Durham Red: Bitch

Rate this book
Durham Red teams up with Jonny Alpha to bring in kidnappers who've gone into the past to capture the US president, Ronald Reagan.

SCI-FI TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO!

Following the Atomic War of 2150, Britain has been devastated by nuclear holocaust. The survivors rebuilt their lives, but many were warped by the mutating effects of Strontium 90 fallout. These mutants were forced to grow up in ghettos and take the only job open to them – bounty hunting.

Durham Red is one of these unfortunate beings. Ostracized by many of her kind due to her vampiric mutation, she has used her unique talents to become one of the toughest ‘Strontium Dogs’ in the universe. In this explosive introduction to the character, Durham Red teams up with fellow bounty hunter Johnny Alpha, to rescue President Ronald Reagan from a group of militant, alien terrorists!

Written by John Wagner ( A History of Violence ) and Alan Grant ( Batman ) with art by Carlos Ezquerra ( Judge Dredd ), Durham Red proves that the female of the species is definitely more deadly than the male!

The inaugural Durham Red adventure is marred by a plethora of inane Reagan jokes (He’s senile and loves nukes. Ha. Ha.) and puerile political allegory (colonialism bad).

Other than that, it’s a standard action story. Johnny and Red team up to rescue the president, captured by terrorists. They have to locate Reagan, defeat the terrorists, and battle rival bounty hunters. There’s a perfunctory feel to the plot; the complications are tidy and the heroes are never really tested.

The writing style is smooth for the most part, keeping captions to a minimum. A welcome relief compared to the turgid Marvel and DC books of the era.

Ezquerra’s art is crude, but the design of Red is strong. She is by far the best part of the book and the only reason to read it. We don’t learn anything about her background, but her aggressive, wild, playful personality is highly memorable.

The designs of the planet Kaiak and the Kaiaks could have been better. Not very alien.
