Anandamath
Anandamath is an extraordinary political novel. The plot with its epic dimensions is based on the sanyasi rebellion in the late eighteenth century. Against all odds the sanyasis fought the British whom they regarded as an arch enemy of the country and responsible for the terrible famine of 1772.
In this novel Bankim also wrote - Bande Mataram - Hail Motherland - and gave India its first national song which later became a rallying call of the national freedom movement.

Really inspired by the work of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Books like this make you think deep. Lovely translation. I am sure it must be better written in Bengali with a deeper meaning and better style. Translating Vande Mataram as a poem in to English is unreal and can never have the magical touch as Sanskrit. Vande mataram sounds better than Mother I salute to thee. The narrative of this book is based around a holy man who inspires and motivates people to forgo everything for India's independence. The story revolves around Bengal famine. This book bring the concept of Mother India. It was revolutionary and this personification of India as a mother truly would have galvanized the youth of those times. Must Read.

The book is one of the precious gems of the Indian history and Indian literature. Brilliantly written. Truly inspiring.
Though the book is set way back in the year 1770, the book offers many messages which are relevant to present scenario. There are -
1. Book infuses the spirit of nationalism and patriotism in people.
2.The book ignites the duty of people to their motherland. Whether you have renounced the worldly pleasures, you still are abided by the duty of fighting against injustice protracted in the country.
3. More than skills and in that matter anything else, togetherness matters. If you're united you can win any battle.
The book should be read by all the Indians.

Originally written in 1882, the novel takes the reader back to Bengal in the clutches of the famine and the common man bearing the burden of exploitation by the local rulers. The central theme is the Sanyasi rebellion in which women played important role side by side of their husbands. The book gives us our national song- ‘Vande Mataram’ which became the rallying call for rebels.

'Best of its time' and 'The One of all times' Best' (relevant to freedom Struggle) in Indian Literature.
This work is something which can be count as the first interaction with the real image of battle for Independence from foreign rule; Mughals, British and rest bits & pieces sultanates, which spoiled India and its condition of wealthiest nation ever, among all, in the whole world, once.
Reading such an amazing thoughts behind the Independence movement showed the foresightedness of the Author. Written in 1882, with the inclusion of the greatest poem ever written in the beauty of Mother India “VANDE MATRAM”, which was actually composed 6 years prior to that period, depicted the relevance of the time between the dates of that span and the importance of Motherland to be alive within the soul of the fellow citizens of India.
'Vande Matram' is actually the most praising beauty of Anandmath. Last I read, since school, about the Independence movement in India, was the one that started with ‘Indian Rebellion of 1857’, the “First Indian Struggle” against the ‘assaults and slave terms’ of British-India in the name of Trade. But it’s clearly shown with this work, the real image of the situation (from far back) that gone worse within the Anglo-Mughal Nepotism and this became trigger point behind the motivation of the freedom fighters who raised the swords and guns, later in 1857.
There is nothing that was left within the hands of Indians in that rule. All British did was snatching of basic rights and personal wealth of indigenous peoples of India. After Mughals, we already were in a condition not to accommodate further trouble considering the available resources and simultaneously the upbringing of children. All resources were under control of British and prior to that with Mughals. Scarcity was created to manipulate the mind-sets of Indians and made them to do what was instructed, but still the love for motherland bring forth courage and freedom-goals-till-death-wish within all.
Anandmath is just the summary of the brave actions and thoughts of Indians against what they borne in those hard times. However, to face or live that life considering the current scenario is next to impossible. The time that our forefathers seen and bore.
Epilogue, was again, the toughest part to read and shame to know the facts about ‘Indian Muslim league’ for how they created situations of havoc for rest of the Indians to reach the goal of freeing India and got Independent. How they had problem with every patriotic action based on their orthodox religious thoughts; and not the Patriotism, which was the foremost demand of that time, so that they could get Muslim centric regions for themselves. It is painful and disgusting as well.
It was Shameful & too hard to mention that the poem “Vande Matram” which carries the beauty of India as motherland, was also made political issue in the name of their religion which do not allow them to accept that. How religion became priority in front of Patriotism? Worthless to say after watching the current condition in India and their community’s demands based on that same useless brain-worm, which is still crawling inside their brains. First they had issues with the part stanza of the poem and then when accepted by rest of the members of Indian National Congress, they questioned the whole poem, every single word of that. That also in 1938, when Indians were very close to get freedom. But unfortunately the then leaders of Indian National Congress played dirty politics to accept every single demand of those anti-national elements; and this historic and heroic Poem left aside instead of becoming the National Anthem of India. And we have got Jan-Gan-Man later as our National Anthem, which was actually written by British sycophant Rabindranath Tagore in the praise of King George V and he even selected for Nobel Prize based on his this buttering. This is the Bad fortune of India.
Bankim-Da (Author) was far ahead of his time with his such thoughts that demands only the free people in free Country, India.
Amazingly written this work, depicted those painful & unbearable times for every Indian then. This book will remain forever in hearts of true patriotic peoples.
For me, needless to say, its stands for 5.0/5.0*.

