I read this book a few years ago, and re-read it but didn't get anything out of it. I would say it's a good resource for new coaches but not if you have a few years experience. There's nothing I could note that's helped, but I've coached football for 2 decades and already this book is outdated.
This is a good read for young coaches who are looking for some fresh perspectives and training ideas. I say this because many players that are entering coaching have not played under what Curneen labels as a modern coach. In short, a modern coach is aware of the social changes that have affected modern players mentality, the increased technical ability of today's players, and the sports science that is changing all athletic competitions. Most importantly, a modern coach is flexible, and willing to use training methods that challenge players on multiple levels in order to meet the technical, tactical, psychological, and physical demands of modern football.
Lastly, this is one book that "old school" coaches should read to challenge themselves to move forward in a evolving game. Coaches on the forefront of the sport will find affirmation in their methods with insights into some new ones.
A helpful review of what coaches need to incorporate into their planning and practices if they want to be successful. Curneen emphasizes how players and the game have changed over the years as players become stronger, faster, and more skillful. Because of this coaches and players need to focus on more than conditioning and skills. In addition to the physical, technical and tactical elements of the game, Curneen advocates the development of the mental aspect of players. Over the years I've coached I've heard guys described as having "soccer sense." Curneen suggests ways to work at developing "soccer sense" in players. For myself the most helpful part of the book are some of the drills he suggests using to develop the mental aspect of the game.
Excellent Coaching Resource Regardless of Player's Age
I read in one of the prior reviews that this book should be geared towards high school players and above. I coach a U12 girls team and after following some of the training sessions and philosophies found in the book the teams level of play went up by leaps and bounds. This is an excellent coaching book for anyone whose serious about pushing their team to play as a cohesive unit anywhere on the field. Thanks for an enjoyable read, my coaching is much stronger since picking up your book.
Gary seems to have seen and done it all in soccer, and this book is a deep insight into how to make soccer teams 'tick' and become successful as a team. Would recommend to anyone, not only wanting to learn basics of soccer coaching, but also more in depth information too.
