In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers has been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.

En's murder sends his gang into chaos as Shin and Noi attempt to hunt down his killer's whereabouts. Meanwhile, Nikaido and Asu team up to locate the elusive Caiman. And the Cross-Eyes continue their quest to see their boss; unaware of his role in En's death, or that their path is taking them straight into danger themselves. A battle royale of the bloodiest kind awaits…

--

EN After the chaos of the previous volumes, this one feels more like a moment of reckoning—a chance to take stock of the aftermath. The Cross-Eyes have taken control of En's mansion, marking a clear shift in the balance of power.

Dorohedoro can be a real mind-bender at times, and honestly, by the end of this volume, I had to look up a few events just to fully grasp what I’d read.

It all wraps up with a truly unexpected moment.

( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)

All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts!
I have the memory of a goldfish.

[RE-READ] SEPTEMBER 2021
TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror & nudity
Rating: 5 stars

Summarising with bullet points from now onwards so I can get through my re-reads faster

Spell 74: Cross-Eyes in the news
- Most of En's family has been wiped out
- The cross-eyes boss's inner circle have taken over En's mansion
- The high-ups remain in hiding
- It's funny that the cross-eyes are more excited about the stock of groceries and cleaning supplies rather than a room full of gold (they're a different breed, alright)
- They found the doors to Hole used by sorcerers that can't produce smoke (Say what you like about En but the fact that he had this installed in the mansion proves that he cares about his staff/entourage)
- With En dead and the cross-eyes in power, more people are trying to join them
- We see Aikawa (so handsome) listening to coverage about the cross-eyes on the TV at the ramen shop.
- When he left, he witnesses a fight and helped the person
- Apparently, he used to attend school with the person before
- He shares that En shut down the South Zagan School of Magic a few years back because the cross-eyes had used the place to sell black powder
- There's a new school around the corner. Aikawa is interested in enrolling
- The kid mentions that thanks to En, the cross-eyes were kept in check but now that he's dead, the high-ranked sorcerers won't bully the low-ranks anymore
- With nothing to do, Aikawa search for Risu at his apartment

Spell 75: Idea-drome
-The cross-eyes plan to recruit more people into their group and put them to work. Natsuki shares her concern. Ton found a magic sensor that can detect the power of sorcerer's magic. This can be used to scan and separate the high rank and low rank sorcerers before recruitment (They're only recruiting the latter, obviously). Ton tests the sensor on Natsuki.
- We see more of the mysterious sludge thing
- While cleaning it up, Tetsujo asked Dokuga where the Boss went before this
- Dokuga shares with him that he was trying to find a sorcerer with a certain ability
- It was revealed that the boss had been trying to locate 'Curse-magic', possessed by Risu
- Whoever killed Risu got cursed (Caiman?)
- Apparently the job Risu accepted (to deliver black powder) before he got murdered was Dokuga's doing as per the Boss's instructions
- Risu's death might have been caused by The Boss all along. As consequence, he got cursed
- We see Risu's nightmare. He keeps asking why he was killed. There's Caiman, Aikawa, Kai and decapitated bodies in the mix. We also see a vial of Ebisu's magic smoke, Caiman's head left at Berith's Hotsprings, Caiman's head stolen from the hospital in hole & more
-Risu bought En's magic sensor (probably when he was still enrolled at the school) and I guess he found out about his curse-power, thanks to En's invention. He decided to share the news with one person only and it was revealed to be Aikawa
- Aikawa and Risu finally reunited
- Risu seemed to have calmed from the rage of his 'curse'. He looks normal. Aikawa offers to bring him food. He is still suspicious of Aikawa, however.
- At the hotel, Noi finally wakes up after the incident from a month ago (her healing powers seemed to have slowed down)
- Sho was finally introduced (during Blue Night, you can actually see him at En's mansion. He's one of the registered members of En's family )
- Sho has the ability to make anything invisible
- He used to serve En as an assassin. Due to the nature of his magic, he kept his existence lowkey (I would to!)
- We see Shin in the bathroom (still covered in mushrooms). Sho attempted to cure him using several healing smokes but to no avail
- Noi didn't waste time in saving her beloved senpai. Her healing power works
- She was pushed by a confused Shin but the two ended up hugging each other :')
- Sho seems to be immediately forgotten once Shin is healed ( I can relate, Sho)