Lovely read.
I felt so much enthusiastic while reading it.
It was so eloquently written along with brilliance of Hindi Language and including SANSKRIT AND BANGLA PHRASES.
I guess , Every Indian reader should need to read it once.

মশাই, মুসলমানদের প্রতি বিদ্বেষ প্রকাশ করিতে একখান প্রবন্ধ লিখিলেই পারিতেন, অনর্থক পুস্তক রচনার কি দরকার ছিলো?

যেখানে লেখক একজন মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী সাম্প্রদায়িক লেখক সেখানে তার লেখা আমার কাছে অতি তুচ্ছ, নগণ্য, আর জঘন্যও বটে। তিনি নিজেও কী তা নয়!
বিশেষ করে এই জিনিসটা আমাকে অনেক প্যারা দেয়! মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী লেখকদের বই পড়ে যেসব মুসলমানেরা ভালো মন্তব্য করে তারা আসলে কোন ধরনের মুসলমান? যেহেতু এইসব লেখকেরা মুসলিম বিদ্বেষী সে হিসেবে এক কথায় একজন মুসলমান হিসেবে তুমি তাদের মতো মানুষদের কাছে ঘৃণিত। তারা মুসলমানদের ঘৃণা করে। তারা তোমাকে ঘৃণা করে। কিন্তু সেটা তোমার চোখে পড়ে না। তোমার কাছে তাদের লেখাটাই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। তোমাদের মতো মানুষদের এখন যদি আমি কিছু বলি তখনতো ঠিকই পাল্টা আক্রমন করতে আসবা। কিন্তু তাদের বই পড়ে কী সুন্দর বলে দাও, “সাম্প্রদায়িক তো কি হয়েছে, অসাধারণ লেখনী, চমৎকার বর্ণনা ও দারুণ উপভোগ্য হওয়ার কারনে এসব দোষ বাদ দেওয়াই যায়। আমি বুঝিনা এসব বিদ্বেষী লেখা পড়ে হজম হয় কীভাবে তোমাদের।

दोस्तों यह पुस्तक मैं कितनी बार पढ़ चूका हूँ शायद मुझे इसका ज्ञान भी नहीं। जब मुझे उपन्यास शब्द से कोई सरोकार नहीं था उस समय यह पुस्तक अनोखे तरीके से मेरे हाथ लगी। मुझे यह पुस्तक मेरी माता जी के कारन प्राप्त हुआ । उन्होंने इस पुस्तक को संभल कर रखा हुआ था । जब एक दिन मेरी माता जी घर में सफाई कर रही थी, अपने पुराने दस्तावेजो में से फालतू कागज को निकल रही थी तब मैंने यह पुस्तक देखी और उठा ली । पहला पन्ना पलट कर देखा तो ये लाइन लिखी हुई थी -
वन्दे मातरम्।
सुजलां सुफलां मलय़जशीतलाम्,
शस्यश्यामलां मातरम्। वन्दे मातरम् ।।१।।
शुभ्रज्योत्स्ना पुलकितयामिनीम्,
फुल्लकुसुमित द्रुमदलशोभिनीम्,
सुहासिनीं सुमधुरभाषिणीम्,

