About the author

Pierre Peju was born into a family of booksellers from Lyons. He read philosophy at the Sorbonne, and while he was a student, he became involved in the famous demonstrations of May 1968. Pierre Peju is a teacher of Philosophy at the Lycee International of Grenoble. He is also the Director of Studies at the International College of Philosophy.

Pierre Peju is the author of ''The Girl from the Chartreuse'', published as ''La Petite Chartreuse'' in Peju’s native France, and this was also the title of the movie of the book, which was released in 2005. This novel received great acclaim in France, and won the Prix du Livre Inter for 2003. He is also the author of ''Clara’s Tale''(2007).

Leisure, light, literature: true happiness!



Gustave Flaubert asserted Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.' But can literature seriously be a substitute for life? Or can reading at last help to live, to soothe, to becalm? Are books the straws to grasp in the realm of silence, weariness and despair?

Éva is ten when she ends up under the van of Étienne Vollard, a bookseller. The shocking event awakens demons from the childhood of the insomniac bachelor. The lonesome man has always been an outsider and never found happiness or peace, except like Thomas à Kempis, in a corner with a book. He recognizes in the silent, unconscious child a fellow-sufferer in solitude and, overwhelmed with guilt, continues to visit her in the hospital. In between his wanderings in the mountains of La Grande Chartreuse, he talks and reads out for hours to her, fragments and quotes from the numerous books he has read in his life spontaneously bubbling up from his phenomenal memory. As Éva’s troubled mother appears unable to supply the necessary care, Vollard goes through great lengths to revitalize the girl. However Eva’s soul languishes and a tragic denouement seems inevitable.



With this slender, philosophical and intimate novel Pierre Péju wrote a magnificent and delicate ode to literature, childhood and nature, as well as a poised exploration of the darker sides of life and existential loneliness. A moving and quiet story, gracefully and serenely phrased.

Running Away

“Anything can happen now, including the worst. The worst is merely one among a host of possibilities, a hyena lurking among ambient trivia.” The hyena is robust; he is patient; and eventually he prevails. He cares not about age, or virtue, or one’s contribution or role in life. The hyena is omnivorous.

The Girl From the Chartreuse is a highly cinematic exploration of the randomly inevitable (and inevitably random) condition of life. There is no safety in routine nor in hapless activity. A sort of unfounded hope - in one’s efforts, in the next generation, in doing the right thing - may sustain us in normal times. But the unexpected is by definition not normal. It rips away our armour of complacent contentment.

We each have our own way of coping with the hyena’s unexpected inevitability - change of place, immersion in fiction and fantasy, scholarship, personal devotion, ritualistic consumption, or religious ritual. These are all attempts at escape whether we recognise it or not. But there is no escape possible, no insurance available for the breakdown - not the breakdown of death but the breakdown of life for which only death may be the solution.

Experience will eventually show that running away is senseless. For Etienne, Peju’s protagonist, this is a sort of nihilistic epiphany of “a paradoxical nothingness, for there it was, right there in front of him, in all its glory. Hundred per cent nothingness. Uncomplicated nothingness. No history, no fuss. An illusory, undemanding entity.” At that point, no matter what course of action is decided upon, it requires courage to carry it out.