Spell 76 : Lucky Jerk
- Deep in the forest, we see Chota keeping Judas's Ear safe from strangers
- The cross eyes gang is seen to be growing and they plan to search for Judas's Ear
- Natsuki asks Ton about her magic scan results from the other day. Apparently, she scored quite high? However, she still can't seem to produce any smoke (even after consuming black powder). The two seeks out to find Judas's Ear
- We see Fujita and Ebisu trying to find the dog too, with a Judas's Ear doll (made by Turkey)
- What's left of En's family had retreated to an abandoned building
- They managed to survive thanks to Sho
- Sho revealed that he managed to save Shin and Noi and En's head
- It's impossible to revive En without his devil tumour
- They were all given tasks to revive En (they need to 1) recover the tumour, bring En's head for recovery and use Judas's Ear for resurrection)
- Fujita and Ebisu is responsible to locate Judas's Ear
- We see Chota in poor shape unable to care for the dog
- Ton and Natsuki attempts to kidnap Judas's Ear
- They found the clone and Ton prepares to kill Chota
- Fujita and Ebisu hides in the bushes. Upon seeing a scared Judas's Ear, Ebisu transformed into a lizard to save him
- Ebisu's too strong for the cross-eyes. She managed to get Judas's Ear from them
- Meanwhile, we see Fujita helping Chota
- Chota mentions that the charm embedded in her skull must've triggered her when she sees the dog (whom she loves) in danger
- Natsuki got badly injured and this opened her smoke veins. She was revealed to have cocooning magic
- Sho arrived on a magic carpet and left with the gang
- We see Ton waking up next to a cocooned Natsuki. Her magic would make her a good bodyguard.

Spell 77 : Advanced Magic
- We see a headless body (Ai?) leading The Boss (Kai? Aikawa?) to Prof Kasukabe's clinic. We don't know what the body told Kai? Aikawa? but he seemed annoyed by him (it?). Then we see Ai recovering on one of the hospital beds ( same scene when Prof said his personality changed drastically and scared him in volume 7? ) He stares at the Boss (Kai? Aikawa?) with a sinister look on his face (yikes). The Boss found Ai's hat (he never took it off before he got the surgery) on the floor. So Ai, Aikawa, Kai and Caiman are all the same person?
- Aikawa wakes up from the nightmare. He spent the night at Risu's.
- Aikawa seems to not remember anything (even Prof Kasukabe. So they're the same people with different memories?) He starts getting headaches as he tries to remember
- We see Risu tailing him as Aikawa heads out
- In hell, we see Haze (Prof Kasukabe) and Haru relaxing ( so she didn't bring them back home, huh? hahaha). She asks him to live in Hell with her and turned Haze into a much older body. He is uncomfortable by this! (AHAHAHA he got used to the body of a boy).
- Haze asks for Haru's help to find Ai
- Back at an unknown location, we see Nikaido training to become devil. Kawajiri is impressed. He calls her for dinner
- I just realised that the meat they're eating is from "Store" (when Asu was brutally turned into sorcerer and his scraps was sold at the meat store for devil candidates)
- Nikaido mentions that she doesn't want to become devil but Asu is just training her a smoke-deployment training that is similar to the devil's training
- Nikaido finally uses her magic again after a long time. Kawajiri reassures her. We see the "cube" from when she was younger transformed
- She got tired and it disappears
- Kawajiri thought of a book that could help her use the magic to its potential
- The only sorcerer who possess such a book is En
- Kawajiri finds magic smoke that will help them to disguise before heading off to En's mansion

