UPDATE June 2014 So glad this is finally complete! It was fantastic! Interesting and exciting and suspenseful and emotional and filled with Harry getting to use his incredible magic.
I completely enjoyed the evolution of some of Harry's relationships here, especially his bond with Hogwarts and both his private and public relationships with Draco.
There were scenes in here that I enjoyed enough that I wanted to give five stars to them. The scenes with Harry and Draco together at Hogwarts where the school takes such good care of both of them were lovely and adorable and perfectly satisfied the fluff-lover in me.
And I completely understand Draco's reactions to Harry using his magic. Those scenes were fantastically fun to read!
All of the politics and the having to deal with people wanting to be part of Harry's court were much less interesting, however. So overall, 4 stars.
New Favorite Quotes: Yes, really, a Dark Lord's work is never done.
None of the newspaper articles had so much as breathed a hint that he'd ever had a male lover before this, which was a good thing, as Draco would have had to hunt down that lover and obsessively compare himself with him if they had.
Draco glanced around uneasily. "Thank you?" he asked, because there was no way he could make it a statement. Was Harry's magic watching out for him even when Harry himself was dead to the world?
"Remind me to never let you write the official biography of my reign."
"I'm glad Harry chose to be a Dark Lord instead of hanging around the Ministry and trying to clean up the corruption in it. He never could have succeeded without destroying everyone's free will, and that would have broken his heart."
Training at Lucius Malfoy's knee was excellent preparation for a life in politics.
The ripple of joy that had run through Hogwarts ... told him well enough who had come through the fire.
and a bored Slytherin was a dangerous one.
the sheer abundance of delight.
"your approval isn't the only standard I have now."
"So," Harry said, appearing behind the Aurors, "it would help if you told me why you were here, so that we can get past the initial unpleasantness and get to the detailed unpleasantness."
Not everyone had someone they could trust as much as he trusted Draco.
Harry summoned all his patience and made it walk with him and cling to his face so that no one would see him and know what was wrong.
"I am the Dark Lord, ladies and gentlemen," he said, and lowered his voice. "Do not fuck with me."
ORIGINAL REVIEW November 9 2013 I just now realized as I was adding this to GR that this is listed as unfinished on AO3, which tempts me to raise its rating slightly.
Harry and Draco's relationship progressing is one of my favorite things about this installment in the Benevolently Snarky Dark Lord-verse. Well, that and the adorable orange winged-kitten protector that Harry creates for Anne.
Parts of this still remind me just too much of the Saving Connor series for me to enjoy it as much as I was hoping I would.
Favorite Quote: "Everything I know about politics, I learned from people trying to kill me."
Black Phoenix is the second in this series and didn't disappoint; I flew through it at a rate of knots no less and very much enjoyed every moment. The politics of the Harry Potter as Dark Lord were well explored as were the accounting of those who wanted to join his court. The love angle didn't interrupt the focus of the story overly and instead added an additional line of support for Harry in light of a significant character shift from Hermione.
This would be my strongest criticism of this fic; that Hermione so drastically shifts out of character. Admittedly, she is the rational and sensible one, but she is also the only one of Harry's friends to stand consistently by his side. To therefore shift the character into one that would walk away - leaving Ron the loyal stooge - didn't quite sit right with me.
The Black Phoenix itself is however brilliant, with early depictions being entertaining and interesting whilst the later portrayals are cleverly brought about. The illustrations as to how the creature was brought about and the magical ramifications are well done indeed. I also enjoyed the inclusion of the various magical species and the resulting dialogue with a distinctly sarky and somewhat irritable Dark Lord. It made for engaging reading and built upon the existing universe well.
All in all, a well written fanfic that explores alternative options within the Harry Potter universe. If you have a hatred of gay love scenes then this isn't for you as some of the scenes are rather graphic to say the least, however the plot behind the story is worth it even if you are simply going to skip over the more pornographic sections of the fic. All in all, well worth reading and I look forward to reading the third in the series.
From the original book's perspective, it's weird just to imagine that Harry is a dark lord. But hey, it's a new experience of reading about the Wizarding world.