كيف يمكن الكتابة عن القراءة !
الامر معقد ؛هل يمكن الحديث عن طقوس الشراء وظروف الشراء والتى تجعل من الحصول على كل كتاب قصة مختلفة مغامرة للحصول علية خصوصا لو كان الكتاب غير متوفر أو ظفرت به من باعة الكتب القديمة ...يبدو أن المغامرة الاولى للقراءة هى الحصول على الكتاب !
بعدها تبدأ الرحلة أنت والكتاب فى جلسة منفردة لا أستطيع ان اقرأ فى الضوضاء هذا لقاء حميمي خاص جدا أنت والنص ؛يمكن اعطاء أمثلة لذلك بالحديث عن قراءة الرواية .
برغم انى أحاول ان اقوم بتنويع فيما اقرأ لكن أحب فن الرواية هذا السفر والانزياح مع الابقاء على الحسد فى الغرفة والسفر لغرفة فى شمال مدريد أو ضيق زنزانه فى تزامامارت أو شاطيء جزيرة مع زوربا ....كل محاولة للدخول فى عالم الرواية هى سفر تذوق لطعم مختلف تجربة جديدة اسئلة تجارب أشخاص ؛كلما اقرأ فى هذا الفن ينضم لى هؤلاء لابطال بحكايتهم الجميلة وكأنهم اصدقاء قابلتهم منذ زمن فحكى لي حكايته بكل عذوبة فقبته كما هو بكل ما به فتعرفت على هيبا فى رحلته وحمزاوى فى الشحاذ ودرت أبحث فى حارة ضيقة وسط صوت صوفى خاشع عن عاشور الناجى المتلحف بالعزلة الباحث عن الخفة ومفارقة الارضي !
كان انضمام هؤلاء الابطال فى الروايات كأيلينى فى أحد أعمال خوان مياس و تضحك لعفوية ندى عبد القادر فى فرج لرضوى عاشور أو مريمة وعبد وحسن و الخ من الشخصيات التى رسمهم الروائى ببراعة لا تستطيع أن تغادر الذاكرة بسهولة !
المهم ..بعد ان أوضحت لك حبي لقراءة الروايات خصوصا فى فترات الكساد عن قراءة التاريخ!
وأوضحت كم هو الامر معقد الحديث عن القراءة الفعل ذاته اي صورة القاريء وقد انفرد بالكتاب فى غرفة وحيدا يهتز طربا من وقع عبارة جميلة أو فقرة مميزة أو سؤال فأس !
كل هذا قد يكون عذر ان القراءة لا يمكن ان تصفها فى كلمات هذه هى الخدعة ان القراءة عملية تأمل فى نص مكتوب لكنك عندما تريد أن تقرأ القراءة تتمنع عليك تجد نفسك عاجزا عن الاجابة وتقديم نصور متقن لأنك ساعتها تتحدث عن عملية شديدة التركيب !
أحاول أن أستعيد التركيز : لو أعتبرنا ما سبق مقدمة فأنا قرأت اليوم رواية فتاة من شارتر لبيير بيجى صدرت عن سلسلة الجوائز ...أعجبتنى استمتعت بها أحب الروايات التى يكون احد الابطال فأر قارض للكتب ؛ يقول الراوى عن بطل الرواية فولار . «لم يكن شكله هو سبب قسوتنا الوحيد، كان فولار أيضاً يبدو محاطاً بهالة من الوحدة تنساب من عينيه الداكنتين وحركاته ومن بسمته المضيئة... لم يكن يبتسم لنا بل لشيء ما أكثر اتساعاً ..كانت ابتسامة العزلة».هذه العبارة وردت بعد الحديث عن عزلته بين الكتب كان يبتسم وهو يقرأ !
هذا المعتزل دودة القراءة الذى يصدم فتاة فى الطريق :"«في الخامسة مساء تحت مطر نوفمبر البارد، اندفعت بسرعة شاحنة صغيرة يقودها صاحب مكتبة يُدعى إتيان فولار، في الشارع لتصطدم بشدة ومباشرة بطفلة صغيرة... عنف الصدمة قذف إلى أعلى الجسد الصغير الذي برز من حيث لا يدري أحد»" لكن هذا الحادث المفتوح سيفتح عين فولار القاريء والغارق بين النصوص فى مكتبته فى شارتر الى هذه الطفلة !فهو يملك ذاكرة مدهشة تمكنه من استرجاع النص المطبوع واستعادة آلاف الكلمات... شكل الصفحة والطباعة ورائحة الورق والصمغ وحتى الفراغات وعلامات الوقوف.

سيجلس بجانبها يحكى لها عشرات الكتب التى ظل طوال عمره غارقا فيها من مكتبتهلمواجهة الحياة يواجه الموت !
لا أعرف اختصار الاحداث والحديث عن الحبكة وغيرها أنا أغرق مع كل صفحة ثمة مقاطع أعيد قرائتها بصوت مرتفع تحتاج الى الحركة لا السكون بل الى الطرب واشراك الاذن فى متعة الاستماع للنص ..
اي محب للقراءة سيحب ان يقرأ اصدقاء الكتب كالرئيس فى رواية زوربا سيجد جزء منه يحكية الكاتب سيبحث عن تشابة أو اختلاف سيتأمل سيغلق الصفحات لدقائق ليغرق فى صمت التفكير ؛ سيصمت ثم يضحك وبعدها يكتب كل هذا القراءة قادرة ان تقوم به لذلك قلت ابتداء والتماسا للعذر الامر معقد والحديث عن قراءة القراءة مغامرة غير مأمونة العواقب !
لانها محاولة للقبض على لحظة وقوع الكلمة على العين وبعدها تصل للعقل فتأتى ردة الفعل مفعمة بالتضامن وقد يصل التضامن الجسدي الى دمعة فى العين مع نهاية الرواية !

