man."

and then he bites Honda hand LOL

In one of the last chapters, when they are already living together, we see how for work they see each other only a few times, and i liked this scene:

H:"did you miss me?"
N:"If you'd left me alone much longer I might have cheated on you."
H:"Close call than..."

and they kiss, and we know for sure this is only a joke, bcs they are so deeply in love is impossible something like that could happen.Their bickering was awesome and also the teasing.

H:"Let's get married someday."
N:"what?...are you gonna ask me to bear your children too?"....."Oh-but you know, I think THAT would spill everything about us to your brothers."

Silence......

H:"....................sorry", Honda starts run...
N:"WHAT? THEY ALREADY KNOW? YOU TOLD THEM? HEY WAIT, HONDA!"

ahahhahah damn it, i laughed so much :D

In the last chapter we see Saitou, making fun of them. He writes to Honda that if he doesnt come in 30 minutes he will make Nagai his. Nagai doesnt know anything about this, and when he sees Honda arrive running at the bar he asks him what he is doing there. Honda asks him where is Saitou and Nagai tells him he had a date. He understands this was all a joke and makes Nagai read the message on his phone.

N:"You're really sweating. Did you run all the way here?"
H:"...I couldnt let him snatch you away."
N:"so? can you make me happy?"
H:"i'll do my best."

Loved this manga, i could read 10000 chapters about Nagai and Honda, bcs for me they are the perfect couple.

***being an old fart***
Back when I read scanlations this mangaka was one whose work I read so many times. It's strange to be collecting all these old titles that were sorta new when I started reading manga. Back then you could just not get any manga in my country. Belgium had some titles that got sold in the Netherlands but it was very much a niche thing. France always got the best stuff but I dropped that class as fast as I could. Also I already got weird looks for reading as many novels as I did. But that was sorta also seen as 'intellectual'. Being the only kid at home, school, city (?) who admitted to reading comics? And 'weird' ones from Japan and America in another language? No sirree.

Still sometimes I want to kick Past-Me because it's so much harder to find the ones I love! Or is it? Because back then you couldn't just hop onto the internet and order something. In fact I think I complained about that on a review once...

I love this mangaka, and was disappointed when the series seemed to be dropped but years later they finally released v. 2 so I got my wrap up. Funny story!

Close The Last Door hits a very generic line - there's nothing new here in this office romance and certainly the cliche cardboard characterizations don't help. At some point, it began to feel like the author was phoning it in, adding in the usual misunderstandings, miscommunication, and predatory alpha male behavior. I was bored.

Story: Nagai has a crush on Saitou - but on the day of Saitou's wedding, he recognizes he has to throw in the towel. But wait - the best man is quite something of an alpha male who takes an inexplicable interest in Nagai, taking him home when the man gets drunk. Poor Nagai is completely confused - especially when Saitou's new wife runs off and Saitou comes running to Nagai for comfort.

So, this felt like a 1980s Harlequin Romance with one lead character changing gender. Unfortunately, we never get a chance to like any of the guys - they are just so bland and stereotypical (weak Saitou, confused Nagai, commandeering). There are no nuances here and the attractions or puzzling rather than romantic. I'd have to say this is the literary equivalent of a paint-by-numbers kit for kids - a write by rote story we've seen a dozen times.

Very enjoyable yaoi manga about the developing relationship between Honda and Nagai. They have a one night stand after the wedding party of Saitou, a colleague Nagai realizes he's in love with. Soon that one night stand seems to become something more, but the couple are constantly bickering and getting into tiffs, largely because Nagai's feelings for Saitou are unresolved. Yugi Yamada deftly blends comedy, romance, and sexual passion in all the work of hers I've read.

I'm a bit torn when it comes to these two books. On the one hand, I don't really like love triangles, and especially not when there is one character I don't find appealing at all. On the other hand, there's the sex scenes which are both emotional and really, really hot, and I always appreciate stories where both characters are equally into it. So I just ignore the weird crush Nagai has on Saitou because come on, Honda is amazing, and enjoy the rest.

This is my first Yamada Yugi book and I admit I first thought I might not like the art because of the cover. But I was wrong. The art is actually nice and they are actually good looking! I also like how each scenes were delivered so fluidly it was like I was watching a movie. I recommend this manga!

I feel betrayed! I got Volume 1 for the great low price of 6.99 but once I got roped into this love tangle because it's not even a triangle it's so many sides, I discovered that the second volume is outrageously overpriced everywhere I look. I want answers!