18 वीं सदी में सन्यासी विद्रोह की पृष्ठभूमि में सेट है, यह एक बंगाली और भारतीय साहित्य के इतिहास में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपन्यासों में से एक माना जाता है. इसका महत्व इस तथ्य यह है कि यह ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य से भारतीय स्वतंत्रता के लिए संघर्ष के साथ पर्याय बन गया से बढ़ रहा है. उपन्यास अंग्रेजों द्वारा प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया था. प्रतिबंध बाद में भारत सरकार द्वारा आजादी के बाद उठाया गया था.
भारत का राष्ट्रीय गीत वंदे मातरम् पहले इस उपन्यास में प्रकाशित किया गया था.

वन्देमातरम् के रचयिता बंकिम दा कृत आनंदमठ 1770 (विदित 1171) में सधी हुई एक मुखर सन्यासी विद्रोह की कहानी है। कहते हैं कि शुरुआती पाँच अंकों तक, जो बंकिम दा के जीवन काल में ही प्रकाशित हो गए थे, इस कहानी में कई सारे बदलाव कर दिए गए थे ताकि ये एक anti-British ना हो के सिर्फ़ हिंदू-मुस्लिम अवसाद पे आधारित दिखे। इसमें किए गए बदलाव क्यूँकि कहानी के अनुकूल नहीं थे इसलिए चाहे वो क्रांति की तारीख़ हो या अंग्रेजों का शासनकाल या फिर Warren Hastings का गवर्नर होना, कहीं भी तथ्य सही उल्लेखित नहीं हैं। सही तो सिर्फ़ क्रांति की चेतना और इस रचना का महत्व।

This is a review of the early 20th century English translation, titled Abbey of Bliss, by Basanta Koomar Roy.
Set during and in the aftermath of the Bengal famine of 1770, Bankim Chand Chattopadhyay’s Anandmath begins with a brief description of the devastating famine, and the way—despite there being nothing more to even survive upon, let alone give—the English, under Warren Hastings, continued to squeeze out taxes, often by violent means. Starving and desperate, a wealthy man named Mahendra Singh, with his wife Kalyani and their little daughter, sets out for one of the cities: a city is the only place they can now hope to find food.
What they find is disaster: their daughter nearly dies, Kalyani ostensibly kills herself, and Mahendra comes in contact with Mahatma Satya, the revolutionary who heads the Children. The Children have only one ideal, one deity, one faith, one goal: the protection of Mother India. Disguised as yellow-robed sanyasis and chanting Bande Mataram, the Children gather arms, build fortifications, attack Englishmen and loot tax collectors of their revenues.
This is the story of Mahendra’s joining the Children of Anandmath. It becomes, too, the story of the others of Anandmath: Mahatma Satya’s main deputies, Bhavan and Jiban; of Kalyani herself, who is rescued and revived by Bhavan; of Jiban, who comes across Mahendra and Kalyani’s little daughter and rescues her, leaving her with his sister to be cared for. Of Shanti, the tomboy wife whom Jiban—who like all the other Children, has renounced the rest of the world—has left behind. Shanti, who decides to be with her husband, and so disguises herself as a young sanyasi too and joins the Children as Nabin.
Shanti, to me, was the most interesting of the characters of this book. Besides being spunky, she is nuanced: feminine, but not conforming to the expected norms of femininity in that period. The others, male and female, are rather more one-dimensional. The story itself is short, uncomplicated, and somewhat repetitive (the constant refrain of Bande Mataram began to get on my nerves after a while).
As an appeal to a militant, Hindu-centric, Mother-worshipping patriotism, I can see why this book might be a hit with some. To me, it was nothing to write home about. The characterisations, barring Shanti, are uninteresting; the miraculous healings (and there's more than one) are unreal; and the fervent vows to attain atonement only by death and no other means are tedious. Besides, some things are hard to swallow. A village, for instance, described as being verdant, full of fruit trees, with ducks and geese swimming on ponds—but the villagers starving and emaciated because of drought?
I haven't read the original, so have nothing to go on regarding the worth of Basanta Koomar Roy’s translation (which has its own flaws, including grammatical errors). If Roy’s translation is, in fact, true to the original, I fail to see what the fuss is all about.