ماهذه الحالة من الصمت التي انتابتني عقب انتهائي من (فتاة من شارتر) لبيير بيجي....؟؟
أتكون تلك اللطمة التي تأتينا على غير انتظار لنفيق مما نحن فيه؟ أم لأنه قال الحقيقة دون واربة ونفذ إلى أماكن لم نكن لنتخيل أن يصل إليها غيرنا...
هناك في هذا الركن القصي يقبع داخلنا هذا الكائن الرافض النافض للمسؤولية الذي يبحث عن اختفاء واختباء من كل شيء وأي شيء يمس حريته القديمة..تلك الحرية التي ولدت في الرحم قبل الروح وانقضت عليها بمجرد أن تنفست...البعض يستطيع أن يحجم هذا الكائن وغير من حقيقته ويلونه بألوان ماتفرضه الحياة من ضغوط ومسؤوليات وجب علينا مجابهتها ويبقى البعض أسير البحث عن الحرية المزعومة أو عن مسؤول عنا يحمل عنا أوزارنا وأوزار غيرنا التي حَملناها وحُمّلناها دون أن نسعى لذلك أحياناً وبأيدينا الحمقاء أحياناً أخرى...إن الهروب أبداً لن يأتي بنتيجة...والوحدة لن تحل مشكلة ..لأننا ببساطة ورغم كل شيء خلقنا من تواصل واتصال لو توقفنا عنه ماكنا نحن..ولهذا نحن هنا على الإنترنت وفي الفيس بوك..نرحل منا إلينا..ونستدعي الوحدة وننبذها..لنظل أسرى البين بين...

صومعه‌ی کوچک داستان اتین ولار کتاب فروش و ترز بلانشو یک مادر تنها رو روایت می‌کنه که هر دو در تنهایی خودشون غرق هستن ولی یک تصادف، تصادف ولار با دختر کوچک ترز باعث میشه اونها در مسیر زندگی هم قرار بگیرن، مثل یک چهار راهی که دو ماشین با مسیرهای مختلف لحظاتی به هم میرسن. اوایل کتاب یکم مبهم و خسته کننده هست ولی کم‌کم خوب میشه و یکم غم هم توی کتاب وجود داره.ه

Die vernachlässigte Tochter einer psychisch instabilen Frau wird aus eigener Unachtsamkeit von einem Buchhändler über den Haufen gefahren.

Dieser kurze französische Roman berichtet in erster Linie aus dem Leben des Buchhändlers, geht aber auch kurz auf das Schicksal der Mutter und ihrer Tochter ein.

Die Geschichte wird in einem sehr melodramatischen Stil in übermäßig poetischer Sprache erzählt.

Insgesamt hat mir dieses Buch nicht viel gegeben, da der Plot teilweise vorhersehbar und insgesamt nicht besonders aufregend war. Bedingt durch den Schreibstil fühlte sich die Lektüre für mich wie Waten durch Melasse an. Für mich kam außerdem erschwerend hinzu, dass ich die Geschichte als emotional niederdrückend empfand.
Aus meiner Sicht also lesbar, aber keine Leseempfehlung.

The neglected daughter of a mentally unstable woman is run over by a bookseller due to her own carelessness.

This short French novel primarily tells the story of the bookseller's life, but also deals briefly with the fate of the mother and her daughter.

The story is told in a very melodramatic style in overly poetic language.

Overall, I didn't enjoy this book very much as the plot was predictable in parts and not particularly exciting overall. Due to the writing style, reading it felt like wading through molasses to me. To make matters worse for me, I also found the story emotionally depressing.
So from my point of view it was readable, but not recommended reading.

Existentialist teenage crap, that’s what this was.

Sorry, but seriously. . . {Rolls eyeballs}

I have nothing against angst, but this really was just puerile. Étienne Vollard is a bookseller. He owns a bookstore called “Le Verbe Être” (The Verb “To Be”--a little wink and nod at Sartre’s L’Être et le Néant there). One day, a panicked little girl, Éva, rushes out onto the street and right into the path of Étienne’s van. He brakes, but it’s raining, and he crashes into her frail little body. Her mother, Thérèse, was late picking her up from school. And so it goes… the guilt-ridden Étienne goes to the hospital to find out what happens to the girl, and his life and theirs become entwined.

It would actually be reasonably interesting except that these characters are not characters. They’re emo sock-puppets, personifications of Péju’s notions, tissue-thin constructions into which he’s spewed his watery jism. So it turns out that Étienne has a photographic memory for books that he reads. Every single sentence, every single word he’s ever read is lodged in his head, torturing him every night as he tosses around unable to sleep. Thérèse Blanchot (blanc, white, blank, *nudge nudge wink wink*) is a lost, vacant soul who wanders around aimlessly all day looking to lose herself. She carries with her a spiral-bound notebook into which she will write the occasional vacuous phrase that comes to her mind. When looking at clothes in a department store, for example, she writes:

Les corps viennent du future afin d’enfiler et de déformer les beaux vêtements neufs, afin d’enfiler and de salir les sous-vêtements bien blancs. C’est triste et sans importance.