Spell 78 : Ballad of Happy Destruction
- We see the original cross-eyes gang feeding the new recruits (bless them, the low-rank sorcerers have been living in poverty this entire time & are outcasted by their own kind)
- We see Tetsujo trying to free Natsuki from the cocoon but it won't budge
- Natsuki's magic disappears and she seems to be happy and completely healed
- Although everyone seems to be accepting of Natsuki (she's not a low-rank, after all), Dokuga and Tetsujo looks over her suspiciously
- Back at the school, we see Aikawa being a bad student ( stealing food, eating in class, making trouble)
- Now relaxing on a balcony, Risu looks at him suspiciously from afar
- Risu's plan to be distreet was unsuccessful
- He revealed to Aikawa that he had been tailing him and shares his suspicions
- Risu accuse Aikawa of selling him out to the cross-eyes about his curse magic
- Aikawa mentions that he never revealed Risu's magic to anyone but he doesn't believe him
- As Risu got more angry, he went to find the cross-eyes to seek revenge
- Nikaido and Kawajiri successfully disguised themselves by swapping genders, thanks to magic smoke. They head to En's mansion using Kawajiri's transportation magic (Nikaido looks hot)
- The disguise will only last for 4 hours
- They search for a special room where En keeps gifts from devils
- Nikaido remembers the room hidden behind a statue
- While Dokuga and Tetsujo is at En's old room, the other four cross-eyes members checks out Noi's old room
- Risu arrived at the mansion and shares that Dokuga has been keeping all kinds of secrets about him from the gang
- Risu turns into 'Curse' once more and finds Dokuga
- Meanwhile, we see Aikawa entering the mansion via a food delivery dock
- This version of Aikawa seems to remember working at Tanba (ISN'T IT CAIMAN though?)
- Aikawa finds Tetsujo and Dokuga in a vacant room. He decides to eavesdrop
- Apparently, Tetsujo was not suspicious of Natsuki but he was scared for her
- As she has magic, the Boss would probably kill her off and steal it too
- Dokuga plans to send her far away to keep her safe. When she's out of reach, he will try to talk to the boss about not killing off their friends
- They decided to give the boss another chance because he was the one who gave the cross-eyes a reason to live
- Aikawa seems to be deep in thought
- Nikaido and Kawajiri enters the room but got stopped by Tetsujo
- Kawajiri disappears to find the book while Nikaido fights him as part of her training
- While Dokuga and Tetsujo got badly injured, Nikaido bailed and butt heads with Aikawa
- Of course, he doesn't recognise her in that disguise

Spell 79 : Question & Answer
- We finally see Dr Vaux again with thirteen at the hospital
- He shares with him Caiman's x-rays and charts. They seem normal and its obvious that he's human. However, there's something weird about them. He plans to ask Prof Kasukabe later
- Dokuga and Tetsujo runs around the mansion to look for Nikaido
- Nikaido and Aikawa is seen hiding behind a statue
- Nikaido recognises the statue and they arrived at En's secret room
- Aikawa asks Nikaido how he knew him and she finally revealed that she's actually Nikaido. He didn't trust her, however
- Nikaido tries finding the book while he eats
-4 hours have passed so the magic wears off
- Nikaido turns normal and its so cute when she wears his hoodie
- Aikawa seems angry that she often brings up "Caiman" and claim he doesn't know him ( BUT YOU REMEMBERED WORKING WITH TANBA? HOWS THAT?)
- The topic about Hole and gyoza came up and Aikawa seems to remember it. He lied about not knowing anything about gyoza though
- They came across the cross-eyes trying to stop Risu/Curse
- Natsuki cocooned herself and tries to fight off Curse
- Apparently Curse feeds off hate/ killing energy?
- Natsuki was able to fight him off (Go, Natsuki! She's not a useless cross-eyes member, after all) and they proceed to drop Risu off the building
- Aikawa seems to be getting headaches but he ran to save Risu
- Kawajiri met up with Nikaido. They followed Aikawa
- Aikawa pulled him back inside and asked Kawajiri and Nikaido to take Risu with them
- We see Aikawa going berserk as soon as Nikaido mentions about the past (so every memory is triggering?)
- He runs away from them with a throbbing headache
- The headless body is there again but this time, we are able to understand what it's saying. Aikawa looks both annoyed and scared at the sight of him
Why do you refuse? (to cooperate? is Aikawa/Kai supressing some sort of magic which is why different heads keep generating or?) From the beginning, you never existed! (so who is this Aikawa/Kai/ Caiman then?) Is the headless body Ai? Look to be him (is he the main host?)
-Aikawa's head blew off and there's that mysterious sludge again coming out of him
- The old head defuses and we see a new one growing
- Dokuga and Tetsujo learn about Natsuki's help in defeating the 'Curse'. To save her from their Boss, they decided to send her on a mission alone
- Dokuga sent her off to track an elite sorcerer
- Unfortunately, she ran into the Boss (she's so innocent and this part seems a bit perverted)
- He killed Natsuki and hid her body inside of the statue

Natsuki's death will always be sad to me. She has one of the most painful endings in Dorohedoro. Her farewell is bittersweet, really. I think it's coming in the next few volumes.

Bonus chapter:
We see En going to a resort to wind down. Since they're on "holiday", with En out of town, Noi invited her devil friend, Duston and introduced him to Fujita and Ebisu. Ebisu dottes on the devil. LOL! They decided to play a game and Noi went to Shin's room to invite him. We see him floating mid-air, being dragged somewhere.
Apparently a devil named Alice has a crush on him and intends on making him as one of her 'accesories'. Hahaha. Duston seeks for Haru's help to kill Alice. Alice was killed using the "butcher knife" which Haru had borrowed from Chidaruma.