"Anandmath" by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee is one of those books which can never fail to precipitate the feeling of nationalism in the mind of an Indian reader. The plot of the story, touches various segments of the pre-Independence India, whether it is the plight of the people during the Bengal Famine, where hunger turn humans to cannibals or the women's equal participation in the revolutionary activities along their husbands. The unjust tax policies had forced the people of Northern Bengal to agitate and then their agitation is elaborately symbolized in this book. The coming together of people and formation of a congress-ion to fight for their rights was given an interesting turn with the ascetic look and some radical behavior of the revolutionaries.
This book is a national treasure of India owing to its simplicity of story telling, the way it expresses the tale of Indian freedom struggle. The passion in the people depicted in the book is quite relatable to one exhibited during the freedom struggle. The book also highlights the sorry and devastated condition of the people during the Bengal Famine where the people had nothing to satisfy their hunger and all the riches possessed by people were merely a display of no actual use. The book states plight of people in the regions of famine hit poor India
The people were depressed to an extent that giving up their life seemed a better option than living a life full of despair. Just the mere love for family gave them the hope or reason to stay alive. The author also focused on the importance of celibacy to achieve the desired goals. To renounce the family bonding and focus on the goal is a necessity and the atonement for breaking this vow is only death penalty.
It was indeed a book that gave me immense understanding about life of people in India in those days. Bande Matram!

Sanaatan dharma is dynamic and adapts to time and situation. The author describes the sanaatan dharma for that time period through the words and activities of Santaan-s. Excluding the last 5 pages which perhaps were written to bypass the British censure at the time, the book describes the condition of our beloved motherland and our duties for its upliftment. (The Muslims could very well be substituted by the British and a message for independence struggle could be given very easily, and this happened in form of Vande Matram becoming the battle cry for Bharat's Independence struggle.) At the time of its publication and even today it ignites the devotion and duty towards the motherland.

বইটা যখন পড়ি তখন হাতে যাই পেতাম পড়ে ফেলাতাম। নতুবা এ সময়ে এসে এরকম দাঁতভাঙ্গা লেখা পড়ার সময় পেতাম নাহ।
বইটা ব্রিটিশবিরোধী আন্দোলন নিয়ে। সে সময় পরাধীন ভারতবাসীকে এই বই অনেক উজ্জীবিত করে ব্যাপক নাম কামিয়েছে। বিশেষ করে বন্দেমাতারম গানটি মানুষের মুখে মুখে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। যদিও সাম্প্রদায়িকতা স্পর্শ বইটিকে অনেকটা কলুষিত করেছে। আন্দোলনের ধরনকে লেখক হিন্দুত্ববাদী ছোঁয়া দিয়ে বিরাট মুসলমান সমাজকে আলাদা করে রেখেছিল। উপরন্তু মুসলমানদেরকে বহিরাগত তকমা দিয়ে তাদের বিরুদ্ধেও উস্কানি দেওয়া হয়েছে। অবশ্য তৎকালীন হিন্দু মেজরিটি বই পড়ার অভ্যাসের দরুন এই বইটি বেশ জনপ্রিয়তা পেয়েছিল।