Bodies will come to slip on and deform these beautiful new clothes, to slip on and dirty these white undergarments. It’s sad and meaningless.

After Étienne’s van filled with books knocks down poor little Éva, she goes into a coma and when she wakes up, she’s mute. She’s lost her capacity to form words.

Geddit? Geddit? It’s all about words: too many, too few, or none at all. Groan!

All this might even be halfway bearable if Péju would write with some semblance of rigour. But noooo… He has to churn out stuff like this:

Nu, complètement nu, blanchâtre et roux, couvert de bleus et d’écorchures, il se versa un verre de whisky, un deuxième, puis un troisième qu’il emporta sous sa douche. Bientôt, sous les jets brûlants, dans la vapeur, il s’accroupit, se tassa sur lui-même, se recroquevilla, grosse boule de viande triste sur laquelle l’eau ruisselait, à l’intérieur de laquelle l’alcool coulait.

Naked, completely naked, pale and red, covered with bruises and scratches, he poured himself a glass of whiskey, a second one, then a third which he brought with him into the shower. Soon, under the hot jets of water, in the steam, he crouched, folded in on himself, curled up, a large ball of sad flesh, over which the water streamed, and inside of which the alcohol flowed.

Even the plot is completely ludicrous. At a halfway point, we switch to a first-person narrative. Some unknown narrator tells the story of his encounter with Étienne when they were in school together for a brief period of time. Étienne was bullied by all the other school kids, including this mysterious narrator, WHO NEVER FIGURES AGAIN IN THE REST OF THE NOVEL. WTF??!!!

Does this lead anywhere? Unfortunately, most unfortunately, yes. Towards the end of the novel, Étienne goes looking for Thérèse who has abandoned her child to go find work. He looks for her in a large mall where he believes she has found a job, and wandering amid the advertising:

Il découvrait tant d’inscriptions déconcertantes qu’il en oubliait qu’il était là pour retrouver Madame Blanchot. Il la cherchait bien sûr, mais se laissait retarder par cette lecture simpliste et sauvage; alors qu’il était arrivé avec l’esprit brouillé et le coeur lourd, Vollard se laissait emporter par cette insoupçonnable, mais très soutenable légèreté. Il y avait même une jubilation à laisser toutes ces formules publicitaires lui en mettre plein la vue, plein la tête.

He discovered so many disconcerting phrases that he forgot that he was there to find Madam Blanchot. Yes, he was indeed searching for her, but he let himself get delayed by these words so simplistic and savage; and so it came to pass that with his clouded spirit and his heavy heart,Vollard let himself get carried away all unsuspectingly by that easy lightness. It was even a joy to let these advertising slogans fill his sight, fill his mind.

PUH-leese!

No, it doesn’t end there. But you get the idea, what little of it there is. I think I wrote something like that when I was pimply adolescent. Oh, the horror, the horror!

So, yes, this svelte volume tells a story, sad little girl, sad man who runs into that girl in his van and sad mother of little girl who child welfare should have tapped before events brought them all together, tragically. There are other, mostly sad too, peripheral characters who like mud and thatch chock the seams and cracks, but the intimacy of our emphasis lies with an unspeaking child and a troubled child-man speaking in books. It's the books, man, it's the books whose the real tragedy here - this thought keeps intruding on my revelry of this simple yet sanguine story.

Allegory is where I'm going with this; the books, reading minds, physical place and "being" of books, that's what's really and tragically being mourned here; what will we be if they disappear?

The writing mostly spare still reached heights while describing Chartreuse valleys, gales and peaks, the flora and atmospheric conditions. We also peer into Vollard's mind (the man) which too is landscaped by high and low windy redoubts. He's our "Hero with a Thousand Faces" man who goes out into the wilderness and spleens himself returning cleansed - he reduces and clarifies - he steps into fate with a feathery appeal; he is no more.

هذا الرجل الهاديء الذي كان ينفق أي إنفعال يشعر به في التمشي حتى التعب رغم ضخامة بنيته
إتخذ من الكتب جدارا سميكا يعزله عن الحياة وكانت له هكذا
أعادت له إيفا التي صدمها بسيارته دون قصد لون الحياة لأيام مؤقتة كأنها جاءت لتخبره .. انظر ماذا فاتك وأنت حبيس كتبك

At some point in the book a narrator (we don't even why he's there but okay) describes vollard's bookshop, and there's a lot of portrait of great authors : all are dead white men. Right. It's not a classic if it's not written by white old dead men. Brb vomiting.