A dense volume that was horny, violent, mysterious, funny, and poignant. Like Nikaido, I can’t help but feeling that « I want things to be like they were… » but alas, the story we knew has evolved into a different beast.
Hayashida expertly handles the transition, managing to touch base with the many characters while spending more time on new conflicts and questions.
The illustrations are hauntingly gorgeous. Aikawa’s nightmare scenes, Curse’s appearance, and Dokuga’s inner turmoil are stunningly penned. At this point the story is a bit confusing to follow, but it feels like the uncertainty is intentional rather than badly communicated to the reader, which makes for a more thoughtful read than being able to guess what’s about to happen next.

Even though i read half of it and left it because i wasn't feeling the manga vibe, my aul manga binge has come back in all its glory. Fantastic art and really cant say that enough, Hayashida is amazing! Story is also great at the minute, needing a bit more brain power for this volume (and im sure the next ones) compared to the first 10

This does feel like more of a transitional volume but it’s still fun bc of how well the world has been set up now! I’m so fascinated by the mysteries I just wanna know more.

I love how the author uses her own universe laws to develop new things and explain mysteries. Some characters are really insane I can't stop laughing at some pages.

I was initially disappointed in this volume of Dorohedoro. It starts off with Noi and then Shin coming back from the dead, or nearly dead, again- which was a bit tiresome last time it happened. This time, however, they need assistance from an apparently old member of En's family who just appears out of nowhere. Then there is some faffing around with the Cross-Eyes. I was must about ready to pack it in.

Then, however, Hayashida begins to explore more closely the relationships between Aikawa, Caiman, Risu, and the boss of the Cross-Eyes. We also see Kawajiri and Nikkaido explore Nikkaido's magic a bit more. These two plot lines reminded me of my initial fascination with Dorohedoro. Haru also makes an appearance with Haze/Kasukabe, which is both fun and reminds readers of Ai- who is floating around in the background and who I am sure will start to reemerge once more in connection with one of the other story arcs. The latter spells were a great save after a weak start.

Aikawa and Risu are NOT in love. Risu is furious with Aikawa; I think it's obvious from the glares he gives Aikawa behind his back. At best, Aikawa is at least somewhat responsible for Risu's (first) death, and at worst, he was the one who KILLED him! Unless Risu has a murder fetish, I don't think he's hiding any feelings.

Not only do I think Aikawa does not love Risu, I think Aikawa's incapable of loving anyone at all. I don't think I can express how much I despise Caiman 2.0. He doesn't care about Nikaido. He doesn't care about Risu. And he couldn't give two sh*ts about Natsuki. He has no concept of family, friendship, love, or empathy. Aikawa reminds me of Pol Pot and Nikaido needs to teach him a f*cking lesson.

Shin and Noi... now THAT is a relationship I can see. They're totally in love with each other, they just don't know it yet.

En and Chota... MAYBE?!?!

NOOOO NATSUKIIIIIII!!! also Risu and Aikawas relationship <3333 also A GENDER BENDER ARC!!!! dokuga has to turn on kai at this point right? like how can they keep following him after this??? ugh i honestly would have given this 5 but i need to show restraint, these last 3 volumes have been AMAZING, high point of the series right now! also the scene where the cross eyes see how many groceries were in the manor and how they flip out and the first thing they say is "we will be able to feed the people just off this!" bro how can u not root for them?!?! but they gotta turn on the boss,,, but at the same time we love noi and en and ebisu and everyone ughhhh there are few pieces of media where there are so many genuinely likeable characters on all opposing sides that every battle is so hard to watch bc u dont want either party to get hurt

Finally getting back to this series after far too long. After En's death, the cross-eyes have taken over his mansion, and his family has scattered to the four winds. As such, the bulk of this volume is split between the survivors of En's family trying to regroup, and the cross-eyes trying to figure out how to handle their newfound wealth--and the sudden influx of people wanting to join the gang. And somehow in the midst of all that, there's space for story arcs about Nikaido trying to learn how to control her magic from Asu (or, I guess he's Kawajiri, now), and Aikawa reconnecting with Risu. As has become par for the course for Dorohedoro, there's a lot going on here, but it never really feels rushed...even when things get weird(er) at the end.

Lot of interesting development this volume - shout out to the bonus joke chapter at the end - every volume has one but the big star this time is Alice (who is on the cover of the volume and for context she is both the sexy lady and the red demon holding the sexy lady - they're both her body) - Alice owns.
