The fading memories Jacob has of his deceased mother are buried on a few VHS home movies. Recently haunted by recurring dreams of her, he sets out to pick up a used VCR, and finds one at a local yard sale.
However this is no ordinary VCR. According to the owner, this particular model not only plays movies, but it allows one to communicate with the dead.
Fueled by curiosity, Jacob takes it home and soon discovers that what he possesses opens a doorway to darkness, death, and lust.
**Bonus Chapter** This purchase includes the first chapter of my upcoming novella, The Saltwater Marathon.
Jonathan Chateau grew up reading books by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Michael Crichton. However, it was Fight Club--both the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk and the 1999 film by David Fincher--that inspired him to pursue writing. He has also had a love of movies since he was five and was even named after James Caan's character, Jonathan E, from the 1975 cult classic, Rollerball.
He has completed five novels, Nightmares in Analog, The Death Wish Game, Faith Against the Wolves, and Faith Against the Angels. His fifth book, The Sprawling, is slated for release next year.
When Jonathan's not writing, he's working out, painting table-top miniatures like those from Warhammer or the Walking Dead, playing way-too-many video games, eating spicy food, jamming out to Emo & EDM, or spending time with his family, friends and his spoiled cats, Boo (the Dork) & Luna (the Princess.)
He lives in Tampa, Florida and loves hearing from his readers, so stop by and say hello:
Wow, what an intriguing and unusual horror tale. It's about a VCR bringing back the dead. Things get complicated when Jacob falls in love with a dead girl. What about Doris who sold him the device? And don't forget Marcus, Tabitha's (his dead girlfriend's) pimp. Twisty, well told, descriptive, violent, nostalgic, saucy, tragic. I collected videotapes myself, lived through the VCR craze and absolutely enjoyed this fantastic little gem of a horror novella. Highly recommended!
Great story with excellent twists which actually surprised me a couple of times. This one is definitely worth a read. As long as you don't mind graphic violence and sexual situations.
Can you bring the dead back from a VHS tape? With a certain VCR purchased by Jacob, he is able to bring the deceased back for people to have their final say. This is the perfect way to make some extra income from those seeking closure...or is it? Jonathan Chateau has given us a short twilight zonesque story sure to keep your interest. How cool is this concept? And what are the drawbacks of bringing the dead back? A few twists and turns gives the story the suspense filled feeling and a surprise at the end to bring a smile to your face in contentment with the conclusion.
There does not seem to be a genre Aaron Shedlock cannot narrate. This horror/thriller type story is narrated with a voice that at times will show compassion to the person seeking their loved one, fear of who comes out and lust others. His ability to switch modes in such a short story and bring you all the different feelings is compelling.
Video is Dead by Jonathan Chateau was a good quick read. Jacob has had memories of his deceased mother in the form of VHS home movies. He buys a VCR to try and help the dreams that have haunted him. Only he is told this particular VCR he found at a yard sale allows him to communicate with the dead. This was a great read about what you discover after communicating with the dead.