The characters are bland, the prose is so purple it gave me headaches, and the story in itself is close to non-existent. What a scam.

Tl;dr : didn't like it, don't recommend it.

Scappare

Eva è una bambina che fugge per prendere le distanze dalla dolorosa assenza materna.
Una bambina, minuta come la piccola Chartreuse, a cui il destino ruba l'infanzia, .
Therese, madre per caso e con peso; donna che non vuole legami perchè non trova pace se non allontanandosi.
Etienne Vollard, "trafficante di droga letteraria", a causa di un terribile incidente, è strappato dalle pagine in cui è solito rifugiarsi.
Un uomo possente che come la montagna della Chartreuse nasconde una quantità incredibile di anfratti, inquietanti ed attraenti al tempo stesso .

Ma non si fugge dalla tragica tristezza di questa storia che fin dalle prime righe ti sbatte sotto gli occhi un dramma violento.
Una storia di solitudini che ha suoni, colori e sapori di una poesia.
Una storia dove silenzi e parole si sfidano a duello per conquistare un ruolo da protagonista.

I don't know if I like this book. It has some great moments and the atmosphere in the opening chapters is vivid, even luminous despite the confusion, terror and loneliness it depicts. Then there's the awkward middle section where the author tells us about his own encounters with one of the characters. The final act is...bleak and sad, but I'm not sure what to make of it all or the way in which 'literature itself' (how I hate blurb and review writers who use that phrase), one of the themes of the book, is ultimately implicated. Peju is obviously trying to write lyrical, virtuosic prose but at least in translation it often comes across as simply overheated ('dessicated seed'?). A very mixed experience, in short.

"Cold" is the word at the forefront of my mind to use to describe this book.
The coldness of Thérèse in her failure to love her child.
The coldness of Étienne's barran loneliness.
The coldness of Éva's silence.
The story entwined you in the lives of the above 3 people, and you will them all to "do better".
I applaud the author to write in such a nature that appears almost shallow. The time spent reading the book I felt the story somewhat wash over me with no lingering effect. It is only upon finishing it that I find it hard to dismiss it, nor say anything remarkable about it!
Very much one that will take me a while to figure out my own emotions of it in days to come.

يا لحزن فولار و حزن الكتب و حزن الضياع .. قصة ذات معاني عديدة تترك بك أثراً، تجد فيها من هو أكثر عشقاً للكتب و أكثر ميلاً للعزلة و مشاعر متضاربة مفاجئة تتبع سير حدثٍ يشدّك حتى النهاية .

الذروة كانت في المقدمة.. و بالتالى الانهيار يأتي في المنتصف!

بداية رائعة تماما للقصة.. السائق الذي يصدم فتاة و الوقع النفسي للسائق و الأم بعد الحادثة و الفتاة قبل الحادثة..

البداية تدفعك تجاه عمل أدبي يتحدث عن أولئك اللامبالين في الحياة.. إنهم كغريب ألبير كامو..

السائق.. فولار.. شخصية عاشت حياتها وسط الكتب.. كانت تجد لذتها في الانغماس بين الصفحات.. فولار كان يعيش بشكل شبه وحيد بين أرفف مكتبته.. لكن كعادة كل من ينغمس في الكتب فإنه يتحول إلى كائن لا علاقة له بالحياة..
يتحول فولار إلى مخلوق متوحش .. بالمعنى الاجتماعي لكلمة متوحش.. إنه ليس لديه أصدقاء.. لا يستطيع الحديث مع الناس.. يعاني من الأرق الدائم..
ببساطة فولار كان ميتا في جسد انسان يتحرك..

على الجانب الآخر.. تريز.. والدة الفتاة .. هى أي شخصية لا تشعر بالانتماء للحياة.. إنها تشاهد الحياة تمر بها كشريط سينمائي و هى جالسة في مقعد الجمهور.. إنها لا تشعر بأي رابطة تجاه أي شيء.. أو أي مكان.. او حتى أي انسان حتى لو كان هذا الانسان هو ابنتها..
تريز كانت أيضا متوحشة.. لكن بأسلوبها الشخصي.. كانت مندفعة.. تفعل كل ما يمر بخيالها.. ولوا وجود ابنتها لقطعت علاقتها بالمدينة و سافرت..
تريز كانت ميتة في جسد انسان يتحرك أيضا..