। আনন্দমঠঃ বঙ্কিমের রাষ্ট্রপ্রকল্প ও অন্যান্য ।
বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের লেখকজীবনের চৌদ্দ উপন্যাসের মধ্যে বারোতম 'আনন্দমঠ' পড়া হলো। পাঠ-পরবর্তী অনুভূতি বেশ মিশ্র এবং কয়েকভাবে দ্বিধাসংকুল।
আনন্দমঠ বঙ্কিমের কাহিনীপ্রধান উপন্যাসগুলার মধ্যে নাই, এখানে কাহিনী খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু হিসেবে আনেননি লেখক। যা এসেছে, মোটা দাগে দুটিকে প্রধান করা যায়- দর্শন-রাষ্ট্রভাবনা, এবং বর্ণনা ভাষা প্রসঙ্গ।
বঙ্কিমের প্রথমদিকের উপন্যাস ধরে বুঝতে গেলে দুর্গেশনন্দিনী কিংবা কপালকুণ্ডলা-র কথা বলা ভালো। উক্ত পর্বের উপন্যাসসমূহের প্রধান প্রবণতা নর-নারীকেন্দ্রিক, তাদের ভালোবাসা, সেইসময় উদ্ভুত কিছু সংকট এবং অপরাপর তাদের জীবনকে কেন্দ্র করে, সেই জায়গা থেকে আনন্দমঠ খুব শক্তিশালী না, এখানে কিছু বীররস উপস্থাপিত বটে, বেশ কিছু অংশে এডভেঞ্চারাস যুদ্ধের বর্ণনাও আছে, তবুও গল্পবিন্যাস খুব সীমিত। কিন্তু দর্শনগত অবস্থান, প্রকৃতিব্যাখ্যা এবং ভাষার গাঁথুনিতে উপন্যাসটিকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে হয়।
লক্ষণীয় যে, ব্রিটিশসাম্রাজ্যের সময়ে, সেই উপনিবেশবাদী গঠনতন্ত্র যে মধ্যবিত্ত হিন্দু বাঙালি শ্রেনী নির্মাণ করেছিল, বঙ্কিম সেখান থেকে উদ্ভুত প্রথম মনস্বী-লেখক রাষ্ট্রবেত্তা, তিনিই প্রথম একটি রাষ্ট্রপ্রকল্প তার গদ্যে প্রবেশ করাতে সমর্থ ছিলেন। কী তার সেই রাষ্ট্রচিন্তা? একবাক্যে বলতে গেলে মুসলিম-বিরোধী (বিদ্বেষী?) হিন্দু জাতীয়তাবাদ। ব্রিটিশরাজের সাথে তার কোন বিরোধের জায়গা নেই। এই একপেশে সাম্প্রদায়িক ভঙ্গিটি বঙ্কিম-কে একজন লেখকের বাইরে একজন হিন্দু হিসেবে হাইলাইটেড করে ফেলে অনেক বেশি। তার ভঙ্গিটি যুদ্ধংদেহী, তিনি বর্ণনা করে যাচ্ছেন একেরপর এক মুসলিমগ্রাম জ্বালিয়ে দেয়ার কথা, মুসলমান একেবারে সাধারণ জনগণের সম্পদ লুঠে নিয়ে তাকে মাতৃ( পড়ুন, দেশ) স্বার্থে ব্যবহারের কথা। জাতীয়তাবাদে, বঙ্কিম ভার্শনে, তাই দেশের চেয়ে, জণগণের চেয়ে অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে ধর্ম এগিয়ে থাকে। দেশকে একটি পৌত্তলিক অবস্থান থেকে বিবেচনা করা হয় এবং সনাতন ধর্মের ধ্বজা উঁচু অবস্থানে তুলে ধরছেন বঙ্কিম। এখানে মৌলবাদী বঙ্কিম-কে আজকের বিজেপি, শিবসেনার থেকে পৃথক করে এবং বিশ্বের ইসলামী মৌলবাদীদের চেয়ে পৃথক মহৎ কোন অবতারে আমরা দেখতে পাইনা। যেমনটি বলেছিলেন আহমদ শরীফ- বঙ্কিমের উপন্যাসের পথে শুরু থেকে শেষাবধি মানুষ-বঙ্কিম দশা থেকে হিন্দু-বঙ্কিম দশার দিকে ক্রমাগ্রসরায়মান।
উপন্যাসের পটভূমি '৭৬ এর মন্বন্তর থেকে শুরু হয়েছে, সন্ন্যাসী বিদ্রোহের সন্ন্যাসীদের দুর্গ আনন্দমঠ, এর আশপাশের ভাওয়ালঅঞ্চল, তার বনবনানী, প্রকৃতি এবং বিভিন্ন পর্যায়ে ইংরেজদের সাথে যুদ্ধের ঘটনা ঘুরে ফিরে এসেছে।
