Certainly not the voluptuous collection of Dredd's finest moments I was hard up for. I was excited, as I am a HUGE fan of both Judge Dredd and sex, that this book would deliver some solid stories. Sadly, it came up somewhat flaccid.
The book is a collection of 24 previously published stories involving crimes where sex, love, or nudity are the principal motive or are somehow significant to the tale. Several outstanding Dredd alumni provide stories (John Wagner and Alan Grant) and a couple of the stories are ok. “Sleaze” and “Stone Killer” were wicked little tales I enjoyed. Overall it was something of a disappointment as a lot of the writing was just average. A couple stories had Dredd’s old-fashioned satirical slant that was amusing at times.
Simon Bisley (“The Great Arsoli”), Carlos Ezquerra (“The Girlfriend”), and Greg Staples (“Attack of the Sex Crazed Love Dolls”) all provided some nice artwork to the tome. But, it was hardly stacked in the art department either. Most the art was just too cartoony or just didn’t hit the spot for me. Only hard-core Dredd lovers should seek out this naughty little collection. For anyone else it will probably come up a little short.
SEX in the City! Mega-City One of course. This collection is a little erratic. The stories span the years and feature a lot of classic stories from classic 2000AD writers. However this trade isnt very sexy. The stories either have ironic twists or sad endings. I did love the story about the professional sex Olympics arc. If you love Dredd you will get a few chuckles out of these tales but not much.
With this graphic novel 2000 A.D. puts you in the thick of Mega-City One's seedy world. Tales of crimes of passion, debauchery and revenge run rampant through the pages. Dark comedy peppered throughout some of the stories and Dredds unflinching loyalty to the law make for wicked fun. Not for the faint of heart. I contains nudity, sexual situations, violence and a tad bit of gore. It does remind me of the old Heavy Metal comic magazines I read here in the States back in the late 80's and early 90's. Fun read 5 stars.
You may get a few laughs out of this because some of it is so far fetched and over the top, but you really need to be a Judge Dredd fan to enjoy any of it, and even then maybe not so much. Lots of the stories are just sad, erratic, and quite a mess. The Sex Olympics story was pretty entertaining and there’s a follow up to it near the end.
These stories are all about Sex and sex workers. There is a sport of love making that is judged like the olympic skaters. Crazy!! The stories are varied. I would say that the people who are in these stories are very open minded.
There was some interesting concepts especially the stories in the end, totally pushes the envelope in science fiction dystopia in terms of comedy and adult themes, this was My first Judge Dredd comic I feel like maybe it's not such a good entry point though.
My husband recommended this as an introduction to Judge Dredd and it was an excellent choice: a selection of fairly short stories, mainly not too serious, but still giving the flavour of the Judge and Mega-City One. I will definitely be reading more.