ثم تأتي الطفلة الصغيرة.. إيفا.. إيفا الصغيرة ليست لها علاقة بالحياة أيضا.. الشيء الوحيد الذي يربطها بالحياة هو وجود والدتها.. و في تلك اللحظة التي شعرت فيها إيفا بعدم وجود تلك الرابطة فإنها تعرضت للصدمة و تاهت في زحام المدينة لتسقط تحت عجلات شاحنة فولار..


المشاعر النفسية لدى أبطال الرواية كانت مرسومة بعناية شديدة.. بيير بيجي استطاع أن يتغلغل داخل كل شخص فيهم ليظهر كيف هو الشعور باللانتماء.. كيف هو الشعور بالخوف من الحياة.. كيف هو الشعور بالرغبة في الانزواء..
تلك التفاصيل الصغيرة التي جعلتني التهم الثلث الأول من الرواية التهاما...

تعاطفت مع فولار .. فهو كائن مسالم .. إنه لا يريد الحياة وسط البشر.. لكن تلك الحادثة المفاجئة التي ارتكبها كانت لها وقع الماء البارد على رأسه.. لقد أجبرته على الانخراط في عالم البشر.. لكنه لا يعرف كيف.. إنه لم يتعلم أبدا كيف! ... و هنا تأتي قمة المفارقة.. ان يكون لقاء فولار الأول مع الحياة من خلال شبح الموت!

لكن فجأة و بدون سابق إنذار أجد الرواية بعد ثلثها الأول تتحول تحولا عجيبا!
وجدت الرواية تنتقل من الحديث بضمير الغائب (أي على لسان راوية خارجي) إلى الحديث بصيغة المتكلم (أي على لسان أحد الناس المشاركة في الأحداث).. هذا الانتقال الغريب تم في فصلين أو ثلاثة فيما أذكر للحديث عن طفولة فولار.. تلك الفصول التي لم يكن لها أي فائدة تذكر على الإطلاق..
كانت مقحمة بشكل شديد الفظاظة! كأن الكاتب لم يستطع معرفة كيف يتحدث عن طفولة فولار في سياق مناسب فاختار أن يأتي بأحد أصدقاء فولار و يحكي لنا عن تلك الطفولة في عدة صفحات .. ثم فجأة كما ظهر الصديق يعود مرة أخرى و يختفي فجأة!!
تلك الفصول أنقصت من حماستي بشدة... خصوصا مع شعوري بانها لم تضف أي شيء للقصة..

عيب آخر... الإفراط المستفز في التأكيد على حب فولار للكتب.. و إقحام كلمة "كتاب" بأي شكل و بأي طريقة وسط أي جملة... حسنا.. فولار يحب الكتب و لديه ذاكرة قوية.. عرفت هذا... لماذا لا ننتقل إلى نقطة أخرى؟!! لا.. الكاتب مصر على تكرار الحديث عن هذا في كل فكرة في الكتاب!
شعرت به أشبه بأولئك الأطفال الذين يتحدثون على الفيس بووك والجود ريدز عن "حب القراءة" و "القراءة حياة" و ما شابه! ابتذال ما بعده ابتذال!

العيب الأهم أن الكاتب لم يوضح لنا لماذا كانت شخصية فولار و تريز بهذه الطريقة؟؟
كيف تحول فولار إلى تلك الشخصية المتوحدة العاشقة للكتب؟ ما العوامل التي دفعته لهذا؟؟
ماذا عن تريز ؟ ما الذي جعلها شخصية لامبالية؟ كيف فقدت انتماءها لكل شيء بهذا الشكل؟
تلك الأسئلة لم ندرك إجابتها أبدا..

على أي حال انتهيت من الرواية و لم أشعر بالندم أبدا.. بل على العكس الرواية منحتني مشاعر مختلطة.. و هذا شيء جيد لم يحدث منذ فترة..
ولولا تلك الفصول المقحمة في وسط الرواية عمدا لكنت قد استمتعت بالكتاب أكثر و منحته تقييما أعلى..

Malheureusement, je ne peux pas dire que j'ai entièrement accroché avec ce récit. L'histoire avait pourtant de quoi me plaire dans le sens où nous suivons un libraire, véritable boulimique de livres et hypermnésique avec ça (se souvient d'absolument tout ce qu'il lit, à la virgule près ! ), et j'ai tendance à particulièrement aimé les histoires mettant en scène des amoureux de la lecture.

Mais voilà, l'histoire est avant tout un drame, celui de l'accident de la petite fille qui va faire voler en éclat le peu d'équilibre que semblait avoir Vollar dans sa vie. Et bien sur à partir de là, on assiste inéluctablement à la descente aux enfers.