আনন্দমঠ উপন্যাস ভাষা নান্দনিকতায় অনন্য। সাধু-ভাষার তৎসম শব্দবহুল যে মেদুর গাম্ভীর্য, যে সম্ভ্রান্ত সৌন্দর্য এর পদে পদে, তা বঙ্কিম অমিতকুশলতায় প্রকাশিয়াছেন বারেবারে। পড়তে পড়তে বিভিন্ন জায়গায় মনে হয়েছে নিপুণ কারিগরির কোন কবিতাপাঠের মধ্যে দিয়ে যাচ্ছি, বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র স্থানেস্থানে আস্তিনের মধ্যে থেকে ম্যাজিক দেখাচ্ছেন। উপক্রমণিকা তে জঙ্গলে রাত্রির বর্ণনাভঙ্গি-
'অতি বিস্তৃত অরণ্য। অরণ্যমধ্যে অধিকাংশ বৃক্ষই শাল, কিন্তু তদ্ভিন্ন আরও অনেকজাতীয় গাছ আছে। গাছের মাথায় মাথায় পাতায় পাতায় মিশামিশি হইয়া অনন্ত শ্রেণী চলিয়াছে। বিচ্ছেদশূন্য, ছিদ্রশূন্য, আলোকপ্রবেশের পথমাত্রশূন্য; এইরূপ পল্লবের অনন্ত সমুদ্র, ক্রোশের পর ক্রোশ, ক্রোশ��র পর ক্রোশ, পবনে তরঙ্গের উপরে তরঙ্গ বিক্ষিপ্ত করিয়া চলিয়াছে। নীচে ঘনান্ধকার। মধ্যাহ্নেও আলোক অস্ফূট, ভয়ানক! তাহার ভিতরে কখন মনুষ্য যায় না। পাতার অনন্ত মর্ম্মর এবং বন্য পশুপক্ষীর রব ভিন্ন অন্য শব্দ তাহার ভিতর শুনা যায় না।'
-এই প্রকাশ আমার কাছে ধ্রুপদী সঙ্গীতের অমায়িক প্রকাশ বলে বোধ হয়েছে বারবার। এরকম বর্ণনা না দাগায়ে আমার পক্ষে পড়া সম্ভব হয়না, এখন বই শেষ করে দেখা যাচ্ছে সমগ্র বইয়ের প্রায় অর্ধকে নীল-কালিতে আন্ডারলাইনড।
আনন্দমঠের এই দাগানো অংশগুলোই হয়তো বারবার পড়া হবে, বহুবার। বঙ্কিমের রাষ্ট্রপ্রকল্পে আগ্রহ নাই, কারণ লেখক বঙ্কিম আমাদের কাছে নমস্য, যার হাতে ভাষায় প্রাণধরে বর্ণনা ম্যাজিক হয়ে ওঠে, হিন্দু-সাম্প্রদায়িকতাক্রান্ত ব্রিটিশরাজের অনুরাগী বঙ্কিম নন।
বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়ের লেখকজীবনের চৌদ্দ উপন্যাসের মধ্যে বারোতম 'আনন্দমঠ' পড়া হলো। পাঠ-পরবর্তী অনুভূতি বেশ মিশ্র এবং কয়েকভাবে দ্বিধাসংকুল।
আনন্দমঠ বঙ্কিমের কাহিনীপ্রধান উপন্যাসগুলার মধ্যে নাই, এখানে কাহিনী খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু হিসেবে আনেননি লেখক। যা এসেছে, মোটা দাগে দুটিকে প্রধান করা যায়- দর্শন-রাষ্ট্রভাবনা, এবং বর্ণনা ভাষা প্রসঙ্গ।
বঙ্কিমের প্রথমদিকের উপন্যাস ধরে বুঝতে গেলে দুর্গেশনন্দিনী কিংবা কপালকুণ্ডলা-র কথা বলা ভালো। উক্ত পর্বের উপন্যাসসমূহের প্রধান প্রবণতা নর-নারীকেন্দ্রিক, তাদের ভালোবাসা, সেইসময় উদ্ভুত কিছু সংকট এবং অপরাপর তাদের জীবনকে কেন্দ্র করে, সেই জায়গা থেকে আনন্দমঠ খুব শক্তিশালী না, এখানে কিছু বীররস উপস্থাপিত বটে, বেশ কিছু অংশে এডভেঞ্চারাস যুদ্ধের বর্ণনাও আছে, তবুও গল্পবিন্যাস খুব সীমিত। কিন্তু দর্শনগত অবস্থান, প্রকৃতিব্যাখ্যা এবং ভাষার গাঁথুনিতে উপন্যাসটিকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে হয়।