Première chose qui m'a chiffonné dans ce roman c'est la mère de l'enfant et son incapacité criante à être une bonne mère. Cette femme m'a profondément révulsée, mais de manière quasi viscérale, c'est dire ! Du coup j'avais beaucoup de mal à apprécier ma lecture lorsque l'on devait suivre son point de vue. Je m'en serais bien passé !

De plus, en plein milieu du récit, on voit arriver un 4ème personnage, sans prévenir, qui se mets à raconter l'impact qu'à eu le libraire Vollar sur sa vie et ce, depuis son enfance. Bon, j'ai été plutôt prise de court par l'arrivée subite de ce récit dans le récit, mais j'ai été plutôt conquise par ce jeune homme et je prenais plaisir à le voir évoluer en parallèle de Vollar. Oui mais voilà, autant le personnage arrive sans prévenir, autant il disparaît tout aussi abruptement !! D'un coup son récit s'est terminé et ce, sans véritable conclusion (on ne sait pas ce qu'il devient, on ne sait pas ce qui ce passe pour lui après Vollar, rien) et le tout m'a laissé complètement frustrée ! Ce récit aurait mérité d'être allongé, d'être terminé proprement, il méritait même un livre à lui tout seul tant je l'ai trouvé fascinant !

Enfin la fin du roman, que l'on sent venir quasiment dès le réveil de la petite fille, laisse un goût amer de gâchis dans la bouche.

Pour conclure, si j'ai aimé le style de l'auteur et sa manière de construire ses personnages, le roman m'a laissé bien trop mitigée pour que je puisse sincèrement l'apprécier. Je dois dire que j'hésite à jeter un oeil au film, à voir. Si je finis par le regarder j'en ferai une critique en tout cas.

I bought this book last part of July 2006 and finished reading it by the third part of August.

As much as I would like to post the “truisms” I’ve read in the book, it wouldn’t give justice to the essence of the composition for it would be quite limiting.

There’s nothing new with the plot of the story. However, from an ordinary incident lives were forever changed by an extra ordinary fate.

Hep! Before you jump into conclusion like this book is some kind of inspirational thingy piece of writing – it’s NOT! That’s why this book grew on me.

The dark truth of life in its rawest, ugliest and hopelessness of the situations and characters made this book my reading worthwhile. And what made it so beautiful, though, it was narrative in pose and the ability of the author not moralized the whole thing.

Dark. Raw. Sad. Yet it holds a whole damn grain of truth what ordinary living really is in a “REAL” ordinary world.

I'd give this book 3 and a half if I had the choice. I enjoyed it, but I'm uncertain how to rate it. A strange little book and because it is kind of about books and how lonely people can be (and it describes that pretty well), I did in fact think it was worth the read. However, I would have liked to read it in the original french and I would have liked to know all the literary references (but that's not the book's fault).

The bookshop is called 'The Verb To Be'. How cute is that? I think this is one of those books that definitely read better in its original language. The translation's not particularly atrocious. It's just I think you have to be in a certain mood to understand and enjoy the book. As for what mood, perhaps, misanthropy mixed with the subliminal appreciation for mountains and the ability to exult in the mundane.

C'est un avis assez partagé, 24H après avoir lu ce livre. Un sentiment de trop peu je suppose,l'histoire aurait pu être grande, belle inoubliable... ce n'est pas tout à fait le cas. C'est un live simple avec un thème compliqué, la fuite, échapper à ses responsabilités à sa vie, au monde... Et finalement l'histoire en elle même se prête vraiment bien à l'exploration de ce thème: des personnages qui se rencontrent autours d'une petite fille blessée au sens propre dans un accident de voiture et blessée psychologiquement par sa mère enfant. La mère justement, une forme de Peter Pan-Antigone, fille-femme, qui refuse de grandir et essaie de ne pas se laisser toucher par la vie mais voilà : la vie la rattrape avec son lot de sentiments de culpabilité face à une responsabilité parentale, un rôle que la société veut lui imposer et qu'elle refuse d'endosser: donc voilà plein de rébellion, de sentiments forts mais un traitement assez succin et c'est dommage. L'écriture elle même manque de puissance et on retrouve quelque chose que je trouve frustrant dans les romans moyens français, c'est le besoin de répéter des segments de phrases... Bon quand l'effet stylistique est réussi ça va, ça lance un echo ça donne une résonance mais comme pour beaucoup de choses, l'exces de repetition tue l'effet et c'est un peu énervant. Bref, en gros, livre moyen, triste sans doute mais loin du livre du siècle ça c'est certain. Ce livre a fait l'objet d'un film, et il a de grandes qualités visuelles je pense, mais bon il manque de profondeur.

Those who know what it is to be unbearably saddened by the experience of reading - and long for it - will find a sympathetic voice in Péju. The Girl from the Chartreuse revolves around the power and symbolism of words and tragic childhoods.

The novella opens and closes with terribly visual scenes of near-death experiences. The first has the protagonist, Vollard, a bookshop keeper en route to his store with a van load of books, collide and nearly kill a young girl, Éva. This accident and the girl's long convalescence allows for a pseudo-relationship to form between Vollard, Éva and her escapist mother, Thérèse.

But it is Vollard that Péju focuses on. Péju veers from the story to switch into a first person homage to the character, which consumes the middle third of the book. Do not let this distract or discourage you. Péju's purpose is not only to embellish and glorify Vollard as a lumbering heroic character but to emphasize what it is that Vollard represents: literature itself. We are constantly reminded of the impact books have and that "the only true reader is the thoughtful reader."

The second piece of visceral imagery depicts a bungee jump that Vollard strives to take and accomplishes with spectacular ineptness. But such leaps of faith are, in all our lives, necessary, if unwanted. For Vollard it will eventually lead to freedom, for the reader to thoughtfulness. Recommended.

Trois êtres solitaires qui se rencontrent, ça ne pouvait que mal finir. Jusqu'au bout, on espère une quelconque rédemption pour au moins un des personnages, mais on espère en vain.

Il s'agit bien d'une méditation sur la lecture - qui dans le cas du libraire Vollard, frise le pathologique: Boulimie de lecture pour oublier, pour vaincre ses insomnies, avec pour seul résultat de pouvoir en réciter par coeur des passages. Donc une simple reproduction, sans conséquence sur la personnalité du libraire, qui au contact des livres n'évolue pas.

En fait, le vrai lecteur, c'est le narrateur qui prend la parole dans la 2e partie et qui s'efface sans pour autant disparaître dans la 1e et la 3e. C'est lui qui, d'une manière biaise, a été initié adolescent à la lecture par son camarade Vollard, et qui, en racontant son histoire, lui rend un dernier hommage.

Après celle de Parme, une autre chartreuse entre donc en littérature française. Et c'est un des meilleurs livres que j'ai lu depuis longtemps.

Ne mogu započeti čitati drugu knjigu dok mi se ne slegnu dojmovi o ovoj knjizi. Prekrasan i tužan kratki roman. To je priča o vezi triju bića, mladoj ženi koja nije željela biti majka, koju je odgovornost prema malenoj kćerki gušila i morala je uvijek nekud ''nestati'', djevojčici koja nikad nije iskusila roditeljsku ljubav i knjižaru koji je od svog ranog djetinjstva bio samo usredotočen na knjige pa su ga svi zbog toga zlostavljali.

U jedno hladno, kišno kasnojesensko predvečerje na širokoj aveniji u malome francuskom gradu okruženom alpskim masivom, usamljeni knjižar Étienne Vollard svojim kombijem pregazi djevojčicu. U bolnici upoznaje Thérèsu, njezinu otuđenu majku, koja sanja o bijegu i životu bez obveza. Vollard počinje svakodnevno posjećivati djevojčicu Evu i uz uzglavlje joj priča priče iz knjiga.

Ne pamtim kad sam zadnji put čitala knjigu u kojoj su baš svi likovi žrtve tragične sudbine. Péju me oduševio usporedbama i samim stilom.

I love it so much as its description was amazing and the character he took are common ones but little taken in fiction! I feel sorry for his suffering childhood and for his fate! it was amazing and you need to read it! I love the name of his library "Etre" to be as books are the main things in our life and suitable for my quote "Je Pense do Je suis" I think he considers reading as our existence! love it melodramatic end!

بين امرأة تريد الفرار دوماً ورجل ضخم لا يقرأ الكتب بل يلتهمها في نهم يوجد جسد ضئيل يقبع في المنتصف ، سئ الحظ منذ ولادته وحتي لحظة تعرضه لحادث الاصطدام
اكثر شئ أعجبني بالروايه هو الوصف النفسي لكل شخصيه من الشخصيات والوصف للأحداث والمواقف التي تتعرض لها فذلك الحادث لم يؤثر علي الفتاه فقط بل وعلي كل من اهتم لأمرها او لم يهتم بل صدف وجوده ضمن الأحداث ، فلقد أضاء ووغز الصراعات بداخلهم وغير نظرتهم للحياة والموت

I read this book because it was recommended to me by a French friend. It is very French. The story, the subtleties of the characters actions and reactions -- it's all very culturally different. If you like Le Clézio, you'll probably like this novel. Regardless of the plot, the language (even translated into English) is very smooth and beautiful.