A great read ... this was the first novel , book, fiction , non fiction or whatever you call it ... picked up from the railways book stall of my hometown...
I read this book way back in 2001....
Vande Mataram and Hare Murare Madhu Kaitabh Mare..... were the words that still echo in my ears...the read is as fresh as it was in 2001...
The band of revolutionary sanyasis and there tryst with their destinies was portrayed in somewhat the greatest Manner possible....
I was amazed that there is a world of books beyond the coursework....which never interested me.....
I used to laugh and relax in the imaginary world of Bankim Da ...In fact I felt like I'm a also a part of this revolution....
Such a great read...it was..... it turned me from reading averse to book lover

भला मैं इस अद्भुत साहित्यकृति की क्या समीक्षा करूं? मेरी उतनी योग्यता नहीं।
भारतवर्ष के लोकसाहित्य इतिहास में इस महान कथा का स्वर्णिम स्थान है। जिसने वंदे मातरम मंत्र हमें दिया उस ग्रंथको और उसके ग्रंथकार को शत शत नमन।
बस एक बात आखिर में हृदय को चुभ गयी। जिस संन्यासी विद्रोह का अतीवसुंदर, वीररस तथा भक्तिरस पूर्ण वर्णन इस कथा में किया है उसकी समाप्ति म्लेच्छ राज नष्ट करके स्वतंत्रता की जगह कंपनी राज लाने में हुई। इति: प्रभुकी इच्छा!

अठारवीं सदी के भारत की अच्छी झलक मिलती है इस उपन्यास को पढ़ के। वैष्णवी सन्यासियों ने कैसे अंग्रेजों और मुसलमानों से लड़ने के लिए हथियार उठा लिया, इसी पृष्टभूमि पर पूरी कहानी है। और आनन्दमठ का सबसे बड़ा योगदान वंदे मातरम गीत है।जो आज भी उतना ही प्रासंगिक है जितना 100 साल पहले था। a must read!!

Anandmath was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and was released in 1882, during the British rule in India. Vande Mataram, national song of India was introduced in this book and it is main reason I picked this book.
It is loosely based on Sanyasis rebellion against Britishers in 18th century.
It was hard to think that how much our ancestors has suffered to get the freedom. The book's characters are fictional and you can relate them with real life incidents.
The book was banned by Britishers as they fear the book will inspire Indians to fight for their rights.

আনন্দমঠ পড়ে মনে হয়েছে যে লেখকের মনের মধ্যে সনাতন শক্তির পুনরউত্থানের যে ব্যাপার ছিল সেটা তিনি প্রয়োগ করতে পারেননি শুধু মাত্র ইংরেজ শাসনের কারনে। তাই শেষে ইংরেজ দের পরাজিত করে এক সময় ভারতবর্ষ এক সময় স্বাধীন হবে সেই আশা করা হয়েছে। মুসলমান দের মারার যে ব্যাপারটা অবশ্যই রূপক অর্থে। পিউর ব্লাড এর ব্যাপার আসলে তো আরব, ওলন্দাজ, ইংরেজ সব ই বিদেশী। এখন শুধু ইংরেজ তাড়ালেই তো দেশ স্বাধীন হোলো না। সেই ব্যাপারখানা আনন্দমঠে ছিল।
